why I’m not getting more bookings on italki | italki teacher life #8

I’m not reaching my full booking potential on italki and here are 5 reasons why I think that’s the case. I don’t have any super-secret methods, but I hope you can learn from what I could be doing better or what I am not doing at all. This video is specifically about italki, but the same ideas could work on other teacher marketplace platforms like AmazingTalker, Preply, Verbling, etc.

Great advice. I think it's worth adding that the pool of English teachers on Italki is really large and competitive, so it's just normal to get less bookings than someone who teaches German for example.

@The Vegan Polyglot That's a good point to consider. I'm curious about the ratio of learners to teachers for each language on italki. I'm pretty sure that English is the most commonly learned second language, so it makes sense that there are so many English teachers. The ESL market is definitely saturated right now though.

Have you heard that The English schools in China had to close, so all the laid off English teachers had to go online. For the French tutors, it's also saturated on italki

Mark❣️Koala Web design SEO Yeah, I was personally affected by the Chinese Ministry of Education regulations. I used to teach on a Chinese platform (VIPKid) before starting this channel and switching to italki/Cambly. The double-reduction policy mostly impacted online teachers and after-school tutors. I have some friends who are still living and teaching at schools in China, though. 🤷‍♀️ It was a really unexpected change of policy and there has been so much uncertainty as a result.

@@classableesl oh I didn't know that it impacted online class like VIP kids, I thought more Chinese had to go online to get English lessons. Interesting 🤔 it means Chinese students can not learn online anymore?

@Mark❣️Koala Web design SEO Well, Chinese children can learn online if they use a VPN to get around the Great Firewall. italki is a Chinese company (registered in Hong Kong), but they were not affected because they are not a kids-only platform and they operate on the global market. It is very convoluted and there are loopholes.

Great video, as always! I have to say, your point about out of class communication was really interesting. I do it sometimes but I'd never really thought about going out of my way to do it! I've followed the advice in your video already but never really had much success with italki beyond my first month when my profile had the highest visibility. I'm just not sure that italki is a viable option for teachers in 2022 unless we're willing to charge around $10-15 USD and hour. Even for fun money that's not enough when students expect prepared lessons and after class feedback/homework. It makes me sad because getting accepted to teach on italki was always a big goal of mine. ☹

@English with Erica I'm sorry you haven't been getting the success you're looking for on italki. I think a major factor in bookings is which secondary languages a teacher speaks. Some of my students have found me because they want an English teacher who speaks French fluently. Part of it is luck, too. My trial class is $9 (so $18/hour) but for my regular lessons, I don't go below $20/hour, minus commission for conversation lessons and $30/hour for grammar lessons. So, maybe my rates are a bit steep, but that's my limit, personally. It seems like you're making it work through independent tutoring, so that just shows that success looks different for each teacher. ☺️

@Alex Tighe I'm near Toulouse, so we're practically neighbors. I honestly don't know what people would pay for in-home lessons and I hadn't really considered doing it because of COVID. One of my main concerns about my Italki description is whether to write in English (universal language) or Italian (the language that i teach). I've started writing in both languages but then i found out my description was too long. Now i've switched only to English. Is someone having the same "problem"?

@Ranulgio - Learn Italian with me Obviously, I don't have any personal experience with your situation, but I had an idea that might be worth a try. Maybe you could write mostly in English with just one part in Italian, like a challenge. You could write a complicated sentence in Italian and then something like "If you can read this, sign up for my Italian literature lesson." Good luck in 2022!! ☺️🥳

As a student using italki I find it helpful when I see someone write a bit in their native language (helps with reading practice) - you could maybe just write in Italian in the ‘About me’ section and the rest in English. However a tip: when writing in English make sure you check the grammar. If I see bad spelling mistakes and the teacher has listed their English as ‘C1’ I’m less likely to book them.

@@italianyourjourney Yes just a little, it gives me an idea of their teaching style/personality. If they don’t care or notice the mistakes for their own work especially if it’s on their profile. Then I think they won’t correct me on my mistakes or is not a good teacher. A video and profile is what students go by to know what kind of person this teacher is before handing over their money for a lesson. So it’s important to have a good first impression. Especially when languages like English, Italian, French etc has loads of teachers a student can choose from.

Availability, follow up, self marketing in community, price... But low prices attract not so good students, not serious students who jump on the cheapest one, who don't show up, who don't care of your time

Mark❣️Koala Web design SEO Right, I agree with you. That's why I said not to list your price super low, but to offer more competitive package discounts. Price factors into the student perception of teacher quality. I would never advise teachers to charge less than their time is worth. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@classableesl Thanks for your video. I want to make videos too about italki, when I see teachers going down to $5 or 8/hour to get students I'm sad 😢 finally their profile is FULL of 1 class students, like 100 classes with 90 students... It gives the signal that this teacher can't keep his students so he must not be a good teacher

  • @classableesl

    @classableesl

    2 жыл бұрын

@Mark❣️Koala Web design SEO Yeah, there are so many factors involved. I think the "teacher marketplace" format inevitably leads to some teacher finding success and others not as much due to classes not being evenly distributed among teachers. Sadly, some teachers might not have the skills that students are looking for. I think a teacher's hourly rate is highly dependent on location because teachers in countries with lower cost of living can charge less and still support themselves. I'm not sure if there's a perfect formula for determining what each teacher should charge for a lesson. It's a very difficult topic. You should definitely make some videos about teaching on italki. There is a community of teachers on YT who want to see this type of content. 👍

@HumanDrillBit The main difference is that community tutors are restricted to opening conversation and general language lessons while professional teachers can also do business and test prep. I think students often expect more structured lessons when they choose a professional teacher. I always have a lesson plan, even if it's just a list of questions for a casual conversation class.
