Not even for companies, small to middle big businesses pay a lot of tax, and have seen their tax increase in the past years while big companies/internationals have seen their tax shrink

As a Dutch man I want you to know that on this moment there are roughly around 830.000 Dutch people that live beneath the poverty line of which 220.000 are children. It is estimated that in 2024 the total number of people living beneath the poverty line will be around 1 million. Given that we don't even have 18 million people living in the Netherlands, the number of people living beneath the poverty line is far bigger than you would think.

It also depends on how high or low you set the poverty line. When I am in NL I only see lots of cars, full restaurants and bars and a very crowded airport. The 'official' poverty statistics are rather overdone, I feel. Dutch do like to co,plain and bitch especially about their own country despite the amount of wealth that is visible.

People "never giving up" depends on situation and goal. Someone entering Europe from sub Saharan Africa would give 100 times more effort to enter Netherlands, but not much to develop his situation through education and training, after landing in Europe, because the goal is to enter a welfare state.

Rich my ass, as of right now 1/3 of the Dutch households are struggling to pay their bills and its about to get much worse with the high inflation.

We were never rich to begin with. We had a chance to become rich, in the 60ies, 70ies and it was destroyed from mid 80ies onwards. Now, most people are relatively poor; that is; their houses belong to the bank and with the millions depending on state benefits, added as soon as a crisis hits (this winter) all the non producing jobs (which is a LOT) and minimal wage jobs will result in more than half the population having no means of survival. I wouldnt call that rich. It is the globalist idea of monetary and economic measure that is completely unrealistic and dangerous, that tells us we are rich. But we arent. My grandfather at least OWNED his house. Few can say that nowadays. Meanwhile the population doubled since then, solely because of mass immigration. Its not going to end well, soon.

Living in the Netherlands is really expensive. But if you fall in the lower class you can get a lot of support from the government which helps. However when you transition towards the 'middle' class the wealth gain is verry little compared to the effort you need to put in, because as you get more income and can start building wealth you end up gradually losing those benefits. Transitioning from the upper ends of the middle class to the high class is always a benefit because you have in most cases already lost all possible benefits you could get. This is one of the problems that the Netherlands is facing now and it is partially the cause of the workers shortages we are experiencing. Another issue we have is the housing of refugees that yield no actual invesment return, however this is kind of the obligation that a wealthy country should have to the world. Then we have our educational system which is decent when you get to the post highschool level, but in highschool and below the quality varies extremely from school to school because the regulations we have countrywide do not really (they do on paper, but in reality not that much) adress 'quality of education' and districts and provinces have a lot of independence from the country when deciding how to build their school infrastructure. The huge amount of land that the Netherlands uses to produce food is in part responsible for the lack of housing, the huge amount of nitrogen that is produced has put us at regulation limits. Since the building of houses also produces nitrogen there is little room left for us to keep building. But the Netherlands did export 104,7 Billion Euros worth of agriculture products in 2021. Still the biggest income for the Netherlands is income and salary tax. 22,48% of the total income that the Netherlands had in 2021 came from income taxes. This does not include the 12% of the countries income that we pay for Social healthcare on our income. So in essence 34,48% of the countries income comes from salary and income of the working individuals. It used to be worth it, but the prices keep going up in the netherlands and the quality of everything else is going down, despite the huge investments made in education and healthcare the quality has not gone up. In the best cases it stayed the same.

I think all our taxes are still worth it in the sense of, it would be alot worse if we didnt pay this much at this time. The world economy is very broken atm. logistical, manufacturing and raw materials all have their own big problems with a big impact on the world economy including ours. I think we could be alot worse off if our economy wasn't so robust. besides that i totally agree with everything else you said!

While I agree and understand your ideas and feelings, I'd say it is much worse in many countries including and especially my country, Turkey. We have over 200% yearly inflation, millions of refugees that work without registering and paying tax. Their health insurance is paid by Turkish taxpayers which is above 50 billion dollars as of last year. They are working cheap and without tax while Turkish youth losing jobs. On paper we have the health system for free but you'd wait months if not years for an operation as all the hospitals are overcrowded. It is same with the rents. My rent is quadrupled last year even though Istanbul is a huge construction zone. It is loud, dirty, expensive and depressing I believe the situation is somewhat similar for most of the underdeveloped or developing nations. Netherlands being more expensive is kind of a shield for this kind of problems. The Netherlands has perfect infrastructure, people living are one of the happiest in the world, education level is high, and the most importantly quality of life is probably top 5% in the whole damn world. I am not saying the Netherlands does not have problems but compared to the problems of people complaining here, you guys are living a perfect life. The life is hell for 80% of the population in the world and Netherlands citizens have much more positivies than negatives. Thanks for the write up though. We are moving to the Netherlands pretty soon and it helped me gain some more perspective.

Having got an MSc and PhD from Wageningen University, I think that greenhouse innovation is one of the most remarkable changes that took place in Dutch agriculture. Greenhouses used to require huge energy inputs for heating and lighting. Then, energy requirements started plummeting thanks to huge increases in efficiency. And now, greenhouses are on track to become energy producers. They harvest unneeded solar energy with solar panels and store heat for the winter. At the same time, they also give much higher yields for signature crops like tomatoes, as compared with countries warm enough to grow them outside in fields. This basically means that the Netherlands is now best at growing crops for which its climate isn't even naturally suited.

You're right except you forgot one small detail; everything grown in greenhouses tastes like shit compared to crops coming from real farmers. Try a supermarked tomato from a greenhouse, then travel to France and eat one that has actually seen sun and was fed by nature's soil. You'll for sure taste an enormous difference.

@@kolonelfranz31 I find several greenhouse crops quite palatable and importing, even from France, means that crops will have to be harvested not quite ripe, making them less tasty anyway. Also, food is grown more locally, meaning less transport and thus, fewer emissions. What I worry about more is a general trend that new crop varieties have fewer nutrients in them, while at the same time, fruit becomes sweeter and sweeter. I think that we need to rethink how we create our diet, because the food industry is making our food more unhealthy every year.

@diedertspijkerboer I was always under the impression that greenhouses need a lot of valuable gas to be warmed up during winter to grow crops throughout the whole year. Has this really improved you think? I still feel that eating things like cucumbers in winter is pretty bad for the environment

@@Bowonfire At the moment, greenhouse farmers use different methods of heating. The most advanced ones are using heat from deap in the earth. Basically, greenhouses are now in a transition period towards cleaner methods of heating. Of course, farmers also need lighting to grow the crops in winter, which also has an energy cost, and that's in transition as well, with huge windparks being built out at sea. So it's difficult to say how environmentally unfriendly it is to eat cucumbers in winter. But note that storage spaces for vegetables need to be heated as well, but less so. So the ideal thing to eat would be crops that can be harvested in winter, like kale, Brussels sprouts and turnips. However, I'm unsure if you can create a healthy diets if you limit yourself to such crops. Personally, I buy a fair amount of frozen vegetables and especially fruit. They are cheap and they don't spoil, which is a huge environmental benefit in itself. I'd be interested in what your approach is.

Im just entering the workforce after finishing my MBA. Even with a higher education, life is fucking hard and money is tight. We're taxed for every action except breathing, inflation is insane and wages have stagnated. My generation will never own more than a toothbrush and a pillowcase. I hate my government and if I had the money I'd move away and never look back.

Same here, not an MBA but 2 masters and I feel that I only don't get taxed for breathing (you used exactly my words), they overdo it, I'm not saying to not pay taxes but to that extent is impossible to live a normal life! I rather go somewhere with sea and nice weather at least so to be poor but with good life! Here I feel poor and not happy!

Thanks to Rutte. In his terms, overall taxes increased with 10%. In his coming term it will be increases with another 4% or so. A lot goes to the EU and ever increasing government. A lot of immigrants also who cost a lot. Stop pumping our gas reserves won’t help.. vote wise…

Actually, being from the Netherlands I have to say, at 1 in 13, the number of children growing up in poverty is alarmingly high for a rich country like the Netherlands. And due to inflation, the number of families with money problems is increasing even more. Yes there are opportunities and the government have installed multiple funds grants which citizens can use, but there is still a large amount of low class income families

Wish this video would reflect some more of the reality of the current state of the country. Inflation has gone through the roof and almost 1 million citizens don't know how to cope with the high prices of gas and groceries. No gas from Russia anymore. Dutch gas mining has been reduced because of environmental reasons. Lot of political instability and an immigrant/refugees problem.

The graph about re-exports represented all exports and not just the agricultural ones. In reality, not half, but one third of agricultural exports are re-exports, and about two thirds of the products are produced in the Netherlands. So we produce some more than the video mentioned. Perhaps surprisingly, the biggest type of agricultural export (based on value, not tonnes) is decorative agriculture, followed by meat and only then vegetables.

Agriculture is not just food and also is counted in value and not calories. If you truly want to know who feeds the world the amount of calories exported matters. Ukraine and Russia both export way more calories.

@@Deveonn that makes sense as potatoes and grain contain way more calories per dollar than meat or flowers (cuz u dont eat m). Also, the Netherlands are the leading exporter in tomatoes which arent really caloriebombs either. But I dont think either me or the video claimed that the Netherlands are feeding the world. We are just the worlds second largest agricultural exporter by value, which is heavily influenced by the type of products that are exported

@@carstengrooten3686 couldn’t agree more, however agriculture in value doesn’t make any sense for comparison. Even farm equipment is included the export. So yes the Netherlands has a big agriculture export but has little to less to do with size.

@@Deveonn it depends what you are interested in. If you are looking into how the exports or industry as a whole is important for a nation, looking at value makes a lot of sense. When looking at food security, tonnes and calories seem more fitting. But considering the exports of equipment, the Netherlands perhaps also play an indirect role in this although I have no idea to what extend

The divide between rich and poor is growing, while our middleclass is shrinking. Nothing rich here, but a few, mostly those with power.

Meanwhile the hardest working middleclass people pay around 50% taxes on just what they earn, not speaking about the huge amount of taxes upon taxes they have fabricated here. So, yes you can become rich, but it wont happen easily, they will make it hard for you so you say a debt slave, work for them rich 0% tax payers, Netherlands might aswell invented the debt trap...

I live there and it is these days a messed up place to live

I have one year since I moved to The Netherlands to work here and all I have to say it's that I love it from the bottom of my heart and in some time I want to make citizenship here and install here once and for all. It's amazingly structured, amazing helpful people, they are always happy, they greet you on the street, they are very open-minded, dutch people are also working-minded and what I mean by that is they are not shamed with their job, or never complain about their job, they do their job very well and like I said, I love The Netherlands from the bottom of my heart and it will stay that way until I die. Now all I have to do is to learn the language. I know a little bit of words but I'm not rushing anything, the process is what I want to enjoy the most.

The part where you explain that a lot of healthy people left the workforce made me crack up. At school, they told me about retirement age, and when I came home I began telling what I had learned that day. My two grandfathers would just stare blankly at me and tell me: Yeah, we didn't work until that age, we just went to a doctor, and we could retire early. When I asked why, they didn't know: "I don't know, everybody did it". I still think about those 2 old men all the time, their biggest problems were keeping the garden and lawn tidy and not forget to buy cigarettes.

Most interesting is the very broad freedom to start and run businesses of whatever kind, without needing any diplomas, papers etc. If you want to be an entrepreneur and trade in something... you just do it. I've been an entrepreneur now for over 15 years in my country; done this, done that and up to some other things again. Love it.

Dutch middle class profits very little from their economy. Taxes and cost of living are exceptionally high. One of the reasons I left.

But only the people who actually wrote a letter of complaint to the tax company got money back. So Dutch government steals from their inhabitants so their wealth became immensely high. So for your understanding they didn't compensate the people who didn't write a letter of complaint. So you believe the government and therefore you're being punishment.

The high number of unemployment had a completely different reason: The Netherlands stopped subsidizing it's industries, which led to the closing of a lot of factories, as they could not compete with low wage countries like Japan and South Korea (at the time low wage... ) Also the government spending was well balanced before 1977. The real growth of the deficit started then, at van Agt's first term. He started lending from banks and people, where up to that point, we covered all expenses with taxes. Sure, business and rich people loved having to pay less taxes, but everything still had to be paid from somewhere.

The town of Aalsmeer, not far from Schiphol airport, hosts a flower auction on which flowers from all around the world are traded, flown in and exported again. Developing a high turnover does not mean a high profit. The net disposable income of the Netherlands within Europe was still in 5th place in 2017, in 2021 it has dropped to 14th place.

@@halljeowldnnxn I'm not Dutch either, I came here 7 years ago for studies and now I have my own business, but I check sometimes in the job market and I see that for international positions the competition is huge. To me the problem I think is that there are many people who, because cannot get a high salary, can have all the social benefits (social housing, subsidies etc.) I see, for example, many people from Turkey or Marokko who have like 4-5 children each, live in a social house and only the man of the house works. Considering that the rest of us who make a better profit pay for closing the gap of those people, it feels like it doesn't even worth to make above 25k. I think the situation is getting worse with the inflatie as well. With covid too, now with the war in Ukraine and the high gas prices...is a combination of all...

Yeah, you never read the actual articles didn't you? It's the livestock market that needs to shrink since there's no room for millions of cattle that'll largely end up being exported. Those farmers will eventually thin out and hopefully convert to crops.

The main focus might be livestock but also lots of crop farmers are being bought out. The articles in most newspapers are not always completely true, from both sides i have to admit. But to say that only the livestock is being bought out is just not true.

@@wouterdekroon8539 again, false and incomplete information. The buyout scheme hasn't been installed yet, so no farmers are being bought out. It will start 2023. The 'nitrogen regulation' is solely/primarily targeted towards the livestock farmers since they account for over 40% of all output in the Netherlands. Within this group the main targets are those who have a farm near a 'Natura2000' area, especially the cattle- or pigfarms. There's an option for buyout but the focus is on refocus towards field cultivation. The remaining 'crop farmers' are urged to move towards more environmental agriculture, of course heavily subsidized. All farmers know this, and have known for decades. It's the agricultural corporations (animal food producers) that are in danger of making less profit and that's why the farmers have been mobilized to riot.

Although the official buyout might start in 2023, some companies have already been invited for individual talks regarding the price they should sell. So the one giving incomplete information right now might be you. Or governments and municipalities are acting on their own in the south. The fact about the natura200 areas is true but its quiet a lot to explain and therefore I left it out. However you took my comment completely out of context while i just said that there are also farms only focussed on vegetables and crops that are being targetted. I did not say that it was just as many as livestock, because it is way less but still it is happening.

The gasfield is in Slochteren, in the northern province of Groningen. Not in the North Sea. There are some more tiny gas pockets in the Wadden Sea, but they're currently not being exploited due to the fragile ecology.

Spending your money at the wrong things.

The Netherlands is going down,abnormal house prices abnormal energie prices abnormal gas prices abnormal food prices. Asylum seekers are helped better financially support and getting helped with getting an house. This al can be reduced by adjusting the tax fee.

It is true the Netherlands is a wealthy and financially stable country, as well as relatively peaceful, and I am grateful being a Dutch civilian. Yet there are some setbacks. For instance the dense population, which causes a serious shortage of housing and high rent prices. There are quite a lot of homeless people in the Netherlands, that are not psychiatric patients or drug patients but normal working class people who simply can't find a house and are driven into poverty and sometimes suicide. The very intense agricultural production does also pose long-term environmental challenges (like eutrophication of eco-systems). Moreover, the Dutch are famous for their extreme bureaucracy, which can get average citizens into serious trouble. De 'toeslagenaffaire' is famous for this. And Dutch society as a whole is getting less liberal. Citizens seem to be getting more harsh and less tolerant towards one another.

You should have mentioned Indonesia, where most of the profit came from between 1600 / 1957 as a Dutch colony. But overall, good video ✅

Meanwhile in the Netherlands our government is pushing hard to destroy farming/agriculture with a new nitrogen policy which will cause ALOT of farmers to go bankrupt.

das onzin. De VS doet niets zonder zelfbelang. Fek, GB was rijk voor WO2 and al die centjes gingen naar de VS. GB was bankroet na wo2. De VS geeft geen hulp. Nu niet, dan niet en nooit niet. Het was ook de VS dat de opstanden tegen de koloniën catalyseerde, om ze vervolgens over the nemen op een voor die mensen minder gunstige wijze. Ooit gehoord van petro dollar ook? @@NextGenAge That's bullshit - I'm not a Dutch resident nor do I have any bias to confirm/deny this statement, but I had a look how they calculate this and it's based on education level, economic stability, career opportunities etc. - At no point did they actually survey people to see if they are happy or not. I think they Dutch are relatively happy bunch but nowhere near Spain or Mexico, and also they have a relatively high suicide rate

Taxhaven not so much, maybe for foreign capital, but definetly not for its citizens. 50% income tax if you make more than 68k per year, I think that is absolutely ridiculous. Also 25% coorperate taxes, one of the highest in Europe.

That is generaly what is implied when refering to a 'tax haven', an interesting place for huge companies and conglomerations to place their main office to evade paying taxes. The Netherlands is definitely a big one in Europe, as are Ireland & England.

As a dutch person: we were rich indeed. But not anymore... Our "leaders" work really hard to destroy everything we build. Its just a matter of time before everything collapse. 2030, here we come.

Well, as a Dutch citizen, the Netherlands as a country might be rich, the people most certainly are not. Yes, we a low unemployment rate, the salaries are average or a bit more, but the tax-rates are incredibly high. Joe Average is getting poorer by the day, while the elite, multinationals and all those in favour of our government are getting richer and richer. At this very moment farmers have to reduce by 50% due too European standards for the exposure of nitrogen-emmissions, our government blames the farmers for that solely, and farmers nationwide are protesting for a few months on row. Our inflation is more than 20%, prices of fuel, energy, food, and more increased significantly due too the war in Ukraine, droughts, and what ever they can make up. And talking about Ukraine, our country is flooded by refugees from the Ukraine, while about 60% of that country and neighbouring countries are considerd safe. But hey, okay we can help those in need due to the war, no problem. But our government stimulates the acceptance of refugees, not just from the Ukraine, but also from Africa, in order to have a positive population growth, in hope it will keep our retirementfunds and health care system affordable, but the result is our country suffers from overpopulation, our healtcare system is collapsing, and our retirement funds, paid by all working citizens, exported to the south of Europe as a loan to help them sort out their financial difficulties. Those loans will never be paid back, and altough I should be able to retire when I am 67 (was 65, in Greece and Italy you can retire with 62) I will never get anything from the retirementfunds at all. The money I paid al those years will be evaporated by then. Not to mention criminality. Due to cuts in policeforce, a burglar gets away with theft almost every time, druglords rule the country, and our country is becoming more and more of a gangsters paradise. So, the Netherlands a rich country? Well, not that much. We encounter the same problems as everone else in Europe or the States. 30-40 years ago our country was a good country to live in. But due to choices made by politicians during the last 30 years, our country is bring ruled by the elite, CEO's and captain's of industry.

So true and well spoken !! I'm sorry to say it but I did emigrate from my beloved nation because of all the reasons you just mentioned. The one thing you maybe forgot to mention is that it is impossible to find a payable house in the Netherlands, and in average you have to wait like +/- 6 to 8 years before you can get a house anyway. The Netherlands are becoming worse and worse to live in year by year. Almost everyone in the Netherlands will agree on that, but meanwhile they keep on voting for the same guy/moron every election ?!?!

@Bjorn Hiep People in Netherlands are rich, healthcare is way better than US, wealth distribution also a lot better, the dutch are the happiest among the world, rich culture and history, with global warming continuing most below central france becomes a desert in the next 100 years. Plenty of farmland and water around, tons of natural gas even among top world reserves actually. The debt that most students make with the new loan system is only minor compared to what other universities around the world ask. Their whole study is just one year studying in US. All healthcare is paid if you get in serious accident, those who cannot afford get extra money monthly from government to get healthcare, basically for free if you earn too little. Education is also very good at universities, many german and international students come to Universities like Amsterdam, Maastricht, Eindhoven for their fully english programs. To really understand what dutch have you need to look at the poorer countries like balkans, asia, even south of Europe doing much worse. We always complain about not being able to own a house, but at same time the dutch go live on their own at youngest age of EU and every person in NL occupies the largest living space per person counting average now of 65m2 per person, whereas Germany is at 46m2 and UK at 44m2.

@@swissbiggy The simple solution for the housing problem is closing the borders and sending back any unwanted guests (International students, refugees, immigrants). Building more and more houses only destroys the nature and farmlands and it does not help when thousands of people still get in the country (these people are also a priority, meaning they get a house before an actual Dutch citizen). If you keep letting people in, you can keep building houses, it does not stop. Its what they want by 2030, the Netherlands should become a mega city. Also I think that anyone who has lived for over 18 years (everyone who has been born and raised in the Netherlands) in the Netherlands should always get more chance to get a house than for example someone who has only lived for 7 years in the Netherlands. Also im pretty sure elections are rigged in the Netherlands, it's common sense. Pretty much everyone from the left (even though our current government is extremely left winged) and right do not like the current prime minister and his political allies. The fact that he got elected again is not a surprise actually, since the most important Dutch politicians are affiliated with the world economic forum (wealthy left wing elite) which seeks to complete their left wing agendas worldwide by 2030. This obviously won't happen if a right wing populist is controlling the country. And even if we get another prime minister, it would probably be a left winged woman even though the Netherlands is a very right winged country, as I meant before. Especially in these times the right wing community is growing larger (worldwide).
