We are group of Catholic filmmakers and designers who are crafting a gorgeous and compelling documentary on the Catholic Church’s most cherished tradition: the Latin Mass. The same Mass that nourished the soul of St. Thomas Aquinas as he wrote his Summa and that helped St. Patrick to convert Ireland is available to this day, yet many do not know about it.
This is the Mass of history, the Mass of the saints, and its popularity is growing. Why are young people flocking to this ancient Mass as soon as they learn of it? It is the only way to restore the morality and reason that once made Christendom a just society that was pleasing to God.
In this documentary, special care is given to portray this precious sacrificial liturgy with the reverence and awe it deserves. The filmmakers will interview Catholics from all walks of life to investigate the power of the old Mass and the profound effect it has on our spiritual lives. The aim is to show that the loss of faith the Church has experienced in the last half century will only be repaired once there is a return to Christ and His real presence in the Eucharist, and that the Traditional Latin Mass is where we are to receive Him and worship Him with the utmost solemnity and adoration.

What an interesting podcast; you both whet the appetite to love the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass all the more. I am a priest (44 years ordained). Since rediscovering the traditional Mass of my boyhood years when I was an altarboy; my love for worship God in the Mass ad orientem has dramatically increased. Mass ad populum while certainly valid in that the Eucharist is convected; does not touch my soul as profoundly. Thank you for this podcast! -- Fr Robert Gonzales (DIiocese of Tucson)

What makes the TLM superior, is the fact that it's not noisy, it exudes Silence for meditation and praying along in the hand Missal, also one can get all caught up in the sense of The Holy in the Mass. The Ordinary Form does not do this, it does not leave enough room for Silences and reflections, etc.

The tradition of the church is to pray in the common language so that people may engage in the mass. Latin is no longer a common language and Jesus actually speaks about this in the bible. Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for their rigid beliefs that made it hard for believers. One of their rigid beliefs is that they should only pray in Hebrew bec that was the language of Adam. God bless.

@@themoderncatholicwarrior7216 'The tradition of the church is to pray in the common language so that people may engage in the mass.' Are you saying that people who attend the TLM are unable to engage in the Mass ? That comes across as uncharitable and not to mention false I'm unaware of this tradition of the Pharisees that one should only pray in Hebrew (if could provide a citation of this) but even if I were to accept that it's true - noone anywhere is making the claim that any and all prayer should only be in Latin.

@@SuperSaiyanKrillin Hi, it is not false. I grew up with the Latin mass and most people who attend cannot truly engage such as myself using a st. Joseph's daily missal. All you end up doing is your own private devotions or the rosary which the SSPX actually encourages bec these are good prayers but it is actually an abuse to say these prayers during the mass. I'll have to get back to you on the Pharisees reference, I got it from Brant Pitre's origin of the bible studies but I don't have it offhand. However, the SSPX refuses to say mass in any other language other than Latin and even encourages the saying of prayers in Latin bec it is better. The Traditional Catholic movement which comes from the SSPX teaches that Latin is better and the devils fear Latin, this breaks the first commandment. All you have to do is follow the word of God which clearly shows that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to the apostles that they may worship in the individual language of the nations not one specific language.

@@themoderncatholicwarrior7216 Where did you ever get that definition of tradition using the common language? The Mass is the Sacrifice of the New Law, the people do not engage in it at all. The definition of a sacrifice is the offering of a victim, by a priest to God alone, and the sacrifice must be consumed. The only one who engages in the Mass is the priest. I really think you need to study the Mass.

It is not wrong to say that the NO has things that can be improved in order to better present the Eucharistic Mystery and edify the people (thats what conciliar fathers said about the TLM in the Second Vatican Council). It is not wrong either to say that many of those things to improve are already present in the TLM

When I was growing up in the 1930's the parish had a s A children's mass st 9 in which we children sag in pews according to your grade in school , the mass was said in English and one of the assistant priests would lead his intrdponses. This ess to reach us thhr prayers and responses, the priest would br saying the rr5hular Latin mass. This really taught us the mass and its prayers. There was s little paper prayer book called Pray the Mass WIth the Priest which each was given to each child. We also had cathidian class every Saturday morning. There were nuns from a nearby convent who taught he classes. Again we were divided y grades. The priest taught the older grades. The result of this we really understood the mass, and of us hot Latin english prayer books as er hot early.

Proponents of the N.O. Mass will often say that a person going to daily Mass will hear the whole Bible in church over a three-year period, and this is one of the arguments put forth in favor of the vernacular. However, the fact is that you hear approximately 90% of the Gospel, 55% of the Epistles and Apocalypse and 13% of the Old Testament.

The Mass of Paul VI atomized the elements of the Mass including the readings so that they're no longer interrelated in any way. The resulting melange of Mass prayer texts and readings have nothing to do with each other or with the Liturgy of the Hours in which they are supposed to be situated. The practical effect is that the Mass has been turned into a liturgical cul-de-sac with a variety of elements and readings which are all (more or less) randomly generated and move independently from each other like so many spinning cogs in a broken machine. This makes Mass super boring because the sensible effect is that none of these elements and readings have anything to do with the other elements and readings. The worshipper gets the feeling that the Introit isn't related at all to the Collect, which has nothing to do with the 1st Reading which has nothing to do with the Gradual which has nothing to do with the Gospel or the Communio, etc. The real tragedy is that the Mass readings have been broken off from the Liturgy of the Hours so that none of the readings or prayer elements of each have anything to do with each other. The sad challenge that the homilist has each Sunday is to take each of these unrelated elements and introduce some sort of thru line. This task isn't easy. The challenge for the homilist is to produce the liturgical and Scriptural appearance of harmony and premeditated purpose where there is none. Most often, the prayer texts of the Mass are chosen by the caprice of the presider that matches the apparent lack of harmony of the readings . All of this is in stark contrast with the traditional Latin Mass. In the traditional Missal, Scriptural readings and other elements fit with each other like a jeweled diadem. Holy Mass and the Breviary (aka Liturgy of the Hours) fit with each other hand in glove and provide the greatest mediation and exposition of Holy Scripture the world has ever known.

That is very true. Especially obvious with Masses of the Saints (when they ever occur!), where the ferial readings can be chosen, and the Mass of a given Saint becomes your normal ferial Mass with literally no relation to the Saint. While the TLM may overuse some readings (esp. for Confessors), they are always appropriate.

You know what else the vast majority of Catholics have never experienced? The Mass of St Paul VI celebrated according to the directives of the Second Vatican Council, actually following the GIRM, and as Pope Benedict XVI showed it should be done by his example. The Mass of Paul VI has not been tried and found wanting, it hasn't been tried. The comparison between a current Mass of Pius V (as opposed to the reality of how mass was routinely offered in the early part of the 20th century) with a run-of-the-mill Mass of Paul VI at a mid-20th Century American parish is a total straw man and false comparison. An accurate and honest comparison would be between the missal of 1962 compared with the missal of 2002 done in the same church by the same priests, both following the actual rubrics and directives (stock vs stock, in other words). The vernacular is an OPTION for the 2002 missal, not a requirement. Look up ANY 2002 Mass done by Pope Benedict, Cardinal Sarah, or say the Oxford or London Oratories. That is the Mass of Paul VI as it was designed and intended to be done. How do we know? Because that's what Benedict/Sarah have said, and I'd suggest that they know what they've talking about.

Its a lie...he can say anything he likes however the Mass composed by Bugnini is not that of the Bishops at the Vatican Council and it is not in accordance with the document of the liturgy they voted on. Fr Louis Bouyer exposed the process. In addition numerous changes are deforms that followed from 1970 onwards. These went beyond boundaries of reason. The new Mass isn't the traditional Mass in English... it's a new thing. The Church did not begin in 1970. Continuity has to be real and evident not simply claimed when facts deny it has. The Pope has attacked Catholics who believe the whole historic package and naturally revere the bishops and pope. When authority is destructive of the very foundatuons it rests on and attacks people of fidelity...something is very wrong.

@@johnfisher247 you can have your view, John, but if you want to be a faithful Catholic, you must give "religious submission of mind and will" to all of the teaching of Francis as per Lumen Gentium 25: "This religious submission of mind and will must be shown in a special way to the authentic magisterium of the Roman Pontiff, even when he is not speaking ex cathedra; that is, it must be shown in such a way that his supreme magisterium is acknowledged with reverence, the judgments made by him are sincerely adhered to, according to his manifest mind and will.
