why instagram ads suck (anti-haul)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

my instagram ads know what I'm interested in before I do so this is me anti-hauling my instagram & tiktoks ads. I'm sick of scrolling Instagram to learn from & relate to other humans and being bombarded by more sh*t to buy so I hope this series (if you want?) helps you (and me) avoid buying into their tactics.

PS - if you're reading this comment & tell me if you think the newish term "deinfluencing" is the same thing as an "anti-haul".. I'm pretty sure it is but ya know there's a new generation on these here internets and I just want to make sure I'm keepin up with the times lol
PPS - I'm working on a video about TEMU next and I am so ANGRY about what I'm finding in my research!

You've really really changed my mindset, Shelby. I used to be in the influencer scene on Instagram and I made the decision to stop doing brand deals, change my username to something closer to my own name instead of the brand I built for myself, and now I am determined to use my platform for activism and my art. I don't want my job to be to sell things to people. Also! I'm an austinite too and you've helped me see what I can do at a local level and I'm really grateful for it.

Hundreds and hundreds of garbage bags full. Lots of people picked back up stuff though! Happy to see college students embracing thrifted goods

Hey computer engineer here! They find out things like the first skincare one using data maps. If you put your gps to the doctors office or put their address in your phone, instagram scraps that and then looks at you doctors data map and see they research or posted about selling those brands and then put them in your feed. That’s why apps ask to track your location lol. They also do this with any family members or friends you may be close to or text a lot where their searches and interests will be advertised to you to expand the market as it’s more likely you’ve already heard about the product from the person your close with therefore increasing your likelihood of buying it when it comes up.

Not a response to you pumpkin but for anyone else considering: if you have a clothes iron it probably already has a steam-function. So if you only need the steamer every now and then it might be a good idea to try that first! You can still hang the clothing up and instead of putting the iron to the cloth hover it around the wrinkled parts and press the steamer button.

I only ever go on there to chat with friends that don't have WhatsApp but then I start scrolling and get ads for sustainable underwear, period panties, brands with circular packaging etc. I'd definitely be down for a new deinfluencing/anti-haul series (the difference between the 2 for me is that deinfluencing seems to primarily describe influencer sponsorships whereas anti-haul sounds like giving stuff away or smt, deinfluencing does seem more apt for the times)

Instagram ads are very on the nose on what's relevant to me and even the colours and styles of things... I lack the same willpower as you since my trauma was very much not buying or spending money on anything up until i moved out (during the pandemic). i'm trying to find that balance but I like that a lot of my ads are more services than products. I bought from Parade recently because I needed a new bra and I was getting a ton of ads from them. My total purchase was a bra and 3 pairs of panties, I even paid shipping instead of hitting the spending target to qualify for "free delivery." What confused me on their website is this part in fabric details "made with certified recycled fabric for everyday from the softest recycled yarns." Okay, but what kind of yarns? Needless to say, everything is synthetic and I'm sweating a lot in their underwear. I wonder if it can double as a swimsuit, otherwise I'm saving it for winter.

But I need to complain for a quick second. Maybe a bit too personal but what I would giiiiive to be able to opt out of menstruation product ads. I use reusable products. I don't need more reusable products. The way I have to hear Amy Schumer talk to me about tampax no matter how many times I say I'm not interested, I don't care, I don't want it, kills my soul.

I have bought some stuff, but I always ask myself if this is something I still gonna use in 3 years before buying. Still, my consumption is way to big and I keep thinking about all the things I could buy and all the things I am still talking myself from buying. I'm trying my best to let go of the idea that an item's end-of-life is the most important factor in its sustainability. I am definitely past the ads thanks to you and your content Shelbi! However... I am a sucker for buying things second hand on instagram. I don't want to unfollow the pages so now I am scrolling past stories. The day before this video came out I bought a second hand pair of moon studs 🙊. One can be a second hand over consumer and I have to watch myself!

That dress is all over my TT as well--I think it's just super trending and super pushed. I'm also over having so many targeted ads trying to hook me in, but even more over all the TT shop vids it keeps pushing. Even if it's content I like, it IMMEDIATELY puts me off. 😢

I really liked this video and I would love to see more about how brands can do better. I am not going to lie, I've never watched your antihaul video on Trader Joe's. I shop there a lot, mostly because our store is close enough to my house to walk, and my daughter (who has a muscular disease) is able to walk around the small store. And I have always been afraid that your video will say not to shop there. They obviously have their problems (like waaaay too much plastic), but it works so well for my family. I would like to see more videos calling out brands and companies for bad marketing. Also, I absolutely agree, we need to stop shopping and buying things!

i see anti-hauling & deinfluencing as pretty much the same thing. though i think of it as "anti-hauling" is more going through specific things you won't buy (mainly in video formate), while deinfluencing feels like it's covering a bit more ground and can be done in more ways (like in text, speaking more generally and promoting not buying stuff or buying secondhand, making people think about consumerism in general etc)

i’m all the way at the end of this spectrum, i really dislike social media in general. i’d recommend the documentary the social dilemma. it’s really scary honestly, they really don’t care about your well being and just want to exploit you as much as possible :/ all social media is now is ads on every platform, and when you see posts that are actually people you follow and not recommendations, a lot of it is fake anyways. (i miss when early social media was just meant to check in with people you know and not something you spent much time on)

I also stopped using IG because of ads and prefer tiktok to connect with people. I'm trying to pay off debt so the ads are hard to escape but I have to remind myself, " I don't need this!" I've adopted a wait a buy mindset and has worked wonders.

I can understand some downsides and talking points but I really thought it was super funny and took it as more of a feminist approach. Granted it could've touched more on other topics within feminism. I wasn't really focusing on the capitalism part of it as much and I'm super curious to hear what you think.

To be blunt, the producers allowed a talented director to make a vaguely feminist barbie movie because it would strum up press and allow for Mattel to make their brand marketable to adults (who drag their kids to these movies). And they're super open about it.. with the success of the Barbie movie, Mattel has announced 45 movies related to their IPs, including Polly Pocket, Hot Wheels, Uno, He-Man, She-Ra, Rock Em Sock Em Robotos, American Girl Dolls, etc. Its just one big commercial sadly.

I super relate to not wanting to buy things that have been on my wish list for awhile because suddenly the internet wants me to have it. I’ve had my eyes on a Stanley cup for months and months- maybe a year or so tbh. About 3 or 4 months ago they became the tiktok girlie cup and everywhere started selling out of them/ people started reselling for ridiculous prices. So I just sit here with my yeti that’s too big for my cup holder/everyday life and dig my heels in. 😅

Love the video! Me personally though, I would never pay money just to not have adds, especially monthly or on a regular basis. I am pretty poor and have been most of my life so I don’t buy stuff because I simply can’t, ads or no ads. It’s been years and I can’t buy the stuff I need that others consider “essentials.” So even though now I have more disposable income and things are looking up I can’t even imagine paying money for something like this, simply because of my mindset over the years. No judgement to you personally, just sharing my perspective.

Hi ! Thank you for this lovely and very necessary video ! I don't really have any social media (no Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook) and this reminds me why they wouldn't be a great fit for me :) ! Though, I have to admit that KZread ads/sponsorships can sometimes be quite tiring as well. Obviously, I really want to support the creators I follow (including on Patreon/by not skipping ads etc...) and I would never chastise them for just trying to find a source of income, but I really do struggle to find a lot of the ad reads authentic or pleasant to listen through. It doesn't really help that a lot of them are very similar (for Squarespace, Nord VPN, HelloFresh etc...) so it feels like you're being told the same thing over and over. By the way, the channel VerilyBitchie has made a video on Barbie called "The Plastic feminism of Barbie", exploring how Mattel was very involved in the movie and used it as a big budget ad, while refusing to address the fact that the brand is completely uninterested in sustainability and fair labour. So, you're not the only one having a bit of a mixed reaction ! Love love ! 😘

I feel like this mindset has expanded into in person interactions. The standard response to "i like your top" used to be "hah, this old thing, ive had it forever" or maybe "thanks, its new!" But now it's socrazy to see how often even my eco conscious friends say "it's from SHEIN, I'll text you the link!" People are inadvertently being ads now. I can't believe it.

I agree w your barbie take. I love barbie, the movies and yeah the whole thing, but the new movie…it just had a very weird conclusion. Who was it made for? Not me and I love barbie. KZread works too. Too many videos are indirectly selling stuff to you (testing a product included) Also, im conflicted, im mad at the shaving ads i keep getting but also i will never buy it so i feel …like i’m winning? 😅 The sheer amount of ads that have been tucked into every moment of our daily lives is why I'm considering setting up a pi-hole on my network. If I have to see them everywhere I go, I might as well have as much of a slice of peace at home as I can! It's a process I'm still trying to understand, so not in the works quite yet. But there are ways to even reuse "unusable" tech to be able to run it. :)

I was so sick of reading the "spiritual" posts made by people who were adding me as a friend... they were always looking for new "clients." I'll never charge or pay for the conversations i have with my peers: I'm not a guru or a client. Around 95% of my targeted ads are blueland, native, and who gives a crap. At this point I'd welcome different ads just to have something new to watch 😂. But I don't know if it's just how I am or the marketing degrees I have, but my brain doesn't work like you're describing. Like, I don't care if my clothes aren't caught up to what's trending and I don't get bored with wearing the same stuff, for example. These ads don't stick in my brain like that, even if it's something I am interested in. Unless it's weirdly specific to something I need, I won't bite.
