5000 years after the introduction of agriculture? There were cities older than agriculture itself. In fact, the existence of religious sites, with populations that would've made them metropolis back then, was probably what triggered the discovery of agriculture as a relliable means of food production.

  • @hedgehog3180

@@josecipriano3048 You're talking about Gobekli Tepe and no that was not a city. There's no evidence to suggest it was permanently inhabited for long periods, we haven't found any fireplaces, refuse piles, pottery and the other markers of permanent habitation. Gobekly Tepe and places like it were religious sites, temples, while a small group of priests might have lived there most other people only gathered for special religious events at certain times of the year. Also it's probably a safe bet that Gobekli Tepe indicates that agriculture is older than we thought, these kinds of dates keep getting pushed back and it's highly likely it will happen again because the Middle East still is massively underinvestigated by archeology. I don't think there's a clear consensus on when cities first started appearing (partly because it's difficult to define what a city exactly is), age claims range from 10000 BCE to 6000 BCE but I think Jericho has a pretty solid claim to the title of oldest city in the world given that it has had walls since at least the 6000 BCE. Basically it took anywhere from a thousand to five thousand years after the introduction of agriculture before cities started to appear. This is also part of a wider debate about how societies developed and how the first organized states appeared, which I don't think there is any consensus on yet. Your opinion that cities appeared almost immediatly after agriculture is one that some scholars share while others believe that it took much longer before the trade networks and social structures that enabled cities to appear developed. There's also a general idea that cities can't appear without hierarchical social structures, and that those need luxury goods that aren't perishable.

Telekinesis spells capable of halting that kind of kinetic energy requires disproportionally high-class mages. And it's far easier to build cannons than it is to train new mages. And the technology might not be reliable _yet_ , but it will be eventually. The one law that is even more universal than human stupidity, is the arms race between all things living.

Michael VPS but when is it going to be reliable? Magic is reliable now. A cannon can beat an average mage in an arms race anytime. But a good mage can level entire countries alone. Raise the dead. Grow the crops. Tame the beasts. Master the elements. Mold time and reality itself. A cannon is still a cannon. High or low tech, a counter cannon or anti cannon can match it. So theres no race for that sort of weapon when the race for magic can compete with them all the time. If cannons were good in any way. They would have shown themselves to be worth investing time into it. Even scientists dont rely on technology alone. In a world were a single anomaly can take on the world, having war tech risks the wrath of them fallin onto you to ensure you dont out tech the magic. Its a liability to be too advanced.

The technology IS advancing, but in a different way from what we have on Earth. For example the late aldmeri Elven Armor from Skyrim borrows ideas from XXI century, not the Middle Ages. The lore suggests it’s made of specially treated moonstone which is really tricky to work with. That makes it functionally similar to our ceramic armor. That armor would be extremely resistive on first several hits deflecting any sort of impact and then the armor would just break and shatter. Not suited for an adventurous hero. But certainly a perfect thing for a huge army.

Mass production is invented to satiate a demand. If there is no demand, mass production will not come about. There is no market for cannons because mages can produce powerful blasts that are similar enough, and since they know mages work, they will "mass produce" mages by training troops in the art. As far as they are concerned, why create a big metal tube that requires gun powder and ammunition that is additionally very heavy and fairly diffucult to move (especially in a mountanous area like skyrim) when a battle mage literally just needs to be healthy and well trained? If they have little percieved use for a cannon, thry have especially no reason to find a way to mass produce the weapons.

Very interesting, and you're not entirely wrong, but you forget something. The Elder Scroll used on Alduin warped and tore time. The technology in Oblivion and Morrowind weren't just in another place, but another time. Something I noticed is that the swords from the 2 former games resemble swords during the 12th to 14th or 15th century, but the swords in Skyrim look more like earlier technology like the swords in the late Viking age, about 8th to 9th century.

Magic makes a lot of technology useless, and therefore it's never invented, but also even though time itself is progressing forward, the past is leaking through, or leaked through, somehow.

  • @abyssstrider2547

David Well, Skyrim is inspired by Scandinavia from 8th century after all. Although if the TES 6 was kinda like daggerfall where you had both High Rock and Hammerfell it would be cool if High Rock was based on French/British culture around 15th century. And as for the Hammerfell. Them seem to be based on Moors from North West Africa. The ones who conoquered Spanish. For them, I think they would be cool to be around 13th century, that was a sweet spot for them. In game they also have a bit of a pirate and steampunk culture in them since they use airships to get around and have cannons, muskets too. Which is acceptable. Morrocans were a part of Muslim world and had access to many technologies Christians lacked. For example Ottomans introduced guns to Europe. They also sieged Constantinople with cannons.

  • @OokamiKageGinGetsu

    @OokamiKageGinGetsu

    6 жыл бұрын

Yes, but I think you entirely missed my entire point. I get it's based on Viking Age Norse culture, but that's kind of my point. My point is that the style of swords in Skyrim, ignoring that they have a more fantastical design (just the iron, silver, and steel; I'm not using Orcish, Dwarvish, Elvish, Glass, Ebony, or Daedric (which I believe should be pronounced Dædric) since they are both founded too much in fantasy to use as a comparison and since they may be outside the sphere of the purpose of this comparison), appear closer in design to swords from the Viking Age. The Morrowind Iron sword looks more like 10th - 12th century, and the Oblivion Iron sword looks like about 10th - 14th century. The Morrowind Silver sword looks like the 13th century sword of St. Ferdinand, the Oblivion Silver sword looks about 14th - 15th century. The Morrowind Steel sword resembles a 13th century sword, and the Oblivion Steel sword more resembles a 15th century sword. The Skyrim Iron sword looks about 10th century, the Silver sword about 12th century, and the Steel sword looks about 10th - 12th century. The swords of Skyrim definitely look like earlier swords, late Viking Age to early Medieval. I understand that it's supposed to look like late Viking Age, but that's exactly the point. Look at swords from 15th century Norse countries, compare them to contemporary swords of other lands at the same time and to swords of those same Norse lands during the late Viking age to early Medieval period. As for the "scimitar," different kinds of "scimitar" were used as early as the 11th century to as late as the 19th century. Although, the sword presented in Skyrim looks more like the Indian tulwar or Persian shamshir. (Actually, it looks more like all three combined.) The Moroccans used a nimcha, which has a wider blade than a scimitar (the Skyrim version is a little exaggerated) but is less curved. The katana, or Blades sword, was in use beginning in about the 13th or 14th century to the late 19th century, but the tachi, from which the katan is derived, was in use as early as the 9th - 10th century. So, the Eastern style swords can't really be used as good markers of the time period. As for the idea that the Muslim world was more technologically advanced than the Christian world, this is s misconception that has been disproven. The "Islamic Golden Age" was due to a caliph, Harun al-Rashid, who decided *not* to destroy the libraries of Christian lands he had conquered, as opposed to earlier caliphs, but instead commanded everyone living in the conquered lands under Muslim rule to translate written texts from all over the world into Arabic. It's not that they were more technologically advanced, it's that they conquered many lands, including Christian, and collected the knowledge of those lands.

For sure, but producing advanced weaponry would yield the same results, with an additional catch - the Imperials would've run out of ammunition quite quickly. Moreover, using steel bullets, bolts etc. would not avail against any enemy with superior armour(ie. dwarven, glass, orcish) which means that you would need to produce bullets out of that very same metal, causing prices to skyrocket and logistics to become exceedingly painful.

Ive always thought the whole why isnt technology advancing thing is kinda silly. All you have to do is look at our own history to realize that technology untill very recently has progressed at a snails pace. I mean the horse was the cutting edge in land transportation for what like 5000 years. Weve only had real guns for like 600 years, up untill that point it was just edged and blunt weapons essentially. These question come because of the way we apply speed at which technology progresses in our modern world to the past which was nowhere nearly as fast for a variety of reasons.

Th3 H3rald the reason is a plot hole, the elder scrolls is a fantasy game that resolves around a pre gun powder era. If things get too advanced the game starts to feel different and the classic sword and board, crossbow, bow and magic combat that most people recognize with the series begins to fade making it a different game. If you remove the core elements of the series you basically change the series and make it something completely different. Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts for example would have probably gotten a better rating had it not been given the title of a series that already had its gameplay mechanics set in stone and and the audience is very familiar with the core mechanics and know what to expect. Nuts and bolts did not feel like a banjo game because the only thing it had in common was the name. This is why we don’t see M16s in the hobbit or other fantasy worlds, simply because it’s not set in the modern world and neither is it meant to, it is its own world with its own style.

Counter their Sabotage and Subterfuge except magitech. Is far better then just magic and just tech. Have a smith and a mage work together and they can create some great things. Have a doctor learn the specifics of flesh amd healing can be greatly increased. Magic alone is not a excuse especially in skyrims case as they do not like magic. So they should put more stock in seige weaponry and weaponry in general. If anything the reason i think tech is so slow is due to the lack of necessity. They dont need faster travel so noone looks into engines. They dont need better weaponry since they get by with what they have. They dont even have that much war and i mean Long wars. And most of their times of great strife are caused by magical means so just tech is not enough amd even then its quite short. Not to mention the great retcons they suffered due to magic. With the fall of the empire and the massive push from the Dominion this may actually be what causes a renaissance for magic and tech alike. No matter how powerful a mage good armor can get your units in amd since most mages fight un armored a good sword or spear will fell them quickly. Wards are only good for magic not cannons. blackpowder weaponry would be a mage killer, enchanted blackpowder weaponry would be even deadlier. A mix of magic powered tech would greatly increase a seige weapons capabilities and so on. Its just a natural progression with magic being legitimately widespead in the setting. They been in the darkages long enough and the cause was the Continent wide empires unity.

Its actually funny how largely inconsistent the elder scrolls world is regarding magic, for instance: The player is able to take nearly fatal damage, drink a health potion or spell, and be completely healed. yet you go to say a imperial or stormcloak camp and see more than a few wounded bleeding soldiers incapacitated by their wounds. Why does healing not effect them? There’s even random potions for things near them. In a world where magic exists there’s still somehow need for natural healing. This is obviously neglect for consistency or perhaps trying to make the environment more realistic by having wounded soldiers everywhere. But even so the world sets itself up to sometimes raise the need for technology in that one example so why COULDNT they advance if not for hospitals and such. Another example is people in the Devine temples “praying to be cured” when there’s a perfectly good altar to stare at or “cure disease potion” to drink.

Everything is made convenient for the player's enjoyment. Don't forget that an hour ingame only takes 20 realtime minutes, so don't worry about mechanics too much, that's what mods are for anyway.

Because is better for the player. It's a videogame not a Nobel or a TV series. So logic is not that important. This also happens in terms of lore, for example, Tamriel is a really big continent, but the problem is that in the game there are medieval cities bigger than the whole provinces. And the cities of Skyrim, even Oblivion, are so small. For example, the imperial city, as the player we see that city as a really big and fantastic city, don't we? Well, most of the towns are bigger than that, and if we want to be accurate with the reality, comparing it with other cities of that importance in the real world is much worse. Ancient Rome, the most similar city, had 1 million inhabitants, imperial city only 80 or something like that, and is overpopulated because most of the people have no home. Another example are god's, we see daedric princes as something really powerful, but when you became Sheogorath in Oblivion the powers are not that impressive. Why? Because if you had the power of a god the game would be just soo boring, and if you had to travel the equivalent of Madrid to Paris every time you want to get a new city it would be horrible and boring, for the player and for the videogame makers.

@@adge5182 wow this was over a year ago I made this comment. However. The videos topic is about why does technology not advance in Skyrim, the verdict obviously, is magic, and technology is not important because it can do everything that science can do, but, if they cannot just heal on the spot with magic or do everything that the player can do, then ideally they do need to advance because magic doesn't work like it does for the player. Obviously the differences are made for the convenience of the player, but you'll have enemies heal in combat like the player, but then later come across an old fellow who's injured and needs 50 different ingredients for a miracle cure. It's just funny to me, not to be taken seriously, just fun to point out.

I have pondered this after getting fully in depth into the lore’s history. Thank you for your insight on this. The airship is indeed tricky. Because I would assume that with the power of flight you could do more with it than just military gains. If they could reverse engineer one of those successfully, they could make transportation of goods and people much more faster than ever. Granted, they would be skipping the idea of any kind of automotive power or something like that, but it’d be from that flying mechanism that product like fruits and meats could reach destinations much more quickly than caravans or sea ships and could last longer. High dignitaries from High Rock wouldn’t have to wait days on end to travel to the Imperial City for a meeting. Just an idea.

A reason why there COULD be guns, more advanced machines or even just scientific progress: Why should there be none? Tldr: Technology and scientific knowledge will find a way if there is at least one person with too much boredom and/or money. A mage could think "why do I have to pay some dude to chop my wood for the fire? Could I save costs by automating the process and make that guy be done with the work faster, so I have my silence sooner?" So he thinks about a solution that doesn´t expend his mana too much and/or will work while he is on travels. He puts water for a tea onto the fire and notices that the steam can push the lid up. So steam can push heavier things up. He experiments a little and (re)invents the steam engine. A young, slightly mad noble man without the ability to cast magic could dream about flying. He studies the anatomy of birds he hunts and comes to the conclusion that land based animals of the same size are heavier and have no wings. So he thinks up a construction made of light, but stable wood and paper or light leather. He maybe builds a prototype to see if his theories are true. He has many fails, but at some point, the ever different failing models fail less and less. Until one glides down the tower he throws them out of and lands perfectly intact a hundred times. He then proceeds to build a larger model and jumps from dive rock with it, landing perfectly unharmed. Afterwards, he sits on a bench and thinks of how he could improve his glider so that it stays in the air. He looks in the landscape and sees a windmill. He builds a model of it and instead of letting the wind turn the mill, he tries what happens when he turns the mill the other way. It´s a hot day and so, he notices that there is cool air when he stands in front of his construction, which also blows a paper from his desk. He now, asks himself what would happen if the mill turned faster. Eventually, he figures out that the mill gets pushed a little bit, too. So he searches a way to combine the glider and the mill. He hears about an invention from the mage, which automated the process of chopping wood. He gets in contact with that mage and offers him a large amount of money for one of the machines, improved for speed and lightweight.... He experiments some more... and turns his glider into the first ever plane... And as we have magic, nothing really prevents magitech. The mage could power the steam engine with a (few) ever-burning torches. The airship could be reinvented by making a boat fly with levitation or telekinesis magic (like that meteorite that was about to hit the city of Vivec). Propulsion could be anything from magic-steam powered propellers to even a firejet enchantment, actually. And there would be a use for skyships: Bringing goods/passengers safely and quickly from one end of Tamriel to the other. If portals or teleport relays could reliable/available/powerfully enough do that, there would be no need for ships. But there still are ships, so teleport options are not reliable/available/powerful enough. While I can´t remember any teleports in Skyrim, there were teleport options in both, Oblivion and Morrowind. In both were regular ships. Some dude could even stumble into Apocrypha / make some deal with Hermaeus Mora and gain knowledge that the dwemers posessed about making those machines. A scholar could sit in his garden under his favorite apple tree and read a book. Suddenly, he feels a pain on his skull and thinks "why did that apple fall onto me?" and develops a theory of gravity. In the real world, that guy was a Sir Isaac Newton A monk could be bored and try to figure out what happens if you cross white roses with red roses. How many offspring roses will be red, how many white and how many will be pink? Is this principle portable to other flowers? To animals? To men, mer, Argonians and Kajiit? What are the properties of a mix of redguard and breton? Real life equivalent: The augustinian priest Gregor Mendel. For many of our real world technologies, there was no inherent NEED to make them better. The ams-race excepted, maybe, as armors were made better in response of weapons that were improved as response on armors being improved and so on... But there was no real need to improve the plough. There was no real need to make larger carts. There was no real need for the steam engine. There was no real need for the discovery of electricity and the lightbulb. We could use hand-ploughs to work the fields. We could use smaller carts or carry everything ourselves. We could have lived without the railway. We could have lived without the electrical light. But we did it anyway. Yes, on Tamriel, they could conjure Daedra to work the fields or bring stuff from Solitude to Corinthe (yes, I googled some Tamriel map and chose a random place). But that could just as well horribly back-fire, if everyone knew how to do that. Yes, on Tamriel, they could use magic to levitate the bundles of crop to their destination. But how many mages stoop so low to do that? Yes, magical, ever-burning torches and candles seem to exist, but if everyone has them, they are not special enough to show off with on the next party or fair. An advantage of using technology or maybe even magitech over pure magic would be that it would not necessarily involve a guy casting a spell with his mana or effectively (part of) the life of a creature (in the case of a soulgem) for every single time a specific effect is desired. If you managed to read or maybe even follow until here: ... YOU do have far too much time. Go ahead and invent something cool ;)

I know it's from 3 years ago but about the first case a mages use conjurations for that kind of thing without paying anyone in TES OBLIVION we can see a Dremora delivering a letter or various types of lesser Daedra guarding a wizard's tower, mana cost isn't that much of an issue outside of battle and conjurations can last indefinitely so using magic is cheaper about the second case intelligence = Magic if he is so smart to do something like that he should be able to use levitation magitech actually already exists just not in the way you think Shalidor's mazes and many more Nordic constructions are inherently magitech in nature I seem to have read on reddit that the puzzle door in the ruins is actually comparable to the seal door in a nuclear bunker mages study that kind of thing but that doesn't change Magic > technology Aicantar calcelmo' nephew rearmed and modified a Dwaven spider but of course when we have conjurations it's not that revolutionary and it didn't attract attention my answer is similar to the rest of examples

I think you have a really good point, but on the other hand, I think you undermine the fact that Nirn is a completely different "place" with its own "rules" and that gods and magic are something that factually exist and are given since the dawn of time and will always be. That being said, the very concept of someone developing technology and having enough curiosity or ingenuity is something that happened in our world, which for better or worse doesnt have any kind of given or fixed rules, at least to our certain knowledge. With this I mean our inventors and creative geniuses have had the need or the curiosity to develop technologies that were needed or were imagined. People in Tamriel live with the fact that there are many given and unchangeable facts about the world that dont require any conscious or reasonable inputs other than to learn it and become proficient at its knowledge (in short, magic). So the problem lies mostly in the fact that people in Tamriel never even get the chance to feel a curiosity strong enough to actually develop something that replaces what its actually proven and working (technology over magic). The disappearance of the Dwemer sets a bad precedent for the rest of the world in the fact that their dabbling of technology and defiance of the rules of the world led to their extinction. This is such a cool topic to discuss and I really, really hope they tackle technology more in their (hopefully) upcoming game. I wish them to focus the story of the game more on the Dwemer, or even make it so the people of Tamriel develop electricity and we have further world changes to make it even more interesting.

On the use of Catapults instead of cannons: The issue with cannons is that you need to make them ins specialized workshops and then transport them to wherever you intend to use them, something similar applies to ammunition (at least the gunpowder, the projectiles usually can be more easily produced locally). Any type of torsion, tension or counterweight based throwing machine can usually be built wherever you are. Only a small number of small (usually metal) parts are often premade and shipped to the intended location, whereas most of the structure is quickly built locally, from local wood. So it certainly has logistical advantages. Also I think cannon have been retconned out or are just a case of unreliable narrator/depiction. You'd think the Dwemer would prefer guns over crossbows, yet they seemingly don't.

It's not because things seem logical and normal to us that it actually means anything. And yes, they have magic, which changes pretty much anything...

Sam Duncan Actually in the real world it could have happened quite earlier. China presumably started developing mass production techniques during the late XIII century ; there were signs of use of mined coal, and they supposedly weren't that far away from a real industrial revolution ; this show that while delays easily happen, breakthroughs do too. However, considering how stable the empires are in Tamriel (some dynasties lasted quite sometime), the huge timescale and all, the only things that I believe can really prevent it to happen would be the demographics (I know recent games' demographics aren't really cannon but still) and magic. That and plot armour for medieval weaponry.

Hey great video! I wanted to drop a few things down here just for thoughts and for fun. Just wanted to enter the discussion on a couple key points. First up was based on the question you had quoted as to why we don't see tech advancement in elder scrolls. You did in a broad sense nail it by stating "magic." I'd agree, however to elaborate a little I'd say take quick look at our own human history. How long did we use stone weapons, how long did we use all the weapons before firearms lol. Thousands of years. How long was the 1st to 4th Era? Geez in that time Dwemer already ran up and down the tech chain quickly with freakin robots lol. I agree with alchemy(primitive chemistry) and spells for healing. Let's discuss what I feel you also got correct was the usage of mages...and masters for that matter. Defining tech you can also say is driven by the need for better, more efficient, ease of use, more authentically pleasing. I would imagine becoming a mage and therefore becoming a master would be difficult and time consuming. So therefore some technologies would fill that gap as you explained. But more than likely as populations increase the potential for magic use to be "too" hard to learn may increase therefore opening the way for some technologies. An example of this could be seen with the bow and crossbow evolution. Training someone to use a bow took alot of time, training and required strength. Whereas the development of the crossbow made it quite easy to put into the hands of anyone with simple training and creating a force multiplier and increasing overall combat effectiveness. The crossbow changed sooo many things in combat in our world. You also mentioned airships! Besides that just being soooo advanced in our physics terms lol...let's say the dwemer used some alternative buoyant technology...look at the metallurgy and advanced metal techniques that would be necessary to start creating them even with reverse engineering...uh no. You are right again on that lol. Cannons are interesting..in the fact that..generally speaking the evolution of the modern firearm came from cannons of some type. But more importantly..how come this tech isn't pushed further? If there is engineers to build these amazing structures in Tamirel..there must be engineer types that aren't completely invested into magic to the point where that's all they study. Because, developing a hand carried firearm would be devastating to any and all peoples of NIRN. A battlements being able to stop a small projectile coming from hundreds of meters away? All the while being able to kill him or her instantly. Pretty effective and definitely worth looking into. Just wanted to throw a few things out, see if anyone bites, cuz I'd like to continue this small sidebar talk. Love the videos!

I also like to think it’s just impossible for them to advance how we did, as their planet and physics and science is completely different. Remember their stars aren’t even suns, they’re part of a god or whatever. So concepts of using electric for power just couldn’t work. And in our world there’s a apparently infinite universes with infinite possibilities so it’s possible a universe like where Nirn is exist lol.

This doesn't make sense because it would be much cheaper and efficient to mass produce cannons that any old chump could use than train battle mages extensively just for them to die in battle. This concept occurred in our history when warrior classes (i.e. knights and samurai) were replaced by poorly trained conscript armies. Tamerial doesn't advance because TES games are a part of the fantasy genre and that would change if the world progressed.

i like the vid, but the question isnt super hard: the Elder Scrolls universe is based on Tolkien-like high fantasy which uses the "magic-is-science" trope and combines that with a bronze age/ medieval setting. if TES universe had guns or electric devices it wouldn't fit the setting. of course there are the dwemmer who were more technologically advanced, but they fit the setting because their machinces run off of steam and are very primitive so it fits the setting

It was a theory of mine that the Gods doesnt allow Man and Mer to advance in technology. First the Dwemer, second despite the thousand of years Man and Mer hasnt advanced in technology passed the stone age. While magic is being more understood and advancing, not so much as technology. This could be a fact that each race doesnt need create something that doesnt rely on magic. Perhaps because of the wars against Man, Mer, and Daedra their civilizations keep being pushed back a bit. While its possible that the Aedra doesnt want anyone to advance in technology, that doesnt mean they are stopping anyone to do so. The Dwemer was punished by the gods for enslaving the Falmer and changing their appearance/sight. The Alyieds wanted to be more than just Mer, plus they enslaved Man(Not that caught up on Alyied lore though) so their civilization disappeared. Its also a fact that in the 9th era, there is space travel and technology passed anyones imagination. Keep in mind though that this isnt cannon since that writer who came up with that idea stopped writing for the elder scrolls after Oblivion or something. Its also my theory and in a way making Fallout and The Elder Scrolls into the same universe. The Man of Fallout is a "controlled" species put on Planet Earth and therefor the Aedra nor the Daedra is not allowed to touch humanity there. its stupid though and obviously not a thing

Alchemy and magic do replace lot of things but when it comes to transportation, and physical weapons even civilizations of Tameriel could benefit from those advancements. A bullet from a gun could easily pass through a ward better than a bow and horses only go so fast while air ships don't need to use roads.

What about muskets? Yes you have magic but not everyone can use it, but they can hold something and pull the trigger, and with the ingredients they have for alchemy surely they can use something similar to gun powder. It would be more effective than a bow. And easier to give simple training to even the simplest of men

Much like the Dwemer and Nords, the Redguards frown upon magic of most schools, and just like magic might seem easier to implement, it has also acquired a bad reputation among the people of Tamriel, seeing also that the training required to use it lasts years; technology in the elder scrolls is not frozen in time, but instead slowed down, just like we didn't go from hunting and gathering to having the industrialized society we live in today; in theory, Tamriel could see another industrialized society in the future, although it would be so distant we might not see it at all, at most reaching what we used to see in the 16th and 17th Centuries.

It's a trope in most science fiction, fantasy, etc games. Ancient artifacts are more advanced and powerful than anything modern. Even in Shadowrun nuclear weapons from before the awakening of the old races. There's only two instances in Dragon Age where they suggest technology moves forward. Dwarf noble origin in the first one when recovering the ancient Aeducan shield. Inquisition when assaulting Adamant Fortress. Technology is stagnant in Star Wars too, the only factions that progress it are the Empire and First Order. Lightsabers should be incredibly obsolete by this point, and anyone thinking they might face a jedi would have a solid projectile weapon.

I was wondering - what do you study in university? About the topic of this great video - imo, the problem in discussing Tamriel while applying the logic of our own world is not really productive. The world in the Elder Scrolls was never intended to be anything close to a detailed fantasy universe where you can research things like demographics, climate, economy, how the magic would affect all these. For example, if you have a transmute magic where u can create precious metals, gold can become abundant so it will probably be abandoned by states which might start using even more precious metals or soul gems. If I was a ruler, Id create an academy which practices transmute magic and I will employ organizations like the Penitus Oculatus to hunt down magicians who practice the transmute spell which will lower the possibility of anyone producing tons of gold. The problem is that there will surely be another kingdom that has the resources to do this so I will have to find a way to deal with them - either investing more in covert actions, some trade deal or open war. I really doubt Bethesda Game studios will bother to worldbuild in-depth because its simply too much work for too little gain considering the fact that most players dont care about such intricacies. Edit: Keep up the good videos man! You bring up really interesting topics which are always fun to explore.

The thing is: levitation is not flight, an airship can be used for bombing as you said plus carrying resources. What I am curious about is why are there no guns? Even say flintlock like guns? It's not that much of a stretch since bows practically dominate and crossbows do exist so they have some kind of frame work. I would say that why do X when you can Y? Because as you said battle mages are scarce in some parts so better to innovate like what if they need to resist magic but don't have spells? Technology comes in. In world of warcraft for example magic and tech exist side by side they live in a sort of, American Revolution technology style era, more fantasy like obviously.

A world without need for technology is a world where everything has been achieved and fulfilled. Ask any Mede emperor if he needs a bomber or a satellite. I guess you can not just say that TES is a medieval looking game and Bethesda doesn't want to change that. But lore wise, it makes no sense.

The Empire should create new techs , because if a second great war started , it would be complicated , it was shown in the past that techologie can destroy the aldmeri dominion (Numidium) and because they have weaker races in the empire: -Bretons are less gifted in magic compared to the atmer -Nords are just warriors (they still have some mages but it's mostly a warrior race) -Orcs=Nords but with berserker -Dunmer are less trusted by the nords (mostly in windhelm) but are still powerful mages , less than altmers because they are the cursed chimers And the Aldmeri dominion has cool races : -The altmer are the most gifted in magic -Bosmers are natural hunters -Khajiits are sneeky , because they have fur , they could technically survive in skyrim and they have breeds of khajiits that look like housecats , and if cats exist in TES (I have never seen one without mods) it could create fear (and cat murder) But with technology , they could overcome the evil mers : -Airships that are too high to be dammaged by magicka or arrows against the altmer (and bomb them) -Guns against the bosmer (If they destroy trees the Empire could be seen as evil) -And watever agaisnt khajiits , just use alchemy or something to know if a pet is a Khajiit or not.

Then you have to hit a spot making them steer Into a mountain and explode. Idk It played In my head and it looked so crazy.

Great video as usual! Just one thing though: Hospitals are not present in TES is a bit of a far shot. The temples of Kynareth and generic Alchemy shops are often the ones offering health clinic and apotheke services. There is evidence both in the games and the books. Also, military field hospitals where the wounded soldiers are treated through alchemy. Alchemy is not magic.

In actuality the High Elves used to have an Airship Fleet they had a space program so perhaps you sell the old elves short the original spirits that took physical form built wonders the likes of which the following races would never be able to do one just needs to look at the animated time Tower or the white-gold tower or the Crystal Tower to see that the original Spirits could craft things far beyond any other race there are very much intact weapons like guns and Cannon's one must know where to look for example hammerfell the Redguard there have an entire group of soldiers dedicated to firearms probably Flintlock or single-shot muskets

I believe firmly that Hammerfell or Blackmarsh or Iliac Bay, when the time comes, if there is an ES in Blackmarsh or the general Iliac Bay region, will introduce flintlock-and-musket style weapons. Hammerfell isn't good with magic, and since they're inspired by golden age India, piracy, etc. and in a war with the Thalmor, since war does breed innovation and the Thalmor are elves, natural skilled magicians, Hammerfell's military will definitely need to improve their tech. Hoping dearly that they do start up guns then.
