Why I QUIT Software Engineering.
Ойын-сауық

I have spent 7 years and thousands of dollars in getting my Bachelors and Master’s degree in software engineering. Done 4 internships during that period, Grinded Leetcode for 100s of hours and now I have just left all that behind and quit software engineering for good. Making this decision was grueling, the sunk cost fallacy really hit me good. So why exactly did I do so ?

I'm quitting my job and flying to tokyo to persue my business in robotics, I don't have the luxury of savings or being able to go to my parents. So if I am crazy enough to do this with legit nothing but a degree and software experience. You can do it too ;)

Tokyo be expensive O_o. I heard that remote areas in Japan are cheap, you can homestay in Japanese homes in the countryside but they won't want to teach you Japanese since they want to learn English from you haha. Me I built a language learning environment for Chinese, but still frustrated at how much better language immersion tools could be. I wish I could partially translate automatically all messages on discord so I can practice Chinese while on english places for example, there is DEEPL/QTRANSLATE clipboard translator so I can google and find videos in language I'm learning, but I wish I had a chatGPT clipboard tool so I can get multiple auto-completion options for my butchered mixed English/Chinese sentences. I wish I had a continous convenient OCR for hardsubbed videos, and good real-time transcription (mine is very inconvenient).

Why Japan? Where are you going to find VC?
You will never forget your fundamentals and can always go back to code if you need too. If you have the drive to try something different you should explore that with confidence.
Man I totally relate to the reasons why you quit. I'm literally seeing the same path, I want lots of kids, a wife that stays home and takes care of them but having a 9to5 won't get me there.
Dudeee, im in the same boat, im mexican and thanks to software eng i was able to live in the USA, with a work visa. This year i returned to mexico cuz i just fucking hate the way of living in the USA, its a golden cage. I earned more money but ended up spending a lot of it. Last year i got a new mustang GT 2023, my dream car and guess what I felt lonely as fuck. Thanks god a hail storm fucked it up and the insurance just paid for the car and got me out of debt. Now im in mexico and after 4 months of looking for remote opportunities now I'm working fully remote making less but also spending alot less and ive been loving every single day, im more free here. Trust me, You will succeed.

i feel you on the whole seeking autonomy and freedom. im leaning toward that as well which seems more about having a couple routes of income at this time, rather than solely 1. i also study front end web dev but im now thinking how i can spread my wings into other domains maybe start a fitness channel that revolves around bodybuilding/aesthetics, strength training, and veganism something man. although being rich would be nice, i want autonomy and financial freedom first and foremost which doesn't mean i have to necessarily be rich. SUBSCRIBED!~
Thank you for sharing your experience I’m in boot camp for software engineering and pursuing a PhD in psychology soon. 🕊️🙏🏽✝️🕊️ I’m from the USA 🇺🇸 our taxes our high in most states there are some states with no state tax.

Your main mission seems to be getting rich, getting rich is fucking hard and depressing sometimes, unless you go the illegal way, most people who are actually doing the things they love and are happy aren't rich, they are just okay, which is fine to me.
@Arbiteroflife

Yea, the reality is the vast majority of people won’t get rich. I think maybe 10% of people in US and Canada will ever have 1 million dollars, and 90% of those people are probably over the age of like 55 or something.
good luck friend
I am gonna try to grind for a few more years and switch completely to agriculture tbh
A family with a single earner who can support an entire family while the other partner is stay at home parent is not traditional. Only a single generation was able to do it lol

As a senior software engineer in a poor country like Hungary, Central Europe, I can also earn enough to live a comfortable life on my own. I have enough savings at least for 6+ months of expenses. I can buy anything I want in a reasonable way and reasonable desires. I don't need to check the prices in the grocery store.

People from other major change to software engineering this guy is changing from software engineering to other stuff now that's something 😌☕
Wow! The next "self-made youtube millionaire". Why didn't you stay on your job growing your channel until it made sufficient money to reduce hours on the regular job? Another - better than this - option would have been to freelance or volunteer on psychology, neurology related projects on github. Also, you are not supposed to stay on internships and junior positions for the next 30 years. You are supposed to progress along a career trajectory. Seriously, bro, that hashtagselfimprovement stuff is for hot chicks in skintight yoga pants, not you.
good luck man🙂I wish you the best

What language(s) did you use?
It depends though, software engineering on robotics is the next level
Getting rich by trading your time for money is a fallacy we all live in. Most of the software engineers will be replaced by AI. I’m glad you got out before it’s too late.
The reason i got into software engineering was to eventually get enough experience to start my own sas. I’ve just started the final phase…
So are you a millionaire now? Or what are you trying to do to become one?
you really don't need to highlight every single word. im not that dumb.
Generally I don't subscribe. But I did because ur ambitious on your goal
I was brainwashed into believing that I am supposed to be a productive member of society and not worry about becoming rich because...what for?
Keep us posted. I am interested in robotics. You can give me an unpaid internship
I feel like it would be easier to change the the mindset that makes you want to be rich rather than enjoying life. Money is like the seasoning of life but is not the main course. I guess if you are only passionate about being rich then that is sort of following your dreams? haha

Nice video
"bachelors + masters +4 internships" for software. Overkill and paints a picture. Definition of working harder not smarter...something that will get you booted out of the industry pretty quick.
good luck,
If you've built a skillset with code, why don't you look into more creative avenues with using that instead? I do love the story though brother

you want to be an entrepreneur. thats the only way, unless youre like Stanford phd level in ML/AI

Wait... $100-200K isn't enough for you to live? Your issue is greed, sir
Try to make an honest video where it's hard to tell you're reading from a screen and not speaking naturally. They come across much better

He's never been to Canada. It is just camera work !!!
SDE is dead. The last good run was back in 2018. From tech, to hiring process, to bad engineers and a failing economy, you are expected to be a rockstar FAANG engineer for a job that a 9th grader can easily do if not better. Follow your dream for sure. But if you still just want to do a job, do anything but IT. SDE/IT will eat your soul out. My brother has a $200K job. It burned him out. He quit and worked at Subway for $50K, saved up, franchised his own subway and never looked back.
the plan would work if you were in the USA and paid 300k per year.
