I don't think some people know what cultural appropriation is. They're just looking for something to be offended. This is just anecdotal, but I've also seen this many times and most of these people that get offended are not even part of the culture/ethnicity. In other words, they're getting offended on behalf of a group they're not a part of.

Just an FYI... dreadlocks are found in many cultures, including German, Scandinavian, African, Pacific Islander, Australian Aboriginals, Vikings, Asian, Christian cultures, as well as North & South Americans.... plus Ancient Egypt! Appreciation of a particular hairstyle or piece of clothing is not cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation is a disrespectful act depicting a minority group, in a way that is degrading and celebrating a stereotype in a negative way.

Fun fact: Those dreadlocks could also be fairy locks. In norse mythology fairy-locks (or elflocks) are the result of fairies tangling and knotting the hairs of sleeping children and the manes of beasts as the fairies play in and out of their hair at night. This hair style looks incredibly similar if not identical to dreadlocks. There is no hairstyle that belongs to one culture. Many cultures have done hairstyles that are stereotypical to another culture. Stop gatekeeping hair

Cultural appropriation is a useful term for people who make a mockery out of your culture during Halloween for example, or when a dominant culture claims ownership over something that was invented by a minority culture without acknowledging the minority culture, but when it's used to bully people who are just being themselves and not interfering with your life in any way, it's toxic and sad. People misuse it as a way to feel superior to others, it's born from insecurity. And it's also sad that people these days need everyone to perfectly adhere to an unrealistic ideal they arbitrarily set.

Thank you for this comment!! Sorry in advance for ranting, but I need to get this off my chest. idk about this comment section cause I didn’t go through it too thoroughly, but something I often see in KZread shorts is people denying the existence of cultural appropriation!! Like, sure, it would be nice to believe that claiming parts of someone’s culture because of online trends isn’t harmful, but it is; it’s ignorant at best and malicious at worst. People misuse the term a lot, like in this example, and it just gets more people believing that cultural appropriation was never a thing in the first place. It’s just so frustrating to see..

Listen. My thing with dreads is basically always if your hair can form it naturally, then awesome! You have fun with your own hair. But if you have to do some extreme things to maintain them, like never wash or brush your hair, they WILL grow mold in them or cause damage to your scalp. So just do what’s healthy for you and keep them maintained well

As a POC who spent a lot of time in social circles with new age people like her, I’ll tell you it’s not the dreds or the dream catcher specifically that’s the issue. It’s the way that these people basically take whatever aspect of a culture they can make into this pan spiritual aesthetic, blending them together in a way that often goes directly against the deeper philosophy of each individual culture, to serve whatever purpose the individual has (often to look cool and awakened online, sometimes also to make money). For example the incredible oversimplification about law of attraction and karma, they misuse all of these things from Eastern spirituality to basically not be accountable for anything. Social injustice happening around them? They’ll say “oh those people attracted that, it’s their energy and karma, I don’t need to help them, they need to learn.” Obviously they don’t have that attitude when they’re the ones that are in need of help (!). Most Eastern philosophy heavily stresses social and community responsibility and self discipline, which also means reviewing your mindset. This is a deep process which changes your world, but most people like her don’t engage. Instead they learn a tiny bit, think they’re a master and then try to make a lot of money off selling courses on things they barely understand and hyping up their spiritual influencer image on social media. I’m reallllly curious how much “Native American” she is, a lot of white Americans are waaaay too proud that one of their ancestors probably r*ped a native woman and now use that fact as a goddam shield to deflect justifiable criticism of their actions. She in no way would be ID’d as native by racists and would not be subject to state violence on that basis so unless she actually grew up with Native American family members that really seems like a bad excuse more than anything else. I’ve tried teaching yoga philosophy to these people because they claim they’re so into it, and it’s a waste of time, none of them are willing to go deep and recognize their ego patterns, they literally make up fake ones that aren’t even the actual issue, post about it on IG live like they’re so deep, then go into a shop and buy crystals literally mined by child slaves in Afghanistan and then do another IG live about why it’s so important to eat vegan because we must be kind to animals, and then don a Native American headdress meant only for a senior tribe member and made with real animal feathers. The hypocrisy could give you whiplash.

Fam... Take a second and chill out a bit. I think you are overgeneralizing the new age spiritual people, not all of them are as insufferable as youve described. Ive met plent who are kind, loving, and they want peace and happiness for all. The rest of this is a story, because assuming all white people with "native american" in them came from r4pe is inaccurate, although there is a history to that too. It just aint my family history, so ima share you mine 😊 I have a small percentage of cherokee in my heritage, cause my great great great grandpa (white) married my great great great grandma (native) on my maternal grandfathers side. Now im not gonna say im connected to the culture at all, I aint. But she wasnt r4ped. The story after her is the sad one. Her son (my great great grandpa) was mixed/aka mulatto. He was treated terribly his whole life for it, he was ashamed of his native heritage and he taught future generations to be ashamed as well, because he truely did internalize the racism he was subject to. Of course, in those times, Cherokee natives had to register with the government and get "papers" but that man was so ashamed that he only passed his papers down to those who also felt the shame of being natives. Rumor in the family is that someone still has those papers, but they remain hidden and secret to whoever possesses them. Now i dont believe its caused by the internalized racism anymore, but instead because my family is conservative as heck and doesnt want anybody taking "handouts". Theyd rather us lose that family history than have the potential for someone to use it. All that despite the family having grown up in poverty for generations upon generations, the cycle is only recently being broken by my grandparents, but not my mom/dad so the cycle has resolidified itself. The culture has been successfully killed because of hate, and i wish my ancestor wouldve been able to love and accept himself more, but he couldnt, so it is what it is. Now, i hope i get to see them one day and learn more about that story, but if I do, ima still leave that money to cherokee folk who are connected to the culture, as theyre more deserving, and i dont ever wanna take from those who are more in need than myself.

Just because you started doing it 50 yrs ago doesn't mean its your culture.. im so done with hateful people that take/steal other people culture then act like its always been their culture and now only they can do it ...

Cultures are supposed to be celebrated and shared. If white people can’t braid their hair, have dreads or wear traditionally black clothing, then with that mindset black people shouldn’t be allowed to straighten their hair, celebrate Halloween, or wear traditionally white clothes. If we just kept our cultures within our own races it would be a disaster. White people benefit off traditionally black things and black people benefit off traditionally white things. So please share your cultures and don’t shame someone else for wearing or doing something that’s from your culture, because that person most likely just likes your culture and is genuinely interested. ❤️

I agree with you, but if the hair styles have historic significance then they should not be used by people who didn’t use them before. Also keep in mind hair types. For example if you braid straight hair (cornrows) it will damage the hair

@@Howtobecool101.0working within your hair type is different than preserving history. But even so with the hair/damage thing, if someone wants to damage their hair for a style...let them. People melt their hair with bleach and cause breakage from styling all the time. It is silly to say someone shouldn't wear a certain style because of some (sometimes obscure) historical factor. For those in those cultures, if it is important enough to them to preserve it, then they should be thrilled to see the hair/fashion/style spread across the world. Cultures and traditions die otherwise.

Yo, as an actual short busser in my past school life. Im not sure whether to be mad about this, or to laugh. Cause we do be smarter than that 💀 Some "smart" people just dont use their brains any more so i would say theyre a bit t@rded. Clarification - I was there cause sped, i had very severe emotional difficulties growing up due to ptsd. I also have a learning disability, but they kinda dropped the ball there cause they never figured that out (I did when I was 20)
