Why Jean Kirstein Is Isayama's Favorite AOT Character

Фильм және анимация

#jeankirstein #aot #aotedit
If you had asked me who my favorite character of Attack On Titan was during the early Seasons, I would’ve told you without hesitation: Jean Kirstein. I didn’t really know why at the time though. He was not your typical badass character à la Levi Ackerman and not the protagonist either. He actually came off as an arrogant and selfish brat (find funny scene). But despite all of that, he ended up being one of the most popular characters from the series and many have voiced him as their favorite, including the author himself, Hajime Isayama. This begs the question: Why is Jean-boy loved by so many? We’re going to answer this question by exploring 3 main themes that I believe epitomizes Jean Kirstein’s character and how we can learn from him as a person.

I never saw Jean as "an arrogant and selfish brat". He was pretty reasonable, had valid points, could read the room, had a good grasp on people's feelings and actions & great communication skills. In the manga we get to see that he only wants to join the military police brigade because he thought that humanity wouldn't be able to defeat the titans, it was a matter of time until doom, so he could at least live a couple of comfortable years before that happened. However, everything changed when he found out humanity had a new chance with Eren as a titan shifter. Right off the bat, we can see that his fuel with the protagonist has much to do with the way Eren hypes people to follow his ideas and ends up not thinking about the consequences to those who go along with him. While Jean is always reflecting about the smaller and bigger pictures, life is something he values, so he feels deeply when a life is lost (especially when it's of one of his comrads or civilians) and tries his best not to cause more harm than necessary. Plus, he joined the Survey Corps as a way to make Marco's and other soldiers/cadets deaths not be in vain. Jean deserves more appreciation.

I love how Isayama went from Jean to Reiner and now back to Jean again. His latest interview he said his favorite is Jean again and it shows with how well he was written from beginning to end. Reiner also had good character writing but it felt like Isayama enjoyed torturing Reiner's character while for Jean's character doesn't get tortured like Reiner he goes through growth from the scenario that is around him. He overcomes challenges, which is why he is a great leader. I think that's why I loved Jean's character when AoT first came out at 2013. He is a cocky character type but once he was put into a situation where he was cornered his leadership abilities shined. In s1 when he lead everyone to get gas he felt so much regret of how many died on his command. That was the point I loved that character.

It's so good seeing some love to Jean. He has always been a goat in my eyes. He is not just the usual cocky asshole rival that you kinda like, he is his own character while he has tons of human relations with all kind of characters. He has a rivarly with Eren because they have diferent looks on life, a bromance with Marco, he is a close friend to armin, connie and sasha, a love triangle with mikasa, is a mentor to Marlowe, learns to forgive Reiner... But what I love the most about him is how human he is. No ackerman, no titan powers, no great dreams... He is just a dude who wants to live at peace, but refuses to do it until everyone else is allowed to. He is a kid who covers his ears when he is scared and a hero who saved the world with no hesitation when he was already safe and could have had his dream life. I am so happy he got a good ending

I wasn't expecting these type of comments from Jean's character. He is the only one who uses logic before emotions. And we can see that when he chooses the alliance, he knows that if he stays, he would get the life that he has always wanted, however, he also knew that letting Eren kill million of innocents was not worth his dream. Jean always showed his feelings but never use them to take decisions like other characters (Eren deciding to do the rumbling).

Before Jean became friends with Eren, he started to have feelings for Mikasa. So, no. Jean did not betray anyone. Life has to go on. Moreover, Jean is the most realistic character in Aot. Even Isayama himself described him as the 'representative of humanity'. His character development was breathtaking. And if you're going to interpret him as a bad character just because he has feelings for Mikasa, I'd say you're pretty superficial. If you're saying Jean wasn't a "gentleman", that was true when he was young. He was just a teenager. But he was a real gentleman in the last season. Although he wanted to "cover his ears and stay inside," he chose to take responsibility and do what he thought was right for humanity. Moreover, even though he was in love with Mikasa, he never crossed the line or forced her into anything in any way. A true "gentleman." ISAYAMA TO JEAN: In my own view, I created Jean and Armin as representatives of humanity. They are not bad people, but they are also not purely righteous people, either. I wanted them to be characters whom readers can sympathize with and relate them to actual human beings. However, as the story progresses, Armin has grown to be an excellent individual, while Jean is left to be the only true representative of humans.

This is absolutely wrong, my friend. Jean didn't wait for Eren to die to tell Mikasa how he felt. They are literally in the middle of war! There was never time for this. Moreover, even 3 years after Eren died, Mikasa and Jean are not together. So, if he waited for Eren's death to tell Mikasa his feelings, why didn't he tell Mikasa about his feelings even years after his death? We don't know what happened between Jean and Mikasa. This is wrong my friend, too wrong. Jean did not wait for Eren's death. Even years later, he kept his feelings to himself. Moreover, Jean tried to defend Eren throughout the last season. While no one else tried to understand Eren, Jean made a great effort to do so. He even acted protectively towards Eren. Remember his conversation with Magath. He did everything to protect Eren. He only cried for Eren throughout the entire MANGA, man. How can you say this? No matter what you do, just don't do that man. Also, as I mentioned before, Jean started having feelings for Mikasa when he had no emotional closeness with Eren. This cannot be betrayal or disloyalty. If you read my other comments, I think there is a very cheap reason for Jean to fall in love with Mikasa. And I think this is ridiculous. But this is really a different level, man. Please just don't say that. It's sickening that you can even think about it. This is really disgusting, man. Saying that Jean was "waiting for Eren to die" is truly despicable.

Ima be honest this character is really not that great the way I see it he was a annoyance in the show all he did was like you said came off cocky and always start stuff with eren cauee he had a crush on mikasa and because mikasa is more into eren he gets all uptight when it comes to eren I'm not a eren fan by the way ina mikasa fan just in case someone says your a eren fan no it's just plain and simple I like how Jean fans try to justify Jean's character because it's isayama favorite character wich isayama after thoes extra pages of the ending came it shows isayama really had bad writing but anyway then jean in the ova dreams about mikasa under the cover like a wirdo like I understand you have crushes in your life but my God I never draw my crush under the cover looking like you was masterbaxxxxxxing and noticed I mentioned mikasa alot cauee that was his whole point to the show was to be the parasite to pretty much eren and mikasa obvious love but skip pass then season 4 he dreams about mikasa with a baby knowing that mikasa loves eren wich makes it worse then at the end he waits until eren leaves then goes with mikasa at the end near the tree and people like jean ? It just shows people like the most unloyal disrespectful stuff jean had no remorse for eren or mikasa now nothing was confirmed but if it is jean with her most wanna say he had good character development well that character development went down the drain with thoes extra pages honest I don't see how people like this character and the jean fans o boy they go so far for this character that literally was never that good because isyama favorite that makes him good ? Like what ? Because he's a character to relate to ? Absolutely not I could never be him a guy that waits until your comrade leaves just to go with his woman that's like saying ima wait until my friend leaves just to get with his girlfriend like what 🤦🏽‍♂️

First of all, no, Jean didn't pick a fight with Eren over Mikasa. He himself admitted this in the last season. If you're upset that Jean is in love with Mikasa, I don't understand that either. The fact that they end up together makes things even weirder, but Jean is my favorite character and I think the background of this is a little different. I think this is extremely illogical, it is unnecessary for Jean to fall in love with Mikasa. It's like an attempt was made to give a concrete reason for Eren and Jean's fight. It looks cheap because Eren and Jean have enough reasons to not get along. They are people who helped each other grow, and each side was able to convey their ideas to the other. They don't hate each other. On the contrary, they are precious to each other. Eren didn't want Jean to shorten his life by inheriting a titan, just like he doesn't want any of his friends, he wanted him to have a long life. You cannot ignore the fact that Jean made every effort to defend Eren and give him justice in the last season. I won't even mention that Jean only cries for Eren throughout the entire MANGA. Neither side hates each other, they just don't ALWAYS agree with the other side. People with different worldviews. And all this is enough for them to not get along. Jean even admitted this herself in Season 4, Eren was annoying him because he was 'so cool'. (Here, Eren's hero mentality is probably what Jean considered 'cool' when he was younger.) They were bickering for personal reasons and not because of Mikasa, which makes more sense. They are fighting not because of a girl, but for their own personal opinions, from Jean's side, or their own sense of morality, from Eren's side. Two teenage boys with different perspectives and hormones at their peak. It would be unreasonable not to have a fight. This is where they seem to have brought Mikasa in to make this more concrete. Like I said, it looks cheap. Another reason for you to dislike Jean is that he waited for "Eren's death" to confess to Mikasa that he liked her. This is absolutely not true. They were literally in the middle of war! In such a situation, whether Eren was alive or not, Jean would not be able to open up to Mikasa. In all honesty, I really don't like the JeanKasa ship. It's obvious that Mikasa likes Eren, and Jean deserves someone who loves him. But if we ignore that, we don't even know exactly what happened between Jean and Mikasa. It is clearly foolish to throw away Jean's character writing and development for an event we don't even know the actual story of. Moreover, even 3 years after Eren died, Jean and Mikasa are not together. So if he had waited for Eren's death, why didn't he come out to Mikasa even a few years after Eren's death? One would have to be stupid to think that Jean wasn't saddened by Eren's death. Jean literally only cried once throughout the manga. For who? For Marco? For Sasha or his other comrades? No, for Eren. If what you don't like is Jean's character, this is the point where I disagree with you the most. Unsurprisingly, Jean's character in the first season offends many people. But I think that's what makes it literally realistic. Jean is called "Representative of Humanity" by Isayama. Just thinking about it, I see that he's just like us. He didn't have a very tragic life. Of course, he lost his comrades, but he grew up in a good family environment. Just like us. At least my mother wasn't eaten by titans. If yours ate, I don't know that much. He was smart, but not as smart as Armin, Erwin, Hange, or Zeke. He was strong, but not as strong as Mikasa or Levi. He was funny, but not as funny as Sasha and Connie. He was brave enough to join the Survey Corps, but not as much as Eren. He did bad things, but his intentions were never bad. He had some selfish motives, but at the end of the day, he chose what he thought was good for humanity. I'm going to be as honest as I can be right now. I don't think Jean's character in the first season was "selfish". What is selfish about wanting a safe life? He just wanted not to die. Fuck it, just NOT dying. Is it really too much? What is more natural than a living thing wanting to "not die"? If I were Jean, I wouldn't want to die either. Everyone would want this. At the end of the manga, even Eren just wanted to "not die". Nobody wanted it to be like this. Eren didn't want his hometown to be invaded by Titans, Mikasa didn't want her family to die in front of her eyes. Connie didn't want to lose Sasha and her entire family. Annie and Bertholdt wanted to be reunited with their father. Reiner wanted to prove himself to his mother. Levi didn't want to lose all his loved ones. Hange didn't want to be overwhelmed by the responsibility of being a commander. If given the chance, they would all want to live in a peaceful place where they wouldn't have to fight. No one wants to die, but is Jean being selfish just because he says it out loud? Fuck that. Of course, the path Jean has chosen is very respectable. Jean didn't have to put up with any of this. He didn't even have to be a soldier. If he wanted, he could fuck everything and go to his mother's warm embrace. He has such a mother that she takes care of him until he dies without expecting anything in return. I mean he didn't have to fight, he chose to fight. He chose to leave everything behind and fight. They still have selfish motives. (We can understand this from his conversation with Floch, or from the way he wants to cover his ears and stay in the room.) But he can still go out to do what he thinks is right. Just like real people. We all accept it if we are honest; We are selfish and will continue to be so. But we must still learn to make sacrifices when the time comes. We are afraid and we will continue to be afraid. But we must learn to overcome fear. Even if what Jean did was selfish, then selfishness isn't such a bad thing. Because we are all selfish, less or more. As I said, I have great respect for the path Jean has chosen. I probably wouldn't join the Survey Corps. I don't think I'm that brave. Jean is also afraid, but he is brave enough to overcome his fear. But even if Jean hadn't chosen that path, I would still have loved him. Maybe that's why they call Jean "the most inspiring character in Attack On Titan." Jean teaches us how to live. I know you want to cover your ears and stay inside. I want this too. But we must learn to overcome fear. Jean is one of the few characters in that series that can inspire us. Many of the characters are realistic, but not all of them fit into our modern world. Jean is not like that. Jean can be an inspiration for us. He's totally human. A character in flesh and blood. Everyone in the series has changed but none as much as Jean. He is a "selfish" dreamer; He turned into a selfless, intelligent, high-observation, aware and realistic leader. He knows he has to fight, but he doesn't want to just die. Just like us. He's not the best but good. Being the best is not Jean's specialty anyway. That's what makes him realistic. None of us are the best. No matter how good we are at anything, somewhere in the world there is someone who can beat us without any difficulty. We just haven't met them yet. That's why Jean is realistic. Jean is not "the best". Jean is "good enough".
