Why is the SmartPlug Better than the Traditional Twist-Style RV Electrical Plugs?

The Smart Plug is the highest quality electrical plug in the RV industry. This is the ultimate solution to replacing your standard twist plug, and it completely eliminates typical heat issues due to poor electrical contact. The standard twist plug that comes on many RVs have problems with electrical transfer because of minimal contact from the plug to the inlet. The Smart Plug has 20 times more contact and this makes for efficient electrical transfer and drastically reduces the heat on the plug. If you have a standard twist plug on your RV then you need to get that changed to the Smart Plug today!

    Recently sold our RV and got a different one. We had a Smart Plug on the last one and adding a Smart Plug to the latest one was one of the first things we did after getting it. Love the ease of use and peace of mind it provides. We got the Smart Plug cord this time instead of converting our existing cord. It's MUCH nicer quality and longer than the cord that came with the RV. Smart Plug, for us, was a minor investment to help prevent future issues and frustrations.

    The only issue with the twist lock ring I've had is when I am hurrying the process not getting the lock ring started correctly.. For $ 206 for the "Smart Plug", I will slow down. That is crazy expensive.

    Thanks Dan, it is certainly a upgrade. IT is not just the connection, but also better electrical transfer because of the thicker, bigger pins, and this means less heat on the plug, always a good thing. Eric

    Love the idea. I have been concerned with connectability of the twist lock style connection. Love the Angle out of the power cord on the old style twist. . Why is this new plug not built with the angle of the power cord out of the plug? Seems like its now a weak point for the cord and strain relief over time.

    Hey Robert, The one thing that everyone notices when holding the smart plug is that it is built like a tank. The unit also locks into place, so the straight cord does not present an issue with sagging. On the twist plugs, the 90 degree cords can relieve stress on the plug because a gap usually exists between the plug and the inlet. I hope this helps answer your question. Eric

    I know that the size of the contact area of the twist type connector vs the smart plug is part of their advertising but the mathematician in me says that given similar sized connectors, the area of the surface connected would be minimally different.

    Hey John, understood, and I have not taken a set of calipers to them, but they are thicker and larger in size. The manufacturer would have taken the measurements and come up with how much larger it is than the typical twist style. I have looked at both of them completely broken down and you can visually see the difference. Eric

    The twist style is really not that bad IMO, the whole "surface area" theory is a bit of a stretch. The twist style is not anywhere near as hard to connect as what you showed, surely you were exaggerating all the problem you had connecting it as part of your sales pitch for the "new and improved" expensive fix.

    Can you tell me the difference between the kit and buying the outlet and the power cord? Does the kit come with a power cord or just a plug that we have to put on our own cord after striping off the old connector?

  • @Technorv

    @Technorv

    Hi Scott, If you get the inlet and the power cord, then you would only be replacing the inlet on your RV, and your new power cord would have the Smart Plug head already on it. So your old cable would not be used with this scenario. If you buy the kit with the inlet and plug, then you would replace the twist plug on your existing cable with the Smart Plug head in the kit, and then change the inlet. Both ways get you the new inlet, the difference is do you use your existing cable and replace the head, or just buy the cable with the new head already installed. I hope this helps. Eric

    Thanks for your opinion Paula. Without putting your hands on this unit and experiencing the quality build, I can see that being your opinion. Once RVers get this unit they wished they had made the change sooner. If we see you down the road maybe we can show you one of these, in the meantime, safe travels.. Eric

    @@Technorv And I am one of those RVers! Hubby and I are big fans of the Smart Plug. Did the the spinny twist lock thing that came stock on the RV work? I believe so. Was it annoying and challenging to use at times? Yep. Was I often uncertain I had it twisted right and the spinny thingy on straight? Yep. And what happens when the spinny thing breaks? Not awesome. Smart Plus is a minimal investment for a reassuring fix that also helps me be less frustrated during what can sometimes be a frustrating situation (setting up at a campground, with your spouse). A great -- optional -- product for RVers! If RV manufacturers were really nice, though, they would make these things stock.

    I recently purchased the smartplug and like it. The reasons you give are kind of lame. If plugging in, rotating and tightening the calor I'd that difficult, I feel sorry for the person. It would be more helpful to show the difference in electrical resistance between the two. That said. The difference between the two is mostly design and configuration of the same type of materials and does not justify the insanely high cost for it. Like I said. I bought it due to hearing a sizzling sound when I plugged the factory one in.

    Hi Mike, Thanks for your opinion here. We are finding that RVers are demanding more quality in their electrical transfer and the Smart Plug delivers. I wish you would give the Smart Plug a try because I know your opinion would change once you try it. Every RVer that makes the switch wished they would have done it sooner. Safe Travels. Eric
