Why is Rolex's Le Mans 100th Anniversary Daytona Unique?
Ойын-сауық
A Discussion around Rolex and the 100th Anniversary of Le Mans Daytona Release. This important and symbolic Daytona is the first of its kinda, celebrating the significance of this historic moment, marking a milestone in Rolex’s history. Not only the original backstory of how the Cosmograph was once going to be called the “Le Mans” but how it now, as the official timekeeper, can celebrate the importance of Le Mans Centenary by creating a nostalgic homologation of Classic and Modern Design.

Correction: The Original Cosmograph was named after the "Daytona 24 hours" not the "Daytona 500" This launch took everyone by surprise and is one of the best Modern Rolex Daytona’s ever made. I feel this watch symbolises a lot more than what we see on the surface, especially when we look back to the Cosmograph’s origins and how it was originally almost called the “Le Mans” and where now, as the official timekeeper, Rolex can celebrate the Centenary of the event while creating a piece that evokes that bit of nostalgia. What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that it's my most wanted Rolex ever. A lot of people saying these will be safe queens but I'd wear this everywhere my arm won't get chopped off to get it. I've got a decent shot at getting the first at my AD. They've sold me a SS Panda Daytona and a Sprite in the past 12 months. I got a text wink from the manager at the AD when I expressed my interest over the weekend. I had a green Skydweller, Titanium YM, and a palm dialed DJ on my "wish list" there but told her to backburner those. They're honestly just collection fillers, whereas this new release is one I WANT...BADLY. It fixed everything I didn't like about the white gold Daytona. Now you have bezel protection for the softer case metal, more legible and less fussy subdial design. It's everything. We'll see how allocations shake out. It's a general catalog release, so who knows.

@@2thdocdds I really hope you're one of the first to get one Caarac. I also have this belief in the back of my mind that most Daytona's end up in their boxes in a dark corner somewhere (a real travesty) - this Reverse panda dial sums up exactly how a model like this should've been addressed from day one (I feel the same about TAG Heuer's new Glassbox Carrera). The fact that these are WG and so stealth... cherry on top. It's just terrific 🥃 Good luck to you brother!
This is the best looking Daytona I've seen in a long time. The current models never really clicked with me, but this one with it's mix of modern and vintage looks amazing. Cool to learn a bit of the history behind this commemorative edition too!
I love the way you look at this release in a positive and exciting way where most KZread channels are mocking this anniversary model for being pretty limited and almost impossible to get. I personally think this one is brilliant even though I’m still not sure about the display caseback…for some reason I don’t get excited about that feature.

The moment I saw it (during the race) the "this is brilliant" crossed my mind too. This is the only Rolex I would consider buying that doesn't at least have a Zenith movement. But racing heritage is not really a presige thing because it's a fairly new sport in the grand scheme of watch heritage. And Rolex's entry into sports car racing was also fairly new. This is what the regular-production 2023 stainless steel Daytonas should’ve looked like, and how they should look moving forward into the foreseeable future, with see-through case backs and all. Rolex should also consider grade-5 titanium cases and bracelets, like on the new Yacht-Master, as an alternative option, so there could be two panda options, and two reverse panda options. Choose your dial, and material.
@ID-Guy
Жыл бұрын
There is so much opportunity for them to expand the collection, and I agree, this is the kind of Daytona that cements the design. Funny enough, they've made a regular production version of this piece (in precious metal) with solid sub-dials. I think that's how they differentiate them from the steel variations. Imagine being able to build your own Daytona? 🥃
@davidcrane7603
Жыл бұрын
@@ID-Guy Yes, that's what they've been doing, and it's the wrong way to go. In my opinion, the production stainless steel Daytonas deserve the same vintage design aesthetics. If you want gold or platinum, fine, but enthusiasts of the stainless steel models don't deserve to suffer because they either don't like/want or can't afford the precious metal versions. That's elitist nonsense. I'm frankly not a fan of the 90's design change exhibited by the Zenith Daytona 16520. I appreciate it, but I much prefer the vintage Daytona design language, particularly that of the Big Red and Paul Newman variants.

That Titanium is not a good look, but I may be wrong 2. Skittles OP ..oh lord I'm gonna be sick 3. Tried the Explorer 40. A little heavy but looks very good 4. The 1908 looked very sterile. Not for me, and unaffordable anyway... I didn't bother trying on 5. The black and grey GMT just looks pointless and a bit gross 6. Tried the 36mm Explorer two tone. Very small, similar to my Casio w-86 in size, but very comfy and nice. I confirmed that I'll get the 36mm standard on "slow time" when I've saved up, so the AD will keep me on the list and I'll follow up in a few years, or when I'm ready I did wonder if I'm not better off with something else like a nice Omega... the Explorer is very discreet and classic, but i wonder how much of this obsession is marketing... would I want it if it said "Hublot" on the dial and had no history? I don't think so.... Oh and they offered me this new Daytona but I said "naaaah" 😂

So wasn't the Daytona name derived from the Daytona endurance race, and not the Daytona 500??? The one named the Rolex 24 at Daytona? 1 of the triple crown of endurance racing? (daytona, sebring and le mans). Which is why I find this watch slightly perplexing...a watch named for a race/racetrack (daytona) that is a tribute to another race, yet does not say Le Mans anywhere on the watch, but says Daytona twice. I really think they should have replaced the "daytona" with "le mans" for this 1 watch. People these days are much better informed and, I'm my experience, a frank and honest assessment of product, is far more likely to succeed. Having said that, I appreciate that you're not actually a sales person either.
This would be perfect if they put Lemans on the dial instead of Daytona

Imagine how slick that would be? The thought crossed my mind (came to the conclusion that it would interfere with the "Daytona" brand identity) 😉
...and absolutely no one making under a million a year will be able to get one.

I'd love to call it the "Le Mans" BUT then the "Daytona" name is the recognisable property. It should just be called the "Cosmograph" these days 😉

@@ID-Guy So funny, because where there is a Daytona Sports Car race, most associate Daytona with NASCAR and the good ole' boys. Not generally Rolex target market.
Still illegible after all these years.

It is a bit kitsch but having it offset at the bottom left counterbalances the pushers nicely. Put it this way, it's kinda subtle (and the choice of red probably suited the combo best 😆)
If it wasn’t a Rolex, nobody would care about a minuscule change like that. But it’s a Rolex so it’s groundbreaking and unique! Omg let me pay 5000000000 euros over the normal price.
