Why is the Bottom of My Kettle Black?! - How to avoid soot on your kettle

One of the problems you may run into when using a turkey fryer to boil your beer is an accumulation of black soot on the bottom of your kettle. Many people have recommendations on cleaning the soot off your kettle, but that doesn't address the problem.
How do you make your burner clean-burning so the soot doesn't accumulate? This tip should help a bunch.

Good tips brother. Keep 'me rolling. I've just bought a banjo style burner so this was perfect timing to help me dial in the mix. Cheers!

I have 2 of the banjo's and you are right, they carry a pretty clean flame. The ole turkey burner was tough to clean up. Nice tip. Cheers!

I'm glad it helped. I had a friend with a burner that was crazy with how much soot he had to clean every time he brewed.

If you're using an LPG ring or cooker, it could be that the gas / air mix is incorrect, and this causes sooting by way of yellow flames and / or yellow tipped blue flames. If this is the case, it might be worth checking the adjustment of the gas air mixture shutter / collar / screw and twisting this until you get a totally blue flame. This usually solves the problems. LPG butane and propane gas needs significantly more air to burn cleanly.

Thank you! I was just ignoring it since I brew outside. Seems like it probably wastes a little fuel as well if it's not all burning..

Probably some waste, and it’s an easy fix if you can adjust the air mix. But some burners don’t have the option.

I've found a bunch of thick carbonized junk in my burners, which was causing soot-up on my kettle. I'm not sure if it was the result of several boilovers, or something left over from the casting process. Broke it up with a coat hanger wire, cleaned them out, and they're burning clean again. One was a banjo burner, the other was a jet burner.

I usually had the garage doors open when I brewed. But since this was just a few minutes, i didn't. Several guys i knew in Wisconsin did the same thing. Also know guys with full propane setups inside their house, but that's a whole other level of ventilation required.
