Why Joel Embiid is Impossible to Guard

Спорт

In December, Joel Embiid averaged 40 points per game while shooting almost 61% from the field, proving that he's impossible to guard.

The Nick Nurse effect adding a great coach can unlock a players peak play. Embid already was unguardable what Nurse did is make him realize that only “Embid can stop Embid” bailing defenders out by playing outside-in jacking jumpers makes it easy to guard, playing inside-out makes him UNSTOPPABLE! His foot work in the paint is unmatched once he gets hot that middy game gets going now the defender is playing honest once they can’t take away anything it’s a long night for the opposing team!

Nurse is the first coach sixers have had that run an up to date offense that really takes advantage of an elite center. Brett Browns offense was up to date and did take advantage of him a little with the dribble hand offs which may have been enough to win one if Kawhi didn’t hit a crazy shot and then they imploded. Doc ran a damn 90s offense.

For those of you who have never guarded a guy that size, it is almost literally impossible to stop him. I'm 6'3, strongest guy on my basketball team, and I had to guard Dominic Woodson 6'10 about 280 at the time. Its just the sheer size...I felt so helpless...Imagine being 1 on 1 in a small room with Francis Nganno or John Jones. It sucks when they are running down court and they use their momentum and they throw their whole body at you to get deep post position. What makes it worse is that Embiid is very athletic, highly skilled, and can shoot free throw; it doesn't surprise me that him and Jokic score so many points.

Some fun Joel Embiid playoff facts: The best team he's beaten in the playoffs is the 2022 5th seed Raptors led by Siakam and FVV He averages 22 PPG on 49.2% TS in elimination games(a 9 game sample size) In NO playoff run has he ever averaged more assists than turnovers He is the ONLY MVP in league history to never make the conference finals This year, he had the biggest PPG drop from the RS to the playoffs of any MVP winning season He turned the ball over 8 times in back to back elimination games against the Hawks in 2021 He's shot under 20% from three over his last two playoff runs He had a worse eFG% than Russell Westbrook during the 2023 playoffs With a chance to go up 3-1, Joel Embiid went 0-12 in the second half against the 5 seeded Hawks in game 4, including missing a wide open layup to take the lead He got stripped by Danilo Gallnari to seal the loss in game 7 Down 3 in game 5 of the same series with 15 seconds left, he missed BOTH free throws to seal the game All of his offensive numbers(PPG, RPG, APG, TOs, FG%, 3P%, FT%) are worse in the playoffs than in the regular season aside from FT% He has only won ONE playoff series in his career where he played in all four wins(2022 vs. Toronto) He is 0-3 in game 7s and has posted a 49% TS and 5.3 TOs a game in those 3 games He once got swept in a series despite averaging FIFTEEN free throws per game(2020 vs. Boston) Over the last two seasons, he has a 9.2 BPM in the regular season(box plus minus) and a 1.0 BPM in the playoffs WORST OF ALL: HE IS 9/38 IN CLUTCH(within 5 points, last 5 minutes by NBA definition) SITUATIONS DURING HIS PLAYOFF CAREER, WITH AN UNFATHOMABLE TS% of 35.7%

    1. Health issue. And it's not a coincidence. When it comes to playoff times, teams put extra gear in their effort, especially in defense. It's not that hard to imagine he's getting banged up even more comes playoff time with how dominant he is, while also playing the most physical position in basketball. 2. Bad coaching. We finally see what a true coaching geniuses can do to a basketball team. 3. His lack of trust in his teammates. Over the past 3 years, I think Embiid just doesn't trust his teammates comes clutch moments in playoffs, making him think that he has to do it all, which leads to an easier scheme for the defender, and an increase in turnovers. The last teammates he truly believes in? Jimmy Butler, and I don't think it's a coincidence that it was also the most successful playoff run the Sixers had (taking the eventual champion, Toronto to a game 7 and a quadruple bounce). I believe Embiid have full faith on Maxey this season, so I expect a more successful playoffs

This is a question I've been struggling with myself. Still think Embiid's the more devastating scorer, especially because he does more away from the ball, but Shai is the better passer and decision maker, more of a "traditional lead creator", and I think he'll be able to maintain his level of scoring effectiveness in the playoffs. It's tough to say right now, waiting for postseason basketball.
