Why is China punishing Australia? The human impact of the trade war | Four Corners

Over the last twelve months, China has launched a wave of trade sanctions against Australia.
Industry after industry has been hit with a range of punishing measures, from massive new taxes to import restrictions.
As a result, many Australian products have effectively been banned from entering China, leaving the businesses that rely on this trade in peril.
But why is China punishing Australia and who is at risk?
From the barley fields of WA’s salt lake country to the lobster trawlers of Hobart, Four Corners reveals the human and financial cost of the ongoing dispute.

@Reido Astria LOL. If only you were genuine in your line of questioning. Alas of course you are barking up a tangent, so to speak. And no doubt doing so knowingly. It's observational. If a person says something that shows they've not thought things through then chances are they haven't. So either probably not a deep thinker or brainwashed to parrot certain platitudes. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck it's probably a ???? Some things are self-evident. Not everything is shown by a link to a text book or similar. Some things are obvious merely by observation. Like the woman who used to live in the same building as my family who used to screech and scream nonsense and who would bark at passing cars. I didn't need proof she was disturbed, it was self-evident from her actions.

I feel really bad for the hardworking Australians, but let's get this straight: the Australian government is to be blamed here. Your government has chosen to fight other's war instead of putting your well being as priority. If they really care about human rights record, they would have never dealt with both US and China (and I'd argue that the US has done worse). It's not about human rights, it's plain politics for the benefits of those on top.

To add, the overall export to China from Australia has increased because of iron ore. So essentially your government is still dealing with China with or without your (ordinary Australians) support. Now who owns these iron ore businesses? Not ordinary Australians for sure. So ask yourself this: "why are you being asked to sacrifice your livelihood when those on top are making money with China?"

This is a bad argument for defending China's actions. Have you ever heard of "proportional response"? For example, If I said bad things about you and then you shot me in the foot for it and threatened to shoot the other foot unless I apologized then that's not really a proportional response to my actions is it? You would be seen as psychotic. This is the same situation. Sure, I don't think aggressive rhetoric from the PM actually accomplishes anything, but China has wanted to use more aggressive coercion for a while now. Not because Australia's PM said something they didn't like, but because Australia holds completely different governance, economic prospect and values. Although most importantly because those structures align us with the USA, their direct competition. A structure that threatens the CCP's existence. So why I do believe Morrison deserves some blame for his dumb rhetoric. I similarly believe it is ignorant to the understanding of geopolitical prospects to think he is the reason this is happening in entirety. It was coming eventually with or without someone like Morrison.

Add "Between a rock and a hard place" As described in Charles Dickens novel "Great Expectations," England shipped its jailed inmates of debtors and criminals to settle Australia, but in Dickens novel, some of these people wanted to return to England for various reasons, specially after these debtors and criminals became very rich and successful developing the lands of Australia. Later, Australia was part of the British Commonwealth. It can be guessed that the Queen of England rather wishes England can regain Hong Kong back, while China believes that England took Hong Kong by unfair force during the Opium War, when the English forced the Chinese to become addicted to the drug opium, and when the Chinese tried to block the opium importation, England sent its naval forces to start the Opium War that ended with England getting Hong Kong. Guess that Australia still feels affiliations toward its old mother country of England, like in Dickens novel "Great Expectations" so that some of its politicians may side with England concerning Hong Kong. This creates the "between a rock and a hard place" issue. Another saying is "One cannot have the cake and eat it too." Another saying is "Seven years of feast are followed by seven years of famine (and drought,) specially if runaway global warming occurs. And, Joseph advised to the king of Egypt to build huge grain storages, and the king placed a tax on the farmers to set aside 20 percent of the harvest during the feast years to fill up the huge grain storages to prepare for the following famine, when the Earth becaome bone dry, and nothing grew. And, in the Book of Revelations, after the white horse appears on the scene with a loud noise (like the iron horse appearing on the scene with a cloud of white steam about a couple of hundred years ago) announcing the beginning of the End Times, the earth will become hot and dry with nothing growing, and all of the grasses are burnt in wild fires.

Perhaps to add to that they know that Australia unlike other countries depends on China (40% of all exports from Australia go to China), so that pissed them off, on the one hand they feed Australia on the other hand they are biting them... If China imposed tariffs on other countries it would not hurt them as much. I come from a western country, and I am shocked that everyone is so vigorously blaming China for everything while totally ignoring our rotten behavior. The massive propaganda and brainwashing is staggering. It's not China, WE are the problem, perhaps China is a problem as well but not nearly as large as the western leadership. I don't like China, but I definitely hate the western establishment - collection of psychopathic murderers.

39:19 "There seems to be this perception that if the Australian government softens its stance towards China, that we will be perceived as weak". The real reason Australia IS weak is because it keeps bending over for the United States interests against its own people's interests. Any intelligent person realizes that the US empire is dissolving because of its evilness and greed and all the while the Chinese economy is booming and it is physically closer to China than the US. Not softens, but switching to a stance of mutual respect is how relationships are preserved and business should be conducted. What each country does internally is THEIR business and should not be discussed at all, no meddling.
