Why is my Lawn BROWN?! | The ROOT of my FUNGUS problem

My lawn is turning brown and yellow and has a serious fungus/disease problem but in reality the fungus is just a symptom of a greater problem that lies in my soil. It can be challenging to properly diagnose the problem causing the browning or yellowing color in your lawn since it can be caused by dormancy, heat stress, drought, dog pee, fungus/disease, or insects. In this video I talk about what's going on in my lawn and why.

    I’m getting ready to rip up my entire yard and start over. We sprayed the clover that was growing and will begin cleaning up soon. I’m sending soil samples to NCState to find out what our soil needs. It used to be 80% moss until we had 4 trees cut about 3 years ago. Any advice you can offer will be appreciated!

    Manure Happens and it happened to me last year. The experts said it was a perfect combination of everything. Too little and then too much watering. Heat and sun. Another thought was I created a micro climate in my back yard because of the heavy landscaping with tree and shrubs. Did an aeration and reseeding and GREEN came back this year. Have been putting down a fungicide every month this year. "They" said when you see fungus damage, it's already too late. Like you said "It's just grass." There is always the fall renewal period and now you have a project.

    I feel for you man! I have read that some trees make the soil alkaline. I wouldn't say drought causes fungus, but rather too much moisture. Fungus can be very hard to battle if you can't find the source, but I do agree if you make the soil healthy, it will successfully conquer any disease. Try watering with a soaker-hose which will keep the soil moist but the blades dry.

    This is sad, I watched your video with Matt and your lawn was beautiful at that time. I realize this video is almost a year old but I ran into something similar just within the last few weeks here in Houston. I had pushed my lawn (St Augustine) beginning in April, it was looking thick, lush, and green. Around the middle of May we had 11 days of heavy rain. That's when the "Take All Root Rot" swept through my yard. Sections of the backyard are almost completely dead, the front yard fared much better....but it's still sweeping through my yard, it hasn't stopped yet. It's funny that the root rot stops right at the property line. I'm going to start applying fertilizer at greatly reduced rates to see if that reduces the risk of fungus and I'm going to fix my soil PH. It's currently around 7 to 7.2, it should be 6 to 6.5. Thanks for the video !!!

    My guess is that the reason the area around the tree doesn't have the fungus problem is one of two things: Either A.) since the area is shaded, the turf doesn't get as stressed out as the other parts of your yard. or B.) that area has a lower pH due to the extra organic matter build up from years of leaves being mulched into the soil.

    Xzemplar is by far the best fungicide for dollar spot. It's also very good for Brown patch. That and Azoxystrobin are great rotational products. You should rotate between the two after each application to avoid resistance. You could also rotate in Propiconazole every now and then, but never apply that during temps above 85 or it could damage the grass. The Xzemplar is more expensive, $150, but comes with enough to treat an acre so it will last several years if only treating 6000-7000 square feet.

    I feel your pain. Our lawn looked fantastic last fall but this spring it kind of looks really bad. Although it has improved slightly since early spring. I think I have a fungus spot in the very center of the front. May be necrotic ring spot, but I don't know for sure. thinking of throwing some humic acid on it and the rest of a bag of fungicide to see if that helps. I'm sure your lawn has gotten better since this video is 2 years old.

    I see this is a year old video..this summer 2021 same thing happened to me on my big yard. But on top of all this the graboids moved in(gophers). Ever one would say my yard is better then a park or golf course. Really makes your heart sink and not a joy to mow for sure.. I read somewhere fungus loves nitrogen and humidity on grass. Make sense water to much in 110 degrees the water in soild be like a steam bath for fungus which they love. I read also fungus when you mow over it hitches a ride under your mower deck and it's spred.. Mine started in back now in the front so sure it hitched a ride under mower.. good luck fellow lawn nuts and hang in there...sure by early fall a cool down will help things..god bless

    I know how you feel. We've been seeing our lawn go to crap for the past FIVE YEARS!! We start seeing signs in mid June, and it progressly gets worse in July and August. It could be from our streetline tree surface roots, or it can be a fungas. I'm not sure what it is, but we our soil test results last October came back low on pottssuim. I went out and bought a pottssuim product due to the fact miloganite doesn't have pottasuim. I also bought a dethatcher. I said to myself this is the machine that is going put my lawn back to lawn dominance. NOT!! IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP ONCE AGAIN!! I'm thinking about roto tillering and starting from scratch or applying a second dose of fungicide. I'm lost!

    @@TheLawnGuardian I am seeing a similar problem in my lawn and also see the shaded areas continuing to thrive without fungus. My hypothesis is that during the heat of the day, the soil temperatures in the sunny areas are climbing to an optimum temperature for fungus to grow and with the humidity and moisture staying in these areas at night the fungus goes wild. I actually stopped watering for 2 weeks straight although we did get a large amount of rain. I am slowly seeing some recovery without adding fungicide. Although I will be treating a couple of weeks prior to dethatching, aerating and overseeding in the fall.

    Hey Ben, I told you that I'm dealing with brown patch. I did all the preventative apps before our hot, humid weather hit. Still didn't prevent it! It shows Mother Nature runs the show. I was wondering if its something in my soil causing it to have outbreaks 2 years in a row? I think my PH was a little over 7? Who knows? I don't have the resources you do so I will follow you and learn something. If course, the weather here has been wet, high humidity, high dew points, and temperatures. Everything against us. Good luck!

  • @TheLawnGuardian

    Great question! This wouldn't have been the cause for the pH problem in my lawn since I had just moved into this house. I have heard humic acids don't do a lot in soils with a high pH. In relation to your question, I would guess that there isn't enough of a concentration of KOH in these products to have a noticeable impact on pH. This would be a good question for JP or Matt Martin though. Thanks for watching!

    But I'm confused 🤔 if you overseed then you have to keep watering the lawn continually so the seeds germinate for to long. Then doesn't overwatering cause fungus on your lawn? I need to overseed but I'm afraid of my lawn getting fungus because of overwatering 🤯

  • @TheLawnGuardian

    @TheLawnGuardian

    I overseeded in the fall not the summer. Overseeding in the summer is generally not a good idea due to the heat and for the exact reason you mention with watering. You won't have the same fungus problems in the fall.

If you don't want to watch, that's okay but I thought I'd refer you to it if you'd like to see it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hGFmvLqmXa-Xhaw.html I would recommend reaching out to Matt Martin on the KZread channel called The Grass Factor. He is a professional in the industry and will be able to better help you with whatever fungus problems you may have. In my videos I try to avoid saying that someone needs to take steps A,B,C because I'm not a professional in the turf industry and I know everyone's situations may be different and what I did may not apply or work in someone else's lawn. I try to just show what's going on in my lawn rather than tell people what they need to do since I do not have the proper education and experience to provide someone with guidance. Thanks again for watching and I hope you are able to get the proper guidance for your situation!
