Why is Fomapan So Popular

A short video tonight as it is Christmas eve. I just take a quick look at Fomapan as to why it is so popular. Not that I know how well it sells but my videos gain some much traction when I publish them.

So Why?
Affordability: Fomapan films are often more affordable compared to some other brands, making them an attractive option for photographers on a budget. This affordability allows photographers to experiment with different film stocks without breaking the bank.
Varied Options: Fomapan offers a range of film types and speeds, including ISO 100, 200, and 400. This variety allows photographers to choose a film that suits their specific needs and shooting conditions.
Grain Structure: Many photographers appreciate the grain structure of Fomapan films. The fine grain can contribute to a distinct aesthetic in the final images. Some photographers specifically choose Fomapan for its unique look, especially in portrait and artistic photography.
Tolerance to Exposure: Fomapan films are known for their forgiving nature when it comes to exposure. They often handle overexposure and underexposure reasonably well, giving photographers a bit more flexibility in challenging lighting situations.
Contrast and Tonality: Fomapan films are praised for their good contrast and tonality. They can produce rich blacks and a wide range of grays, contributing to the overall quality of the images.
Availability: Fomapan films are widely available in many parts of the world, making them accessible to a broad range of photographers. Availability is a crucial factor in the popularity of any film stock.

Unfortunately, in recent times my fomapan 100 has a very serious defect. Some of the frames are marred by fine veins (like those on the texture of a leaf), which are probably the result of an error when spreading the gelatine on the substrate. The film would be very interesting for the richness of grey tones and contrast, but the idea of losing a few shots because of this defect is terrifying. Their price in Italy is now close to that of the excellent Rollei. Their competitive advantage (5.5 euro x film) could vanish if these defects are not removed quickly. MErry Christmas.

Thanks for your comment as yeat I have not had any issues like you have. But will do a video if I find my results have issues. The only film I have had isses with is Ferrania P30 with uneven emulsion. I do love the Rollie films and prices are good. I do like the Retro S 400 but still need to try the 80s. Hope you have a great christmas.

I have used Foma 100, 200 and 400 in 35mm and generally have been quite satisfied, especially with the 100. I used Foma 200 in 120 and there was a fault with the emulsion, giving black dots and little splodges on the image. I subsequently found out that lots of other photographers were experiencing this defect and some had contacted Foma; the general consensus was that they weren't very helpful, though some did get a replacement film. I hope the New Year is a good'n. Keith

Used fomapan a lot when i began to get more into film photography a few years ago, always liked the results i got and have recently looked back at a few of the early rolls and i can tell it was a very forgiving film, given my lack of ability. Ive mostly switched to kentmere film now as in the current economic climate i feel i should support our homegrown industry and the cost is very close to fomapan anyway. Keep up the vids and heres to a good photographic year in 24.

Thanks for your comment. Interesting to hear how you started with Fomapan. I did use Kentmere ones or twice but did not get on with it. But it is a great budget film for sure. Lots more videos to come in 24.

The 100 and the 200 in 35mm are fine, although I have had a lot of problems with the 200 in 120 and 4X5 and the 100 in 4X5. Never tried the 400. They used to be cheap, not anymore. If you shop around you could get FP4 Plus at not much more than the price of the 200. Incidentally, the box speed for both the 100 and the 200 are at least a 1/2 stop on the optimistic side.

HI Lens Man Thanks for your comment Also for the information. It is a pity that the price has gone up so much. But I do manage to still get a good price. Looking through my scans and it would seem I have never used the 400iso. I have also not used 120 or large format.

I play around with a variety of B&W films and developers but am seriously considering Making Foma 100 and Rodinal as my go products. The 100 is so sharp in this developer and the tones are amazing. 1-50 for 7.5 minutes.

As much as I like Fomapan 100 and 400, I don't use it any more. I have had a lot of issues with white spots (on the scanned image) across the whole frame. In 120, some times I can only get 14 shots per roll instead of 15 and on my last roll the tape that sticks the emulsion to the backing paper intruded on to the last frame! Fomapan 200 is a completely different film. I now use Rollei RPX 400. Foma has some real QC issues.
