Why is salvation by works the predominantly held viewpoint? | GotQuestions.org

Most agreed the Bible teaches that we are not saved by good works, but by grace through faith. However, a works based salvation, which is essentially an attempt to earn our salvation, is believed by many. Why is that? In this video, Pastor Nelson with Bible Munch answers the question, “Why is salvation by works the predominantly held viewpoint”.

The maker of the video himself admits that there is a "true faith" which means: faith + works, and a "false faith" which means: faith without works. Faith with works is not "faith alone" - and the "false faith" cannot result in salvation. In this way "faith" and "works" are intrinsically connected. Of course they are both not sufficient to grant us salvation - it happens ONLY by the grace of God who mercifully forgives us our sins. Yet we know, that not all people will experience this grace, and what makes the difference are good works in contrast to bad works of the evildoers - Jesus, the judge of the living and of the death gives us criteria for His judgment (like in Matth. 25) - and they all are connected to good works.

While they didn’t say Catholic Church in the video, it certainly seems they were referring to the Catholic Church with the picture of the rosary. The church’s understanding of justification is worth looking into as it is not as he is describing it here. I would recommend looking into what the Catholic Church teaches on justification from her own sources. You can check out Catholic Apologist Jimmy Akin on how the church understands justification for a more nuanced and scripturally based view. You may not agree in the end with the churches position, but at least then you will understand what the church actually teaches, not what someone THINKS the church teaches. My brothers and sisters in Christ I ask you to pray for me and I will keep you in my prayers as well.

People getting sucked into work bases or repentance salvation have never read the Bible to study it. The bible does not state that whover does the good works of repenting and belives in him will be saved. The gift of salvation is something given to those who Belive on the Lord Jesus that he is who he said he is and that he will do what he says he would. He took the punishment for our sins. Your guilty of your sins and the sintance God gives you for your sins is Death. It has nothing to do with works or repentance. Did Jesus state that if your repentance is good enought then I might decide to save you? Someone who claims that if you do not repent everytime you sin you lose salvation is to call Jesus a lier and state that going to the cross and dying for your sins was not enought to be forgiven of sin. Jusus paid it full past, present and future. God made salvation so simple that a child can figure it out. It is a gift not something you have to work for or it will be taken away from you if you don't repent each time you sin. The thing about repentance is the God will bless you when you turn away from sin because he know that when you sin it robs you of the life you could live. He wants to show you grace and give you gifts but if you dwell in sin you run the risk of having God correct you with the rod. Does a good father shower a spoild child throwin a tamtam and sining all over their life with gifts or does he correct them and point them in a better direction. Spar the rod spoil the child.

Christ be with you you do not seem to have read the bible why are you mocking God this is what St Paul says about the need to do good works to receive eternal life. Do not be deceived; *God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.* For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; *but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.* *And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart. * (Gal 6:7-9) the bible tells us that we must repent or perish (Luke 13:2-4) that we need to repent for the forgiveness of sins (acts 2:38) Jesus told us to bring sinners to repentance was what he came to do. (luke 5:32) and it was what he sent St Paul out to do (Acts 26:15-20) In repentance it is our past sins that have been forgiven. For whoever lacks these things is blind and shortsighted *and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.* Therefore, brethren, *be the more zealous to confirm your call and election, for if you do this you will never fall;* so there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. @@MrKev1664 The Scriptures tell us there is only one “way’ to be saved when Christ made this statement in the Gospel of John: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6 (KJV) If we place our full faith in Christ and his finished work on the cross to redeem us we will be saved: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9 (KJV) The Scriptures are clear that there is only way to be saved and that is by placing our faith and trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John 5:24 (KJV) Repentance is not even mentioned once. You seem to think that somehow repentance is a requirement for salvation. The Holy Bible is crystal clear about what you need to do to gain eternal salvation. Repentance is not one of them. Repentance is a turning away from your old life and turning towards Jesus. The texts you sited is an example of why we should turn from sin. Sin in our life robs us of what our lives could be yet we are not required to do that to gain salvation. There are three things that will hinder genuine believers from doing all they can to serve Christ with their lives and live Godly live. Blindness to sin, unrepentant sin and fear of losing one’s salvation. I pray that you will do as God commands “know that ye have eternal life” today and not live in the fear of losing one's salvation by practicing works based salvation.

Jesus certainly is the way the truth and the life and he continues by tell us what that will mean dor those who believe in him. “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. He tells us what these works will be. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. (John 14:15) He tells us these works will be necessary for us to abide in him and for he and the father to abide in us. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. (John 14:20-24) He continues this thought telling us that unless we continue to abide in him we will be taken away and burned. One in producing the fruit of obedience will we find true joy. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. This is his way and his truth that we may have life. In regards to Rom 10:9 we gave seen to believe with our hearts we must do his works and keep his commandments otherwise we do not love him. He also tells us that for calling him Lord to have any meaning we must do as he says. “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? (Luke 6:46) Now on to John 5:24 Jesus tells us who he is referring to when he says believe in him We already know those who hear God’s work must do it. (Luke 6:46) We already know that those who believe in Jesus do his work but here we see the believers are those who do good and not evil. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. “Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself, and has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come forth, *those who have done good, to the resurrection of life,* and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment. (John 5:24-29) The only way to know we have know we have eternal life is to have the Son because he is life. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who has not the Son of God has not life. (1 John 5:11-13) I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 john 5:11-13) And as we have seen the only way to have that Son is to keep his commandments. (John 14:20-24) If someone bing another doctrine, one lacking in the need to obey Christ, his commandments and teachings then the do not have God. Any one who goes ahead and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God; he who abides in the doctrine has both the Father and the Son. If any one comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into the house or give him any greeting; for he who greets him shares his wicked work. (2 John 9-11) Come to Christ

Christ be with you to receive Gods free gift we must reject sin live in righteousness as a slave to God. What then? *Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace?* By no means! Do you not know that if you yield yourselves to any one as obedient slaves, *you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death,* or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? *But thanks be to God,* that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, *have become slaves of righteousness.* I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once yielded your members to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now yield your members to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But then what return did you get from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. *But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life.* For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. God's gift is free because we cannot pay its price not because we do not have to work, that mocks God. Do not be deceived; *God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.* For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; *but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.* *And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart.* (Gal 6:7-9) St Paul was Gods glory because he obeyed Christ and produced much fruit. *By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.* (John 15:8) I suggest you read the bible instead of creating false stories. God still requires us to reject sin and walk in righteousness as his slaves so we may be sanctified. This is our choice and is the part we play in our salvation. Our works glorify god. Come to Christ

As an atheist i can tell you we do have a moral basis for making such judgement about what's right and wrong, we just don't appeal to a God that hasn't been demonstrated to exist but even if we did, that would still only be his subjective opinion. However, I wouldn't want to take moral advise from the bible God nor should anyone else for that matter, because he thinks nothing of drowning babies and everyone else too. I myself find that immoral, God doesn't, therefore i am morally superior in that regard. More evil has been done in the world and continues to today as a result of Christianity and those religions than by any non religious people. Remember that when you're talking about how we know right and wrong because of him. Lastly: our sense of morality as people is a result of our evolutionary psychology, we lived in tribes and any selfish person would be killed.

Christ be with you While I am happy to receive the prayers i feel they would be better placed on those who feel good works unnecessary and feel its ok to mock God by suggest they have eternal life without them. Do not be deceived; *God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.* For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; *but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.* *And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart.* (Gal 6:7-9) Come to Christ

Definitely any "good" works in our own flesh are filthy. Our works that are motivated and powered by the Holy Spirit are wonderful.
