Roger Rabbit needs to make a comeback. He was always one of my favorite cartoon characters, even though so little exists of him. He's just so colorful, and as a kid that was what I liked about him.

@@morgothfromangband6082 Nah, don't be like that. I mean I DO like Freiza more but because of his character arc and lore. Mickey is still a good char, but he's like.... um... SUPERMAN. As in there are many many more better written, designed, and deep chars than him in his own universe. The best we get is how he acts in Kingdom Hearts 2 and I don't think they will ever make a better version than that sadly.

CaptainViral84 and all fairness, that logic would apply to Tom and Jerry as well yet they’re still highly successful. I think it’s just political correctness and management at Disney that made him become much more obscure that he could’ve been. Especially during the Bob Iger era... perhaps the worst era for Disney.

Actually a big reason Roger Rabbit wasn't marketed anymore was Warner Brothers sued Disney after they allowed them to use their characters but then Disney was making bank on all the merchandising on Roger Rabbit.

There may be some kind of rabbit revival. When asked about future movies , merchandise, and even possible video games, Gary Wolfe, the writer of the original stories, has been answering with a cheerfull "Stay tooned!". He knows something is gonna happen but won't reveal the big surprise.

It's seen as a perfect fit for Toontown because of character, stylistic choices, etc-- too bright and corny for Fantasyland (even Winnie the Pooh isn't this out there) and too much ride for Hollywood Studios (and yes that is shade, I'm bitter). We don't have Toontown anymore, so it's not really a thing for us.

Eisner freaked at the budget over runs at the time. Also, Katzenberg got a percentage of the films profit over the life time of the film as well. When he left Disney he ended up suing Disney for $250 million or 2% profits from films he approved during his time at Disney. Katzenberg settled for just over $100 million in 1990's dollars. Katzenburg green lighted nearly every Disney renaissance film. Examples such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, and Aladdin to name a few.

Yes and no. The sequel turned into a prequel and it was canned. The reason however amounts to two things: the mix of live-action and cartoony CGI was not very pleasing and the estimated budget would exceed $100 million. As of now, the furthest development is that the film is a sequel and is merely in the works.

Probably a good thing it never happened. To base an entire land around one recent movie is a huge gamble, and in this case the public lost interest pretty quickly (although I still love the movie). A side note, it's hard to imagine there was a time when a movie like Rain Man could be the number one move in the year. A character-driven light drama with no special effects, no superheroes, no battle scenes...

Isn't that what they're doing with Star Wars land? Sure Star Wars has been around for a long time but the land won't be based on the Original Star Wars we've come to know and love, they'll base the land on the the new movies that only inbreds love. Seems like a gamble to me, especially because "the last jedi" literally had a petition to remove it from canon...

  • @alskndlaskndal

True it's not based on any world seen in the original three, but I think there's enough continuity to appeal to all fans (e.g., Millennium Falcon, droids). Star Wars has been mega-popular for 40 years, I think it's a safe bet!

Walt Disney World did not get a Mickey's Toontown and it's inaccurate to phrase it as though they got it first before Disneyland. They opened Mickey's Birthdayland in 1988 as a temporary area with only Mickey's house, fake facades, and circus tents (photos: d23.com/unwrapping-mickeys-birthdayland/). Interestingly, they had a sign calling it Duckberg, even though it had Mickey's house. Visiting Mickey's house and having a permanent area to meet him became very popular guests that it inspired the concept of Mickey's Toontown. After Disneyland's Toontown opened in 1993, Walt Disney World remodeled and renamed this area "Mickey's Toontown Fair" in 1996. The reason why they added "Fair" was because, even after the remodel, it was not as well-themed as the one in Toontown. They could have extensively remodeled to be the same, but they chose not to. To say it was the first Toontown is like trying to pass a prototype off as a finished product. Also, from my understanding, the original place to put Hollywoodland at Disneyland was the area behind Main Street and Space Mountain. At least, that's where they said it would be in the Disney Decade announcement.

The "nature" of the entertainment beast. It's based on If the box office of the "sequel" that will dictate If a multi million dollar attraction will pan out and survive for years. Public reception is also a key factor. Atlantis was a "bust" so Submarine Voyage with Finding Nemo, subsequently became the theme in which to bring the attraction back.

Maybe MGM really did open in 1991, and we all simply were given exclusive access to the park years prior. I remember my visit in 1989. That rabbit was HUGE! Honey I shrunk the Kids too.

Who Frames Roger Rabbit is a technical masterpiece but the titular character is incredibly grating and annoying. It's no great loss that he isn't used much by Disney.

Considering it was a co-partniership between Disney and MGM at the time, the original Disney-MGM studios had a lot more broader movie stuff originally. Did you know it was originally a real-life working tv and movie studio when it started? They actually used some of the sets for genuine movie and tv shoots!
