Why is My Finger Still Swollen?

Michelle, Hand expert for Virtual Hand Care, explains why your finger or hand can be swollen for a long time after an injury.
I get asked this question all the time so I wanted to share with you some of the reasons why swelling takes a long time to go away. Swelling in the finger or fingers, hand, or wrist after an injury can be part of the normal healing process. Although, there could be other reasons why the swelling stays in the fingers or hand so check out this video to learn more!
Luckily there are ways you can try to help speed the process along. You can check out my Best 5 Tips for Swollen Fingers here • BEST 5 TIPS for SWOLLE...

I have a multifragmentary fracture in my left middlefinger. It's broken 3 times lengthwise! :D Thank God, everything was still in line so I didn't need surgery. After 6 weeks, it healed quite well but the lowest segment close to the hand is still swollen. From your videos I know why that is and I have looked in your videos for a few exercises because by physiotherapist is overbooked. Watching your videos is a pleasure because you answer all the questions I have at this point and you present all that helpful info so beautifully. Best wishes from Germany!!!!

I fell, tripped over a very small step, and fell forward, and hurt my hand. That seems to be my only injury. It hurt really bad! About an hr. after, I could move them slightly, but still alot of pain. That was about 7 hrs. Ago. The pain has lessened, I applied some pain cream with hemp, and that seemed to help. So I'm not sure if might have a sprain, or some trauma with some swelling. Can you advise me what to do next? Thank you!

Helpful. I dislocated (I think) the middle joint on my pinky when I tripped hiking about eight weeks ago. Functionally, it's fine - I can play piano and guitar, okay grip strength, so I don't think the bone was affected. However, the "inside" (next to my ring finger side) where I guess the tendons/ligaments are continues to have a bulge and is a little sore if you push on it. I'm totally fine with waiting, as I'd hate to lose the functionality I have now with a cast or splint.

Guitar player here. Coworker smashed multiple fingers between two boards 3 days ago. Major swelling and stiffness and soreness. But really no loss of mobility at the joints, thankfully. It's just really painful to curl them and painful to the touch anything. I can't play yet, not even close. I'm so worried about "permanent" or prolonged swelling in the ring finger of my fretting hand. When I do a comparison with the fingers on my right hand....I want to cry.

Guitar player here as well. Injured my middle finger breaking up a dog fight four months ago, and my right hand middle finger is still sore and swollen. I can still use it for finger style playing, but I don't think I'll be able to gig for two or three hours, as it starts to get sore and weak. Hoping it heals within the year.

I was cutting a bunch of strong cardboard for a long time to make book covers. It was difficult to cut through the cardboard but I kept going. Even when my finger started to hurt, I still kept at it until I finished. I'm too stubborn for my own good sometimes. My finger (pointer finger, middle area where it was rubbing against the handles of the scissors) is now sort of swollen. I thought it would turn into a blister after a few hours but fluid is just staying in place which makes my finger kinda stiff. The area where my finger was rubbing against the grip feels kinda numb when I touch it. What do I do? I have commissions to do and I don't want my finger to bug me while I'm drawing :,3

Just frustrating the swelling remains

That was reassuring. I'm three months post-op on distal radius and ulna fractures. My wrist has been healing well and I expected there to be a long healing/recovery period. I did not expect how much my hand would be affected. The persistent swelling in my knuckles and finger joints seems to be preventing any restoration of finger mobility and I've developed trigger finger in index and pinkie. The PTs response is to double down in forcing my wrist into flexion way past the initial pain point. That does nothing for my fingers, but it sure irritates and inflames the extensor tendons down where they bunch up as they enter the carpal tunnel.

@@diffident2406 Now a little over one year post-operation. Wrist is OK and I am still re-gaining strength. Fingers are much better, but still have minor problems. I got a steroid shot in each knuckle. That gave blissful relief for a few weeks, but then the drug wore off. Progress is slow, but I no longer suffer triggering in my index. Triggering in the pinkie has been almost eliminated, but I did develop triggering in my ring finger. The trick that worked best for me to reduce triggering is to wrap a band-aid around the proximal joint of the affected finger and leave it there for a week or more. The goal is to avoid triggering and allow the inflamed tendon and its pulley to reduce back to normal size. During the first six months of healing, I got much pain relief and anti-inflammatory effect from weed. Far better than any of the prescriptions that the doctors gave me. But I tired of being high all the time, so I switched to CBD oils. Also better than pharmaceuticals. I'm lucky to have a good CBD shop near my house. Some formulations work better for me, others work better for a friend with a sore back. You just gotta experiment to find out what's best for you.

My PT is doing the exact same thing. My whole hand is swollen, and they are more concerned about forcing my swollen fingers into a fist than the swelling that prevents me from making a fist. Some of the swelling needs to subside to allow for more mobility. They are very aggressive with my fingers. I do communicate that with them, but they only talk about me making a fist. I'm a bit frustrated, but it's only been 2 weeks since I started PT.

I had a finger laceration on october the 10th, and although it doesn't hurt while I move my ring finger, the area is swollen and the skin doesn't look recovered yet even though its entirely closed up, it hurts a lot if I hit myself with something by accident, everyone who saw the injury said I needed stitches, although my parents ultimately decided not to bring me to the hospital (possibly because I was acting way too calm and comfortable, tho i did get dizzy and everything went blue a few minutes after, had to sit down) it closed up in about a week, and continued to heal and stopped hurting in about 3 weeks or so, do you think me not getting stitches had something to do with it still being swollen after 2 months?

Hey Michelle, I had a traumatic wrist break with the scaphoid receiving a screw and pins being installed on the opposite side (carpal bones?) as well as a ligament tear from a mountain biking accident. It has been 6 weeks since the accident & surgery and my index and middle fingers are still swollen almost twice the size of the fingers on my other hand. The swelling hasnt gone down much at all in the 6 weeks. I noticed you mentioned caffiene which i usually have up to 400 mg a day. I did not know this! Are there any other common substances that contribute to this aswell? Does increased water intake help the swelling? Im freaking out as im a master electrician, mountain biker and love other sports and video games. Everything i do involves this hand i lost.

Increased water intake can definitely help but there are other ways to help swelling such as compression, movement (not aggressive), etc. I would definitely see a Certified hand therapist who can give you more specific tips because your injury/surgery is quite involved requires a specific protocol to follow.

@@siro8472 The fingers are still a little stiff but I have full movement, but there is a small amount of lingering stiffness and nerve damage. The wrist never really healed. It only moves 45 degrees now and beyond that it becomes painful, likely due to cartilidge which cannot be fixed. I either have to live with the pain or look into getting a fusion which will remove wrist movement forever to stop it from bending to the point of feeling pain. This injury overall screwed up my ability to work and have active sports type hobbies like mountain biking.

Is it best to have just filled a incident at work to have gotten that checked? I just don't like that my numbness hasn't gone away. it almost feels like when you leave a rubber band on and its turning your finger purple.

I injured my finger by pulling too hard on something and heard a velcro sounding ripping noise. My finger was swollen and stiff for around 4 months and it's been a 13 months later and it still has a little stiffness and fluid around my knuckle. The doctor told me if I can bend it then it will be fine. He said he can give me a cortizone shot if wanted . Can you tell me if my finger will eventually heal and not have fluid build up around it. 13 months seems like a long time to heal.

Interesting video. I do have a very important question for you: I broke 4th and 5th metacarpal bones by accident at work and I've been operated with Kishner wires, four in total two for each finger. The breakage happened just behind the nuckles. I removed the wires after one month and a week and I began fisioteraphy right away. After more then 10 meetings and exercises at home I still cannot close my hand properly expecially from the nuckles, the first bend is just around 45 degrees... I cannot basically pull a rope... I'll check another therapist tomorrow but do you have any tip? Thanks Gabriele
