Thats like saying a striker has to be fast to get in behind the defence. NO! It depends on the system you are playing and the role the manager has asked you to play. Liverpool have scored 2 or more goals in 17 games straight and have lost 1 game in the last 28. TAA has 38 asissts for liverpool. His primary job is not defending it's creating chances.

The answer is because England play defensive football. All of that attacking potential and he plays defensive sitback football :(

James has shown recently that he's capable of playing in midfield, and Trent's defensive issues could be offset by playing Walker in a 3 ATB. So could definitely have all 3 of them in the same side. That might seem like building the team around TAA, but when you've got one of the best crossers in the world, why not?

Trent isn't a bad defender as much as he is so far up the pitch in an attacking roll he can't track back fast enough.....You need a DM with quality and speed to cover how Trent plays, or VVD....Klopp thinks, well he might not get back on occasions BUT how many goals does he create?? Do the maths..

That's the problem last season , VVD injury bring huge blow too how liverpool attack and defense and fabinho who does well in covering space for taa and robertson have to play in CB so they are no other Midfielder that good enough to replicate what fabinho did in cdm

Have to correct Gary here, Trent did not end up at RB 'by accident' (like Gerrard did when he broke into the Liverpool squad), but actually spoke to his coaches a couple of seasons before his debut and identified the RB position as the one he was most likely to be able to progress into the first team quickest. They then changed his position in the youth teams and focussed his training on being an attacking RB, so it's very much by design

At liverpool he's not asked to defend first he's asked to attack and keep the ball. He's not that bad in defence it's just not the main job klopp has given him.

England manager always make interesting decisions, which leads to interesting outcomes.

The day England starts playing offensive football is the day they'll understand what TAA s capable of. Why s everyone so blind to see how Liverpool plays and how that play s so mch better at unlocking Trent's true potential. It won't help complaining about Trents lack of defending when the u need to start attacking to bring out his best qualities

don't be surprised that Trent will be more involved in midfield next season. Klopp is transforming Trent every season with new challenges. There was a game this season that Trent predominantly drifted into midfield, it was obviously intentional by Klopp, I forgot which game it was. The excursion didn't work out that well for Trent and the team. Expect Klopp to tweak on that and add that midfield capability into Trent's armory.

Imagine saying Walker can be trusted defensively. He's had so many shambolic performances

He's not a World Class RB. Going forward, delivery, passing range is up there but defensively not the case, hence why he's not a World Class RB. He needs to defend as well.

It's easy to say England should play like Liverpool or City, but it's really hard. England would need to sacrifice the likes of Mount to play Liverpool's style.

You guys won’t recognize an ACTUAL WORLD CLASS QUALITY PLAYER , who would actually walk into any team in world football , club or country , if he hit you in the face … A country where people think Maguire is a top class CB , paid 80milion for him a no one batted an eye . Maguire wouldn’t start in any of the top 10 Big European clubs… smh only in England… Arnold is the best right back in world football and it is not even close … You say the man can’t defend but he plays for a team that dominates European football (except for last season when they had all their CB injured) Ps. Liverpool does not play 3 defensive mids , they play a 6 and two 8 , there is quite a subtle difference between a number 6 and a number 8. Lastly the reason England can’t play like Liverpool is because that’s intricate football that takes a World class coach (if anyone could be Klopp we’d know by now) and a lot of technically gifted and intelligent players (England doesn’t have many of those )

Everyone says he’s a bad defender but I’d love someone to name one time he’s been responsible for a goal Liverpool have conceded this season. It’s total waffle, he’s by far the best right back in England.

@@darwenrover8910 Scholes didn’t create many chances, had half as many assists as Gerrard in virtually the same number of games and nowhere near Lampard goal ratio, couldn’t tackle either. Made a career out of sideways passing to better players, in 14 years not once was he United player of the year. The reason people seem to rate him with the greats is that Zidane quite likes him.

Historically, Liverpool players haven't done as well as expected for England. In some cases (Fowler, for one), they haven't even been picked enough.

Ask anyone who isn't English and they'd pick Robertson all day long. Best LB in the world for years

Scholes nevee really did it for England, just like all the English talent of his generation.

How to get them all in a team: Formation - 523 GK - Pickford RWB - James RCB - Walker CB - Maguire LCB - Stones LWB - Shaw RCM - Alexander-Arnold LCM - Rice RW - Saka ST - Kane LW - Rashford

As long as Southgate is England manager, TAA will never be a main feature. Southgate plays a defensive style. It’s what he prefers.

Can you fault it though? Yes he was naive in the final after going 1-0 up but that style of play has won us important games and the issue with trent is that England don’t have vvd and Alisson, we have maguire stones and Pickford. Can we rely on those 3 to cover Trent’s position whilst he is helping our attack, in my personal opinion I don’t think they could and also If we played a france/Germany I’d want walker against an mbappe or a sane just as he matches them pace wise

Trent would all day rather play for liverpool than England, so I don't think he really minds if he doesn't get picked. It's funny how he just had a knock before the friendlies now is back in training ready for Watford, he nows what is more important.

As Liverpool fans, I'm happy if TAA is not played by Southgate...

IMO Trent should play CM/CDM in a 3 where he has someone like rice or Phillips or Bellingham to do his dirty work. Trent passing can be world class but defensively there are holes in his game. We should play a back 3 with Walker on the right side with James as RWB. Stick Trent in the midfield where he has people behind him so he’s less exposed and I think he could be a key player.

If Southgate chose to play 5 across the back with 2 attacking wingback, Trent will be great. James or Walker will play as one of the 3 center back.

Trent's defensive side is lacking because of the way jurgen plays if England played the same way Trent would be first choice everytime but because Southgate was a defender he plays off a solid back four/three/five and results under Southgate prove he's making the right call

Why are they so reluctant to criticise Gareth? We should've won the Euros, practically a home soil tournament. But we blew it in timid fashion just like we did against Croatia in the World Cup. Gareth's done a decent job overall, not the great one that his old pals like to claim.

It amazes me how naive former players like Lineker are to suggest TAA could play like Pirlo. A total unappreciative view of how hard that role is and the skills it requires. Passing range is just one of those - you need a lot more than that my friend.

It's tradition at this point. We wouldn't know what to do with ourselves if we actually had an effective football team who won a cup.

Even as a Chelsea fan im backing TAA over James at RB. I think Reece is on a hot streak at the moment and his attacking skillset wouldnt be as useful for England when what they need is players with the ability to create chances. England have plenty of capable scorers who are nothing without proper help

I can't take Richards serious on his football knowledge as he didn't even know what kind of striker Lineker was.

Honestly watching England being a mess is brilliant. They've always have a whole class squad but never good enough manager and and trophies to show. For a squad littered with attacking talent they play defensive football. Imagine foden, sancho and sterling getting onto Trent's balls in the box. Kane would kill to have taa delieveries at spurs. The narrative about him being bad defensively is so boring and bs. He's world class rb and dunno how this is even a debate. On the other hand I'm glad he wouldnt be risk injury with England like everyone else who gets called up

England are too defensive for Trent, Trent is head and shoulders above the rest but England’s style is boring and doesn’t suit his attacking play (also him not being great defensively is a myth anyway)

He’s the anti Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Combine the two and they would be immense.

The whole squad should be built around trent, he's the only player in the countries player pool who's out and out the best in the world on their position. You've got Henderson who's bled into playing beside him, thats what the squad should be built around, maguire isn't good enough across the ground to fo what VVD does so he needs to he swapped out, personally think stones is a much better fit on the right side of defense maybe tomori on the left and Chilwell lb, rice as a dm dropping between cbs like fab does at liverpool there's the whole defense and 2/3 of the midfield built without any thought, just don't get it 🤔

Statistically Trent make's more successful tackles then any right back/full back he also make's more successful assist/cross then any other player, he doesn't get picked because Southgate only pick's he mates, Southgate is also tactically very very poor..

They completely bottled it in the final versus Italy and Croatia exposed them in the semifinal. Southgate is a melt; he’s a PR man who says the right things and ticks lots of boxes but is not a winner. These are players in his image - a pack of cowards. Trent is very good attacking but gets exposed by a decent, determined winger / forward, such as Martinelli. Trent is not a right back. He can’t defend to save his life. Right back we have James, Walker and Trippier who are great defenders. If he wants to play every game for England he needs to move up the pitch

Honestly the only manager where Trent is the best RB in the world is under Klopp, Trent's playstyle is crafted around Klopp ideas of football, and as the only manager he's ever played right back under is Klopp he isn't ever gonna get out of the habits he has, which I why I agree for England he should be a midfielder because he played there most he's life so it's familiar to him, and it allows Southgate (or whoever is in charge of England) to craft Trent into the player they need

taa should never be allowed to play RB for any team ever.

Kyle Walker is the best all-around RB in England. Hands down. Trent could be a super-sub when you need goals.

He's too offensive, rather than defensive simple. His amount of assists will cause Southgate a headache but playing him in midfield in the English squad is just rediculous. He's England's world class RB and that is a fact, the stats at club level speak for themsleves

Kyle Walker’s pace is the best insurance against a counter attack you can have. TAA has never looked that good when he’s had a chance in an England shirt. Seems like it’s one of Southgate’s easier decisions.

Don't compare Trent to Pirlo you absolute clown. Great crosser and great striker of a ball but that's not the same as what Pirlo did but he could do that too

as a Liverpool fan this might be sounds bias but i think Liverpool players like Gerrard, Henderson and Trent have more heart and determination to play for England compared to other English superstars from United, City, or Chelsea

TAA blows hot and cold and his defending is poor. I’d much rather have Hanes in there right now. He’s a class act.

southgate plays boring safe football hoping for mistakes that england can take advantage of he hasnt got the football kowledge or coacing skills to build an attacking team thats solid at the back

Perhaps Gareth Southgate Badger thinks he's too good at penalties, so wouldn't fit in to the team very well.

James had some lucky shoots this season, dont expect to every keeper to be a spectator or the ball to hit the net anytimes soon, those are lucky shoots. when comes to delivery 8/10 balls are realy poor, for Chelsea its ok cuz he has those chances but comparing him to trent who's balls are 8/10 awesome, that what silly people do

Reece James is a great Crosser, much stronger than TAA, more defensive minded than Trent, and faster than him

@@tomburke198 I don't see teams targeting Shaw.....he had a good 8 months at United and got straight into the England team and look at this season, yet Trent had a bad 3 months and was dropped FROM THE SQUAD. Southgate has a problem with Trent no question about it

Not even just Trent, Hendo is so overlooked too! If you don’t play for United or Chelsea Southgate doesn’t wank over you 😂. The fact Henderson got benched in the euros by being injured. Yet slabhead had the same injured start to the euros. He then bins mings that didn’t put a foot wrong. Why wasn’t he binning Phillips or rice for Henderson? Southgates not the one, he don’t turn me on. It’s never coming home with him.

While we have to admit that Declan & Kal were fantastic in the Euros, Henderson is more valuable than both combined, and Southgate does indeed underutilise and disrespect Hendo by leaving him out or on the bench. In fact, Hendo should really have the armband, still, and to this day I don't understand why Gareth took it away from him in 2018--can we really say that quiet ghostlike self-centred Harry Kane has more leadership qualities than the Captain's Captain of the whole Prem?

Because England squad is consist of individuals. They are never good as a team. In football having 11 best players on the pitch in their position doesn't give you the result all the time. That's why England has been at the losing end in the tournaments. No vision or tactical preparation. If you are british. You are good to go as a manager. Pitiful honestly.

It is a great disservice to football to compare TAA to Dani Alves. Alves could run all day whether it was to overlap or to track back, could put in a tackle, could play one-twos with Messi, could put in a cross, hit a mean free kick, rile up the opponent with his antics, press like mad and generally be a pain in the a. Trent can cross and hit free kicks. That's it. Have never seen him track back, he can't tackle, gets outmuscled in the air, is ball watching at set pieces and relies on Van Dijk to bail him out. Attacking wise he is great but defensively he is a huge liability. You can't claim to be the absolute best when one part of your game is bang average.

Because England managers are boring and rely on scoring from set pieces.

Trent's not a key player because he doesn't want to be there, wasting weeks out of his season watching his Skipper flirt with Grealish.

Because Southgate is a coward. He sets up his team so defensivly and wastes all the attacking riches.

England start Maguire then complain that the RB needs to defend more? How about picking a CB that isn't a complete hindrance to the rest of the squad? Old Vesty McVestface doesn't know how to manage his squad, they will crash out the next tournament early.

Trent is not a regular English player because he can't defend. He's better off playing as a winger.
