Why I Went To Hospital (again)

This isn't normally something I'd share but I thought it was important! Also I had some typical "Phil" moments during the whole situation so I thought i'd give you an excuse to laugh at me.

As someone who's had to have, over the past year: multiple smear tests, vaginal surgery, a camera shoved down my throat and into my stomach, had to pee in front of three people while my bladder was monitored, and am now having bowel issues which will probably require a colonoscopy, I appreciate everyone being more open about these "embarrassing" health problems.

Phil, I am so glad you went to the doctor's and made sure you were okay. Three weeks ago my best friend was having similar symptoms but ignored it because she didn't have health insurance. Now, she is in the ICU, dying because she had cancer in her colon and it has spread everywhere else in her body. I just said goodbye to her today, the doctors say she will pass within 24 hours. Thank you Phil for making this video because maybe if my friend had gone to the doctor sooner she could have been saved, so maybe this video could have even saved a life. I wish healthcare was better in America though, she was scared of how much it would cost. But in the end it cost her life.

I don’t want my patients to be embarrassed for seeking medical care because I want my patients to be happy and healthy.

So just before Phil posted this video I started having intestinal trouble, and also had found a lump. I was pretty scared because it was so unusual (and I have IBS). I watched this, then set an appointment with a gastroenterologist, and was so worried. She of course set up an endoscopy and colonoscopy, along with other tests. I have now been diagnosed with severe gastritis, and I'm in the process of being diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I want to say thanks for making the video. It gave me a lot of comfort during my procedures and really made me feel better about the issues I'm having. It normalized something that is often seen as taboo and gave me the push I needed.

I remember being really embarrassed when I had to take off my bra for a chest x-ray. I was already embarrassed from just being in that gown with just my undergarments on, but I dunno the bra thing just kind of shot that through the roof. The nurse who had wheeled me there and back on the stretcher could tell though, and she just assured me that lots of people had to do the same thing and comforted me about it. It was during when the quarantine was just starting, so it was the first time I didn't have my mom with me (which had made me super nervous about everything as well) and I think that nurse could tell that I was just super uncomfortable with everything and she did her best to assure me for the majority of my visit. I remember that nurse well because she was super sweet and reassuring during the whole ordeal. I appreciated it a lot tbh. Kind of unrelated I guess, but phil talking about this reminded me lol

I’m so glad Phil talked about anxiety with going to a hospital. As someone who’s grown up in a toxic household that consisted of parents who didn’t want me (a disabled person) to go to the hospital when I needed to, I ended up developing anxiety when it comes to going to the hospital, to the point where I went several months not going when I knew I had injured one of my ankles and that caused me to develop tendinitis due to my fear of what my parents would do if I asked to go to the hospital. If I had just gone regardless of what they thought I would have a minimum of two less disorders than I do now. I now have to live the rest of my life with tendinitis, an eye lid disorder, and a few other disorders/disabilities which most could have been prevented if I had gotten help when I needed it. So, no matter what, if you are in doubt about anything in your body functioning correctly, or if you think you might be sick or having something broken, go to the doctor just in case. The only things that can happen is you go and they find nothing so you know you’re okay, or they find something and start fixing from the start when it can most likely be cured, vs waiting and possibly developing an incurable disorder/disability that you’ll live with for the rest of your life (and was preventable).

The first time I had to go for an annual exam to get my, ah, bits checked out, I told my doctor, "hey, this is new for me and I'm a little nervous." I had my first colonoscopy when I was 13 and I was so embarrassed. I didn’t tell anyone what was happening. Just that I was in the hospital. I later realized that it’s not embarrassing. It’s normal. It’s a way to keep you healthy!!!!!

I'm suddenly allergic to mushrooms and I had to go to the emergency room because the mushrooms literally STOPPED MY INTESTINES FROM WORKING so it had to be flushed out, thank god I was half drugged up. They did colonoscopy / cleaning, the prep was so bad I had to drink 3 huge bottles of water which meant i shat myself all night

I've literally just gone through the exact same thing and I've been so worried and scared about it all. They think I might have a mild case of Crohns disease so I do have something wrong with me, but nothing sinister. Seeing you make this video has made me realize how common this stuff really is and honestly admire you a lot for bringing up. It's just kinda cool to see a KZreadr I've watched since I was 12 go through the same thing. Youve made me feel a lot less worried and less alone because it really is so common for young people to get GI symptoms. Thank you

It's important to talk about things like this, well done Phil! 🤠 I recently had my first smear test (In the UK when you turn 25 you get invited and tested again every 3 years). Omg I was terrified thinking 'I don't want someone to see down there!! - and poke me with a strange thing in the V' 😂 but I braved it and glad I did. It is an odd experience and It's easy to get wrapped up in feeling embarrassed or insecure. But remember these people are trained and have seen body's in all shapes and sizes, they don't judge they are just there for your health.
