John Rhys-Davies (Indiana Jones, The Lord of the Rings) joins us this week for one of my favorite interviews yet. The guy is prolific! He gets into everything from his pessimism heading into Lord of the Rings, the intimidation of working alongside Sean Connery, the immense difficulty of filming Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, and so much more. John was an open book this week, going on to talk about the pain of losing a child, his outlook on life after death, and the current vacuum of creativity our industry is stuck in. Hope you enjoy.

I've had food poisoning twice in my life - those moments are seared into my memory as one of the most horrific experiences. It's similar to heroin withdrawal but with slightly more diarrhea. You drop weight like anything.. light headed, flu, pain, stomach cramps, no warning, sudden explosive emissions. The first time I was around 16 and visited San Francisco for the first time. I went into an okay-looking cafe and ordered a burger. It took a suspiciously long time to arrive. 2 hours later, I ruined an entire hotel hoom and the manager had to send in a cleaner in a biohazard suit to water-spray clean the carpets (no joke!) I was with my brother who is 5 years younger than me. We both had it.. I was hallucinating and passing in and out of consciousness and was watching an episode of the X Files with the invisible elephant.. which bled into my dreams and semi-conscious state. It was a nightmare. Another time, I got it with my girlfriend at the time. We were so sick we couldn't make it upstairs so we camped out on the ground floor with cushions and covers. Also - I'm an idiot - it took me a few times to realise that the pork balls at a chinese restaurant in town made me double over in pain a few hours later. But they were tasty, I really didn't want to believe it was the pork. I'm probably full of tape worms and parasites. That restaurant closed down every 6 months and re-opened under a new name, same management. Either it was a money laundering front, or a way to avoid murder charges from bad pork. All true stories..

Food poisoning is HORRIBLE! I thought I'd had it multiple times...until I actually got it...BAD! I got it from a pizza place I used to work at. An old free slice of BBQ chicken pizza. The onset was very sudden. I was still working, and it wasn't until my boss heard me being violently ill in the bathroom that he had mercy...and said I had to deliver one more pizza on my way home...I almost shit myself at their doorstep...After that, I can remember being in and out of consciousness on the toilet. I was completely unprepared for an illness like this. I was so dehydrated. I'd take a sip of water, and within 30 seconds, it came right back out my ass. Constant vomiting and diarrhea. I couldn't absorb any water or nutrients. After my multi-hour toilet adventure, that seemed to last a lifetime, I only had the strength to crawl, like a slow dying worm, to my bedroom. I'd wrapped a towel around myself, as I couldn't stop the onslaught of diarrhea. It was one of the first times in my life that I actually thought I might die, and I was too sick to even think to call for help, let alone actually dialing a number. I didn't even have the strength to pull myself into my own bed, even if I'd had a mind to think it'd be a good idea. (it definitely wasn't...) The next day, after a night of hell, I had to text my sister to beg her to bring me Gatorade and medicine. She found me on the floor, hardly able to speak...In all, it took about 3 days to fully get out of the woods. I've NEVER been more sick, and I've been sick a lot. I've had chronic gastric issues and illnesses my entire life, even before and after this. It sort of gave me a new lease on life...not that that changed much for me lol, but, it made me appreciate the more boring, normal, mundane bits of life even more. They might not be so exciting, but...at least I'm not dying on a toilet or wrapped in a towel on the floor of my bedroom genuinely wondering if I'll survive...

Was trucking from Golden Colorado to San Bernardino. Stopped for dinner at Dennys in Kingman Arizona. Woke up to drive about 4am, feeling horrible. I started that desert drive and got horribly sick along the way. I remember having to pull over the side of the road and vomiting out the passenger window--coming out both ends. I made it to Barstow and collapsed. Called the company and let them know I was sick and couldn't deliver. I spent an hour laying on the floor of the truckstop shower. Slept most of the day. Woke up 2am having to use the bathroom. Climbed out of the truck and as soon as my keds hit the pavement I lost it. Just climbed back into the truck and cleaned up. I got up the next morning and drove to my delivery, picked up my next load. Collapsed at the Whitewater rest area on 10 East. I literally laid in my bunk unable to catch my breath for about an hour. Some of the sickest I've ever been.

I once got food poisoning after a meal at Del Taco about 20 years ago. It was the worst pain I ever went through. I kept feeling the need to throw up but nothing came out but each time I thought I had to throw up, it was like being stabbed with a knife in the stomach. I'm not a religious man, but I actually remember praying to God to kill me to end the pain. So, I feel John's pain and would never wish food poisoning on my worst enemy. The only good that I got out of it was that it kicked my habit of fast food. Haven't had fast food in 20 years. Been on Keto for the last 3 years and have never felt better.

boudusaved4719 ... I haven't eaten fast food since reading Eric Schlosser's book, Fast Food Nation in around 2001. The very idea that there are in excess of 28 different animals in a single McDonald's burger bun, is enough to make me recognise the type of pathogen transference, and the greater immunity I have toward antibiotics that have been drip-fed into a fast food diet, frightens me ...

@@oscarwilde5473 ...28?!?! Yikes. Yeah, I do not miss fast food at all. Having said that, I did find a place called Burger Lounge which serves grass-FED burgers and I've had some and they are really good. They serve it paleo style, meaning no bun but with lettuce, avocado and cooked zucchini. It tastes great. Now if I could just find a restaurant that served grass-FINISHED burgers, that would be ideal. Grass-finished means the cow only ate grass whereas grass-fed means they ate grass but also other things, like grain (unfortunately).

@@boudusaved4719 ... here's a weird set of numbers when you look at grain feed. If you feed grain to meat, you feed ten people. If you cut out the meat and just feed grains to people, you feed a thousand people the grain. It's a process of looking at how much energy goes into creating just ten kilos of industrial scale ground beef. Like the energy that one human being would have to burn to create all of the energy in just one gallon of gasoline, equates to twelve and a half weeks of human labor. Right now, the United States uses around twenty-two million barrels of oil per day. The entire world combined uses ninety. The world has a population of eight billion, and the United States has three hundred and thirty-four million. That means the United States is using a quarter of the worlds resources to support less than five percent of global population. With these three things combined, we both may as well go screaming into the woods for all the good we would do ...

@@oscarwilde5473 Listen, I tried the vegetarian diet, vegan diet, fish diet, paleo diet...when it comes to protein, I believe the science, which is the best source comes from pasture-raised eggs, wild caught sardines or salmon, grass-finished beef, pasture-raised chicken/turkey and certain nuts and seeds. I don't go crazy on any one of those sources. I like to mix it up. I understand the impact on the environment. I wish there was a realistic solution, but I just can't do vegan. Vegetables and fruits alone is not sufficient. Plus, on vegan, you can east bread, rice, pasta and other starchy carbs, all of which raise insulin in the blood.

Thirty years ago I woke up at roughly 2am one morning during the summer in a deep sweat, doubled over with stomach pain. I barely pulled my pants down before I experienced the worst case of diarrhea in my life. And thus began 12 hours of hell in which I was curled up in the Fetal Position on the floor of my bathroom, alternating between throwing up and extremely messy bowel movements. My wife and I ate at Red Lobster the night before. Amongst other things, I had escargot, but she didn’t, and I wonder if I was dealing with a bout of food poisoning afterwards. I concur when people say that they wanted to die, as there were many times during those 12 hours that I too was longing for Death’s warm embrace. That experience permanently altered my enjoyment of seafood. I used to be able to eat fried shrimp by the pound, but after that experience, I couldn’t even look at it for nearly two years, and anything else out of the ocean actually made me feel queasy for many years afterward. Since then, I’ve never darkened the door of a Red Lobster, and it will stay that way for the rest of my life, no matter if I’m starving and Red Lobster was the lone remaining eating establishment in existence. I’ve only recently started eating salmon and sardines for the Omega Fatty Acids as I’m trying to cut down on the inflammation throughout my body, but I can take or leave lobster tail, shrimp, clams, etc. It left such an impression that I’m actually feeling sick at the memory.

Back in 2009, me and my sister both caught a nasty stomach virus or bug several weeks after our vacation at Disney Land. We were living in Lee Massachusetts at the time and it was the middle of January, so we had to get up early in the morning to catch the plane from there and back. At some point after our vacation, we've ordered Chinese food at the local Chinese food place and you know with Chinese food there's always going to be left overs. My sister was the first one to catch the bug, apparently after eating leftover lo mein, luckily for me I didn't catch any of the symptoms as of yet. Later on in the week, I had some of the left over chinese and nibbled on a burrito from Hot Harrys. Then suddenly out of the blue I caught the bug and MAN it was repulsive. And like John here, I was bed ridden. I couldn't have a proper BM without throwing up so I was forced to relive myself in the bed. Yeah my skin still crawls thinking of the experience. By the next day I felt a little better, however the experience gave me some form of PTSD, I was hesitant to have a BM in the upstairs bathroom so I always used the downstairs one. There was also a point in time where I suddenly feel nauseous and my legs would start vibrating uncontrollably. As the years went by that began to stop and life returned to normal. We also continued to get take out from that particular Chinese restaurant during the early 2010s with no problems. You could say that whatever happened in 2009 was a freak incident. However even to this day, I am weary of going on planes, eating Chinese food mixed with Mexican food, and eating left over Chinese food.

I imagine Lord of the Rings was pretty bad given that he was allergic to the adhesive they used to apply the latex prosthetics to his face plus having to film a good portion of the movie on his knees.
