Why Japan SLAUGHTERS Cats and Dogs More Than Any Other Country

Ойын-сауық

In my video where I presented my new dream of “making every Japan lover’s dream come true,” I introduced a list of some of the social problems in Japan that concern me. Taking a look at some of the comments on that video, it seemed like everyone was especially surprised about the fact that Japan kills cats and dogs at the highest rate than anywhere else in the world. It is very sad but this is true.
But why would such a horrible thing happen?
Today, I would like to explain the situation of slaughtering cats and dogs in Japan, as well as 3 reasons why this problem is happening. At the end of the video, I would like to introduce 5 ways that are proposed by some animal protection NGOs to stop and end this horrible situation.

I feel like conservative groups would cause a big fuss about that being accessible in schools and libraries and demand the work get a high age rating so it can't be put in schools. How about neutering stray animals? We had this problem in the past and Singapore government made it a necessity to neuter all stray animals to curb the breeding numbers. This way, we reduce the number as compared to euthanising animals due to overbreeding. Pet owners can also choose to neuter their pets - which most pet owners do today. Additionally, in order to purchase or adopt pets, the pet shops/animal shelters conduct home inspection and interview of the to-be owners before giving the approval of purchase or adoption. This ensures that the house is pet-friendly and the owners are responsible to own pets.

It's not, but it's their fault . These rescuers took in more than they can handle , therefore , many of the animals get neglected. This causes despondancy , despair , and eventually dog or cat will expire. Some animals escape , or are sold off to a buyer who will sell for adoption , or for meat ! We had this issue in Ireland in the 90's. It was stopped by doing a few things, requiring a dog license to own a dog, outlawing the selling of dogs and cats in pet stores, increasing dog neutering, and microchipping dogs with the owners details. There has also been a crackdown on "puppy farms". Also, if you want to buy a dog from a kennel, then its about €150.

When I was fourteen I adopted a stray Siamese cat that one night appeared at my door. I took good care of him, and he was a very loyal pet. At that time there were also four dogs and yet another cat, all of whom treated the necomer very kindly. He was very loyal and friendly to everyone, especially to me: I remember playing on my Sega Genesis and the cat jumping onto my lap and I would put the controller on the cat's back while keeping on playing. One day, when I went to watch a film, I was shocked to know that he had been bitten to death by some stray dogs. All of this happened in mid 2000. I still miss you and love you, Jax (yes, he was named after a Mortal Kombat character. Mortal Kombat is my favourite video game franchise).

Not Japanese but Australian, my family has taken in quite a few strays over the years that either showed up on our land or were found abandoned as kittens at the local garbage dump (sad, but has happened multiple times). Unfortunately people being irresponsible pet owners is not a problem unique to Japan. Abandoning pets in the wild is bad not just for the pets themselves, but is also devastating to native wildlife.

@@jimjimson6208 Exactly, I grew up in a Navy family in America and the abandoning of pets is pretty bad. Every time a pet owner was moving out of the Navy Housing area we were living in at the time, we would see about two or three stray cats or dogs roaming around aimlessly because they're trying to find their owners. Animal Control and ASPCA were in that neigbourhood every other day. Most of the neighbours knew some of the workers by name. It's honestly pathetic that any country has this problem because animal owners are either too lazy or impulsive.

One thing I'd like to add is that a good way to recover lost pets is to have them microchipped. It provides a way to display ownership & medical information if the collar was lost when they are found. The chip is only the size of a grain of rice and it doesn't bother the pets at all when properly implanted by a trained veterinarian. It also doesn't require any batteries to be read by a scanner.

I live in Mexico where--at least in my area--animals are not chipped. My vet--who makes home visits and has become a wonderful friend--told me that most vets could not afford the equipment to chip nor the equipment to read it. I rescued one cat 9 years ago from a cat shelter run by foreigners and over the years 5 more arrived at the gate (there must be a cat sign of some sort out there!!) or were found as kittens in trash cans. Now all 6 cats live on my property (I have a garden) and I pray no more come. All are neutered and properly vaccinated upon arrival. They insist on sleeping in bed (they take up at least half of the bed every night) and basically run the house. I just get to live here. : - ) I feel sorry for so many strays and my vet has more than 14 dogs and 11 cats on her property that she cares for. More people need to adopt. There is nothing like a pet for affection toward their owner.

I worked with animal control. It is a very complex problem without simple solutions. To me, one clear problem is how hard is to show evidence of animal abandonment and how light is the punishment. Other thing is how few people castrate their animals. Once, I proposed that only with authorization people could have non-castrated animals and breed, but people never heard me. I gave up because I had the opportunity and I was already having some mental issues.

That’s surprising to me. Most people I come across actually consider spay/neuter a necessity and even insult those who do not fix their pets despite the fact that it is healthier to keep their dog in tact for as long as possible. Of course you need to be a very responsible pet owner to have an in tact dog, and if they cannot guarantee protection against mating then they should fix their pet ASAP.

So if you have a pet that you don't want to neuter because you are ok with them having young why is that a problem? I have never considered taking any animal and neutering them. I don't take in animals that I can't care for and secure though so there's that. For example I don't believe in having a big breed unless you can assure there is space for him/her to be able to move around freely. Whether that is on a large property or a fenced and gated property they must have the necessary room to move around. I can understand the need to neuter strays but I will not actually want a neutered animal as a pet. I've witnessed neutered animals experiencing personality changes and it makes me very uncomfortable. I just don't want to take that right away because it's inconvenient for me. When I take on an animal I accept all responsibilities that come with it and if they accidentally mate outside my compound I take on all responsibilities for the young and find them good homes. Of course not everyone is in this position so I understand others neutering. I just don't think those that choose not to neuter and are willing to accept all responsibilities/consequences for that decision should be vilified.

  • @petiteange08

@@livelovelife32 Good for you if you can find good home for all the young, but I think most people are not in that position, which is why they should castrate their animals. And are you sure the people you gave the young to are able to or even care to find good homes for the young animals that will be produced from the animals you gave out? I neutered my cat after her first litter not because it would be inconvenient for me to find home for her kitten, but because I am responsible and I don't want her babies to end up on the street. One of the owners conveniently "lost" the kitten, but I think they just realised it was a responsibility they were not ready for. Btw, my cat has the same personality before and after.

I want to add two points to Shogo list for solve the problem 1) Involve adults and comunitie on this social and ambiental problem making Adoption Festivals. Make adoption festivals is a good way to educate people and promote adoptions. This could be promoted by goverment on public spaces, and in aliance with private fundations and volunteers. Here in Colombia we do it them on public spaces on Sundays. Many people participate as volunteer for one day to educate people about having a pet and the social and ambiental problem to aband pets. Also many volunteers take care of one animal this day to show him/her in the adoption festival. 2) Involve schools in social work to educate the young ones in many of this fundations and in the goverment protection centers. That helps to educate the kids on what kind of responsability is to have a pet (give food, give a bath, excersice, heatl care) and to spread the social and ambiental education of how affect a animal when people abandon them. muchas gracias!!! pd: sorry for my grammar mistakes ;p

How animals are treated is good indicator of how civilized culture or country is. Production animals (pigs, cows, etc.) are however often forgotten, even if pets are valued. One another thing is that many people consider only the price of the pet, but forgot that they may need treatments that cost many times more. One should take into consideration the overall costs before buying a pet.

  • @KunstStueck

Absolutely. But another very important thing people tend to forget or completely underestimate is, that a pet takes much of your time and attention. Being able to pay for everything a pet can cost you cannot make up for a lack of quality time, training and so on. Something that needs to be provided for 8 - 20 years, depending on species and breed. (Or 80 years for turtles & co. )

I respect your view but let me say it is not a universal human value that all life is the same. Among animals it is common to see a pet, a working animal and a food animal are different. Some animals are activity harmful to human life and spread disease. Let us stay on pets. I say this to say that if we are talking about pets as a class then I largely agree that we can do better. They are a part of our families but the adoption should be done with care and sober understanding of the commitment and pleasure of it. (The rest is another story and the values we all have will dramatically be different.)

Near where I live there's a cat cafe where all cats can be adopted. It opened just a few months ago but almost a 100 cats have been adopted already, they are great. I used to volunteer in a cat shelter, it's so important to take animals out of the streets! There are so many diseases and dangers to them, it's terrible how many people think they can live just fine out there alone. Stray animals are not living a "pets dream" and having fun and being free, they're barely surviving and probably being abused daily by other strays or random people. Amazing video, I've never heard of this problem in Japan before, thank you for always bringing us such valuable information!

RE: Taxing owners. Link this to a clause which allows an exemption for spayed/neutered pets. This will have two effects: 1. It will encourage current owners to sidestep a new tax (taxes are never popular, are they?) while retaining their pets and 2. It will limit breeders, who will be obliged to pay additional taxes to continue to engage in their occupation. Also it might be better to adopt the term "neutering" over castration, as guys tend to respond very badly to this term. Great video! Thank you!

When I lived in Japan as a kid, there was a Japanese neighbor who had a hunting dog that he kept in a small cage in his front yard. He was intentionally starving it to death. I suppose the dog had "offended" him in some way. In any case, all the American kids in the neighborhood tried to sneak food to the poor dog. When we'd get caught, the dog's owner would run out yelling and screaming at us. The poor dog was just skin and bones and suffering terribly. Many of our parents got together and offered the man a huge amount of money for the dog but he refused to sell it. The abuse of the dog was so horrible that the police were called but the police got mad at us and told us the dog belonged to the man and he could do anything he wanted to it and ordered us to stay away. We kept trying to sneak the dog food but couldn't get enough food to the dog to help it and we'd been threatened by the police in any case. One day we went to try to sneak the dog some food and the poor dog was laying dead in its cage and looked like a skeleton. It was horrible. That was over 50 years ago but I still remember it very clearly and how horrible it was. I hope that man is burning in hell right now for what he did. Another story: a Japanese friend's cat had kittens which she tried to give away but nobody wanted one. Result: they were all drowned in a bucket of water. She didn't do it- she took them somewhere where a man did it for her. Still.......

I live in the US where this is often brought up as an issue as well. I've always believed you should have to acquire a license to own pets because it's a living being. If you have to take a pet to a government agency because you can't care for it then you should have to pay support for the pet as you would to a spouse taking care of your kid in the event of separation.

I just wanted to add to what I think the solution would be. Being licensed to own pets would be the start but then every pet that you own should be legally required to have a microchip that identifies them as yours. Fines and penalties should then be developed to combat how people may illegally dispose of pets

I'm from Argentina, and have 11 stray cats, and you don't have any problem with facilities capturing stray animals, however we have an increasing amount of ONG's because there are a lot of animals in the streets, but I think that as we do not care much about noises, that allow us to have lot of pets. All animals should be compulsory microchipped before being eligible for sale, and to buy the animal you have to register the animal's microchip to yourself. It would make it much easier to track down owners who abandon their animals, and even to reunite lost pets more easily. TNR programs to drop the stray puppy and kitten births, and compulsory spay/neuter if you're not a registered breeder (like say for guide dogs). All potential owners must pass a basic test in animal care and maintenance before they can obtain an animal (this should include fish and rodents). Awareness for what happens to abandoned animals, such as having TV shows about the issue and the option to adopt not shop.

This is one of the few times I disagree with Shogo. The most effective way to deal with the high number of unwanted/stray animals is to boost sterilization programs. When every animal entering a store or adoption center is sterilized, it diminishes the breeding population overall. In my part of the world, petstores are not allowed to sell animals, they can only work with rescue organizations to display adoptable pets. Trap-neuter-return programs are highly effective for control of feral populations. There are also support groups for pet owners: Pet food banks and low cost vet services to help people going through hard times to keep their animals. Where I live, due to these programs we have no stray dogs and there are enough rescue organizations to keep animal facilities virtually empty of unwanted pets.

In the US stray dogs are brought to Animal Control if their owners can’t be found and are not able to be adopted because of behavioral problems then they are euthanized humanely. I believe animal shelters try as much as possible to help facilitate adoptions making sure animals will be safe and owners are responsible. Thank you Shogo for sharing this important topic.

I really appreciate how you talk about difficult topics both objectively and with empathy. I think Japan should introduce as special tax for the pet industry. Instead of taxing owners directly, even if people who take care of shelter animals could get tax excemption, companies should pay a tax that is bound to be distributed to both gouverment and private animal shelter facilities.

I'm glad you mentioned that there are some cities with feeding areas where the volunteers can capture and spay/neuter the animals. In the part of America where I live, there are many stray cats, and my neighbor is one of the people who feeds them and is able to trap them so she can get them to the vet to be fixed, then they can be released back out to the wild. It's called the "trap and fix" method and is really helpful for controlling the population, while also being able to feed and enjoy the presence of the cats.

I think a law should be enacted where the only way to own a pet dog/cat is to adopt from animal shelters. Reason is because when a potential pet owner wants to have a pet, it is highly probably that the first choice is not to adopt from animal shelter but to spend thousands on puppy/kitten from a pet shop or pet breeder. Only when the number of animals in the shelter fall to an acceptable number then shops are allowed to sell. The number allowed to sell per shop should be highly controlled. Pet owners who adopt/buy pets should be properly educated in the consequences of owning a pet before allowing them to have one. They also need to sign a contract that promise to take care of such pets and not ignore/abandon them or worse, intentionally killing them so they can escape ownership. As mentioned by commentor Eleanor below, animal welfare groups can capture the stray dogs and cats, neuter them and then release them back to their territory instead of keeping in animal shelter. To differentiate between neutered and non-neutered animals can be a clipped ear or some other easy-identifiable feature

That only causes problems, as mentioned in the video. Also while dogs are relatively unproblematic cats cause a lot of damage, which is why they absolutely must be captured. If you keep a cat alive you're enabling the killing of many other animals, the extinction of species and the disruption of ecosystems.
