Why IMPERFECTION Matters...

Whenever I'm working on Photography and videos, I try to remember one specific thing: Done is better than perfect. In a world of instagram, youtube and self-publishing everywhere, people love and embrace imperfections and reality. So whenever you're making stuff, don't aim for perfect. Also this is mostly a vlog about driving around Italy...

Thanks so much for your comments! I'm in Greenland with very limited internet but will get to them eventually! Also the irony of the warped stabiliser on a video about imperfection... 😂

For every 1000 people taking a photo of someone holding up the leaning tower, there are 10 protogs counting them with disdain. (Google 'Graham Clarke tower of leaning pisa'. I used to have a print of that.)(For every 1000 people there is a lot less than 1 Graham Clarke.)

Enjoyed the video James, thanks for showing us around! Hey had a concept idea, here in the US we serve pizza often on a pedestal, so how about using the leaning tower as the pedestal and putting a giant pizza on top! Yes, have it leaning toward the side and some of the hot gooey cheese starting to bunch up near coming off the edge!? It beats the people doing the hold thing and I bet you could really get a great result with your talent! Leaning tower of Pizza!!! If you like the idea throw me a bone, small print for the office would be nice!!! Thanks James! Moonpie

I bought a Fuji X100S and found the fixed focal length initially frustrating but ultimately liberating. Sometimes you had to walk around to zoom in or out, sometimes you had to get the best framing possible and live with it. I’ve found it a useful lesson in composition. Also Martin Parr did a series on Global Tourism and has a photo of people “propping up” the Leaning Tower. So you’re in good company.

When I was shooting photos in my home region I forgot the time and ran late for my last train back home. I jogged the last 5 or 7 kiometers or so just to watch it leaving right in front of me. I had two options: walking another 35 km or waiting 8 hours for the next train. I asked google how long it would take to walk home. 6 hours sounded reasonable, but what google and I did not considered were the last 6 hours and 20 km I spend walking. The night got cold - I only had a shirt, because the day was quite warm. My shoes already were worn out - I think my feet would have been better of barefooted. I could not move my body for a whole day. I now know how it must feel when you need to motivate yourself for each and every step you take. That was definitely a lesson... You trying not to miss the flight reminded me of that nightmarish experience.

Hilarious and informative content, I think you are top notch on youtube. somehow I'd like you to do more of them how-to videos, and I'd like to watch some non supra-exposed video content on the panasonic's you're shooting on. Although I think creativity and creation are superior to spec, I still like them specs on photo and video content, ...I don't care much for brands, but now when there are no alternatives to sony a7iii, and I'd love to see so me content about the non necessity to get an expensive new gear just to cut the minimum. - Language not my own so you've just have to bare with it.

Hello. Always great videos. Re PERMITS. Is there a Catch 22 for permits: That is no permit without a business (insurances, etc. and all going with it) ?? Locally I've been harrassed in NY and outside, . For example Hudson River Park Manhattan, a State of New York property, commerical photos and tripods by permit. Inside by private security for Westfield Malls and Brookfield Place and one, outsude next to NY Commodities exchange. OH and once, in Manhattan by private security for the building (mayby Dbank) in which SONY PLAZA NY is located and I was taking a pic of their door! Thanks, and sorry if question got lost, what approach for photo enthusiast.? Small chance of a post for commerical use , perhaps in a 500px listing or such.

Indoors and on private property you need permission. For parks, commercial permits are if you are doing work for stuff like marketing, photo workshops and other such commercial work. I've taken many photos of doors, it's just a matter of where you are standing when you take it. Sidewalk, fine. On private property, might have an issue. NYC is all weird now with photographs because they think you're plotting to do some sort of attack. Anyway....you should probably look into local laws regarding photos.

One of the most impactful reads on me this year was Tomas Navarro's Kintsugi. It has one of the truths that is lost from today's other self-improvment books: life is hard and we must accept that. He details how this must not derail us, however, from pursuing our goals and a better us and exposes (my favorite part) how to implement this philosophy of acception in our lives. It's such a great read and a jewel: amzn.to/2no5j2b
