Why I Use Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tyres

A brilliant Easter holiday ride out in my local Pennine hills, with not a puncture in sight. In this video I give my reasons for using Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres ... and also try to show a bit more of this fantastic area for cycling (if you like hills that is!).
Do you have a go-to set of trusted tyres on your road bikes? Let me know if so. And happy cycling!

Nice ride that. Great visibility and extra-clear skies over Cock Hill - looked like you had a nice tailwind at the end, I'm guessing that was Cragg Vale. The compromise of grip/durability/puncture resistance/speed is always interesting. My road bikes, being older with rim brakes, don't have enough clearance for Marathon Plus - but I've had good results with Schwalbe Durano Double Defense.

Yes, views for miles up there. Although I think the last time I went up over the tops to Haworth the visibility was about 50 feet! Definitely glad of the tailwind at the end as my legs were a bit shot. Agree whatever tyres you go with there's a compromise/trade off between those things you mentioned. I think the Marathons (not Plus) go as thin as 700x23. Never heard of the Durano line, will check them out. Happy cycling!

@@onemorecyclist I've heard very good things about the continental contact urban if you're after something lighter, better performing, but with nearly as good puncture resistance. I stick with marathons tho, cos I just pootle around at 15mph on an ebike so weight/handling not an issue lol.

Do you think the MTB version of these are also a good choice for a hardtail eMTB? Got my first puncture after 50miles so want to choose an upgrade from the Schwalbe Smart Sams it came with. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the comment. My gut feeling says they could be a good choice, although I don't have direct experience of using Schwalbes on my MTB. In terms of an object getting through the tyre they'd be really good. I don't know if they'd provide any additional protection with pinch flats though (which I seem to always get due to mis-timed bunny hops over rocks!). Happy cycling!

I found Marathon Racers lighter with more feel and pretty puncture proof. Never had a puncture with them. I have SMP+ but find them a bit wooden and heavy. What volume ones are you using 28C? I like to ride with 35C or 38C Racers. Also I would like to ride in this area but have never visited. What is the route you rode on this day? Just the key places/roads would be very useful so I can work it out on Google Maps. I live in the flat Fens. Many thanks.

Hi Alex. Thanks for the comment. Mine are 25c, which I think is the narrowest you can go with these particular tyres. I'm happy to take the weight penalty for the extra tread and bomb proof aspects. My route that day was down the Calder valley from the Littleborough side (it's the A6033 on a map), through Todmorden and onto the A646 into Hebden Bridge. Then it's the steep climb up out of Hebden (A6033) and over to Oxenhope and Haworth.

I had amarathon plus put on my E bike today after two punchers in the rear in three weeks due to flints, I had slime in the tubes but that made no difference at all, I am just hoping those tyre sorts out the issue as I am losing a bit of interest in going out which is a shame as I have only had the. Bike 8 weeks new from halford. I got an e bike to try to help me lose some weight as a normal bike hurt my chest to much which is not good when you have heart issues.

Reasonable rolling resistance durability and good road holding on those tyres but quite weighty, I have found much lighter good road holding with an even better rolling resistance and still reasonable puncture resistant but obviously not as good as the marathon plus,it's always a bit of a trade off

  • @onemorecyclist

    @onemorecyclist

    Жыл бұрын

Definitely a trade off. I don't really analyse stats but I'd say my speed on the flat for the same effort drops by about 2mph with the Schwalbes on, which makes quite a difference on a full day out ... but it's most likely a day out with a bit more comfort and no punctures (which for me is worth the trade off). Out of interest, what are the tyres you mention? Thanks for following along and happy cycling!

Gorgeous views. Wow! Thanks for the video, and I couldn't agree more. Ur roads just look terribly narrow to ride on lol. Maybe the motorists are a lot more forgiving in ur part of the world?? I bought a pair for my 26er and I have to admit they are heavy. But they roll amazingly well, I do not feel that weight while riding, and they are just so quiet. Like you, I love the added confidence to just go ahead and bomb downhill without the usual worries. Altho for my road bike, I have had a ton of luck with GatorSkins. Be safe, bro

Thanks, Eric. Appreciate you checking out the video! It only takes one dangerous motorist to ruin a ride sometimes (or worse, of course) but on the whole I find the drivers round this way pretty considerate, or at least the trend is it's getting better. I'm guessing you're outside the UK (wider roads etc.)? Haven't tried GatorSkins but they seem to be well-regarded by many! Happy cycling!

I'm sure cycling in London has its own charms and challenges. Yes, fingers crossed that's the end of punctures for you. I always struggled getting tyres on and off but use a Tyre Glider now and for me it's made it loads easier. I'm not connected to the company at all but might be worth adding one of these to your tool kit if you haven't considered this already? Thanks for the comment and happy cycling down there!

At the end of the day we can only go off our own experiences but a lot of people seem to report less issues with the Schwalbes on and get a lot of miles out of the tread, myself included. Two punctures in a week sucks. I pulled a needle-sharp thorn out of my front MTB tyre last week (with Maxxis on) and it was flat the next morning. I doubt Schwalbes would have made much difference preventing that one.

They are simply the best! Agree with @pauljones5066. They safe lives when commuting through Brussels early in the morning and in the traffickjam in the late afternoon in all conditions. Those stubborn Germans do what they are made for, namely bring you safe everywhere safely. Pedalling you still have to do yourself.
