Why is it so hard for Ukraine to counter glide bombs

Ғылым және технология

Russia's extensive use of glide bombs has played a significant role in their recent successes on the battlefield. These powerful weapons rain down on Ukraine every week, leaving behind massive 20-meter-wide craters and obliterating military positions. In their latest offensive in Kharkiv Oblast, Russia heavily relied on glide bombs to pave the way for their ground troops. Since May 10, Russian forces have seized control of numerous villages near the border and have even entered the town of Vovchansk.
Despite their simplicity and low cost, glide bombs have proven to be highly effective for Russia in full-scale warfare. They played a significant role in the capture of Avdiivka, a strategic city, marking Russia's first major victory in months.
Meanwhile, although Ukraine continues to receive advanced air defenses and other military equipment from its allies, it still faces challenges in defending against glide bombs. This makes us wonder: Why hasn't Ukraine been able to effectively counter these weapons?

Patriot system does not intercept glide bombs, but it does shoot down the russian planes that carry those bombs (6 of them in 3 days back in February). There is a reason russian jets stopped using glide bombs in Kharkv region after US aid was unblocked. The puny UAF may even have local air superiority for past week since russian jets seem to be afraid of flying there or even in Belgorod region.

The Patriot on the other hand has zero % , yes zero interception rate versus cruise missiles. It's based on the S-200 btw. It is considerably more expensive for NATO as their missiles are less effective, much more expensive, and they have to launch 4-5x more of them to be equally effective.

The Russian glide bombs do not use GPS, they use Russia's GLONASS. It is near impossible to defend against the glide bombs, because Russia has hundreds of thousands of the base bombs in storage. Russia doesn't have to build any actual bombs, though they do. These dropped bombs are almost useless in today's battlefield, as the bombers would have a hard time surviving to make it on target. But, add wings, navigation and standoff capabilities, and you have an inexpensive method of delivering a strike. The reliability and accuracy of these weapons are far inferior than those made in Western Countries, but that doesn't matter, because Russia can launch 100 times more of the bombs. Quantity has its advantages. Plus, how exactly could they be countered? Any intercepting missile would cost several times the cost of the bomb. A quick way to lose a war is spend $300,000 to shot down a $20,000 glide bomb. Missiles are exceedingly expensive, because they are designed to shoot down planes, which cost tens of millions to hundreds of millions. Even a $4,000,000 missile is worth it when you destroy an enemy asset that cost $40,000,000. It would be difficult to make any kind of defense that can intercept the glide bombs, that doesn't cost much more than the glide bombs. Trying to hit them with traditional AA wouldn't even work, because by the time the glide bomb is in range, it is a fast small target, and even if you get a hit, the glide bomb will still likely land somewhat near the intended target, and will certainly land in Ukrainian terrorist.

Right to the point. Not only that, Ukraine is missing practically all the other AA systems in the US arsenal to counter those bombs. They lack adequate air defense of even the front lines, they lack aircraft, they lack munitions.... they LACK EVERYTHING. Is this the kind of support the west is giving? What is it... average of 0.nothing of GDP of most European countries? Russia has incredibly loyal friends in Europe, they really don't want them to lose this war.

CORRECTION: Russia doesn't use GPS, they use GLONASS which is roughly the Russian equivalent of GPS. But unlike GPS which uses single channel and frequency to communicate with the satellite, GLONASS uses several channels and frequencies which can be changed in flight if the current one is compromised. That makes them nearly impossible to jam, unlike GPS.

glide bombs can be targeted and destroyed by german gepard mobile air defense . In daylight, glide bombs can be targeted by some manpad systems that use optical or laser targeting out to range limited by the specific manpad system.

Any attempt to jamm the GPS is useless because at the speed they go against the target their deviation at best tops at a dozen meters and the bomb still packs enough a punch for an indirect hit to cause considerable damage.

Western gliding GPS guided bombs are jammed also. Anything that uses GPS can be jammed because Russia is good at it. They can do even jamming of satellite GPS signals. Russian EW systems for jamming Western GPS produce stronger signal and cover longer distances, while West is not so good in jamming Russian GLONASS, thus they have less results (against FAB's, KAB's also).

They have no motor, so there is NO heat signature to lock onto. Just like the JDAM and the French Hammr. From the video's out here, their glide bombs are NOT very accurate, but they don't have to be. Without a thermal signature, it's basically like trying to shoot a rifle bullet out of the sky, using a rifle. russia can't shoot ours down either!
