Why 'Inside Out 2' WORKED and 'Turning Red' FAILED

Фильм және анимация

'Turning Red' was met with some backlash before and after the movie was released on Disney+ but what happens when a movie (Inside Out 2) 3 years later does everything it intended to do but much better?

I have to disagree with you on Turning Red. Mei's Red Panda is partially about puberty yes, but the bigger aspect of it is more a sense of self and all the more wild and "untamed" parts of her personality. Her rage, her attraction to boys, her sadness, her fears, all of that culminates into her panda. Where the puberty comes in is how alot of young people, especially young girls, can feel like a big, gross monster during puberty with things like periods, body hair, body odor, and the like as things change. The reason why it only happens to Mei is solely because she's the main character, but I think you're being a bit unfair to Turning Red in your interpretation of the movie. The story tackles puberty yes, but the main arc revolves around Mei growing up to be a more flawed and independent person outside of her mother's wishes, and the struggle that can come with that.

Yeah my thought too, I never related the panda to puberty when I saw it, and the period scenes are just jokes, meaning how the mom embarrasses her at school (not period shame but like teenager embarrassment) and also it's really relatable for ppl with Asian background and the family relationships etc.

Turning Red isn't about puberty, not really. It's about a very specific time in recent history, and a very specific culture and yes very specific experience and most of all, about the challenges that occur negotiating between the current western culture and the eastern culture that came before. Puberty and menstruation isn't the point. That's part of the joke; she's not having her period, and likely won't for a year or two yet. But she is growing up and starting to separate from her parents, from being the perfect daughter, starting to want things that her mother doesn't want...like going to a concert with her friends. Not everyone comes from an immigrant family; but many more come from families where they as individuals don't and/or stop fitting in. The red panda makes perfect sense as a guardian or totem animal, because it is a lot more active even aggressive, compared to the Giant Panda. The family guardian spirit is able to protect against violent forces, but in a western civilization, allowing the red panda out would be seen as a disaster, alienating the dominant culture, and taking away from image of the model minority. So, trapping the panda is a way of fitting in and not being outcast, both within the new culture and being obedient towards the elders who know best. We don't know specifically what compromises that Grandma needed to make, but as each daughter came of age, the panda was contained, for the good of the family. Then Mei's mom wanted to get married to a good man who wasn't good enough...and Mom's panda broke loose, literally villain scarring her mother for life. Mom gets her way, but the panda is imprisoned. So now, Mom is absolutely determined to have her baby tow the line...no matter that her entire history teaches the opposite! Why I say this isn't a puberty story, is that coming of age tales normally don't go into those physical and emotional changes, but they do involve separating from family and the old ways, and sometimes making your way back to family, but on one's own terms. Because it was different and yes, very specific to people and a demographic and even a country (can you think of any recent story that is even tangentially about Canada?) that doesn't get told much or often, the Chinese-Canadian director created a fantasy that harkened back to her growing up and apart from her family. As half-Chinese myself, I related to this film, but I didn't love it, in fact I was angrily enjoying it the entire time, until Mei was able to get Mom to reconcile to her past and her mother, then I could let some of the anger go too. That's great movie making. I do see your point that Riley's life is more accessible to a wider audience, but that doesn't mean it's not just as important to tell tales from other points of view, because if you give it a chance, it may speak to you too.

yes yes yes yes yes yes yes (above is my reaction to pretty much every point the further i scrolled) It’s very difficult as a child of a person raised so conservatively in her home country. moving to canada, shes changed enough to be considered progressive in korea, but still not much so here. clashing with her beliefs is still incredibly difficult and i’m tired of having to hide. with my asian friends and coworkers this is (or was, after they moved away) a nearly universal experience. all i can do is sigh when i hear reviews from people that didnt live through experiences like this say things that prove they missed the point to any degree. when people say stuff like “why is mei-lings mom so unrealistically insane” i immediately lose respect in the review, they havent gone as far as to understand our side of the world and will continue to view us and our living situations as miniscule.

Every time I hear someone talk badly about Turning Red, it's always about how the metaphor for puberty doesn't work. Don't get me wrong, I hate the movie for other reasons, but they make it very clear that the red panda represents the parts of ourselves that we don't like, might be ashamed of, or in general feel like we need to hide. It's hard for me to believe that it has anything to do with periods, because the mom makes it very clear that periods and the red panda are two separate things. Why would the movie separate those things purposely if one were meant to represent the other? The message was clearly "You should accept all parts of yourself" and NOT "puberty is messy". I do think "You should accept all parts of yourself" is also the message of Inside Out 2, and I do think Inside Out 2 does it better, but I'd love to someday hear a genuine review of Turning Red WITHOUT shoving metaphors into the red panda.

i feel like the only thing i really appreciated and related to from inside out 2 was probably the fact that they annotated the existence of Canada/Toronto and made it so for once a movie didn't take place in the us , I felt really appreciated since I'm from Canada living near Toronto. and the second thing I related to was mai at the beginning of the movie being an overachiever and getting good grades. with is what I really care about a lot but I hate how they kind of made it so that she slowly stoped caring about her grades. meanwhile inside out to I really connected with Riely over her feelings and her desire to just be good for others or just be good enough fro myself. and also the fact that she had to move somewhere new where she didn't know anyone plot of the first movie.

  • @Lucien_M

Other people have said it, but Turning Red isn't a metaphor for periods. The scene where Ming assumes that Mei is talking about her period when she describes herself as a "big red monster" is supposed to be a joke about Ming misinterpreting her. There's even a later scene where Ming realises what Mei really meant, and the solutions Ming gives to the red panda are different from the advice she gives about periods. Maybe this part being easily misinterpreted means that the writing on the movie wasn't that good or was muddled, especially since the red panda wasn't always going to be exclusive to women in the family. Anyways, I agree that the red panda metaphor is definitely muddled. It's supposed to be something that all adolescents get but choose to get rid of by the time that they're adults(like strong emotions or cringiness), but the panda being sealed isn't permanent. Or how Mei transforms into this big red panda, and doing it too much might make her too strong(i.e. rebellion, strong emotions) except when she selects parts of her body to transform instead of the full red panda.

Watching Inside Out 2 was an emotional experience for me and the most relatable movie. It depicted anxiety and other emotions so accurately, especially in the context of going through puberty and dealing with new emotions. One of the aspects I related to most was the fear of rejection or standing out. I was so desperate to be accepted by the people around me and was afraid of being cast away or forgotten. The movie perfectly captures these feelings, showing how overwhelming and isolating they can be. It also reminded me that these emotions are a natural part of growing up, and it's okay to feel them. I don't know if I'm the only one but Inside Out 2 cured my problems with anxiety because after watching the movie I feel less anxious around people, I can freely enjoy life and feel much safer dealing with people. Note: I don't care what anyone says, I'm putting this movie number 1 on my favorite movie list :)

I thought that both movies were great in their own right. For me, I really liked the inspiration that Turning Red took from anime for one. And I'm not really that into any anime show, rather I find the style aestetically pleasing. I also think there are plenty of relatable elements in Turning Red that don't have anything to do with periods: the helicopter parenting, the high expectations placed on a child by their parent(s), the mom overreacting and thinking it necessary to create a huge spectacle over certain matters causing her daughter a lot of humiliation, Mei just wanting to have an experience with friends that is almost deemed a rite of passage, the list goes on. The fact that Turning Red was a passion project by the director makes it that much better for me. Now, I don't need to say much about Inside Out 2 other than I really liked the movie, but my only concern is that Disney/Pixar will take some of the wrong lessons from it and discourage people developing original ideas for the studio in favor of milking old franchises all to seem more relatable. Just a thought I had.

I think more than anything the Panda doesn’t represent puberty (I think it is a symptom tho) the panda represents generational trauma. I also read somewhere that the panda could also represent the disconnect between parent and child but I personally don’t believe that one. At many points I could see myself in Riley’s shoes, almost tearing up at those points (and I did tear up at the end). By leaving out periods and making it the basis of puberty, it makes it relatable to females as well as males like myself, which I think we all can agree was the best decision they made for this movie.

I feel as a Turning Red fan...I personally enjoyed the movie but I can understand people may not like Turning Red for personal reasons and reasonable points. Turning Red is for girls mostly and also Asian families or people with family issues. If you cannot get used to Turning Red's comedy, the drama and how the animation is like I understand that. I am not a Chinese American, but I can relate to Mei Mei. I could understand the Red Panda feels ridiculous, but I could see that as a symbolism with Mei growing up and puberty. But if you didn't face generational trauma, girlhood or something like that then yes I feel Turning Red didn't do a great job with puberty. But I personally believe it did a great job with family issues and generational trauma than say Encanto. Mei acts like this becauss she has to deal with a well meaning yet controlling mother. And when her mother tries her best to help, Mei has to deal with the fact in order to enjoy life sometimes she just to do things HER way. That's the point of the Red Panda it's emotional baggage all Mei's family go through, so Mei accepts who she is. Though yes I can understand the period analogy wasn't explored well. In contrast, Inside Out 2 is for everyone. Puberty is complicated and Riley I enjoyed because she had agency. In the first movie she was just a placeholder for the emotions to dictate. But in Inside Out 2, she's struggling with the changes and stuff. Her friends are going to different schools, she's dealing with the fact hockey life isn't easy, and also dealing with puberty. I also believe the reason why we related to Riley is because she's down to earth in contrast to Mei. So in my eyes, I feel Riley did a great growing as a peraon. And thanks to the emotions and stuff I enjoyed how they realized Riley is herself. And that she shouldn't let go of both positive and negative.

Are you dense, both movies clearly have different themes of maturing, god this is just one of those "Turning Red Bad" videos. It's fine if you don't like turning red but this video is just plain bad faith media analysis

I'm a woman and I don't relate to Turning Red at all. The target audience is not even women. Maybe women who are very feminine and follow the standards. As a LGBT - also diagnosed with two mental disorders - who struggled a lot to fit in, I relate a lot more to Inside Out 2. It feels like something actually heavy and serious. You can face anxiety crisis even as an adult. It's totally different from that spoiled teenage girl drama we see in Turning Red like "oh no mama won't let me see the kpop hotties." That conflict isn't good enough to drive an entire movie. I wish they focused less on this "I'll use the red panda to get some money to see the boy band" thing and worked more on the bad family dynamics between May and her mother. Actually they should have discarded this panda concept. It's confusing, it's annoying and it doesn't work. It's just there to make children say "ownn the panda is so cute".
