Why is Jerome the Wickedest Town in the West?

Historic Jerome State Park - Mingus Mountains Check out the Historic Jerome State Park located in Jerome Arizona. The museum inside is well done and shows the vast history of this mining town. The ghost stories and views make Jerome a must-see After Jerome's initial peak of popularity and growth, the optimists who came seeking riches quickly turned to desperation and greed. This transition into greed and crime not only led to the “Wickedest Town in the West” nickname but also created the ghosts that haunt the grounds today.

Hi Russ! I am a resident of Prescott for 35 years and have been to Jerome many times. The hotel on the hill used to be the hospital. On 1 visit to Jerome we stumbled upon a unknown museum 2 doors down from the Spirit Room. We walked in this curio shop and a sign said Museum! Went upstairs and it was the old movie house in the day. Velvet Curtains, seating, old organ, all the old movie and firefighting equipment was on display, and showed a movie on the history of Jerome. Was the highlight of the trip that day and felt like we had hit the Mother Lode with that unexpected find.

Thanks for the shots of downtown Jerome, I went there in the early 1970's and bought a Gibson mandolin at a hippie music shop, still have it. Back then it was hippies and a loose Knotts berry farm feel with staged gun fights and saloons. NICE.

My father in law and his brothers were born in Jerome. They were born in what is now the Jerome Grand Hotel. It was a hospital back in the 30's. My wife made a book about her father and uncles, it is on a table in the hotel lobby. They grew up on the Hogback. Their father and grand father worked for the Little Daisy Mine. His grand father even helped build the Sliding Jail. Wife and I have been there a number of times. The road to Prescott has 168 turns in 8 miles. My wife found a couple pictures in the museum that included her grandfather.

Love Jerome Biggest baddest wildest town in the wild west!!! Brothel on every corner. Bar on every corner. Museum is the original owners house and the hotel he built for miners is privately owned now!!! Had the best virgin Margarita ever in the one restaurant on the main drag!!! And the ride to Prescott on my Goldwing was spectacular!!!

At 25:30, that in not a mine or smelter, it is a sand, gravel and cement company. You can get there via the roundabout at the bottom of the hill below Jerome. Drove out there once just to see what was there. Lots of trucks and cement mixers.

I live in San Francisco, and, in 1989, I did a driving tour of The Grand Canyon and Sedona. A couple of colleagues strongly encouraged me to visit Jerome. What a joy it was! The drive ... actually, around the whole region ... was beautiful. And, the drive to Jerome was, indeed, a little "edgy." It was there that I had the best hamburger of my life. There are a couple of KZread videos about "Haunter Hamburger," which looks like the place where I ate, sitting on a back deck, overlooking the enormous valley. It was a memorably pleasant day. Thank you for the reminder.

There was an old prospector that owned one of the mines for years! He was famous in town and the area. Crazy cool guy. For a few years a local VW bus meet up would happen there. I went in ‘98. The best vintage bus run and meetup I’ve ever been on. Imagine a couple hundred VW buses cruisin those same roads. It was a blast. I even took video.. gotta find that old tape! Thanks for this run down memory lane. Inspiring me to go back soon!

In 1962 our family when to Jerome, so my dad could race his 1958 Austin Healy. It was called the Jerome hill climb, at the same time Glen Ford and Henry Fonda were in town filming “The Rounders” I was 10 years old at the time, I was asked to be an extra in the movie, pretty cool! I returned in 1988 with 14 others on motorcycles, the road was too twisty according to the lady at the gas station, that’s all we needed to hear! We toured the museum, saw the video from the Jerome hill climb…and there was my dad in the Healy! Russ thank you for the memory’s.

My grandfather came to the U.S. when he was 16 yrs. old from Croatia. He worked for a short time in the mines in Jerome, but said the work was too hard & dirty.. He went back to Cleveland, Ohio & entered barber school. He then returned to Cottonwood and was the only barber in town for about 40 years. My Dad & one of his brothers moved from Arkansas to Cottonwood when he was 21 years old. He went to get a haircut one day at my Grandfather's barber shop & saw a cute girl inside shining shoes (my Mom) She was 9 years younger than my Dad so he said he stayed around until she was 19 and they got married. My Mom graduated from Clarkdale High SchooI. I was born in Cottonwood and we use to go up to Jerome in the 60's when I was about 10 yrs. old to watch the Jerome Hill climb races, the sides of the road was lined with bales of straw. One of my aunts owned a large home that was built on the side of a cliff & the front was built on wooden support beams that practically hung over the left lane of 89A as you just start to come up the hill into town.

Thank you for take your viewers with you on your journey to these small towns. What you said Jerome was honeycombed with mines. It sort of reminded me of your visit to West Virginia and the coal mines which honeycomb the state. Every once in a while a hole will appear in the road where a mine shaft collapsed. I hope that Jerome doesn't suffer a similar situation. Good videos and narration.

If I remember correctly when I was at that State Park in 1993, the three dimensional mine map (the first one shown) indicated that the deepest workings were below sea level !! This would mean that the mine workings are deeper than 5.000 feet. Other sources of information say that the deepest were 4.200, Not quite down to sea level.

There's so much to absorb still in that museum. Awesome! Are you setting the camera up inside a haunted place while staying in the Beast or will you be with the camera? Make sure you get a camera that has hyper smooth stabilization, it doesn't show when your shaking nervously when the apparition appears.😊👍
