I think there are some people that read about a process that works for many people, be it a diet, work out plan, way to have gorgeous hair, and they follow it religiously. When they don’t get the results they were hoping for, they keep trying different products, foods, equipment, ect! Sometimes the answer is that it just doesn’t work for them! I think all India is trying to do is support them and let them know that it’s not something they are doing wrong, it’s just a journey to see what works for you! No harm in that!

Former stylist here. You're not losing less hair by using a brush, you're just removing them between shampoos by brushing your hair. When you don't brush between washing, the hairs that your scalp naturally sheds every single day don't come out until you're detangling in the shower. You'll still naturally loose the same amount, you're just getting rid of the shedding hair more often by brushing and therefore not seeing them all come out at the same time. That said, I prefer brushing my wavy hair most days because I hate the amount of shedding I have to deal with in the shower if I don't brush. Do whatever works for you!

Unfortunately that was not the case for me and everyone kept telling me the same as you're telling right now. And whilst for the majority of people that information may be correct, it wasn't for me and i actually needed to go to the doctor because i was getting bald. Switched up my routine and with different products and now I'm starting to go back to normal again.

I think she means she loses less bc finger detangling and wide tooth comb pulls more on your hair. I have fine but thick hair and with a wide tooth comb the comb parts are so still they'll rip tf out of my hair. and same w my fingers I find that i rip less hair out and that a brush (wet brush) is wayyy more gentle and I think thats y its less hair loss.

No this actually completely false. The hair taken out of the tangles dry is actually hair that has been broken off and ripped by your brush and contributes to split ends and breakage. In the shower if you do it with the conditioner it creates a kind of lubricant and the hair coming out is the normal fallout but with minimal attached hair breaking off. It works with just water as well.

  • @Em22214

i don’t brush my hair all those days before washing because my hair is too curly and I don’t like the brush it dry. So at the end of the week if I brush my dry hair out right before I wash it, will that help eliminate the amount of hair fallout in my shower? I don’t want to clog my drains anymore. And I don’t use normal brushes I only use wide tooth for minimal damage/breakage.

CGM rules I follow(2c/3a curl type) -no silicones -no parabens -not washing my hair everyday -sulfate free shampoo+botanical conditioner+alcohol(only fatty) and silicone free gel -microfiber towel/T-shirt CGM rules I don't follow -I use brushes(wet brush and bristle brush when doing a ponytail) -oils(natural and silicone free) -I straighten my hair 1-2 times a year -I dye my hair(not frequently though) -I use sulfates every once in a while, my scalp needs them In conclusion: Don't go hardcore on the CGM, do whatever works for your hair.

I brush my hair. That’s one rule I can not get down with. My hair is way way way too tangley. Even when I brush right before I shower, by the time I shampoo and flip my hair over to condition it’s tangled and I have to brush or finger detangle AGAIN for another 5-10 minutes. And then even after that my hair clings together from the back to the front pieces and creates another tangled mess. Sigh.

I just started using a silicone based hair serum and I can't believe how incredible the results have been! I too have waves that get weighed down, so I'm washing my hair anyway. I use the silicone primarily to scrunch out the crunch, and also to prevent moisture loss with how dry the air is this time of year. It does absolutely coat your hair, but quite frankly, that's something my high porosity hair needs to help prevent damage. Silicone is also a great heat protectant, and I absolutely cannot get the definition or volume I want without diffusing with heat

I was silicone free and sulfate free for years and my hair literally broke off at the shoulder (had nearly waist length hair) and it thinned out. My fine delicate wavy hair knots too easily without the slip of silicones and it breaks off without the coating protection of silicones. Everyone also said to do coconut oil masks and that made my hair brittle and break off too. 2 years into recovering my hair and I am anti coconut oil and pro silicones and my hair is full soft and getting long. I use olive oil and mayonnaise for hair masks. Silicones haven’t prevented my hair from being moisturized properly. It is silkier now than it was sulfate and silicone free.

TLDR: No-poo made my hair fall out, switching back to sulfate shampoo stopped my hair loss in its tracks, and it’s growing back. I don’t know if my story will help you, but while I didn’t use Devacurl products, I DID follow a no-poo method, using Dr Bronners soap followed with a cider rinse, as well as a very lovely-smelling cowash. So basically, my hair fell out in ROPES, and I did think it was a lot, but I never realized how much I was actually losing until one day I decided to pincurl my hair after a couple of years of not doing so. So what normally would take the better part of an hour because of all my hair wound up taking less than 30 minutes. And as I was doing it, I could tell how much LESS hair I had. Wtf?? So in a fit of fear, I decided to count the hairs I lost during my shower (I cleaned out everything first, brush and drain, then put down a fine net to catch the hairs). I was losing almost ONE THOUSAND hairs! The average loss is about 150 hairs or so a day. But even calculating that, I was easily losing much more than average. I took my hair and went to the doctor, had a ton of bloodwork done, and it was completely inconclusive. Btw, definitely keep the fallen hair, because the dermatologist can tell a lot from the root, she was glad I brought the massive snarl. She asked me if there was anything I was doing in my daily life, and I immediately thought of my no-poo routine. So the next time I showered, I used a sulfate shampoo, and of course I lost a lot. But I also decided to wash every two or three days instead of four or five. And by the 3rd shower, my loss was back to normal, just a small amount. It’s been that way ever since. Shampooing is about taking care of your *scalp* more than it is about your hair, and no-poo/non-sulfate was causing my follicles to be gummed up and thus causing hair loss. Or so I think. But it’s recovering, and I do follow some of the CGM styling tips. Btw, I’m Caucasian, menopausal, with what I think is 2b/2c hair, but it’s getting curlier as I get older, it used to be just somewhat wavey.

I've been avoiding the silicones but I don't even use this much product when I wore it straight, so it's been a struggle. I don't even remember using this much product when I had perms in the 80s. Co wash is more for women who has coarse hair like myself who’s hair tends to get dry through the week. It just helps put moisture into your hair until you make it to your wash day. Because obviously our hair has low porosity. That’s who it was made for. It’s made to replenish moisture to your hair. Ppl should be cleansing their hair with sulfate free shampoo once a week unless your hair falls more under the kinky type. So looking from your picture of your hair is high porosity and it’s easier for you to get moisture into your hair then you should not be co washing. Your hair can not take all of that product. That’s why your hair would get weighed down so much. You’ll be fine if you had your wash day and as the days go past just refresh your curls with water and reactivate the product you already have in. Therefore you get your volume and a little bit more moisture then if you need a little bit of extra product just use a dime size amount of leave in conditioner and cuff it on to your ends and continue your regular routine. Idk of you use a blow dryer or one of those natural gels to cuff your ends after the leave in. But lastly let it air dry or blow dry on cool whatever you use then boom. You’ll have the moisture and volume you want. From your picture I can tell co washing is definitely not for your hair type.

L L if you can’t tell by the eye if someone has high porosity or low porosity hair then you’re dumber than I would figure. Y’all make stuff harder than it really seems lmao. Here let me break down for you in a realistic way so your brain can play catch up because obviously this woman herself admitted she had low porosity hair because her hair takes up too much moisture to even use a co wash.... because anyone who knows curlyhair products... knows that’s co washes are thick as fuck and not so much water based. AKA MEANING THEY WERE MADE FOR TO PENETRATE WOMEN WITH LOW POROSITY HAIR. That’s like saying you pick up a hair product from the shelf and then as you’re looking at the product you’re testing it to see if the product is thick or more water based. I can tell from this woman’s hair that moisture for her is easier to penetrate her hair vs a female who is a 4c or who has my texture.... so sorry to tell you that’s common sense. So what you’re saying is bullshit. The shit isn’t rocket science which is why so many females were lead wrongly. Listening to all these supposedly “curly gurus” who don’t even listen to their own hair. Instead they’re going off of what’s trending so whoever said you can’t tell if someone has high porosity or low porosity just by looking at their hair and taking estimate guess knowing what products will work for them is a got damn lie. Stop listening to the media. It’s common sense. I mean .... HOW ELSE YOU THINK MY HAIR IS FLOURISHING??? I stopped listening to the media. Have a nice day. Yes, yes, and yes. You're practically my hair twin and I started the CGM a few years ago after getting a pixie cut thanks to an incompetent hair stylist (highlights gone bad) So I started over and embraced my natural and it was great for a while. But my hair is really fine and thin and almost like yours in every way. But now it is below my shoulder blades and weighted down. Using curly approved "shampoos" and conditioners made it look dirty ALL the time, and limp, and flat. I had to change products all the time in order for it to have any effect anymore. I also can't NOT brush my hair. Like you said, it seems like I was shedding WAY too much and that is because all of my shed hair was being held in place by my curl pattern and they all came out in the shower. So brushing before washing meant my shed hair was coming out in my brush. Its just not meant for oily fine hair.

I mean, I use a low-poo and I occasionally use a wide tooth comb, but I still consider myself following CGM. I feel like the most important rules for CGM involve choice of ingredients in products: no sulfates, silicones, waxes, drying alcohols, etc. I also feel like CGM is more of an overall lifestyle rather than something you can never deviate from - kind of like if you normally eat really healthy but you eat cake on your birthday and on your family’s/friend’s birthdays, you know? Having cake once in a while doesn’t make you unhealthy, and overall your lifestyle IS very healthy, just like bending CGM rules once in a blue moon isn’t going to undo all your CG progress, you know? So I don’t stress if, for example, I’m traveling, forget a product, and have to use a silicone conditioner until I get home, but overall I’d still consider myself as following the method. Just my thoughts I guess! Edit: I also didn’t know the curlygirl handbook banned all alcohols? That’s def true what you said about drying vs. fatty alcohols, and I guess why it’s always better to understand the science behind an ingredient instead of blindly following blanket rules! One of my pet peeves is when people say something like “oh this product was so drying for me, and no wonder! It’s full of alcohols!” And I’m like “GIRL those are all moisturizing, fatty alcohols!” 😑 end rant 😂

I totally agree with starting with CGM to learn what your hair REALLY needs. Once you get that figured out, you can discern which rules actually benefit your specific head of hair. Due to hard water and the fact that my hair was constantly over moisturized even with the lightest conditioner and tons of protein, I've started using a harsher shampoo and don't care about drying alcohols. But if I hadn't been through the CGM, I never would've figured all of that out or restored my curls after years of straight up neglecting my hair.

She explains so many important, useful & helpful things regarding all types of curly/wavy hair that most stylists either don’t know or have forgotten since being in school. Abby Robinson, I definitely will! Right now I feel like I need to go back to my normal shampoo. I’m trying really hard to hold out though. But I feel like I need to wash my hair more so now since I’ve switched shampoos. My hair gets super oily very quick with the sulfate free shampoo I’m using. It literally looks like someone poured baby oil in my hair after only two days. I had only been washing my hair twice a week as it was. But now I feel like I wash it more because I stand the oil and the flatness of it. It’s very frustrating.

Ashley White same with my hair, i really wanted to try the cgm but when i did, i didnt notice amazing results that lasted long. Although, 1-2 times when i washed my hair it turned out amazing but I might try going back to my pantene conditioner and shampoo and seeing how it works !

Evelyn Chao, that’s the problem I’m having. I’m going to have to wash my hair soon and might just use my regular shampoo and conditioner. The cgm is an awesome thing I think. It’s just not working for my hair personally. My hair is very curly naturally and also very thin. I just hate that it looks so flat while trying to do the cgm. Being so thin sucks enough without it looking so flat all the time. I need some volume! 😂

My hair gets flat if I don't sulphate shampoo every so often. I used a sulphate shampoo once or twice a month (sometimes more, sometimes less depending on what my hair needs). Maybe play around with doing a sulphate shampoo every second or third wash?

I'm exactly like you!! I do follow a lot of the cgm rules like I try not to use sulfates/silicones (but ngl I do occasionally use a sulfate shampoo to get rid of build every now and then) and I also HAVE to brush my hair, I've tried finger detangling and combing before and it just doesn't work for me. I have very thick hair that gets tangled easily so I need a brush. I also have to wash my hair with shampoo, I wash my hair with shampoo like once week and then cowash every few days. There's no way I can just get away with cowashing all the time, I've tried it before and just cowashed but it really weighed my hair down and I got a lot of build up. Thanks for making this video btw, it's nice to know other people don't follow it religiously because I felt like I was the only one! 🤣 Also your hair is looking SO pretty and voluminous!!!

Ever since I started following CGM, I’ve done a modified form of it because I still like coloring my hair on occasion. I’ll use a sulfate suuuper rarely, but that’s because I get buildup easily. Also gonna highly recommend you check out Olaplex 3 India! It’s mainly to help build bonds back after dyeing hair (currently rose gold myself), but it’s also so awesome for general hair maintenance. I believe it’s $28 at Sephora so it ain’t cheap, but the bottle really does last a while.

I dye my hair, but I have super fine hair and I've found when it's dyed or bleached I really prefer that texture. Also, you're still losing the same amount of hair. When we stop brushing and combing our hair the hair that naturally falls out every day just stays in with your curls. It has a lot harder time finding its way to the floor. Brushing allows you to get all that hair that naturally sheds every day. I also had to go back to condish with amodimethicone in the winter.

A lot of my hair faded into the not blonde not brown color especially the underside, the top gets naturally bleached by the sun and returns to a true blonde in the summer but no matter what, I always have this one streak of hair right in the front that stays bright baby white blonde and never matches the rest of my head. Makes braids look really cool tho

I completely agree, that volume is better than hard looking curls. I have watched so many hair videos in the past year. I have learned that I want a simplified process that has fullness and soft curls. Letting my hair grow out layers has not been as simple or cost saving- because of looking for more volume and body on straight to wavy hair. I think steam curling, or a wavy perm will be simpler and less worrying. Thanks for your upbeat and funny videos.

India, you have such a sparkling personality and you are a joy to look at. Your videos are always a real pleasure. I dye my hair and I use sulfate shampoo to get the dye out, so when I know I will be dying my hair and using a sulfate shampoo, that's the one time I use silicones ha ha! Great video - thank you for your refreshing honesty.

Thank you for saying this!!!! My hair is very, very similar to yours. I love to wear my hair all different styles. I have fine hair as well and that’s why I quit the curly girl method a little over a year ago. Plus it was honestly frustrating and kinda overly strict. Having a million products to purchase and use gets to be too much. I’m a simple person. However I’m going to try the curly girl method again only to see if it helps with my dry wavy/curly hair and helps damage from using the curling or flat iron often. But girl I’m totally with you about the sulfates. When I didn’t use them, my hair became so limp. I need a sulfate like once a week to really cleanse my hair. I think there is pros and cons of the CG method 100%! 💕

I am on the beginning of my curly hair journey and am doing lots of research but started the CGM. Two weeks in and holy cow I have ZERO volume anymore. I feel like my curls looked better with the volume even though it was slightly more messy and less defined. Hopefully I will find a good routine soon!

For a period of time I would only brush my hair before I got in the shower and occasionally right before bed. But I had a lot of hair shedding out onto everyone and everything. I've learned now that if I dampen my hair with a spray bottle after I brush it and fluff it up a bit or scrunch it and maybe even gently put an oil in it then I can brush it and still have some kind of defined wave or curl after.

I'm thinking about breaking away from the cgm. My scalp is always dry, my hair is always frizzy n I've spent about $80 bicks on products that don't work!

  • @xuephyre3225

I plan on starting the cgm by investing into some shampoo and conditioner made for curly hair and a curl defining cream. I've switched to a drying my hair with a cotton tshirt to lessen/prevent frizz and I've switch to cool water to wash my hair. I've had curls when I was younger practically loose ringlets and as I got older those just turned into waves. As of right now, I'm just scrunching my hair and putting in my it's a 10 product and my waves have become much more wavy. I'm 2a/2b hair type.

Nobody's curly hair is the same as another's. Honestly I think my hair looked better when I want so conscious of using silicone and sulfates!! We try to improve what's already good and it's like ruining a perfect recipe. So I think the curly girl method is just fine for those who like it yet it can be tweaked to fit each individual. Thanks for the video India.

I am so happy I am not the only one who feels this way. Like I remember when I started my curly girl method I watched you, the Glam Belle, and Bianca. After my hair was damaged severely by bleach and it came back and I was discovering my curly hair again. The curly girl method was NOT working for me and I felt so guilty because like you and others I was a follower of it and im so happy you guys are speaking out on it! Like thank you. I still shampoo my hair I also tease my hair for extra volume, I brush it, I diffuse and occassionally use heat.
