I understand completely where you’re coming from. But once you’re actually on safari, it’s easy to get jaded quickly. I was in Kruger for 3 days in April and we were seeing several different herds of elephants every time we went for a drive. By the third day, we wouldn’t even stop to have a look unless they were very close to the road. We were instead focusing on searching for animals we hadn’t seen much of.

Idiots parked all around them and made them feel threatened. They put down a bear that bit a guys butt because the idiot bus driver let them off to see the bear. They chased it. Idiots.

The driver of that open vehicle passed that elephant herd, dead-slow. It is easy to recommend another road, but in a national park the size of Wales, that is not always possible. So the rule is always to be discreet when passing game ( wild animals ). In other words, no using of the horn ( hooter ), no screaming, no feeding wild animals, and no members of the body outside any vehicle, which could attract predators. And, most importantly, enjoy your time in the Kruger, the Grand Old Lady of national parks in South Africa. She really is special.

However, the elephants were clearly intended to take out long stay rights on that bit of road and those that were not prepared to wait all eased past very carefully, with minimum disturbance to the elephants. Bob in Thailand here, elephants that size can overturn a full sized tour bus. If I run into wild elephants on my motorcycle in Thailand, I turn around and go the other way. Instead of the safari concept, Thailand elephant camps have domesticated elephants that have been around humans since birth. They can be played with, washed, fed (sugar cane is popular with elephants, and pineapple) swim with them, ridden, and posed for you sitting on their knee when they sit down. The drivers appeared very careless to crowd the elephants, especially when they assume the defensive circle.

Absolutely!!!!! This happened to us 2 days ago and that aggravated the elephants that we could not get past and had to do a turnaround which made us very late to get out in time, fortunately they were still at the gate 35 minutes late!!! We were very annoyed with that game ranger!!!!

Elephants (and probably hippos, too) are animals which never feel the need to restrain themselves from acting out if they feel pissed off, lol. There's never any down side to it for them.

I think that there will always be opinions that differ and conflict. What I will say is that the guide actually appeared to know what he was doing. When you're in the bush, day in and day out, you learn how to interact with the animals. Sometimes you have to take the right of way. But there's a way to do it that does not risk lives or an expensive vehicle, and I mean animal lives a s well as human. We have to sometimes give way to the animals. We've sat and waited as baboons threw winter thorn pods down to a feeding herd and only when the baboons came down kit of the tree did the ellies move on. One was even suckling a youngster. Another time !? I had to absolutely get past on a narrow stretch of road and had to get the elephants to move to one side. Slowly, and gently. No revving of engines or loud noises, no speeding up. But, sometimes, you have to assert yourself and the right of way. Just don't take risks if you don't know what you're supposed to know. Those of us who work in this environment hopefully all learn it quickly.
