This may be partly because I was raised by my dad, who was mostly unconcerned with gender roles, but I never felt a strong need to behave feminine, nor dress in such a way (tho i usually look(minus the hoodie)/behave somewhat feminine). That shows in my handwriting, which much more closely matches that of a boys.
Really good analysis, I have more info to add! In one of my classes (gender communication), we talked about how young boys and girls develop fine motor skills (like what would be used for writing) at different paces, specifically girls develop them faster than boys. However, this difference is most likely due to social conditioning; chores assigned to young girls and young girl’s play tend to require more fine motor skills than young boy’s chores and play. So, once they’re in school and learning how to write, young girls have better control of their hands and therefore writing, while boys struggle a bit more. Also, teachers often have an unconscious bias and will either be more critical of or spend more time working with young girls with poor handwriting compared to boys (I don’t have sources for this specifically, but teachers reinforcing stereotypes in this manner is a common theme throughout schooling). From this their muscle memory gets almost “stuck” in this time period, and all the gender conditioning gets stuck with it. Idk if any of that makes sense but still really good video!

Not at all...This is utterly and scientifically false. The brain structure differs between males and females. Boys mature physically and cognitively, later than girls because of the difference in sex. Maybe there are minor influences of social conditioning on this matter, however what you are learning in your class is extremely radical and not based in science.

@@jeremiahgonzales4890Bearing in mind we are talking about when kids first start school- i.e before either boys or girls have started puberty. There are no neurological differences between them at this time. Therefore, any differences in behaviour between them must be sociological. However, none of this contradicts what we have currently settled on as tentative “fact.”

@@kiera6326 Hi Kiera. Like I said, I do believe that there are aspects to gender that are socially conditioned...and there are always exceptions in both sexes in boys and girls! However, what you claimed that there are not neurological differences in the brain before puberty is not true. Where did you find this information? Remember that the embyro is affected by the influence of estrogen and testosterone and this determines how the body and brain will differ in the sexes. There are thousands of studies that prove the developmental differences between boys and girls, prepubesent. Learning styles in the school system tends to favor females and boys are generally not cognitively ready for certain learning goals, especially written language during the kindergarten grade for example. This has nothing to do with conditioning and is still seen time and time again even within 2023!
@kiera6326

@@jeremiahgonzales4890 Let me rephrase that- the neurological differences between boys and girls prepubescence are shaped by society. The testosterone influx boys experience in infancy has drained by the time they start school, and won’t appear again until FSH and ICSH are secreted at the beginning of puberty. The purely biological differences are incredibly minor, the least of which being a difference in spatial awareness, which makes boys more active, yes, but not necessarily more hyper, and should technically give them an academic advantage.

This sounds like total nonsense. There are plenty of toys that boys can play with that can be very hands-on, like those that involve moving small pieces, and play dough. There's also hobbies that require fine motor skills like drawing and painting. I used to love drawing and painting as a boy.

This actually makes so much sense for me personally. I have always had a more "boyish" look to my handwriting (more angular, not focusing much on form etc) in the past but when I got into the fifth grade and saw that my handwriting was different from almost all of the girls I, over the time, tried to change the look of my handwriting since it looked "so much prettier". When trying to read off my writing at first alot of girls and other people said it was unintelligible & not pretty and I naturally compared myself to their handwriting. Or when you needed to show the whole class your worksheet I was often emberassed by how my handwriting looked and would try to look up on youtube how to write pretty and neat (the handwriting you would see with alot of girls around me). With time my handwriting shifted to the examples in your video (which was how every girls handwriting looked in school). Now with time away from school it shifted back to how it was back when I didn't care if it didn't look girly and dont care about the social norms of "what a girl should look/be like". Thank you for this video! Made me realise something about myself today (hope my comment is understandable lol)

I've always considered myself a tomboy. When you show the "writing for quickness" examples-- that's my style. Even when I'm writing as nice as possible, my writing looks more like a guy's than a woman's lol. I had a teacher who was talking about handwriting and how some people needed to take more time to make it more legible. He started to name the girls with the handwriting that looks like some of those tiktokers who make aesthetic notes, but he eventually made it around to name every single girl in the class. Not a single guy was named. I am a girl, but let it be known that this was when I was an intense perfectionist, and even then I was at the very end of the list. Now I happen to have a lot more masculine interests like wars, planes, math, engineering, guns, etc. and my handwriting is objectively worse. I think this whole video is ludicrous. I’m a guy and I think men and women can write both equally as good. Unless you write your name, a random person can’t tell the gender of the person who wrote it from your handwriting. As a boy, my handwriting in the past was awful that you can't even understand it. I was jealous of of my classmates handwriting because it was understandable and beautiful ,but in the present, I actually improved my handwriting a by writing one-by-one ,but I do have some issue of writing it properly because my handwriting is unbalanced
It's interesting because I'm a trans guy and while I was/am treated as a "girl" in most places, my mom had made sure to raise my brother and myself without any forced gender roles. As soon as we were old enough to have likes and dislikes we got to choose our hair styles, clothes, toys, etc. Like I had a baby doll when I was little and my brother asked for one too because he wanted to be like me. I had a barbie dress up set and my brother loved wearing the sparkly pink heels and neon pink feather boa scarf around the house (we are 26 snd 23 now and he's a straight, cis-gender male) but we were raised to be who we were. And learning graphology from you, I've noticed that my handwriting falls pretty much in the middle (a bit more towards the "boy" handwriting) because I got to grow up with my handwriting not being influenced by anything except myself.
I mostly agree, but... First of all, "aggression" is bad wording, I think, it's an entirely negative characteristic. I'd change it to "assertivness". Second of all, I wouldn't agree that the characteristics mentioned are a result of social conditioning (at least not on the most part). Looking at averages, of course, masculine and feminine traits come mostly from biological differences. Being a highschool guy myself, I can say that masculine traits, like assertivness and innovative thinking (i.e. coming to a different conclusion than you're taught) are actively suppressed, if not outright punished, far from promoted or taught.
Then there's me who has the handwriting of a doctor writing you a prescription. Part of the reason I often struggled with study in school was that I could hardly read my own notes as the teachers would often fly through their presentations, so I had to just scramble to get down on paper as much of the lecture info as I could. Then I would sometimes have to take extra time to go through and re-write my own notes in slower time to improve their legibility (somewhat anyway).
So, a female army colonel told me, "Men think in hierarchies, women think collaboratively." As a student of both sociology and cognitive science, most of that difference is due to the biology of brain structure, not socialization.
I’ve been watching you for around a year now, and last few months I’ve been diving into grapholgy and I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos and getting me interested in this. You inspire me so much, ily ily 💓💓
I have both 💀 It really just comes down to how much ‘form conscious’ I am. Usually in places such a school where I have to use my brain a lot I prioritise getting the information down. When I’m alone and have time I like to prioritise form for aesthetic purposes. I’m not sure which one is my ‘natural’ handwriting, however the one people see the most is the messy, hieroglyphics I write down.
I’m glad a channel like this exist. It feeds the niche and peaks the curiosity and is insightful to what goes on in an individuals handwriting. I thank you
I was actually told my handwriting couldn't possibly be mind because I had "boy handwriting", and it couldn't possibly have been the writing of a girl because "they have neat handwriting". My print is a bit sloppier and inconsistent because I was taught to write in cursive first, but was forced to stop doing that when I transferred out of homeschool into public school, and this was about two months after I had that transition forced on my because my teacher literally couldn't read cursive and therefore couldn't grade my assignment (he was nearing retirement age too, so it wasn't like this teacher was so young as to not know how cursive works). I'm dyslexic too so it was kind of like learning not only new muscle memory, but learning a different picture for familiar words since letters don't feel like anything except pictures to me. It was only useful ironically when I had to take the SAT test, where you had to write out the vow of academic integrity in cursive, and the people who couldn't write in cursive had to fake it according to the proctor's instructions. It also helped a little bit in learning how to write Arabic since all Arabic is like half-cursive, but that's a different discussion. For those wondering, the reason I was taught to write in cursive is because my mother thought that seeing an entire word would help me more than chopping it up into little letters because of my reading issues, but ironically I started reading better when I learned how to read print because understanding how the blocks worked helped me understand sound more, and that's something that helped me learn English and other languages. I can still write in cursive but I don't do it often unless it's a signature or artistic choice.

I totally agree with your opinion that differences in handwriting are result of the societal conditioning. In my country girls are ofter chastised for having untidy and "boyish" handwriting, while boys are almost expected to have illegible handwriting. In the worst cases girls can even get a lover mark if their handwriting not neat enough.
I’m a woman on the autism spectrum, and I’ve read that autistic women have more “masculine brains”, ie thinking more logically than emotionally/socially, so it would make sense for that to also manifest in handwriting. I have always had a hard time writing neatly, and if I try to it’s really agonizing and slow. Through school and college, I learned to write quickly and efficiently because I prioritized getting as much information down as quickly as possible as opposed to aesthetic.

Writing faster and messier isnt necessarily more logical or less emotional. I write neater so when rereading the notes they can be read easier and faster. Also writing slightly slower and neater engrains the information better rather than mindlessly, so you learn more when you write. Or at least that’s the logic I follow.

This video is very interesting to me. As someone with a complicated relationship with the concept of social performance and the way gender plays into that, along with the fact my handwriting looks like shit (aka not pretty), this sort of helps me understand a few parts of myself better. Got a teacher that absolutely hates my handwriting and calls it "lazy" handwriting (not even gonna get into how that is an excuse to make people with mental/physical health issues feel bad), but it sort of makes me have no motivation during that teacher's classes lmfao Yet this video confirms some of my suspicions as to why my handwriting looks like that. I was *raised to* perform in a feminine role, in theory, but somehow ended up raising myself somewhere in between. Nowadays it's a mix and match of both sides of the social spectrum, but somehow my handwriting mimicks my performance lmfao

Does anyone here know what lower-zone s’ and h’s can indicate? It’s in right-slanted handwriting but usually the drops go really left first before looping back over themselves and ending in a flick just over the middle part of the letter’s width. (Or to the next letter, sometimes.) I can’t find anything on line by going through lower-zone specific pages or letter specific pages.

In the Japanese language, the round and cute hiragana script was historically used by mostly women and, according to an online encyclopedia, it was even known as women's hand back then. ohh I always wondered why my handwriting as a trans guy is actually neat and girly, it always was tbh makes sense to think that it's a social conditioning thing!
I’m a boy with “girly” handwriting and I’ve been wandering forever about this
My handwrting has changed from rounded at about 9 years old onwards to my 30's when it became quite angular; i put a lot of effort into writing and enjoy it. I had to go into the bank to have my signature witnessed because they thought it was a fraud due to the massive sweeps 😂.
Could you make a video on books and resources you used to help learn alongside formal learning? Or maybe a video about your journey learning about handwriting analysis? I'm so interested in the science of graphology but I have no idea where to start! Thanks Leah! (If you actually end up reading this lol)
ur nails look prettyyyyy
Great video! I've always had the feeling that calligraphy tells something about you.
In looking back I could notice a shift in my handwriting. Before my architecture study and subsequent work in the field it was more gentle and rounded. Now it's very fast, angular and more narrow. People often tell me it looks like a man's. I very much attribute it to my work environment, the fact that I had to learn to be assertive and the fact that I was mostly surrounded by men (esp. on the construction site). Technical drawing and writing might have influenced it as well. But I think you're very rigth about the socialization and the influence on gender roles.
recently, I was told that my pen grip was wrong, so I questioned myself: does the way you hold the pen affect the way your real handwriting should look? Interesting video. I love the passion you show in each video for graphology
Is it normal to shift between handwriting styles?
I have a rather unrelated question - How come my handwriting changes from day to day or week to week? I've noticed that on one day I may write like a "boy" so super fast, ignoring the form, quite angular etc and the next day it would be a very cursive version of what you describe as "girl handwriting" in this video (mz dominant, round, well spaced etc". I also figured that it's not necessarily linked to my mood. I think many people get this? Just wanted to know your thoughts regarding this matter and maybe even whether it's a normal thing to happen or not.
it's been a while since i was last able to stumble upon a captivating niche that someone does a fine art of presenting. here i was going "i know this, i've been taught about that, i heard that already", and then one evening it hits me to search about this exact subject and you're the first channel that shows up. gg
How can i have my handwriting analyzed?
Do you know if this applies in cultures/countries where the writing system is entirely different, e.g. using Arabic or Chinese?
I am 40 yo, but you inspire me! There's a lot to learn from you.
You’re so right
My handwriting is always sharp, looks partially like cursive, and I write incredibly fast. I’m pretty sure I have arthritis though, so it hurts to write and my eyesight is bad. Maybe that effects it more than other traits??
That’s funny you drew the opposite conclusion that I did with the gender thing. I thought this was another biological example of differences between girls and boys, not about social conditioning. You notice the differences between boy and girl handwriting as soon as they begin writing at 4 years old.

further evidence that social conditioning starts from the moment you were born...
Lol my family always teases me about my slightly messy handwriting because I focus on speed rather than form, but I've never heard about girl or boy handwriting. I've only ever seen such repeated rounded writing in (North) America and I think giving it a name and attention has perpetuated something as odd as gender differences in handwriting
Your content quality↗️
I used to have a typical boys handwriting. It was unreadable. I actively decided to change it so it was actually legible. I moved to all caps, the form was and is never round more than it has edges, but it's neat and readable. I also write into the midzone, mostly so I'm not touching the lines above and there's a zone between the lines again so it's more readable. But then again my handwriting is very intentional in its form so I can look back at my notes and not be confused.
Before lockdown I had "girl" handwriting I used to write very slowly I was more concerned about how I came across but now I learnt how taking care of myself without caring about what others think about me now I tend to write faster even tho it might not be pleasing to look at but it is atleast understandable.
Started as an analysis and ended into a therapy session / a lesson for society ❤😂
This is a very interesting video. It makes me wonder if this rule still applies back in past centuries or if you can still see the "bubbliness" in on older letters from female writers... or a more angular, aggressive form from male writers.
