WHY Is Bass Fishing So TOXIC?

Спорт

Sometimes it's hard being around people. In fishing you run into folks at the tackle shop, in Social media, at the bank or lined up with 100 other boats ready to launch a tourney. Whether you want to be in this community or not, you're part of it and so are we. We've seen some things over the past few years that we'd like to address. Things that, if we can work on, could make being a part of this community a heck of a lot better. Mostly, it involves not being a jerk. Our goal is to keep fishing fun and a huge part of that is making this a fun place to be.
Let us know some of your worst and your BEST experiences being a part of this community!

The most toxic thing I see as a stream fisherman is people wanting to see your tackle and when they realize I carry nothing but inline spinners I have to get a 10 minute lecture about all the things I “need to be using”. I’m 40 years old I’ve fished a lot of lures/baits, I CHOOSE to use what I use because, I WANT to.

You nailed it guys. I had the pleasure of taking a young man on his first fishing experience a couple of years ago. He was an exchange student who is a friend of my oldest son, both 20. First cast of his life on a wacky rig, a dicey cast at that, almost 2 pounder from the bank on a wacky rig. He had no idea even how to reel it in, but he landed it! The joy on his face when he face timed his parents, and their reaction, I'll never forget. That's what the sport should be about. Appreciate all the knowledge you share, & I wish you happiness going forward!

It's crazy how people judge themselves on how good they are by the size of fish they catch . I have caught one DD bass it was in a farm pond and I have never caught a DD bass since . It's been over 30yrs chasing a New PB Bass. But it didn't make me a better fisherman than anyone else . I love helping others out because if I know what they are hitting on for me I will tell them . The fish aren't mine they belong to whomever owns the water they live in . We as fisher-people need to teach one another to keep the sport growing ...

The only fact or truth I know about fishing is that I sometimes fall into fish, other times I don’t, and I don’t have a clue why. Either way, a day on the water is a good day.

I think the best thing for fishing and in life in general is to try new things and be prepared for new experiences. If your fishing you should be doing it for enjoyment. You may have days that your skunked but you may have great days. If you're not catching try something new, whats the worse that can happen, you still dont catch! The experience and trail and error will teach you about your bodys of water and weather conditions. Just get out there and enjoy.

I use leader sometimes, sometimes not. Certain situations leaders far exceeds straight braid. I agree, you can catch fish either way. Brand loyalty is ridiculous. Some people go out of their way to trash certain brands which work really well. It seems it may have more to do with you promotes their favorite brand vs who is promoting the brand they trash. I have brands I prefer for certain lures or soft baits but it is typically based on my success rates. I have had some of best days fishing using inexpensive soft baits that most “expert” commenters won’t give the time of day. It’s about finding what works for you and if you find something that may help someone else politely/ diplomatically pass it along. Keep the content coming. I really enjoy your videos.

Thank you for addressing the toxic world of bass fishing. Some people today are simply unkind. My Dad shared his thoughts years ago telling me this: “You can never please all the people all the time! So don’t try. Be yourself, be kind, be considerate, do the best job you can and forget the haters.” I’ve added this to his great narrative. “Don’t put up with bullies! For someone who is very new to bass fishing as an actual serious hobby, I have absolutely run into some of these things. For instance I've hunted my whole life! I'm in a few groups here in AZ. If a new guy comes into a Facebook group and says, "hey im a new hunter, was thinking of heading to x area and was wanting to go do some scouting. Anybody who knows that area willing to come out and show me a few things?" As long as you're not just asking for spots or seeming like you are wanting something for nothing then there is always guys who will jump in and be willing to work with and help that guy. On the other hand since I've been the new guy for the first time in a long time starting a new hobby I've noticed a completely different thing in the bass fishing community. There's still some great guys out there no doubt. But the secretiveness is beyond what it is for a prime hunting spot and that's actually where someone will come I and potentially harvest an animal that you are watching and then you will lose a chance to ever harvest that animal. We all catch and release for the most part so yeah not being willing to give any advice or being willing to go with someone and show them some things gas made it tough for me getting started in bass fishing. And the guys at the bait shop will tell you. "There's giants un Canyon lake and everyone that fishes it keeps a super tight lip on where and how they catch their fish". The way I see it is, I'm gonna figure it out one way or the other lol. I just definitely will not be perpetuating that kind of secretive crap to the extent that you are almost being greedy in a way. The second is that I almost got into a fight my second time at a boat ramp launching my kayak. I was in front of a guy towing a boat. I was going to back down the boat ramp right at the entrance side of the ramp, away from the dock itself. So I pull up left preparing to immediately back down to the water almost not clearing the entrance to the ramp because I'm Basically making a 10 second 3 point turn and backing straight down. The guy towing his boat who was riding my A like crazy almost plows into the back of my truck. I'm a super super friendly guy but if you scare me in a way where I also feel like you almost ruined both our days I'm gonna be pretty hot immediately lol. Luckily I think the guy realized his mistake but also that I was mad enough that it definitely could still have ended that day if he hadn't have said "we don't have a problem" lol. But then after of course I end up paddling straigh by them about 30 min later because they just had to rush to the most accessible water on the lake 🤦‍♂️ and I was honestly hoping we could squash it since I'm sure we'll see each other again at that ramp and they would not even turn to look at me. I was like wow 🤦‍♂️ this is definitely different lol. In hunting you're fighting either with words or fists, or you become friends lol. Not a lot of deushy in between like I'm finding in bass fishing lol. Idk maybe the etiquette about how I did what I did was off and he could have told me. It just sucked to have that be my second experience on the ramp when there was literally only the 2 of us on a big ramp and we still had an issue. Too much outta me but that was Definitely some things I've observed so far. I'm sure I'll see the rest soon 😂

There's absolutely no need for the constant shit posting by some people. Fishing is relaxing. It's enjoying the beauty of nature. As a content creator, I'm less concerned with how people do things (leader vs no leader, etc) and more concerned with giving enough info to allow people to make an informed decision. I use leaders only when crappie fishing with slip bobbers, or saltwater fishing with popping corks. Doesn't mean my way is the only way...just means it's how I prefer to do it.

I think the vast majority of dedicated bass anglers tend to forget what they’re doing. You’re fishing. And most are most defiantly not making a living doing it. It’s not rocket science and at the end of the day it doesn’t even have to be specific. I think bass guys are most anal group of fishermen. I think that also has to do with the times we live in. Dudes see these guys on the internet in $100,000 boats loaded to the gills (😬) with high end gear using ultra specific expensive baits and now that’s the only way to do it now. I see it everyday at work. Guys will come in trying to get into bass fishing on a light budget and a bass fishing co-worker will end up trying to sell him $300 Megabass rod, a $300 Zillion reel, $30 braid, and a basket full of $15 baits 😂. Like, dude, they aren’t going for that and you killed the sale immediately. Just put together a decent combo under $100 and sell him some Senko’s, a few jigs/trailers, and a few top water baits. Dude will be a bass catching machine and then he can come back and upgrade his gear in the future. If he even feels the need to. That stuff drives me crazy. Or everyone that walks in is looking to spend $500+ on getting into fishing. From my experience, most folks like to be around $50 mark for a combo but when they realize that isn’t possible unless they are running the lowest quality gear possible, they tend to be more than willing to spend up another $50-$75 to not buy garbage. And that’s for spinning setups. Mention baitcasting and that opens up a whole other can of worms (😬). You don’t need a $500 7’6” heavy baitcasting setup running 50lb braid to get into bass fishing and I think this “high-end or bust” mentality is killing the reason why we all got into fishing in the first place. To have fun. Having said that, I do really enjoy using my high-end application specific gear. But it’s completely unnecessary in almost every angling situation. A setup can only be so light and sensitive and specific and the harsh reality is that the vast minority of anglers don’t even posses the wherewithal to discern the differences from low to high end gear unless that difference is severely drastic. Which, even going from a $15 rod to a $40 rod there is going to be a significant difference. The other thing to consider is that a lot of anglers simply do not care about sensitivity and to a lesser degree, weight. Most of them are just soaking worms anyways. But, that $40 rod is leaps and bounds better than the $15 rod. Same goes for reels, line, baits, and terminal tackle. Most anglers don’t care about that stuff, they just want to get out of it the cheapest way possible. But if they are fishing legally and having fun, who cares. And that goes for the high-end guys too. My entire point to this long ass post is that just because a dude is throwing $15 Whopper Ploppers on $300 combo doesn’t mean that’s the only way to get the job done and that “this is the only way” mentality deters a lot of new anglers into not even trying because all of that stuff is super expensive. And this is all just one aspect of the hobby. You’d be surprised by how many guys don’t buy the rod with the exact specs they’ve been looking just because it says “walleye” on it. And don’t get me started on the guys where color coordinating their combos is the most important aspect of fishing. I’ve sold some very questionable setups due to the colors having to match🤦‍♂️ If you’ve made it this far, thank you for letting me rant about work!

Guys y’all have opinions like we all do. And this is a great video that brings a lot of things to light that this community needs to address and correct within ourselves. I have one request for y’all if you guy can do this. We all know that Shamino and KastKing has BFS gear. And I know y’all kinda mess with BFS some. But it would be nice to see y’all explore different reels and rods in the BFS world. I not asking that y’all drop $250 for a Diawa Gekkibijin. But it would be great to see the more budget friendly side brought to light. And to see the Japanese line diameters talked about and used. Thanks for all you guys do for the community.

I understand, but I will try to explain myself. As a walleye fisherman if you ask someone what they were biting on. You will get a response like jigs and minnows or jig and plastics. While in bass fishing you have jig n pig, swim jigs, banjo minnows, hover rigs, ned rigs, a rigs. All are jigs and it might not be ideal once you understand the concept you can do it all with all whatever you have. As long as you can get to the bottom. Sorry I am being toxic on a video about toxic bass fishing. I only want to enlighten people and give them confidence. I have no financial gains from my opinions

I have seriously grown to love your guys content. One small passive observation I wanted to share is that I notice that when you guys are starting out you like to talk to each other rather than the camera. It seems totally innocent and honestly it gives your content such a genuine feel. However it does also relay a bit of nervousness. I would say a little more for (I'm sorry I don't know your name I looked for it one A is for anonymous) the guy un the teal shirt on the left. In the beginning its usually Grey shirt talking and it appears that you nervously shift your eyes toward him a lot and almost stare at him and not the camera. Again this is not a criticism. Merely an observation. The point I really wanted to get to in writing this comment is that when teal shirt guy lol, 🤦‍♂️ got into this video a bit you hit such an incredible rhythm and were just hammering home your points hard like bam bam bam one after the other not missing a beat. It was seriously awesome to watch. Like I enjoyed you in this content more than I thought I did before when I kinda perceived you as kinda the more nervous quieter one. I was dead wrong on that perception. You guys balance each other extremely well! This is probably one of my more favorite videos you guys have done. Great points! Not to mention most creators content is so chopped up and edited. You guys just go back and forth and never miss a beat and it's practically one take! Super impressive. 🔥💯 Keep bringing this kinda fire guys!!!🙌🔥💯

I've thought about this. There seems to be a disproportionate amount of anger in the fishing community and while I think are a few possibilities, it may be that this sport differs in a major way. There are an unlimited amount of hole in one's that can be made in the golf world, there are not an unlimited amount of bass that can be caught. The more people there are fishing, and the better they are, theoretically the less fish "I" can catch. It may be triggering an evolutionary response

I've noticed during covid, (and it has lingered on afterwards) that alot more people have taken up fishing. Its gotten to the point that at many of my local lakes it is almost impossible to find a spot to fish. When I do find a spot its been so pressured that its almost impossible to catch anything. So in a way I can understand some of the "gatekeeping".

Stopped by my favourite local tackle shop to shoot the shit and just try and get some tips as to where I should look for my best chances at pan fish or trout. I was told straight faced "under the ice". Nice way to treat a regular customer. Needless to say I spend my money else where.

You think fishing is bad, try the surfing community. Super super toxic. The fishing community can be bad though. I had a few run ins with some bad fishing etiquette last year. Both times were panfish anglers. Both of them were boaters who ran right up & fished right next to me. 20-40ft away while I was in my yak. Fishing in the same spot. I could have sent a couple ounce weight through their hull but just moved on instead. Good times.
