About that circle... "Pope Benedict lX wanted to commission some paintings for St. Peter’s and so he sent a courtier around to find the best painter in Italy. The courtier asked all the artists to give him a sample of their work to send to the Pope. He came to Giotto’s workshop, explained his mission, and asked him for a drawing which would give the Pope some idea of his competence and style. “Sure,” said Giotto; and he laid down a sheet of paper, reached for a brush dipped in red paint, closed his arm to his side to make a sort of compass of it, and in one even sweep scribed a perfect circle. “There you are,” he told the courtier, handing it to him with a smile. “That’s your drawing?” asked the courtier, who didn’t know whether Giotto was pulling his leg. “Is that all you’re going to send His Holiness?” “That’s more than enough,” said Giotto. “Send it with your other drawings and see whether it’s understood or not.” The Pope’s messenger took the drawing and went away trying to hold his temper. Did that little painter think he was a fool? When he got back to Rome he showed the Pope the big O and told him how Giotto had scribed it-freehand, without a compass. The pope and his advisers DID understand the achievement of that O and gave Giotto the commission." theorbitbrown.com/site/the-perfect-circle/

When I draw a circle freehand, I try to move my pen with a constant amount of curvature, so it turns at the same speed all the way around. This is actually fairly easy with practice, especially if you go slow. If your "circle" doesn't have constant curvature, then it will typically end up looking egg-shaped, since some places will be more curved than others.

I appreciate good teachers like Mr. Woo, who take the time to break everything down at the beginning. My trig teacher was a nice guy, and he meant well, but he was pretty worthless at explaining things. I was very good at geometry, and fair at algebra, so I expected trig to be within my reach. Unfortunately, my trig teacher just could not make sense of it to me. He suffered from a classic problem that many educated people have. He understood it, and could not understand how anyone else had a problem understanding it. Decades later, when I was an adult, I bought one of those "For Dummies" books that was on trig. That book showed me what I needed to know, but was never made clear in my class. It was finding out that the trig functions are used to find a number that you then take to a set of tables that will give you the final answer. The first weeks of class were spent practicing the functions and I could not see any point because the teacher failed to explain why it was done. I have purchased a half dozen trig text books over the years, and realized why my old teacher made such a mess of it, all of the text books ignored providing the information until several chapters in. Then I found a copy of an old book that was out of print, "Fun With Mathematics", by Jerome S. Meyer. The book all sorts of math stuff in it, but one of the things it had was a chart giving rough trig information. You could calculate a triangle to a degree with just that chart. It made it very clear that it's just ratios. Mr. Woo, have you ever seen that book, or the chart?

The pope and his advisers DID understand the achievement of that O and gave Giotto the commission." theorbitbrown.com/site/the-perfect-circle/
common we just cannot ignore that perfect circle ..like how ???????? i cannot even make it with a compass with my hands shaking

Dear Eddie, when I was a Mature returning Uni student studying maths, I used your videos. Now I am a Maths teacher and I am using your videos again to improve my teaching! THANK YOU!!
I love hearing the kids in the class go "Ohhhh...!" as the light comes on. That's a beautiful sound.
because triangles are hidden every . . . Good introduction on trigonometry. Thanks!

Daniel Schmaniel And I love how there's a whole set of functions in calculus dedicated to trig, I love how trig creeps its way into physics, I love the vector proof of the cosine law, trig is GREAT
He made a perfect circle 👽
That circle su*ks, wish I could make such a circle effortlessly. You are perfect in everything sir.
man if only we had a teacher this good!
Thank you for teaching me. That actually made sense - and I could see several triangles per rotation of your key lanyard, in fact, I began seeing full, third and half triangles all over the board as well. Subbed.
I love this guy!!! He gives such a better, deeper explanation of things!!
You have taught me so much through your videos! Thank you!
Sir, you're an amazing teacher. I wish I had a teacher like you.
You're my favorite. You explain difficult topics so simply. Thanks.
How on Earth did you draw that circle?! I need to know.
@RolandThePaladin1

When I draw a circle freehand, I try to move my pen with a constant amount of curvature, so it turns at the same speed all the way around. This is actually fairly easy with practice, especially if you go slow. If your "circle" doesn't have constant curvature, then it will typically end up looking egg-shaped, since some places will be more curved than others.

from the moment you wake up and get out of bed you are in a three domentional world or universe if you like we don't live in 1 dimention we live in three. Everything ccan be expressed in numbers but just know where exactly are for example complex numbers are used a lot in smart phone programing these days. good luck
I wanted to say that I love your videos, as a physics student at university I sometimes get fed up and people like you help me remember why I love maths.
Appreciate this guy's enthusiasm. He likes his topics and he's able to communicate them well. Thumbs up!
Love your videos. They're amazing and they teach me so much
Excellent explanation! Once you have the eyes to see them, triangles are everywhere!
Great illustration.
THANK YOU for finally helping me to understand trigonometry. For years teachers told me to memorize without really grasping the underlying concepts.
holyshit that circle is perfect
Explained so well!!
i wish i had a teacher like u when i first learnt trigonometry!!!
Great energy in the classroom.
I always remember learning that the Unit Circle can be a metaphor for the seasonal cycle.
This was really eye-opening, thank you. Triangles really are everywhere 🤯
Amazing explaination
Damn he's teaching soo well! Atleast I am happy that I have a good maths teacher here
Great explanation of what trigonometry is, thanks.
COVID 19 brought me to Eddie Woo but now I’m hooked, oh, and just to mention I’ve nit long turned 60. Yeah, maybe to old to learn but not to old for revision.👍😄🤔🤪😳😁

I've been struggling with my degree in engineering for some quite time lately... As a freshman, I've decided to review some fundamentals in math and I find this lecture reallly helpful. He does not only teach the basics but also he tries to make sense of topics for his students like what is trigonometry really for.
Thank you sir. You are a great inspiration.
man you're awesome
I retain information much more when I know the history and the "why". This is great, I'm sure it's lost in the kids who simply have to be there . I'd hope an AP class would appreciate this though.
