Why Japan's Birth Rate is Falling (and How We Can Fix It)

Ойын-сауық

Japan's Declining Population is perhaps the biggest issue facing the country. Ever since WWII the fertility rate of Japan has been on a decline and is now the lowest of any major country in the world. This is thanks to Japan's large urban population and modern economy, along with social and economic challenges involved with having kids.
The result of this low fertility rate over a number of decades is a massive population imbalance, one that growing in severity. As the population ages the work force shrinks, resulting in a larger group of dependents being taken care of by a smaller group of working age people, an untenable situation.
In spite of the issues at hand, a solution exists in the form of immigration. Though the Japanese wish to protect their culture, there is growing support in bringing in immigrants to fill gaps in the labor market and bolster their population. In addition, various incentives are being put in place to encourage births and the raising of children. The results of these programs range from mixed to promising, but show that natalist policies can be viable for Japan.

    burden of supporting the elderly (that didn't have children to support themselves) placed on young people(actual tax payers) cause them to have a harder life , people tend to not have children when they're suffering. More old people = less children , unless the young stop supporting them and make them face the consequences of not having children.

  • @john_doe_not_found
    @john_doe_not_found2 жыл бұрын

    Let young people become stable sooner, and they will have families. Housing, school debt and employment opportunities are the triangle that decides family size in an urban environment. The sooner a family is started, the more likely they are to have kids. Start at 25, probably kids. Start at 35, probably no kids.

    @@cs0345 Sure, some people make the choice not to have kids. There is a sweet spot between 25 and 35 where you should get it done. A woman who has never given birth, getting pregnant for the first time at 35 has an increased chance of complications. But between 35 - 40, it is still workable for a woman to have a child (high risk but possible). After 40, you need to be rich, like Janet Jackson levels of wealth to pull off a successful pregnancy. And there will be high odds of miscarriage even if the IVF is successful. If the woman is obese, even with IVF, no chance of kids after 40. Really rough after 35 (expect complications).

    Japan and the Wests falling demographics is only an issue because they chose to live beyond their means. They are now stuck in a GDP to debt death circle. Japan has to do everything it can to keep its GDP up or its ability to deficit spend becomes impossible, then debt servicing becomes impossible then you default and have to cut services. In the end, Japan will have to cut all its social welfare services. All of them. This will happen in the west too. It took most modern nation states 100 years to get to this point, it will take another 100 to unwind it. I am not sure who thought it was a good idea to tell families they didnt have to take care of their own and not to worry because the government would. But I know in the future they will look at us as fools.

    But you see that doesn't increase the number if Japanese people, that merely just adds Indians to Japan. Countries are places with individual histories, cultures, and phenotypes, not just one large economic zone. This is no different than Europe bringing in millions of Middle-Easterners and Africans.. Europes birthrate is still at endagering levels they have just added non-Europeans to take up the spaces the natives should be taking.

    In an ideal world that's all it would take, it's just there are a myriad of socioeconomic factors that make having and raising a kid increasingly more difficult/untenable in the modern developed world. People absolutely want to have kids, I think the average desired family size in most countries is around 2 children (which is about replacement level), it's just people realistically can't.

    Well, Japanese people work more than ten hours per day, which is extremely stressful, so they have no time nor patience to become parents. Also the country is well know for its strict immigration laws, so is extremely difficult for a foreigner to reside there. And the fact that the country forbid dual citizenship is enough to make every possible non Japanese citizens to think twice before moving there. Would it hurt them to change at least one of such laws even if is just a little?

  • @CiggySnake

    @CiggySnake

    2 жыл бұрын

    I get the reasoning behind not having dual citizenship, but it is definitely a deterrent factor regarding immigration. Fortunately, the Japanese are becoming increasingly open towards immigration (if public polling data is anything to go by), meaning the more stringent laws towards immigrants may be eased in the coming years, and to everyone's benefit arguably. Also yeah Japanese work culture is quite literally killer; it needs to be adjusted in some fashion.

    I don't see Japanese will change anytime soon with regards to their immigration policies. They have debated this for decades with no/little effect. I would make a prediction here is that if anything, they'd rather work very hard to have robots to replace human works, IMHO. So their predicted population drop by 50% in 2050 or so will happen, to be replaced by robots who will do menial works.

    Foreign immigration is not a solution to low birth rates in a country. Its merely just bringing in foreigners to take up the underclass roles that natives are not doing. Population decline can actually be a good thing in certain instances. For example the Plague in Europe decimating the Midevil population lead to peasents gaining more land, far better wages, freedoms, and eventually culminating in the renaissance. By injecting foreigners willing to work for lower wages, it impedes on that process of natural growth that all nations have gone through at one time or another.

    If they brought in too many immigrants though wouldn’t that run the risk of muddling their culture and beliefs. If their is a merge group of people who don’t partake in Japanese culture and they reproduce faster wouldn’t it be the smart assumption to make that they could replace the Japanese?

    Nah if you can't get girls in your own country you definitely won't get any in Japan. Contrary to popular belief from Western sexpats, Japan is one of the hardest countries to get with a native woman. The interracial marriage rate in Japan for Japanese females is less than 2% and has been on a downward trend as the nation gets away from the occupation of the country in WW2. In contrast, 93% of White Americans approve of interracial marriage, and 17% of new couples are interracial in the United states. I do suspect the only reason youtubers bring up this non-issue is to promote racemixing with Asian women, but is far less common than one may think. Japan is an already overpopulated country and is currently 120,000,000 people when less than 100 years ago it was 40,000,000 people. Japanese government seeks to stabilize at 100,000,000 in order to make sure overpopulation doesnt become an even bigger issue.

    The use of an image of an orangutan at 4:00 to illustrate elderly Japanese people in hospital is an error that should be corrected in this video. It is an error in an otherwise beneficial video. When calculating the proportion and cost of dependents, it is necessary to include all dependents. In some jurisdictions, when you look at the total number of dependents across all ages, it provides a different picture.
