why instagram ads suck (anti-haul)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
my instagram ads know what I'm interested in before I do so this is me anti-hauling my instagram & tiktoks ads. I'm sick of scrolling Instagram to learn from & relate to other humans and being bombarded by more sh*t to buy so I hope this series (if you want?) helps you (and me) avoid buying into their tactics.

PPS - I'm working on a video about TEMU next and I am so ANGRY about what I'm finding in my research!

You've really really changed my mindset, Shelby. I used to be in the influencer scene on Instagram and I made the decision to stop doing brand deals, change my username to something closer to my own name instead of the brand I built for myself, and now I am determined to use my platform for activism and my art. I don't want my job to be to sell things to people. Also! I'm an austinite too and you've helped me see what I can do at a local level and I'm really grateful for it.

Hey computer engineer here! They find out things like the first skincare one using data maps. If you put your gps to the doctors office or put their address in your phone, instagram scraps that and then looks at you doctors data map and see they research or posted about selling those brands and then put them in your feed. That’s why apps ask to track your location lol. They also do this with any family members or friends you may be close to or text a lot where their searches and interests will be advertised to you to expand the market as it’s more likely you’ve already heard about the product from the person your close with therefore increasing your likelihood of buying it when it comes up.

Not a response to you pumpkin but for anyone else considering: if you have a clothes iron it probably already has a steam-function. So if you only need the steamer every now and then it might be a good idea to try that first! You can still hang the clothing up and instead of putting the iron to the cloth hover it around the wrinkled parts and press the steamer button.

How do you trust that the steamer will actually work long enough to get your money's worth? I do buy second hand tech, but only if the company has refurbishing programs such as apple, espresso, dyson etc because then it can get repaired or have a warranty

@@emily5802 I think it can depend on your intentions of using it sometimes. In my case, I wasn’t even sure if I was gonna like it or not cause I never used one before and I didn’t have anyone to borrow one from to find out. So that was all the more reason for me to not invest in a new one. But I guess if there’s a product you know for a fact you’re gonna use a lot/for a long time, it might be different.

I got major red flags from Blueland. They were asking me to promote their products to customers in the U.K. They don’t have stockists in this country. They were asking me to encourage people to import cleaning products from the USA. Absolutely not:
Instituting a 7-14 day waiting period really helped me buy less. I don’t let myself buy anything just because I saw an ad for it. I have to wait! Also, I’m not going to ask where your top is from bc it’s not important, but I do want to say that color looks so good on you! You glow!
I’d pay for the app ONCE. I’m not paying any monthly fees. I already hate soooo many places have a month sub now. It’s ridiculous. Also your not alone. For me it’s not the ads, it’s the regular people. I see so many people decorating for fall by BUY all new things. It makes me so sad and mad. No hate on them but it’s definitely part of our culture. And I hate it.
You know what the worst part is... I'm halfway through this anti-consumerism video and I feel the urge to buy something 😭 this whole system is messing up our brains, but at least you give me the awareness to identify it and hopefully make it easier to resist
I’d love to see an entire video dedicated to TikTok shop. Almost every single video is an ad or something with a link to TikTok shop and they even added a shop tab! It honestly feels like the new Amazon.

Pretty sure The Barbie Movie was made for preteens/teens. Maybe because I was literally sitting next some teens in the theater. During the "brewsky beer" scene, one turns to her friends and asks "Is this movie sponsored?" Sweetie, yes it's heavily sponsored, but "brewsky beer" isn't real. 😂
Just found your channel! Love your anti consumerism content. I haven't seen much of your stuff so you might have talked about it before, but for me insta and TikTok advertising also makes me feel compelled to try to monetize all my hobbies. Instagram is SO tempting. I only ever go on there to chat with friends that don't have WhatsApp but then I start scrolling and get ads for sustainable underwear, period panties, brands with circular packaging etc. I'd definitely be down for a new deinfluencing/anti-haul series (the difference between the 2 for me is that deinfluencing seems to primarily describe influencer sponsorships whereas anti-haul sounds like giving stuff away or smt, deinfluencing does seem more apt for the times)
I LOVE the direction you're taking! You disseminate info in an accessible way and this message is so needed for every average person. We don't need all this shit!
instagram is so curated. i used to never click ads but during the pandemic I started to. my ads are creepy accurate. even when it's not a product I get home workouts designed by people from cirque du soleil which is right up my alley. Instagram ads are very on the nose on what's relevant to me and even the colours and styles of things... I lack the same willpower as you since my trauma was very much not buying or spending money on anything up until i moved out (during the pandemic). i'm trying to find that balance but I like that a lot of my ads are more services than products. I noticed they have advertised they are the first to sell toilet cleaning tabs....This is not true. I have been buying a toilet cleaning tab from Marilla's Mindful supplies for awhile now. And they deleted my comment on the post I saw on fb.
If instagram would let me pay $10/mo for no ads they would have my money so fast.
I bought from Parade recently because I needed a new bra and I was getting a ton of ads from them. My total purchase was a bra and 3 pairs of panties, I even paid shipping instead of hitting the spending target to qualify for "free delivery." What confused me on their website is this part in fabric details "made with certified recycled fabric for everyday from the softest recycled yarns." Okay, but what kind of yarns? Needless to say, everything is synthetic and I'm sweating a lot in their underwear. I wonder if it can double as a swimsuit, otherwise I'm saving it for winter.
Oh god, my phone is always listening to me. My ads are insanely targeted.
Please do a video on Parade. I bought some stuff from them because they did seem affordable and sustainable and I can’t thrift undies. Their stuff is nice, but I do always wonder if they’re too good to be true.
My feed is maybe 2-3 posts made by people I'm actually following, then recommended posts, ads, random sponsored posts from people I'm *not* following, and loads of "hey you need to buy this". I am a content creator, I do the occasional sponsorship and collaboration, but watching this is just absolutely eye opening to how social media has basically altered itself to online shopping.
I'm extra annoyed by ads recently because my OCD has given me severe money anxiety and I won't purchase stuff online unless I need it, and even then it's second hand *cough* college textbooks. But I need to complain for a quick second. Maybe a bit too personal but what I would giiiiive to be able to opt out of menstruation product ads. I use reusable products. I don't need more reusable products. The way I have to hear Amy Schumer talk to me about tampax no matter how many times I say I'm not interested, I don't care, I don't want it, kills my soul.
I reeeaally needed this video now. I have also been overwhelmed by the big consumption trend as well, and there's so many things I have needed to talk myself out of buying. I have bought some stuff, but I always ask myself if this is something I still gonna use in 3 years before buying. Still, my consumption is way to big and I keep thinking about all the things I could buy and all the things I am still talking myself from buying. Having videos like this is a big support and reminder of an ethical/mindful consumption. If you like making these videos, please continue. Not only are they really needed, but you make them very entertaining as well.
I spend just as much time hiding adverts on social media as actually watching what I want to! As a 52 year old I'm not as influenced by adverts as much anymore......I literally don't need it!! Thanks for this video, very helpful xx
Honestly, when I need something it goes on the specific Google Doc, I find it online or in a store, I buy it, and that's that. There's no way an ad can be enticing to me cause if it's not on the list, it means I don't need it.

It is so hard to try to be sustainable or to not buy things when it is constantly being advertised to me all day everyday. Thanks for keeping me accountable!!!!!
thank god, a person who also wasn't wowed by the Barbie movie, and yes, it is indeed overhyped. this is a topic for another video!
Damn, you rock! It’s beautiful to find actual content created by a genuine person with a purpose (other than fame and making money). Thank you for motivating and inspiring towards a more efficient way to communicate sustainability to others (I get all passionate and aggressive about it) ❤
it's always a good day when shelby posts!
Your videos are always so interesting and leave me thinking about them long after watching Shelby. I've been a big consumer in the past and trying to change my ways, your videos are really helping! I would love a video in what to do instead of spending/when you feel the urge to spend- I know this sounds a bit silly but I think it would be useful for a lot of us who have/had speaking as an activity or 'hobby' ❤
I like how you mention using a waiting period to decide if you really want something!! Letting things sit in my online shopping cart for a few days has saved me a ton of money by making me realize I can totally live without those things! Especially if I forget that it’s there 😂
I remember reading an article a few years ago that mentioned that on Instagram specifically, the ratio of ads to actual posts was 1:3/4. So for every 3 (sometimes 4) posts from people you follow there will be an ad on the next. And repeat. I noticed that on your example and I have noticed that about my feed for years.
LOVVVEEEE THIS AND YOU thank you for the reminders and motivation
My ads on Instagram is a complete mess of really unrelated things to me cause I visit it like once a month and they have no idea what I like 😂
I was scrolling through Pinterest the other day and there was a SUPER insideous ad. There was a pin for a shirt (not my style in any way) and directly underneath that pin there was a Temu ad for a very very similar shirt. It felt super gross.
I love watching your channel as i’m knitting my own clothes!
Love the video! Thank you for always reminding us not to succumb to consumerism. I'm pretty lucky to not get many targeted ads, neither on insta or tt, and even if they look nice and colourful, they are just...so annoying! another reason not to buy
The new butterfly is beautiful!!! I love the placement
This is totally the reminder I needed to spend less time on Instagram!! I was wondering why I'd been feeling like the answer to all my problems is to buy more clothes.... Imma go set some app timers now. 😂 Thank you!!!
im a micro influencer or "i was" at first it was fun but social media ads and the whole influence thing made me mentally unstable. i stopped promoting stuffs ./ sometimes i do want to show ppl what i got but not because i want to earn something but like hey guys u would like this, based on hobbies or fashion taste. instagram made me so SICK, i changed it as a personal blog. keep in private what i buy and i show it in my photos they would be there but not mentioned. im trying to use the app for making stories but use it on the pc to avoid ads ;). its too sick to see ads every 1-2 posts. i hope i can become a real/better "influence" by doing things that can literal help ppl and not accumulate stuff just because its cute.. :(

The tik tok tank dress, I got the same one for rue 21 years ago too!
There's literally countless things I've added to my online cart, put down my phone, and deleted the tab in Chrome 5 days later. Waiting a couple of days before purchasing works.
Your explanation of what goes through your mind when you see an ad helps me better analyze my own thought processes, too. I definitely feel more prepared to be a conscious consumer. Thanks for another amazing video :) Also, I wish sustainability was as simple and easy as "plastic = bad"! I'm trying my best to let go of the idea that an item's end-of-life is the most important factor in its sustainability. I understand the importance of using what I have, buying secondhand, supporting the local economy, eating plant-based, choosing in-season foods, and checking that production was ethical ... but I still feel lost, like I should be doing more, so I'm about to re-watch some of your older videos. Anyway, I've loved your channel for years and I'm so glad the world has you. 💚💚💚 To anyone who took the time to read all of this, I hope you're having a lovely day.
I don't want to jinx it but I basically never get ads on instagram, I'm wondering if it is because of my location? if this is like an US problem? This is really mind blowing
Honestly, it's part of why I use social media less and less. Deleted tumblr because I was tired of the horrible ui and the ads. Deleted insight timer because they sell data for advertisers and it feels abusive. Very close to deactivating fb and just using messenger. I'm only on twitter and ig at this point but I HATE the ads. We live in Black Mirror...
When I’m going to gift shops with museums and zoos, I don’t feel the need to buy anything. It’s the same with mall stores and toy stores.
I am definitely past the ads thanks to you and your content Shelbi! However... I am a sucker for buying things second hand on instagram. I don't want to unfollow the pages so now I am scrolling past stories. The day before this video came out I bought a second hand pair of moon studs 🙊. That dress is all over my TT as well--I think it's just super trending and super pushed. I'm also over having so many targeted ads trying to hook me in, but even more over all the TT shop vids it keeps pushing. Even if it's content I like, it IMMEDIATELY puts me off. 😢
I really liked this video and I would love to see more about how brands can do better. I am not going to lie, I've never watched your antihaul video on Trader Joe's. I shop there a lot, mostly because our store is close enough to my house to walk, and my daughter (who has a muscular disease) is able to walk around the small store. And I have always been afraid that your video will say not to shop there. They obviously have their problems (like waaaay too much plastic), but it works so well for my family. I would like to see more videos calling out brands and companies for bad marketing. Also, I absolutely agree, we need to stop shopping and buying things!
I really appreciate all you do, Shelby
i see anti-hauling & deinfluencing as pretty much the same thing. though i think of it as "anti-hauling" is more going through specific things you won't buy (mainly in video formate), while deinfluencing feels like it's covering a bit more ground and can be done in more ways (like in text, speaking more generally and promoting not buying stuff or buying secondhand, making people think about consumerism in general etc)
that little cloud phone holder thingy is so cute tho 🥺 my phone holder ring thingy broke and now pondering if I need new or if I'll be fine...there's a chance that I will drop my phone...a lot
you deinfluenced me from buying a new pair of swimmers for the summer! thank you!
i’m all the way at the end of this spectrum, i really dislike social media in general. i’d recommend the documentary the social dilemma. it’s really scary honestly, they really don’t care about your well being and just want to exploit you as much as possible :/ all social media is now is ads on every platform, and when you see posts that are actually people you follow and not recommendations, a lot of it is fake anyways. (i miss when early social media was just meant to check in with people you know and not something you spent much time on)
Listen, I will take as many reminders to stop buying shit as I can get. I want to behave in ways that align with my values, but I'm not immune to advertising and wanting that quick dopamine hit either. I hate ads so much.
I haven’t even seen the Barbie movie but PLEASE do a review on it I feel like that would get a lot of people to watch the video + be introduced to anti capitalism etc.
😅 The roast on Barbie, loved it haha. I like this style of content. I work with one other person in the office and I appreciate the rants. I also stopped using IG because of ads and prefer tiktok to connect with people. I'm trying to pay off debt so the ads are hard to escape but I have to remind myself, " I don't need this!" I've adopted a wait a buy mindset and has worked wonders.

To be blunt, the producers allowed a talented director to make a vaguely feminist barbie movie because it would strum up press and allow for Mattel to make their brand marketable to adults (who drag their kids to these movies). And they're super open about it.. with the success of the Barbie movie, Mattel has announced 45 movies related to their IPs, including Polly Pocket, Hot Wheels, Uno, He-Man, She-Ra, Rock Em Sock Em Robotos, American Girl Dolls, etc. Its just one big commercial sadly.
I super relate to not wanting to buy things that have been on my wish list for awhile because suddenly the internet wants me to have it. I’ve had my eyes on a Stanley cup for months and months- maybe a year or so tbh. About 3 or 4 months ago they became the tiktok girlie cup and everywhere started selling out of them/ people started reselling for ridiculous prices. So I just sit here with my yeti that’s too big for my cup holder/everyday life and dig my heels in. 😅
Please do a video on Parade! They drive me crazy with their constant new releases and cleverly rebranded synthetic materials.
Love the video! Me personally though, I would never pay money just to not have adds, especially monthly or on a regular basis. I am pretty poor and have been most of my life so I don’t buy stuff because I simply can’t, ads or no ads. It’s been years and I can’t buy the stuff I need that others consider “essentials.” So even though now I have more disposable income and things are looking up I can’t even imagine paying money for something like this, simply because of my mindset over the years. No judgement to you personally, just sharing my perspective.
You’re talking about Ego Depletion! We’re shown so many targeted adds that the part of us that says “No, I shouldn’t”, is worn down over time until we give in.
Can’t wait for the TEMU video especially coming from someone like Shelby who has been in the sustainability genre for a long time
Shelby omg this brands are so so insidious... I never never buy anything from an ad. Honestly the main factor is the money. Im a full time student living on my own I work. I dont have very if not any "shopping money". However when you talked about the dress it reminded me of the viral halara dress I'm sure they burned it into my psychic and now I'm convinced I need it. Ive been thinking about it for months but i dont think I would if I had not seen those ads everyday for such a long time....
Hi ! Thank you for this lovely and very necessary video ! I don't really have any social media (no Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook) and this reminds me why they wouldn't be a great fit for me :) ! Though, I have to admit that KZread ads/sponsorships can sometimes be quite tiring as well. Obviously, I really want to support the creators I follow (including on Patreon/by not skipping ads etc...) and I would never chastise them for just trying to find a source of income, but I really do struggle to find a lot of the ad reads authentic or pleasant to listen through. It doesn't really help that a lot of them are very similar (for Squarespace, Nord VPN, HelloFresh etc...) so it feels like you're being told the same thing over and over. By the way, the channel VerilyBitchie has made a video on Barbie called "The Plastic feminism of Barbie", exploring how Mattel was very involved in the movie and used it as a big budget ad, while refusing to address the fact that the brand is completely uninterested in sustainability and fair labour. So, you're not the only one having a bit of a mixed reaction ! Love love ! 😘
Why I kind of stopped with social media for a little while! This woman doesn't need the temptation!
Agree with you on the Barbie movie! 😁 I'd love to watch a full Shelby rant!
I feel like this mindset has expanded into in person interactions. The standard response to "i like your top" used to be "hah, this old thing, ive had it forever" or maybe "thanks, its new!" But now it's socrazy to see how often even my eco conscious friends say "it's from SHEIN, I'll text you the link!" People are inadvertently being ads now. I can't believe it.
They work! I can think of two items (albeit sustainable items i didnt have another equivalent of) I have bought from instagram. I studied digital marketing and still somehow was fooled. I agree w your barbie take. I love barbie, the movies and yeah the whole thing, but the new movie…it just had a very weird conclusion. Who was it made for? Not me and I love barbie. KZread works too. Too many videos are indirectly selling stuff to you (testing a product included) Also, im conflicted, im mad at the shaving ads i keep getting but also i will never buy it so i feel …like i’m winning? But also i dont need the shame
Shelby, can you please talk about Blueland and what you referred to in the video? I just got all of their different cleaning bottles off of my buy nothing and I was going to start buying their tablets.
I may be wrong, but isn't there a way in app settings to turn off targeted ads? Like you'll still have adds, but they supposedly won't be targeted towards you, just random ads. Or is that working just in EU
I feel like I see more ads than posts from people I follow. I hate it!! 🙄 and same Barbie was underwhelming for sure
Would LOVE to hear more about Parade- I see them all over all the time, with new collections all the time, and I’m not entirely sure how sustainable they actually are
😅 The sheer amount of ads that have been tucked into every moment of our daily lives is why I'm considering setting up a pi-hole on my network. If I have to see them everywhere I go, I might as well have as much of a slice of peace at home as I can! It's a process I'm still trying to understand, so not in the works quite yet. But there are ways to even reuse "unusable" tech to be able to run it. :)

What’s a pi-hole?
I’m so happy you felt the same way about Barbie!! I felt so alone, the movie actually made me kinda mad lol
Girl YESSSSS about the Barbie movie !!!!
I quit social media because I just felt "full." Scrolling on Facebook every day felt like hovering over a table after I had finished eating. I was so sick of reading the "spiritual" posts made by people who were adding me as a friend... they were always looking for new "clients." I'll never charge or pay for the conversations i have with my peers: I'm not a guru or a client. Im glad i had the discipline to avoid the other platforms because I would have encountered the same burnout while watching influencers. I can imagine that I'd feel the same way.
...and then she came for the Barbie movie, and she was never heard from again. LoL!!! Shelby I frickin' LOVE you. Out here modeling critical thinking skills all over the damned place. ❤💪💪
Around 95% of my targeted ads are blueland, native, and who gives a crap. At this point I'd welcome different ads just to have something new to watch 😂. But I don't know if it's just how I am or the marketing degrees I have, but my brain doesn't work like you're describing. Like, I don't care if my clothes aren't caught up to what's trending and I don't get bored with wearing the same stuff, for example. These ads don't stick in my brain like that, even if it's something I am interested in. Unless it's weirdly specific to something I need, I won't bite.
i keep getting ads on KZread for stores i already shop, specifically Who Gives a Crap (toilet paper) and Thrift Books. I guess it's better than being exposed to those targeted ads but it seems like a waste of advertising money since im already a customer.
I popped into IG and realized my feed was just a cycle of 3 posts: things i follow, suggested, and ad. Over and over.
