Why IM DONE WITH THE INKEY LIST - The Dishonesty & Bad Marketing

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Sorry for not calling this out earlier - I know others have but we now know The Inkey List have been relying on marketing over substance and sharing with you why I am done with the inkey list.
Hey guys and welcome back to Mad About Skin where today I wanted to be totally open and honest with you and share why I am done with The Inkey List Skincare and some new information which has led to me no longer wanting to use the brand in my skincare routine.
The Inkey List is one of the most popular skincare brands out there and a favourite of the drugstore skincare market but recently they have become increasingly called out for their marketing approach, fast skincare philosophy and the lacklustre nature of their latest releases.
I am a little late to this and I am sorry that I have been an apologist for The Inkey List when others were quicker to call this out, I think I wanted to believe that because the products worked for me it was ok to overlook some of the issues the brand had with marketing.
The recent information about The Inkey List Retinol which is not a 1% retinol as previously claimed but much less than that as a retinol compound called Retistar was the final straw as this took the marketing issues to a new level.
I still stand by the recommendation of The Inkey List retinol as a good beginner retinol but its the lack of transparency of the product which is the issue I think needs to be called out.
I am open to second chances with all brands and I think if The Inkey List changes their approach and treats customers with a little more respect who knows what the future will hold but this is not a brand I am looking to use in my skincare routine for the foreseeable future.
I have always said when it comes to skincare its about doing what is right for you and your individual situation so i am not suggesting that everyone need to follow my example and stop using the inkey list it will all come down to your own take on this issue.
I would love to know your experience with the inkey list and any of the brands products so please let me know in the comments section below.
Whatever your thoughts on the inkey list skincare please consider giving this video a thumbs up and a like to support me and the channel in getting this message out there.

Hey guys and welcome to todays video.. I wanted to share with you my current thoughts on The Inkey List.. I know others have been talking about the bad marketing practices of The Inkey List for a while now and I am a little late to this one but honestly I cant overlook the way they promote their products and their fast skincare approach any more.. I would always say when it comes to brands you buy from, choose the ones which meet your needs and you dont have to agree with me on The Inkey List but whatever you think let me know in the comment section below.. Love you all so so much xxxxxx

Both The Inkey List & The Ordinary force on single ingredients & treat each single ingredient as one routine step. I'm trying to knock down the amount of steps in my routine & would love to have suggestions for products that are multi-purpose such as sunscreens that can double as moisturizers, serums that provide multiple benefits, moisturizers that do more than just moisturize, etc. The Ordinary's sister brand Hylamide is suppose to have multipurpose products but there isn't much talk about them amongst influencers.

I feel like The Inkey List has kind of boxed themselves in by branding themselves as an ingredient based skincare brand. They feel like need to have an ingredient in the name of the product rather just say "brightening cleanser" or "acne lotion". These products are more like multi-ingredient formulas & they are trying to make one ingredient the star. I enjoy the price & a few or their products but I think they should constraint on producing the products that are working & good quality & keeping those products in stock rather than having an overwhelming amount of products.

The Inkey List & Hyram just released a new "Peptide Q10 & Ginger Daily Defense Antioxidant Serum". There is literally no Ubiquinone (Q10) in the ingredients list. Once again, sketchy marketing!!! In Hyram's video, he mistakenly refers to CoQ10 as "Bisabolol", which is flat out WRONG, and makes me think he doesn’t actually know what’s in his own product.

This really explains why their retinol didn't do anything for my skin! No wonder, considering how little retinol it actually contains.

I´m glad you´re done with them. I´ve been saying this for over a year: The famous oat cleanser separates, goes bad and doesn´t clean at all and their customer service does Sh#t about it. Their serums are nothing else than humectants. Their products don´t contain enough actives to make ANY difference. Their creams are nothing else than non biodegradable silicones feel nice and soft but shit for skin and environment. Their hair care is really, really bad (on my thick hair, on my daughters thin hair, on my friend´s afro hair...) And so on and so on...

To be fair, the 1% RetinStar was in the description in the early days and was discussed in skincare circles. I do totally agree though that they definitely didn’t make it as clear as they could have. While I personally look at ingredients not claims, I’ve always found them a little underwhelming. Nicer textures than The Ordinary but very basic formulas with low concentrations of beneficial ingredients. 100% agree that there’s so many better options!

Thanks for providing us this update. I have never really got into Inkey list because Deciem is Canadian and previously I prefer shopping at Deciem stores over going into Sephora for Inkey List. The pricing of IKL wasn't that cheap in Canada and I wasn't so trusting of their formulation. It's kind of exactly opposite of Paula's Choice. I trust PC formulation but not happy with the price while IKL has reasonable price but questionable formulation and marketing practices.

@@hasnahenna6949 I got my prescription and tretinoin from Curology. I had a great experience with them, but I had to stop because my skin got super sensitive. It wasn’t a reaction to the tretinoin-I had been doing well on that strength for several months. We think it was actually due to an underlying medical condition. But I had to stop using actives for a while, and when I was ready to reintroduce a retinoid, I chose retinaldehyde. I’ve been using the Avene Retrinal for a long time and haven’t had any skin irritation, but I feel like my skin needs something more lightweight. I’ve had to pause retinoids for an unrelated issue, but I’m planning to try the one from Naturium when I can. If my skin wasn’t so sensitive though, I would definitely still be using tretinoin from Curology.

Hi Rob their original line up of products were fine and the only two things I buy here and there are from near the beginning of the brand - the oat cleansing balm and the PHA toner. It's not that easy to find a fragrance free cleansing balm that's around the £10 price point and this one does work for my finnicky skin (rosacea and eczema). I don't use it everyday and tend to rotate my cleansers depending on how my skin is that day. I also use it more in the colder months, due to the texture. The tube is more hygienic than a pot and it takes off my makeup without stinging my eyes. The PHA toner is a gentle exfoliant in a toner form my skin will tolerate and again it's around £10. I do prefer the 5% mandelic toner from by wishtrend, but alternate between the two (I use them a couple of times a week). I don't buy anything else from them and truthfully it's been a very long time since I even tried anything else from them. I'm not keen on the marketing around their products, but I am skin savvy enough to know what i'm buying so it's not a massive issue for me. I'll probably continue to buy these two longstanding products when I fancy using them again (neither are currently on rotation). i don't have a channel though and I'm not promoting them to others, which is a different thing. It is also worth mentioning they are a British brand, so that's also factoring into my decision and easily accessible in my local Boots. Best wishes.

As I’ve watched this I’m flabbergasted by the percentage of the retinol. But…..it honestly did wean me onto retinol and I did get the “retinol uglies” from this. But what?! This is very disappointing. I will still choose to purchase the peptide moisturizer just because it works for me as a daytime moisturizer for combination dry skin, and their oat balm cleanser works well for me. But I I’ll take their “actives” into consideration….

Hi! Honestly I'm still curioius about The Inkey List and I have some products to try, but I always avoided the retinol cause after some research I discovered that the percentage is way too low for me. Same for the fulvic acid cleanser: I was curious so I bought the smaller size to see how it works on my skin. I always thought that the peptide moisturizer was too expensive for the percentage of active (even if it's still affordable). As you said, every brand have some issues especially from a marketing perspective, so I try to do my own researches and find what can may work for me. Have a great day!

I love their oat and salicylic cleanser and the niacinamide but the retinol did give me struggles. When I first started it, my skin was glowy and fresh, I used a different retinol for a time and then went back to the inkey list one. This time I just cant tolerate it but I can tolerate the retinal from g & g. Its super weird whenever I use it my face is fine but around the eyes I get suuuuper red, my skin thickens and peels. It takes daaaays of la roche posay cicaplast and bepanthen to get rid of it. I dont know if I got a bad one or if they changed formulation or just my skin changed but I cant tolerate it anymore which is so weird. I have no problems with the ordinary emulsion, the g & g retinal and the la roche posay retinol serum in the red bottle. I tolerated all retinols well for so long. I am no longer putting my trust in TIL retinol and wont be trying news just my cleanser. The niacinamide isnt sensational either

My skin gets along really well with The Inkey List and I’ve switched most of my The Ordinary products out for them because I see the same benefits from most of them (and better on occasion), and they often beat The Ordinary in my book when it comes to cosmetic elegance (does it absorb well into my skin? Does it not pill up? Does it leave a nice finish or leave my face sticky?) and packaging (I’ve had too many cases where The Ordinary’s packaging failed over the long run-seals breaking, caps that turn and turn and turn without ever closing with a nice seal, etc.) Now, to be fair, there are a LOT of their products I haven’t tried (and don’t necessarily interest me). Those mandelic/succinic acids for instance. But the products I’ve used I’ve either loved or at least got along well with.

You are right about their misleading marketing in this packed skincare world but at least they do not try to sell us marula oil at a drunk price 🐘. They look more like a cleanser brand to me. Their Vitamin C or Vitamin A serums did not appeal to me from the start. Their Retinol eye cream is even more ridiculous. But I still need to try their azelaic acid serum. I liked their Niacinamide serum which is much better than the one from The Ordinary for my skin.

I love their azelaic acid as well! I'm so happy to find a good, cheap azelaic acid serum that's not in silicones like the Ordinary. I personally don't mind the misleading marketing too much because I know how to navigate the BS to find what I actually want. It takes something egregious for me to boycott a brand. Something like Mario Badescu's steroid mess. I will never trust their word unless I could see actually change in the company.

Ha! I just commented about them on your go to/avoid Vitamic C vid. I only use two products. Their salicylic acid cleanser combined with the beta hydroxy acid on my nose and right next to it on the left and right. Combination skin. Ugh. I use a different cleanser for the rest of my face. I noticed my pores on my nose got smaller. Visibly. “Maybe” 50 percent. And cheap enough for me to keep buying. But their retinol eye serum? Terrible.

They recently released a few products that weren’t mind blowing but they were still good. The other products in their line have saved my skin. Please don’t try to cancel the whole brand due to a few products you feel were sub par. I really don’t think you undertand the power of influencers. Your opinion is valid and I agree, however making a statement that you “…are moving on” and that you aren’t buying ANYTHING anymore feels like you have other reasons too. I think there is a much better way to express your opinions rather that blast the entire brand in one video grouping all products in the “No Buy” category like you have.

1000% agreed. was so excited to try them a year ago and was not impressed by anything. i tried a range: their niacinamide, oat cleansing balm (this one's p good - the first bottle i got was at least but the second had these weird hard balls in it and they were not willing to refund), tranexamic acid (complete fail), succinic treatment '(useless), turmeric moisturiser (awful!!), etc. nothing impressed me much, so you have to wonder, after trying such a broad and diverse range of products, and nothing's working, what really is going on here. and this paired with the shady marketing... yup, a big no from me.

I've never used anything else from them since as I'd researched each active as I wanted to try it out, their products haven't really stood up to other brands enough to bother. I was a big fan of both of them. But when I saw they sold already existing product just adding rainbow whatever ingredients for triple price, and at the end like only 1 dollar goes to charity, I was like ok thats enough for me. It has *the* perfect finish on my skin. For the price it's good enough, though I admit, the marketing is a bit shady, especially considering the later launches. Their marketing never sat right with me either, however just because it's a low percentage of retinol doesn't mean it can't be effective. 0.003-0.3% is considered moderate strength retinol, a controlled clinical trial published in March 2015 further confirmed results from older studies showing that 0.1% retinol improves multiple signs of ageing in eight weeks, with cumulative results over the course of a year. Of note was the increase in collagen and hyaluronic acid.
