Why I Prefer Living In Madrid Compared To London

Hi guys welcome back to my channel! Today I'm going to be talking to you about personally why I prefer living in Madrid to London. After living in Madrid for about a year, it really allowed me to look into the two different ways of life and although both cities have their pros and cons (and I do love living and being from London), it was a really easy choice for me.

    The people can’t be better looking when the population is like 99.9% homogenous unless you are only able to see beauty in white Spanish people which would make sense then. But honestly I don’t know a single famous Spanish ig model. Also the people are 100% not better because again, there is no diversity so no way to experience other cultures and behaviours. Everyone knows the uk is way better, the food is superior due to, you guessed diversity 🤣 the cities are ugly, you have a bunch of tourist places in Madrid that Google shows you, everything else is a city which was held back for decades because of fascism while the world around it grew and modernised. By the way I’m Spanish born and bred, try live here for more than a few years, and you will start to see how it’s beauty is just a layer of cover up makeup. When you can’t find a job because there are none and you get bored of Spanish food and fachas everywhere you will return home quick time 🤣

    Totally agree. I live in Australia which doesn't have the terrible weather experienced in London. But the fact is Australia is no where near as exciting to live in compared to Madrid. Concerning bars, restaurants ,food in general which is amazing in Spain, streetlife, nightlife, museums, old world architecture, culture , public transport, high speed trains which don't exist in Australia etc.... You do have great beaches but so does Spain. I also like the fact that most people in Australia live in low rise houses and not apartments for the most part. I also find the majority of Aussies to be quite friendly and the working conditions are generally great. And the purchasing power in Australia is definately higher than in both Madrid and London. Your videos are very honest and informative btw. All the best in the future.

    Funny you mentioned the fruit! I never hear it mentioned, but when I, a Spaniard, move to London some years ago, I was appalled at the fruit when I first tried some tangerines over there. Granted, they were from Sainsbury's, but they felt like licking an old man's face. Had to buy my fruit at Waitrose (and nothing else because I was absolutely broke), as that was the only place where fruit would have some flavour. Fruit here is generally much tastier, especially if they are local grown. London has lots of amazing things that I absolutely loved, but its fruit ain't one!

    As a Londoner, I've had the pleasure of visiting Madrid several times. Madrid holds its own appeal, but in my opinion, the two cities are worlds apart.London stands out as the premier city in Europe, with its enormous size, 9m population and cosmopolitan flair. It serves as one of the major hub for business, education, banking, and fashion of the Europe. While I might be biased, the only city I'd compare London to is perhaps New York. However, despite its grandeur, London can be prohibitively expensive, bustling, depressing at the same time and not particularly family-friendly due to its high costs and fast pace. The weather often leaves much to be desired too.

    Free tapas in most places with a drink, like in Madrid, is a small snack, a small plate of olives, for example, you can’t eat a proper meal just ordering drinks. You need to ask for raciones which you have to pay for, price depends what area or type of bar, or you go to a restaurant, but still much cheaper than UK, especially London, which is ridiculously expensive for everything. Also have the fantastic menu del día, which is a 3 course set lunch menu with a drink or coffee included, available all over Spain, including Madrid, which is very reasonably priced, 10-15euros.

    Thats a good question! I haven’t lived in Barcelona so it’s very difficult to compare as I am just an outsider looking through a tourists lens! To me they both seem like a metropolis full of culture which is something I love. Perhaps Barcelona has to trump London here! It’s got the best of both worlds - a city and a beach in one and most of the Spanish weather benefits that Madrid has. Although that’s pretty surface level as I don’t know much more about the city/culture than that (although I would love to one day). I hope you enjoy your trip!

    If you come from outside Europe come to London if you are in your 20s. No other city on earth come close. Then in your mid 30s move to Madrid if you want to settle or have a family. Quality of life is very high and with a decent job you can have a very easy, elegant life. Spain in general is great for kids. I’d personally choose another city in Spain maybe by the coast but Madrid is the capital and a big city so coming from London it makes for a nice transition

    It's hard to compare UK and Spanish trains. Don't get me wrong, the latter are cheap but you can't book through-tickets in Spain (this is really bad) and almost everything revolves around Madrid. The UK train network wasn't built like this (centrality) and it really shows. We also lost a fair chunk of our railways during the 'Beeching Axe' in the 60s. We also don't have the luxury that Spain has with regards to building high speed railways. We're much more compact here, with far less open space between cities and I believe we have stricter planning laws too. Ultimately if the trains were so great and affordable in Spain then buses wouldn't be so popular. They're as I'm sure you know, massively more popular there than the UK.

  • @aimeeweekestravels

    @aimeeweekestravels

    Thank you for your insight! I actually don't know a whole lot about trains apart from their prices haha so this was definitely an interesting read! But you are very right about their buses. I think part of it is Spain's government is uber-centralized so they have lots of leverage in requisitioning the land for high-speed trains. (you are right that high-speed trains take up huge open spaces, especially when they turn) The fact that all the lines are centered around Madrid instead of, say, having one along the Mediterranean coast, definitely feels "on purpose"

    I lived in London for 12 years, i can confirm weather is not that bad, does not rain as much as people make it sounds like and yes there are less extreme temperatures. Also you can get anything you want in the materialistic world if you have money and yes earning that money is somewhat easier. After living and working in Madrid only a year ,i can say everything she says seems to be true. my working hours actually the same as it was in London, just there you got 30 to 60 minutes for lunch, in here i get 2 hours, that makes the day longer. While i had a year in London when did not see the Sun from October till March, now im having a picknick in the Park everyday and i got some nice tan even in the winter months (2022). Also London is too big, often did not see friends for months because did not have the amount of time to travel around and spend quality time. Here the city seems much more managable, i don`t even use a car /motorcycle to go to work, i cycle because its nice.

    Only me think that Madrid is a very noisy city? I've live in Madrid for two months now, my apartment is just at a corner of the main street, 1st floor, the traffic lights is just outside of the window of my bedroom, the riders of the motorcycle reboot the engines and go away when the light turns on green, the terrible sounds of the engines have driven me crazy, The unique horns of fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars resounded in the sky day and night. Plus all other kinds of vehicles pass by every minutes. I was bombarded with noise all the time. I sleep with earplugs at nights, escape to cafes or restaurants at daytime, unfortunately, the cafes and restaurants are normally on the side of the roads, there are the same noise everywhere. Noise is a big problem of this city. But I look that others seem play it well and are not affected.

    I look like you! Have you ever experienced any racism or prejudice at all? I’ve heard of people staring at people of color and other little slights. Please let me know!! x

    Yes, Spaniard, born and raised ashamed to say it, so I just say I’m half Nigerian and British. All Spanish people will tell you Spain isn’t racist. But bro I’m like you too and I’m telling you with hand on my chest that is the biggest fckng lie ever. For me growing up there was hell, made me hate my self, my sister had some really nice braids the first day in secondary school. She came back crying and removed them sobbing, that’s all I’ll say. in Spain, people will give you bad looks, people will yell “negro” and “go back to your fcking country” from across the street, they will come up to you, touch your hair without permission and laugh, compare it to a lion’s mane, invade your privacy, ask you if you like Spain more than Africa… I cannot name all the experiences you can have, they’re too many. Also search up VOX, Spain is the only EU country with a semi-Neo nazi party with quite a lot of votes, that should tell you a lot. My answer is absolutely don’t study there, you have better options. But if you want go ahead, this girl was lucky to have a good experience, she also only stayed for a year, more than that and she would have 100% had a traumatic experience, in Spain it’s always a matter of time. Obviously not everyone is racist, but generally yes. If you decide to go, as another minority my best of wishes, if you have these experiences don’t force yourself to stay, don’t let them hate yourself like they did to my sister for years. Just leave, fck uni your mental health is more important than a diploma. Hope you consider this good luck🙏🏽

    Hi! I mean unfortunately everywhere you go there are going to be people who have prejudice! I only had a few security who were watching me carefully in the shops, but other than that I thankfully didn't have any problems. The only thing you can do is brush it off because you are in no wrong by being in a space!! x

    But there's the ONE thing you didn't mention. The unbearable hot summers. From Early June to early September, (whole 3 months) I chose London over Madrid every day. Do you really know what it's like having to live with temperatures above 35 °C and week long heatwaves of over 40°C?? See, you Britons have this romantic idea about Spain being a place in the sun, that southern paradise of holiday and leisure time. But that's not the reality for daily life spaniards.
