    "Whatever you make is a unique expression of your own life experiences and that's important to share". I'm having a hard time coming up with ideas for my games and this motivated me a lott. It reminds me how game development is not only about code, it is also an art 💖

    It's not only ok, it's downright necessary. Especially when you start out. If you come from the art side of things, making assets is easy. If you come from the coding side, making assets is bloody hard. Much better to focus on coding and what you can do and get the rest from the store. Even through free models, frankly. Anything to get that first game done. After that, you can see what else might be possible.

    I don’t understand unity’s licensing at all. Like do I need to buy an asset 10x if I get 10 people working on a game with me? Do I have to track everything I buy and ensure I pay for stuff again each time a new person gets access to the repo? It’s annoying and I haven’t found any exact answers. I even had a content author say “yeah it’s just unity’s stupid asset policy bs, I really don’t give a shit”.

    Like ok so I need to spend $800 on an asset that 2 people will ever be directly using just to avoid any potential legal issues because 8 other people have access to the repo…

    Especially AAA. All of those Logos you see on the splash screen/credit roll (Havok, SpeedTree, Gameworks, etc) are 3rd party. Don't reinvent the wheel. Buy one.

    Well.. that are no assets, that are tools. Often enough standalone tools, that can be used as plugins in production, but then again, people IN these companies make these assets with the tools and NOT outside. If we go with your argument, well, then Autodesk is also 3rd party, Substance, Adobe Photoshop, etc. It doesn'T change the fact that AAA don't buy from asset stores, but hires freelancers only for that job. When he said that that triple a studios also buy assets I was so shocked. I also though if I use assets from the store I am cheating. But if triple a studios do that why can’t I do it? Also it completely changed how I look at games now 😂

    I've always thought of it in a way that my game will not look original if I use the free assets and always made my own 3D models. I quickly realized that making a 3D human sculpt is not as easy (still want to learn it though) and decided to use dummies from the asset store. It gives the game a professional look (much better than the white capsules) and gives you ability to learn more in depth with rigging and animations. Having a character in your game, even in a shape of dummy is a big must and this comes from a guy that always said no no to the asset store. Apart from characters, I use some other assets that boost the productivity and would take ages for me to find out and code myself. Sometimes it is better to use the resources that are available to you, even if you hate it because it will save you tons of time from making it all yourself and even then, you wouldn't accomplish much because it already exists in asset store. Better alternative? Download the asset and learn from it.

    I dunno, even though I know using assets is completely fine but I have some kind of an OCD or something and wants to create everything by myself ( excluding music ). The way I think is that, the engine I am using is ofcourse not built by me, but then when creating games I don't want to use anything extra other than the things provided by the engine by default. Heck I even avoid using Unity's standard assets just because they are on Asset store. But when I think about it more closely, then I realize that if it would have been there in the engine itself ( it was in Unity 2017 or before? ) , then I would have surely used it normally without any hesitation. I dunno, despite knowing that there is nothing morally wrong using assets, I always tend to avoid it. I dunno, but everytime I have to use something which is not provided by default, then I consider that as... that I haven't made the game by myself. Though with the only exception of music. And packages too ofcourse ( since they are made by Unity ).

    depends on the style of the game. If you have a bland style like (often low quality) realism or boring general stylilzed, there is a lot stores can offer. Otherwise I would rather use Asset store mainly for Blocking, looktest or similar prototyping.

    It's not the asset store, but a lot of AAA games use Quixel, which is a platform with photo-realistic PBR textures and models. It's obviously not free (and not super cheap) but it's really good. For example, I recently played through Resident Evil 3 Remake and they had the Quixel logo in the credits.

    A ton. They just don’t talk about it. Whether for prototyping or bits and pieces of the final game, AAA studios know how much it costs to do things and know when a $50 asset will save them thousands of bucks and days of time

    Hello, can you make a video on how you integrate assets in your code? I wonder how you put an abstraction between assets and your own OOP code. Also, I wonder how to put an abstraction between OOP assets and your code if you are using ECS. Thumbs up so he can see.

    I agree with everything, but if he only needs a character to test new mechanic, he should not blow money on such asset, instead he could just model a ragdoll or a "minecraft dude" and imagine he looks like a demon. If game mechanics really works, then I guess spend money on assets. His mistake in this video is trying to give too much details to a model for a PoC. There is one presentation by some guy (I forgot his name) who does prototypes with cubes only! When he finds something that "feels fun" he finds assets or modles if no such asset exists.

    I've found that the only people yelling "Asset flipper!!" are other devs. Gamers, most of whom aren't devs, are our target audience and they don't care and/or can't tell. The only thing that irks me when people use assets is when they barely make any changes from the demo scene and then fire it off to Steam.

  • @skully3242

    @skully3242

    Actually, gamers do care. No one wants to play a shitty mobile game with very obvious assets that have been used for every other unity crap title, held together by bandades, made by a 'game developer' who in reality is just a lazy guy trying to make a quick buck who took a bunch of assets from the asset store and smashed it all together only to call it their own 'game'. We need less of these kind of lazy neanderthals because they make the rest of the people who use Unity look bad. Plus, they aren't good games anyways, and they certainly aren't good game developers.

    @@skully3242 true but i think if you use assets and make them unique as possible like they say in the video, then its fine. as long as the game is fun. and honestly if you play a good looking game that plays well and is fun but dislike it or refund it or anything PURELY cuz of store assets. thats just silly

  • @skully3242
    @skully32422 жыл бұрын

    It's NOT ok if you are using those assets for actual published games you work on to make a quick buck. The assets are meant to be used as a learning tool, not just to make bad asset flipped games. If you are making your own game, you should have your own original assets, whether you hire someone to make them or you make them yourself.

    i think its okay if you don't want to sell your game. i think it's a travesty to purchase all your art assets from a generic store and call it a day, good way to NOT succeed in the business even. thats where games may get expensive, you need to hire someone if you can't cope with the demand man.
