Next week: why I switched back modelers. And multi effects pedals…and back to analog pedals and modelers. And back to REAL amps. And to plugins. And re-amped modelers plugged into plug ins through the effects loop of a valve amp.

I switched from using a traditional mop and bucket to using one of those speed mops. Found them to be lightweight, convenient and their multi purpose uses seemed revolutionary, not needing water or extra cleaning products. After a while I started to wonder if my home was actually as clean as it would be if I was still using a traditional mop n bucket, even though no one who visited noticed any difference. I started to intermittently return to using the trad mop and Ive recently realised that whilst the speed mop is still super convenient, I started to appreciate how a traditional mop felt under the hands, reassuringly heavy and durable compared to the lightweight super mop. I’ll probably still use the speed mop for quick cleans, but if I’m doing a proper deep clean, I think I’ll always revert to a traditional tried and tested mop and bucket. 🤔😎

The traditional is way to heavy, as you get older you will regret hauling that mop and bucket around from room to room but you will get more clarity and your cleans will sparkle. In saying that I have a whole cupboard full of speed mops I don’t use anymore.

One benefit I've accidentally found after switching from a modeler to an amp is that I've gotten much more comfortable with my gear, rather than frequently building new patches with different amps. I'm a pretty average player, so having a simple setup that I know and always practice with has helped my confidence a lot when playing live.

I have to agree. I first had the HD500 and did feel like I was getting everything out of it I could and I wasn't satisfied. But the Helix always gave me inklings that my tone could be better. I became really self-conscious and tweaked way too often. I can't afford my happy place amp though... My favorite amp is a Mesa Electradyne, which sucks for weight. I've not bought one because my back told me not to.

I switched to a Synergy tube amp and haven’t looked back. I can have one amp and a dozen different pre-amp modules to switch between depending on what I am playing. It’s the best of both worlds… real tube amps but with the added flexibility that you can usually only get in modeler systems. Genius.

I've found that the Fender FR-12 allows for a similar setup. I use either an FM9 or Helix and send a line to FOH. The FR-12 gives quick access to adjust stage tone via its knobs. Getting feedback has never been a problem with a Powercab or the FR-12 and I have less things to carry and plug in. So many options these days! Whatever works and allows you to feel confident and perform. Cheers!

Interesting video - many of us of had some of the same thoughts I expect. I've steered clear of digital modellers for playing gigs, not because they don't sound good but because in the heat of the moment I want to be able to turn a knob, not dive down a menu. I have a valve driven Carl Martin Ampster pedal/amp emulator, which, I think, sounds great through a PA. On "stage", which in my world, usually means a cramped corner of a pub, I have a little amp (Blackstar HT 5) acting as sort of monitor, mainly for my benefit, or if there is enough space, my Fender Deluxe Reverb. The on stage amps are fed from the "through" output of the Ampster. This allows me to have a bit of reverb and/or delay in the mono PA FOH speakers which gives a nice spatial effect. When there's a chance to turn things up a bit it's a real joy to play through and when things have to be kept fairly restrained it still works well. A big benefit of doing it this way is not having to try and mike up an amp - very often this is difficult to do well because of lack of space, and needing to minimise scope for feedback.

I have put together a mini board consisting of a Friedman irx and an Eventide H90. The Eventide is routed to that I can have an algorithm before and after the preamp if I choose. That is ran into a Klipch computer monitor system because it sounds absolutely wonderful for $200. I also have a Polyend play plus for making my own tracks. Tone for days.

I’m definitely going through the same dilemma as you John - almost parallel lives 😂 I mostly use the helix, a wampler tumnus in front for push when needed. It’s works great and I use it to control our lighting too. I recently put together a smaller board with the hxstomp and Friedman irx but have yet to gig this. Thing is I still yearn for the days of plugging into my mesa boogie and having the feel of feedback and liveliness in playing. I seem to be going full circle and veering towards amps again. The sound engineer in me is saying stay with silent stage but it’s just not fun. We do paid pubs and weddings - I’m not making a living from it - so why shouldn’t we make it fun?!

You should. The only modeling I’ve ever enjoyed using live, was just a cab sim in the direct out of an Egnster Rebel 30. It’s just a cab sim, so it uses the full amp, pre and power, instead of an amp modeler. The amp can be silent or playing, with a normal mic cable to the mixer. The sound guy even said it was the best straight to a mixer tone he’d heard, until I explained it was actually the amp. All amps should have a cab sim on a direct out, like that. 30 watt amp.

Been enjoying your videos. I’ve been building this rig and I’m altering the build to incorporate my full helix into the build…Mostly for routing purposes. I’m still gonna loop my preamp of my Mesa boogie into one effects loop and the out from the attenuator will loop in giving me real power tubes as well. Kinda avoiding the preamps on the system, using it for wet effects and cab sim. My intent has been tubes the entire time with the option of padding the sound with any options I can have. I’m selling my RJM PCB 6x, my two notes cab m plus, and my UAFX dream 65 and the UAFX lion….kinda works out weight wise and size only much cleaner of a setup….hopefully it is what I’m looking for. I do think using a “lighter cab” is a bad idea though….it becomes a cheaper sound….weight is a consideration….but not when it effects tone.

Back in its heyday I had the POD Pro in my rack into flat response Rocktron stereo 12s with the rocktron 100w poweramp. I thought I was ahead of the curve back then an so darn smart running that setup. It had alot to do with not even being close to being able to afford what I really wantef in the way of a variety of quality tube amps... Fast forward to today... About 12 years ago I sold off all my stuff, my rack setup and all my guitars (including stuff like a Rocktron Replifex, birdbeak Kramer, and a true custom shop Jackson. I was frustrated, life had changed for me, I had less time (marriage, kids, ect.), I wasn't in a regular band anymore, music tastes had changed and rig couldn't do it, ect... Most of all I gotten to the point where previously I had gotten to spend prolonged time with other peoples REAL tube amps. I learned what real tube response was and I got to where I literally couldn't stand playing without it... Then about 2 years ago I started to get back into listening to great guitar music from great players and started looking at what they were using. Some of the best amplike non amp stuff I heard was actually sansamp stuff direct. I got so impressed I ended up finally trying the stuff out and was blown away by how it would respond like a real tube amp without blowing the windows out. Now I got a pedalboard with sansamp stuff at the heart of it all. I long for nothing now and I tried the kemper stuff too. Sansamp is the secret winner in my book. Those guys at Tech 21 have been at it along time and I believe they have it down by using primarily analog circuits for tube dynamics emulation vice digital modeling. It actually got me seriously playing again!

I think it's important to have multiple tools at your disposal for gigs. For the last several years since moving from an amp and pedals, to a helix, and now a Fractal FM9 based board, I have used either a Friedman ASM12 or a Marshall 1960BV 4x12 cab with a SD PS170 amp. In either case (venue and gig dependent) I still run direct as well. At this point, I just don't see myself going back to a dedicated pedalboard and/or tube amp/cab and dealing with the cabling, and multiple load in trips etc etc.

Spent several weeks designing basically 3 main presets, and few others based on those with an attempt to comes as a close to possible to my normal live rig (I generally used either a Friedman Runt 20 head/cab or a Mesa Fillmore 25 combo). Neither is heavy but can be plenty loud. My band has its own in-ear rack so we are always IEM. It was different, but not in a better or worse ways. Some ways each. I enjoyed the ease of using the TMP for sure

I'm with you on having an amp on stage - but I'm also a fan of lowering the stage volume to a reasonable level. I've been playing a pair of Princeton Reverb with attenuators and using a hollowbody Gretsch because it gives feedback a little easier. I'm very strongly considering switching to using my UAFX Dream as my "amp" and using a pair of those new Fender FR10 for my stage volume, and sending that to FOH. That should give me the tone I'm looking for and give me controllable stage volume - in stereo, of course. :)

It's funny you mentioned lighter gear getting you back into real stuff because that's exactly what I'm doing lol. I purchased a Mojotone 4x12 Lite cab and got it loaded with their neodymium speaker options: two Mojotone BV-60Ns (basically a Neo Greenback, from my understanding) and two Neo Creambacks. The whole cab weighs like 43 lbs, it's insanely light for a 4x12. Then I got the harebrained idea to try their Grand Canyon with the same speaker config. It took a 95 lb cab down to about ~65 lbs. It's totally changed how I feel about real gear again cuz when my friends and I were touring, we had huge 4x12s that weighed like 110 lbs a piece and they were beasts to manage on your own. Not saying I'd tour again but having lightish 4x12s definitely makes me reconsider trying to make a FOH or FRFR set up work instead.

I’m sure you’ve covered this, but what is the signal path for your HX to amp? I’ve tried 3 ways: 1) HX out > amp input, 2) HX out > amp effects return, and 3) HX effects send > amp input. I can’t recall if I tried HX send into amp return. Anyway #2 seems the most pleasing. I de-select cabinet simulation on my HX patches. Also, the effects return bypasses the preamp and tone stack on my Rev D20. Haven’t gigged it, so all of this might be total crap in the real world.

You seem to do a video every few months about how you are changing direction. :) I have not gone back to real amps, unless you count the Catalyst at my second home where I have very little equipment at the moment (all my main gear is at my primary home until next year when I move). I don't have my HX Stomp there at this time, so the Cat does my amps/cabs and I use an Ampero Mini for some effects. I play mostly without front of house support for the instruments, so having something behind me is ALWAYS required. But I also want the ability to play at ANY volume, which just isn't true with most tube amps (not enough volume for cleans, and/or too much volume for dirt).

I have a few modelers and find that they sit unused much of the time, since in order to get the sounds I want I have to spend as much time tweaking as playing, and I have very little time these days. I am experimenting with my Headrush Pedalboard which I really like the form factor and touchscreen UI of, as an effects center and bypassing all the amps and cabs. This is a simple solution that gives me the best of both worlds. Spending hours in front of my Fractal FM3 at home only to not like the sound onstage or at rehearsal, then being really not easy to tweak it further really sucked the fun out of playing for me

John, have you tried running your modeler into a 2 channel powered monitor? I run my firebox into channel 1 of my powered monitor in front of me and turn the level up until I can get a nice controlled feedback. I run the typical monitor feed into channel 2. I no longer need to carry a separate guitar cabinet and guitar stage volume is barely heard off stage. My monitor is an Electrovoice ZLX-15BT.

I feel like this is just all one big cycle that repeats. I used to be die hard amp and cab only and then I got a 2Notes captor X and ran my heads on stage DI down to an FRFR and the house and while that gave me the consistency in the sound show after show and made it a bit lighter load in not using a cab, I was still having to load and move the FRFR that sat behind me. Then I got the AxeFX III and the case that was in sat behind me by the FRFR and let me clear my stompboxes or Stomp HX (depending on which board I used) to just use the FC6 controller. I realized I was only using a fraction of the AxeFX's power so I sold it and went back to just using a friedman Runt 50 on stage but instead of the CaptorX, I used the Waza TAE and it sounded/felt better than the CaptorX but now I'm back to the amp head, a big attenuator box on top of the head, more cables and pedals back on my board but now with midi controlling the TAE effects. Then I went back to fractal and got the FM3 and have been using that for nearly a year now with just that on the floor and an FRFR behind me. I should have just stopped there but now I've got a Friedman IR-X on the christmas list and the plan is to try that out on my pedal board with the Stomp HX for effects or maybe a couple strymon pedals I've got in the closet but still sending out to the FRFR and PA. I only use one core sound and that's basically a modded marshall sound. I'm not getting rid of the FM3 though. It's going on the sidelines simply from a physical footprint perspective as there's not enough room for it and the IR-X on my board but the Stomp HX is perfect to step in and just add effects. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before I switch things up again. I've got a Mako Amplification 1x12 cab and the thought of grabbing the Duncan powerstage 200 and using that with the mako cab and ditching the FRFR to get a more natural guitar sound on stage but still sending the IR signal to the house.

I’m in a similar camp. I love playing my tube Amps - nothing gives you that feel today. Butttt there’s something to be said about sound consistency and ease of transport/maintenance. So I’ve built a board with a Strymon Iridium in case my amp dies.

A lot different tools to do the same job but in the end, real amps are just simply fun. You play guitar into a modeler as sound comes out with an amp you play into it and it seams like it's alive, it's playing back, it's reacting to your playing like to digital rig does. IMHO!

Every time I've seen bands using the silent stage technique, I've been disappointed with the sound. The musician might have had great in-ear mixes, but out front was a different story. One crucial problem with silent stage is that the guitars don't really interact with the amps, which makes for a sterile sound. It's real amps for me, even if they're a pain to haul around.

Its great to have both, a modeler is great for the convenience, especially if the gig requires a lot of different tones (cover bands xD). None of them compare to the feedback and connection you get to a real amp and cabinet though, even in mid 2024. I prefer my direct to PA setup for short gigs or where I wont have time to dial in my amp and mic setup, but if you get really good at micing your amp and have your tone dialed in, theres no comparing the two. edit: bring your own mic and cable, and if you know exactly where the mic sounds best (angle and position) then all you have to do is be nice to the soundman and ask him to turn it up where he thinks it fits best in the mix, and if he cant to cut some bass and boost the level. Done, fin, the end, its that simple.

As a bass player it's really useful to be able to get closer to the amp when you really need to hear yourself, but move a bit further away/to the side when you don't. I can 100% see why IEMs are a great thing but I do really like standing in front of an amp and I play pub gigs so it's just easier to plonk an amp in the corner than try to get it all going throut a PA, but that's just me.

One thing is very clear about using modelers 'Live', there is basically is no real weight savings when you have the playback amp/cab system on stage with you vs a real amp/cab. Furthermore the footprint will be about the same. The basic advantages for modelers 'Live' is the possible reduction of not having to use a pedal board and also having a lot of flexibility you can get out of the modeler for the different songs on the list.

What about Powercab in Flat/LF Raw mode? I find that's a pretty good sounding guitar speaker, I use it without a cab block in the modeler (Helix or Quad Cortex for me). I put the cab model in to FOH and my IEMs. This seems pretty convenient, simple, sounds great, and is very flexible. I can use Flat/FRFR for example for acoustic patches.

I feel bad for my tube amps. They have been stacked in a corner for well over a year. I used to run my Helix through the power amp in on two Katanas. I was very happy with that setup until I compared the tone to a Powercab 112 + using the speaker emulations. There was a noticeable difference. I am currently running two Powercab 112+ along with Helix and I love it. Yes, it does take a while to get my presets exactly where I want them, but the tone is exceptional. I will probably not sell my tube amps because I know myself well enough to know that someday I may change my mind.

Totally right there with you on the head/cab, I don't care for combos for that reason, split the weight up.
