I in the past year, I converted from Stihl to Echo. Not picking a fight, just sharing my story. I had a old Stihl 036 pro and a ms310. Both were good saws, and never had a problem. Bought my dad a MS 250, and he had starting issues, and when I looked for smaller saw for me, I decided to try a Echo CS 400, and WOW! What a great 40cc saw, starts great, cuts through larger stuff than what I should have put it in, and I was so impressed, I bought the CS590 Echo Timberwolf...........and holy crap! It smoked my larger Stihl saws in power and speed of cut. That saw is a beast. Starts easy. I sold both of my Stihls and my dad sold his and bought both a 400 and a 590 too. End of story.

  • @EricRush

Non-ethanol is the key for smooth operation of all small engines. It got to where I could take apart the carbs on my saw, outboard motors, motor scooter, ATV, and generator and put them back together blindfolded. (Well, almost.) Switched to non-ethanol a few years ago and haven't touched a carb since, except to clear the high-speed jet on my Stihl exactly once.

Your gonna find out soon enough that non ethanol ain't enough. It's bad engineering. Here's the first sign of good quality going to shit: Think back to when anything of good quality started going down hill and what was directly associated with it. It's the introduction of good machinery into "Big Box Stores". Ace Hardware has just recently started carrying Stihl. Gone to shit. Just be mindful of other things that have and will take that path.

  • @breeze787

That is so further from the truth you guys are all passing "bad" ethanol info. Gasoline all by itself can go bad. Gasoline doesn't need any help from ethanol to go bad because gasoline goes bad all by itself just by sitting there. I purchased my home in 2002 and everyone of my original small engines (Honda weed whacker, Honda riding lawn mowers, California trimmer, Ryobi blower, Troybilt shredder, Honda 20" lawn mower, Honda power washer, Ryobi rear tine tiller) carry left over gas through the winter period including the entire 15% of ethanol that supposedly wrecks your small engine equipment. In most cases I start all of the above with the 1st pull yeah including the Troybilt shredder with a Kohler engine. I stop using my lawn equipment for all of approximately 6 months from about November to and through to April or May and have not had any problems with any of my garden equipment where ethanol would be the culprit. You guys are getting your information anecdotally from other gasoline opinions here on youtube and none of them are true because they are like yours all made up. You guys don't know squat about ethanol and shame on your for blasting your mouth off and passing information not based on facts.

He's right. Advoko Makes (Bushcraft KZreadr) was running two Stihl chainsaws and one broke, but the 20 year old one kept going. He contacted STIHL support and they said it was the gas/oil mixture to blame. When he told them he was using the same mixture on both his chainsaws and the 20 year old STIHL was working fine, they didn't have an answer. He took the newer, broken chainsaw apart and found the piece that was broken. It turns out that STIHL has outsourced some of their production to Qingdao, China. Yet another company takes the dive in quality by outsourcing to shoddy, slave-like labor in China to turn a quick buck. I'm done with STIHL.

From what they said, dollars run a little higher RPMS but don't last as long. They said echo's run a little slower than some saws and they seemed to think that was a big reason they run forever. I've cut 4-5 cords yr for 6 years on my Echo 450 and it starts on the second pull every time. I did replace some tensioner parts 2 years ago, but that was no big deal. Love my Echo

The heart of any chainsaw is the engine. The foundation that every chain saw engine is based on was developed by Sachs-Dolmar. Makita later bought out Dolmar. They made the best, using very high quality parts made to consistent tolerances. A good Sachs engine will last over 1200 hours and be brought back to life by just changing the piston ring and rebuilding the carb. Companies that have followed the Sachs engine design are Echo, Husky, Shindawa, and previously Stihl. Chinese chain saws often use engines of dubious to poor quality due to metallurgical and design alterations made to cut production costs. With regards to Stihl, I agree they are not making products as good as they used to be. I recently worked with a homeowner that got rid of his fairly new 20"Stihl because a 30 year old Echo 16" I brought back to life for him significantly out performed his Stihl.

Stihl, like all companies has fallen into the trap of trying to sell to the entire market. Their cheaper saws carry the Stihl reputation and name recognition but they are ruining the brand rep by selling saws to meet price.

If anyone is making equipment today that can not tolerate ethanol, it is probably junk anyway.

  • @pyromedichd1

@@halshaw3919 IF you run your saws often and use up the ethanol fuel in them so it doesn't sit for months in disuse you are far less likely to encounter the common problems with ethanol in fuel. Most problems come when ethanol fuels undergo phase separation which incorporates water in the fuel with the result of corrosion. Newer saws and equipment are made with rubber parts that better tolerate ethanol, but almost all rubber will eventually be affected by ethanol at some point in time. You may be fortunate to own newer equipment with parts that are more ethanol tolerant, however, may people own equipment that is still in good working order that is 30 years or more old. That equipment will be affected far more by ethanol in fuel. One argument that cannot be disputed, ethanol in fuel will undergo phase separation if left it sit long enough, with resulting associated problems to follow.

EPA have changed the game so don't expect any saw to last the 25 to 40 years that they used to, every major manufacturer has been forced to re design their products thus leading to out sourcing components most of which are made in China even if they are assembled in Switzerland or Germany. Sadly it is all part of the throw away society we live in... One only has to look in the catalouges of the major manufacturers to see the fancy new names they give to dulled down versions of inadequate equipment... Like X TORQUE for example.. Which means highly restricted and regulated chainsaw. It is a sad day when to get the best you have to go with a clone made in China of an older model.........

My buddies who work at wright tree service in Minnesota and asphland also company in run nothing but stihl saws and would run nothing else. I like stihl saws, work great, easy to Maintain, but I also like echos a bunch, and huskies I own and use. My dad cuts wood during the week, alot, runs stihls but recently got a new 3cho 620p and it's a damn nice saw. Used it for a bit the other weekend, reminded me in feel to my husky, but longevity is yet to be seen. Maintenace is easy, decent design felt great worked great. You can dislike stihl for your needs, but consider your not using them daily all day long every day, topping trees, felling big trees, day in day out booms, power lines buildings, 110f in the summer to 20belownin the winter and they trust and run stihls. There's a reason bud. We don't have to get it, but there's a reason

You said it! I work for a tree service and we run stihl only. Personally i have used everything from a poulan "wild thing" to a husky 450 to an antique jonsered, echo, homelite and on and on. The absolute best saw you can buy is the one that works for you! As long as its a stihl..... jk

Have a Stihl 660 that I love but was to big for most things (in all fairness it works perfect). I bought an Echo 490 then a 310. Not sure I'd buy anything but an echo anymore. They both work flawlessly.

That's correct. You can't honestly compare a professional grade chain saw to a homeowner grade, although both will cut wood. The pro saw will last longer & by design, is much easier to service than a homeowner type.0

Forty years ago Shaws Dolmar, now Dolmar, was one of the best I have used. I took one the the Alaska Bush when I moved there. Now I use Stihl mostly because at my age I have great luck starting the ones I own and they are dependable.

Echo saws are made by Yamabiko in Japan, the old Shidaiwa co. The're great saws but the parts are crazy expensive. The old timer down the road runs a cs 590 daily and loves it. It's powerful and its light.

Oem parts for Echo saws cost less than Stihl and Husky oem parts. Its hard to find cheap aftermarket parts for Echo saws.

Didn't know this I have owned a couple shidaiwa trimmer never has failed me, that's in 25 years. I used to pray it would quit, used to use it from sun up till dark. Best trimmer ever used and I have Stilh, echo husky, and a few other brands.

@@michaelwolfordr1 Ya they made really excellent products. I misspoke a tad about Echo parts prices, I should have said they seem expensive compared to the initial cost of the saw. I helped the neighbor replace his 590 clutch drum and it seemed expensive to me @ $50.00 IMHO. He paid $380.00 for the saw new.

I agree 100%! I had a Stihl and an Echo at same time. Had to carry a screw driver in pocket when using the Stihl. Carburetor always needed adjustments every 5 minutes or so. Always cursing that saw! I sold it last Summer. Good riddance! I don’t think I’ve ever had to adjust the Echo. Never dies on me! I’m not sure how to shut off the Stihl. Never had to. Just set it down and in about 10 seconds or less, it would turn off all by itself. Lol!

Lmao you don't know how to turn off the stihl . not site what still your talking about. There professional grade saws are junk. Especially the new climbing saw the t201. Freaking junk. I will go up against anyone with my echoo 355 -tand there stihl .a saw that is half the price and way stronger and faster cutting than a stihl .

I own a tree service business and use Stihl only. Maintenance and upkeep is a major part of the upkeep of a saw. Every manufacturer has design flaws here and there. I started with Stihl in 2001 and continue. Some saws are easier to maintain not everyone is capable of doing work on stihls just like diesels. I would love to know what model you has as well as see your maintenance records on your stihls. I also would like to see what fuel you used.

Then you know about the clogged filter . Get a husky or Dolmar and be done.I also have a tree service and use whatever starts and the stihl gets completely clogged with chips and doesen t like to start easy when climbing this can be an issue . All the power in the world but can't get the chips out like a husky

@@jerrybrandt9377 oh sure do know about them but require my guys every 2 weeks generally rainy days to clean up the saws and go over them not because they need it but because I'm anal about maintenance. As far as chips go if you consider that what makes husky best so be it. I look for longevity and reliability. Stihls been putting food on my table and keeping my bills paid that's all I can say. You keep your huskys I'll keep my Stihl we can't convince each other otherwise but if Stihl screws me and I convert I will be the first to admit it. I hope you have a prosperous New year.

I have cut firewood for myself for just over 40 years now, and I've only had two saws in that time. I bought a Jonsered 49SP in 1978, 20inch bar and three eighths chain. I still have it and use it on the bigger logs, have never done anything enginewise other than carb tuning and spark plugs. It's a real go-getter. In 2003 I bought a smaller, lighter Stihl MS250, 16inch bar and three sixteenths chain. Periodic tuning and spark plugs, and new gas filter and line in the tank, twice I think. So I've been pretty happy with my two saws.
