As a Dutch person I love seeing Ray in these video’s. Although I knew the term “waterpomptang” I always thought it got its name as a tool to remove water pumps. Until Ray explained the handle of the plier is similar to old waterpumps. Amazing what you can still learn.

Tip for Ramond; Hé Ray - vermoedelijk de langste timmerman in NZ - ik vind het altijd leuk om jou bij Scott in de video te zien. Soort van Nederlandse trots. Leuk dat je het daar 'voor elkaar hebt' maar ik moet even een beetje oud hollands katten maat. Dat was geen waterpomptang maar een pijp- of pijpentang, ook wel stillsonsleutel (naar de uitvinder, Daniel C. Stillson). Sorry maar ik ben een beetje gereedschapfreek enne,....nou ja. Thank you, Scott. We visited New Zealand and hiked through native forests like these, including at Abel Tasman National Park. They were one of the most beautiful things we ever experienced. I'm glad the people of New Zealand are trying to preserve something of what they have.

***Q&A Question*** Scott, have you always been so level headed and calm about the building process? If not, then any tips on how to not stress out like crazy when managing a big job? Just also wanted to say that I have loved the channel ever since I started my apprenticeship all the way to now as I’m starting my own building company in Sydney (Benchmark Carpentry). You’ve been a massive inspiration to me along the way, not only the work you do, but your attitude towards life seems to be so genuine and ecstatic. Exact same marital thickness planer I have. Had it for about 10 years. You won't be disappointed with it; for its size it does a great job. Hook it up to a dust extractor to assist getting the woodchips out the way. Can you include Ray in some of the Q & A? I'd be interested in knowing the ratio of hours you spend a week in; planning, buying matrials; doing the job; time taken up positioning and recording; number of cameras you use; time spent at the computer preparing the episode; etc. Love your work guys!

I laughed so hard when you tried to use the standard vacuum head to suck up the thicknesser chips. They would fill your vacuum so fast. You need a proper dust extractor like your table saw extractor to deal with them. 😅

Why doesn't Jess start her own Gardening channel? She has some notoriety now, and this great platform to help it grow. Sort of a Learn with Me channel but she's learnt so much about it, she knows far more than the average person. Her knowledge on this would be really useful. Plus, it has the potential to double your income, and double your sponsorships and finally Jess can get into the Free Stuff. :D

Hey Scott! Love your work. Not sure if this would fit in your Q&A: As a hearing care professional I’d love if you can keep promoting hearing protection. We see a lot of noise induced hearing loss in tradies and it often is because they don’t bother with proper PPE/ear protection. Paying with permanent damage to their ears later. Thanks mate!

Kudos for using the advanced design technique of letting the floor tell part of the story of the house and not getting perfectionist about trying to make everything "match". Please consider limewash paint for at least one of the large walls. It can provide a lush color and subtle texture combination that can turn a wall into something to contemplate.

It's also called ; Vandpumpetang in Danish.. When i built/laid my floors in my old house, the screws i got, was also with a squarehead bit. Looking good, and spring is coming in NZ, i love the NZ spring and summer, so maybe i'll go back later this year..

Nice thickness planer! I use them all the time and I’ve noticed sometimes the direction of the grain matters with blowout or chip out. It’s nice when it’s figured out and it makes for less sanding.

I'd love to see a top 10 section of must have tools 10 basic 10 intermediate and 10 Pro tools from the smallest tools to the ones that would take your timber work to the next level

As a French🇨🇵 i can tell is not habitual to use square head screws it an exception... As Ray said in Europe Philips#1#2, Pozidriv#1#2 are more common but now a days most of the time on jobsite we use torx screws (T15, T20, T25 and T30). How i know about Robertson screws because sometimes our materials suppliers send us square screws #2. Another supplier was delivered us stainless square screws #1.😢 The last one was terrible to use because the head was getting round so quick...

Hi Scott! Reno is looking great :) I mentioned this on an episode a month or so ago but there were moments in this video that I really loved so thought I’d share again. The moment without music, especially you and Jess at the end worked really well, for me at least. I felt more connected and actually found myself watching more actively. Hi Scott and Jess. Great channel. Finally got round to subscribing to you guys. I have nearly seen all your videos after coming across your channel just before you moved to Nelson. I found one of your videos on building steps really helpful as my son is living/working on a dairy farm in Waikato and previous contract milker built a deck in front of house but didnt make steps. son is really busy as is owner so I offered to build some steps but stringer method looked to complicated so used your series of box type steps method. It worked well and the owner was pleased enough to pay me a few hundred $$, crazy, as I was just doing it for my family to access deck easier. So thank you Scott for the great tuitional videos. Keep on building and I love the renovation work you are doing. I'm a retired farm manager and ramp worker and aircraft refueller.

Q&A Question - Any future additions or planning related to your garage workshop that you're thinking about and willing to share? Square bit screws originate from here in Canada, square bit is called a “Robertson/Robbie” advantage of it is that the screw won’t fall off in any position it is being held. Great work on the Reno… I’ve been watching since prior to your move and also past videos.

Keep all that trimmings/sawdust etc from milling the Rimu. DON"T throw it away. Store it in a dry place and you will find that it is perfect when put though an old coffee grinder to fill nail holes in your Rimu floors. They will simply disappear if added to a little glue.

Thank you Ray the carpenter for telling me the plumber how the waterpomptang get´s its waterpomp into the name!! Allways believed it to have something to do with the water in the plumbing job, never found the pomp to have a good explanation. Happy with this knowledge!! Allthough i am not sure if the size of pliers you where using on that macadamia still is a waterpomptang, it sure has the same handle style. I know that one either as a "Zweedse tang" or in short as a "moordenaar"

Hi Scott, Jess, and Ray. Looking good. A bit surprised that the Makita thicknesser doesn't have a fitting to connect to a vacuum for chip extraction. Your Carbatec dust extractor would be perfect if it could be connected. I have a similar dust extractor connected to my thicknesser and there are next to no chips flying about.

A tip for your track saw. Place a piece of painter's tap over the window to the nut that secures the blade. This will greatly increase dust collection.

You can buy a custom plastic cover for lot of plunge saws to do same job,same result as tape, the increase in dust collection is pretty impressive

Ahhhh, floor sanding. That can only mean "dust storm!" inside the house. Back in the day (late 1980s) I had my previous house in California where I had the carpeting removed which exposed beautiful oak flooring. Needless to say I had it removed and refurbished because it didn't have a subfloor. The contractor saved all the oak flooring planks and refurbished then reinstalled them. The sanding part was the worst part of the project because it created a thick layer of dust in many areas.

Question for Q&A - When are you bringing merch back! I'd love a long sleeve white t-shirt with a SBC van on it!

My house is rimu, and when you cut a 4x2 it has at least 50 rings in the cross section, its hard as nails.

Always interesting to see how you do things. Looks like those last floorboards were quite tight to the wall. In the UK, we'd normally leave a gap around the perimeter of up to 10mm for expansion, which is then covered by the skirting. Congratulations on the 400th video coming up!!

Square head screws are called Robertson's (a Canadian invention). Really interested story when taken into context versus the American preferred Philips head screws and eventually star drive.

You have Rimu, I have elm. Beams, lintels, floorboards, doors, door jams, joists all elm but there isn’t any more so conserve every bit that’s not too wormy.

I love my Makita thicknesser! I’m sure you’ll get plenty of good use out of it too. Perhaps look at upgrading the cutter block to a spiral type to give a cleaner finish and easier to sort blades out when you inevitably hit a hidden nail!

An old broad knife is a handy backing when levering flooring against plasterboard to avoid holes or dents in the wall.

If you regularly resaw rimu lumber, a bandsaw would be an easier option. It is a thinner kerf. It also gives you the excuse to purchase a decent quality bandsaw for your carpentry business.

My house rimu studs, joists, beams, matai floor boards. Built 1923. 100 years ago in September. Same family owners 👍👍

Hi Scott and Jess. We used that exact colour of velvet curtian in our master bedroom (our last house). It looked really dramatic without being overpowering. We had a wallpaper with the same green in it.

Robertson head hardware - a good Canadian invention ! Although I do question the necessity for the free and red sizes.

Hi following from Scotland what got me hooked to your channel was the deluge hammer, I own one and it's the best hammer in the world bar none. After 28 years of joinery I developed carpool tunnel syndrome.. Maybe all in my mind but CTS gone in three weeks of using deluge hammer. Also puts a 4 inch nail quicker than any eastwing. Keep up the good work!

Hey scott. a floorsander can take off like 2 mm at a time with a low grit paper. so that level diff is no problem :)

Kiwis are nocturnal and very shy. They are not extinct, but endangered, In the wild, they are a target of introduced predators, however there is a comprehensive conservation effort. What you saw was a weka, which are common and just a damn nuisence. Too tough for even the introduced predators, mainly. Dodos are extinct for centuries.
