I've noticed that no matter how hard you fight personally for change in politics, you'll always have much more control over your own life. If everyone used their political energy and put it towards growing themselves, we'd all be much better off.

True. I always believe that most of the people that are political fanatics that are the one marching on the streets and screaming their lungs off. Is actually insecure about themselves. They have deep rooted problems that they dont want to deal with and pay attention to stuff such as politics and make it seems to everybody that they are so smart. Its just a diversion to make it seems they are smart but their life are kind of pathetic. Its no coincidence that most of these erratic people marching on the streets are usually those who really arent productive people of the community

This year I quit politics myself. I used to spend numerous hours watching different videos and would stress me out. This year I decided to let go of all that and I’ve found more peace. Politics are toxic. It’s very difficult to have a positive outlook in life if all you do is watch how the world is falling apart. I agree, let’s create our own world and live life to the fullest regardless of whose in office.

In 2007, I gave up television completely. Best choice, ever. No senseless banter or meaningless arguments without solutions. I also realize, with the clarity of retrospect, that I felt powerless, helpless to make a change, a difference. Having given television up, I was free to use my time more productively and to solve issues that directly affected me. I became much more pleasant to be around and thus helped other more assertively and directly. Changed my life. Enabled me to focus my attention without distractions on helping more people more of the time, regardless of their lot in life, culture or location. Which led me to Andrew...

Really one should look at the world the way a 16th century sailor would. They didn't get angry when the trade winds blew a certain way. Under all circumstances, they had to figure out how to use the winds to get where they need to go.

Arguing politics is a gigantic waste of time and energy! I’ve also noticed that those who choose to engage in such idiocy are mostly unsuccessful. It seems to be nothing more than a built-in excuse for people to play the victim. It’s the old adage that “ I’m not successful because of so and so”. It’s precisely this sort of mentality that I find unnerving. Nobody owes you anything in this life, and nobody is a victim unless they choose to be! Circumstances don’t define you in life, but you’re actions to circumstances do! Some of the most successful individuals started from nothing. I’m so tired of the victim-mentality that has become so prevalent in the United States. Everyone these days expects the govt to take care of them! People just need something to complain about and make excuses for their own laziness. I can’t wait to get out of this country! It’s headed down a dark path.

I'm in a similar boat. Since I was in 8th grade I've also really been into libertarianism and politics. I've tried to disconnect from daily politics as well, but I DO think it's valuable to have a consistent ideology at least. I'm trying to be successful, but also want to have educated stances and an arsenal of stats/examples so I can lead by example and better the world voluntarily. I'm a very opinionated person, and we'll see how that changes, but I agree with you it's easy to get trapped into constantly following it. There's nothing wrong with wanting to change stuff where you are, and "if you don't like it just move" won't resonate with most people. It seems like you still have strong political opinions, so I think you've got a pretty good sweet spot.

The point you make about the lower class stepping up rather than tearing down the upper class is quite counter intuitive don’t you think? Saying “just step up” like it is simple is ludicrous, it is nowhere near being that simple. Additionally, if everyone had the mentality of “just step up”, who would assemble the products that business owners own the rights to? No working class means no businesses.

I’ve decided that after the 2022 Midterm elections, I will never follow politics ever again, and that’ll mean unfollowing any political users on Twitter and unsubscribing from news channels on KZread. I’ve been wanting to do this since 2020. Tried leaving after Joe Biden was inaugurated, and I kept getting pulled back in. Tried again after Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court, and failed again. Now I realize the reason why I keep trapping myself into the political landscape is because of the political channels I’m following, and after the midterms are finished, I’m confident that 3rd time’s a charm. When I say my final goodbye to the political landscape, all that’ll be left is bliss. Whatever news is broadcasted on TV regarding American politics, I’ll just dismiss it as hyperbolic horseshit. I’ll form my own opinions, believe what I want to believe. I’ll choose my own truth.

@@nomadcapitalist I can’t believe you are relying to comment on an old video. I remember binge watching your videos, including this, in the beginning and in the summer of 2020.

Hell yes or no, coined by Derek Sivers. I've read old stuff and heard old interviews you've done. You did used to be a lot angrier about it all. Simon is still that way, I think.

Here's another point. In all the ways that matter, there's enough general consensus across party lines that the system, so long as it ensures sufficient continuity for interests of political actors and their donors, and maintians enough pressure valves to vent excess discomfort among their respective constituents, there really isn't an incentive to change things. I'm not trying to be cynical. It's the path of least resistance, and it should surprise no one that so many politicians fall prey to entropy and the same temptations we all face: resting on our laurels, getting a little too comfortable with where we are, and finding ways to justify the things we do, for better or for worse. Here's the bottom line: We have no power to make others better. But we have both the power and responsibility to be better, and, to the greatest extent possible, to vote for people who, according to our best judgements, we be responsible stewards for power. Beyond that, it's all a waste of precious time.

If we all run away to pursue individualism, eventually, what will be left to come back to? This “run away and find my happy place” idea makes sense individually. On a societal level, this is how the world burns. We can't all run away.

I agree that getting swept up into politics is a time-suck. However, there are many reasons why people would want to follow politics especially if you are an ex-pat but still a citizen. Case in point: Trump changed the tax laws so that company that has an American citizen on its board has to pay at least 13.5% in taxes to the US minus any taxes paid to the country of incorporation. This was to chip away at the benefits of offshoring companies. It'll be interesting to see if Biden reverses this though I highly doubt it. Many people I know had to pay much, much more in taxes - that's income at the 50-150k range. He made real estate much more tax friendly. Political shifts could start wars and those wars could heavily disrupt any peaceful place you are living. My friends in Singapore told me what a great place Damascus was before all the chaos. Political events could turn your life upside down. It's wise to always have an option out.
