Why I stopped shopping at Bath and Body Works

Did you know how harmful fragrance can be for your health? This can harm your children, pets, family, and your own health. These are some of the reasons I switched to non toxic products. Disease and cancer prevention is my main concern!

Biomedical student here, I can assure you that fragrance may cause a problem for some, but for others, it’s not a big deal and may push individuals to self care treatment as olfactory sensations are calming to them and view them as a reward rather than a chore. And the whole “natural” vs chemical argument is honestly not the best argument FOR the natural side since everything and everyone is made up of such chemicals. Natural is not always better and artificial is not always worse, it just depends on the individual on what works for them AND common trends found in such studies.

Yes everything is made up of chemicals, I hear a lot of people mention “h20 is a chemical!”, the only thing is it depends on a lot of factors. There’s a lot more research on why candles can be really harmful for example depending on if the wick has lead & the artificial scent being lit for hours/ causing the air pollution to go up. I think it’s upsetting for those companies to not at least put a warning for their customers that have asthma or lung sensitivities

Thanks for commenting! In most of the comments I try to encourage people to wear it still but at the same time it is wrong for companies to not be transparent about possibly harmful ingredients. I’ve seen people with really bad asthma have a bunch of their candles & also things like fabreez plug ins which made them sicker & I also know someone with COPD who may be negatively impacted by those type of chemicals so at the same time it’s good to live without fear and enjoy things, but also companies shouldn’t cheap out on ingredients that could be unhealthy for their customers

so there’s some different factors that are a bit hard to touch on since it’s a 60 sec video BUT I agree, I think overall spraying cologne & stuff shouldn’t be a huge deal but I know a lot of people obsessed with bath and body works that have a candle lit at all times and something like that can definitely cause health problems compared to just the sprays. Also if people have asthma or breathing problems, it’s really good to be aware of not over doing it with spray or maybe spraying on clothes instead of directly on skin. There are some things I’m really concerned about health wise but those are typically things where you’re heating things with potentially bad chemicals to a high temperature like with Teflon pans for example. This was a message I left for a similar comment about some of the additional research I found It’s up to each person to do their research, from what I read they do have parabans & phthalates, not sure if they’ve updated that but there’s a lot of potential loopholes with the listed ingredients so it’s hard to say. When I checked out more details about their ingredients, this was some details from an article that caused me concern & upset for those that might be sensitive to these ingredients (children, people with weakened immune systems, those with asthma, etc. etc.) “Fragrance, of course, is what Bath and Body Works is known for. They’ve released hundreds of different scents, from the classic Warm Vanilla Sugar to Iced Raspberry Bellini to Twinkling Midnight Sky, and many, many more. Almost every single one of Bath and Body Works’ products has the ingredient “fragrance” listed on the label. (If you can find one without it, let us know because we couldn’t!) This ingredient is a big problem though. Because of what’s called the “fragrance loophole,” companies are legally allowed to hide about 4,000 different chemicals in their products under the simple umbrella term of “fragrance,” “parfum,” or “eau de toilette.” This is because fragrance formulations are protected as “trade secrets. Many of those ~4,000 chemicals are perfectly safe and harmless. But many others are known to be toxic to human, animal, and environmental health. Phthalates are one example. Most people have at least heard of phthalates by now, and are aware that they are known endocrine disruptors that can have negative effects on natural hormone function and lead to things like fertility problems, cancer, and more. Other categories of ingredients that are allowed to be included in products under the “fragrance loophole” include carcinogens (like styrene, for example), volatile organic compounds (like formaldehyde and toluene), allergens (even naturally-derived ones like limonene and linalool), and other ingredients that can irritate those with pre-existing issues like allergies, asthma, multiple chemical sensitivity, eczema, etc. This means that every single Bath & Body Works product (since they all contain “fragrance”) can potentially contain any number of these types of ingredients and you’d never know it (unless you actually tested it). Parabens Ingredients like methylparaben and butylparaben are also commonly used as preservatives in many Bath and Body Works products. Parabens are known endocrine disruptors, which means that, like phthalates, they can mess with the natural hormone function of one’s body. For this reason, they’re associated with a number of negative health outcomes, including cancer and fertility problems. You’ll find many artificial colors and dyes (listed on labels as things like “FD&C Red No. 40” or “FD&C Yellow 5”) in Bath and Body Works’ products as well. The most commonly used colorants are made from coal tar and/or petroleum and can be contaminated with carcinogens. We need a lot more independent research on the potential health effects of these types of dyes, but many of the studies that have been done so far have linked them to hyperactivity and/or hypersensitivity in children and cancer/tumor growth (from DNA damage and cell mutation). This ingredient (along with other similar isothiazolinone preservatives) is commonly used in cleaning products like hand soap, shampoo, and body wash. Methylisothiazolinone is not only a skin irritant and sensitizer, but it’s also suspected to be a neurotoxin and endocrine disruptor). Bath & Body Works products also contain plenty of ethoxylated ingredients. This includes SLES (mentioned above), as well as “PEGs” and other ingredients with “eth” in the name. “Ethoxylation” refers to the way these chemicals are processed. They’re commonly used in all sorts of makeup and skincare, along with cleaning and beauty products. They function as thickeners, softeners, perfume “dispersants,” penetration enhancers, and more. It’s practically impossible to avoid ethoxylated ingredients 100%, but many conscious consumers may still want to be aware of them. The main concern with ethoxylated ingredients has to do with potential contamination of two ingredients used to manufacture them: ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. Ethylene oxide is an irritant that’s known to cause multiple types of cancer and infertility. And 1,4 dioxane is also a known carcinogen. Since these ingredients aren’t added intentionally, but rather are contaminants, they won’t be found on any ingredient labels. Not only that, but as “penetration enhancers,” they can also increase the how much of other ingredients your body absorbs, which means they can make other bad ingredients (like phthalates, for example) even worse. Ethoxylated ingredients aren’t the “worst,” but they’re not great either. Most of Bath and Body Works’ candles are made with paraffin wax, which is derived from petroleum. When it’s burned, paraffin releases toxins in the air. We won’t dive deep into this part here in this article because we’ve got a separate article about it here. we cannot confidently say that Bath and Body Works is a cruelty-free brand. even though the products made by formulated and packaged in the USA, the ingredients may come from just about anywhere.”

It definitely isn't too serious when it's Lotion or spray, just mainly for me when I'm in small spaces now, I used to spray a ridiculous amount of fabrez for example or sunscreen and then I found out anything that sprays that much can coat ur lungs and be really unhealthy, candles are also something that make me uneasy because of how long they're lit for !

yes I agree! They can be anywhere, I just was bringing it up because a lot of people really really like the candles. For example, myself included, and did not know about that. I totally think it’s OK if you’re aware of the negatives to still use sometimes or to maybe be careful about when you spray it like you’re saying not putting on your skin, but I used to use way too much/ not know. It’s only a problem to me when people don’t know the risks ( maybe someone with cancer in their family would avoid it or someone that likes the candles & has asthma would maybe light less)😁

The people that always tell you what you should be doing, and how unhealthy you are always look like they are one step from dying. It's why I don't take advise from vegans, people that appear emaciated, that have nose rings, face tattoos or crazy eyes. I survived this long with being able to go to beach as a kid and drink a coke every so often. Im going to buy myself a body spray whenever I feel like it, with no guilt or worry. 45 years of body spray and sun, and Im just fine. At least I'm not a perpetual buzzkill. Studies show that lack of sun causes the most deadly cancers and vegetables have oxalates that can cause cancer and infections.... sooooo what about that? Stop eating all food all together?

There's a difference between being aware of things and not being overly worried, I think it's okay for me to point this out especially with candles because that's something I was upset to find were so unhealthy and you're inhaling for hours. I know people with COPD and asthma who use a lot of those artificially fragrance unaware it could make ther condition worse so that's where it really bothers me! If you read any of my comments to people on this vid, you'd see I agree with spraying being okay, it's just good to be aware of especially with young children who are extra sensitive!
