Why I'm Not Buying Physical Silver

This video covers why I'm not buying physical silver. I bought silver for 11 years before deciding against it. I do hold SLV at the moment, but I buy physical gold primarily and some bitcoin. This isn't an argument for why you should do the same - it's simply a few reasons why I've decided to do what I do. Thanks for watching!
NOTE: I am not a financial planner. I'm just a guy on the internet, talking about precious metals. Always do your own research before buying gold or silver.

I like the idea you're disciplined, and if buying silver keeps you that way, than drive on. You have enough money to buy gold, you just won't be buying that much. You put $100 into silver and a $100 into gold, you still have a $100 in each. Don't get me wrong. Not a gold fan at all. I love silver. I think you're wise in buying it versus gold.

I like silver too. It is still a good way to store wealth and it's tangible. I started buying silver back in the early 2000s when a 1oz silver round was 15 dollars plus premium. Plus it's a great way to stay focused and motivated to save. Good on ya!

  • @SalivateMetal
    @SalivateMetal3 жыл бұрын

For many of the reasons you mentioned is why I have focused a lot more on gold since 2017. Premiums have certainly increased this year and it makes it difficult to see any return if you need to sell. However, I am bullish on silver in 2021 because of green technologies and the ever increased versatility silver adds in the industrial/tech sector. I think in many ways, it's irreplaceable in those uses (at least until graphene is widely adopted). Though there is plentiful supply, it is much more rare than copper and demand I think will increase which could lead to the narrowing of the GSR. How that will translate in premiums to buy is my guess not much less. They will continue to be high making it a very long term proposition for the strong stomached of silver stackers. My tummy is weak, hence why I focus more on gold. But, I am still optimistic for silver. Thanks for the discussion and for sharing your reasons so well! Happy New Year

@@JohnThompson-hc8bd Other goods or labor. I can agree in some situations gold and silver might be useful after an shtf situation. But honestly I feel like in some situations it's going to take a while before precious metals regain their value for a few reasons. 1. You can't eat silver, silver dosn't give you light, or heat your home. Silver provides no intrinsic value. It derives it's value from being rare and pretty. 2. How are you/other parties going to verify that silver is real? If it is truly a really bad situation there's no way to verify that silver/gold isn't just some other metal plated in silver/gold. Now to play the other side of the fence, I can definitely see how in some situations gold/silver would be a great idea. In a hyper-inflation/deflation it is possible that precious metals will retain alot of their value compared to your countries currency. Also in say lesser disasters where the power grid is still up and many businesses are still functioning it will still retain value. I also believe that in the years following a disaster (provided we can recover) I believe it will regain it's value. Honestly I don't think it's a bad investment so long as you diversify and don't put all your eggs in one basket. I believe the scenarios where precious metals retain their value are actually alot more likely to happen as well. I believe that the most likely shtf event is going to be another great depression. That's just my thoughts on the matter though.

@@Zoroaster4 continuing with the SHTF theme, I recommend constitutional silver coins as they are very recognizable, fractional and not easily counterfeited. Now if someone passes off a plated gold or silver coin it could come at a very high price at the hands of the recipient, at least in my area of the world. I also recommend having food, water, shelter, lead and other barter items for SHTF and your run of the mill depression. It’s good insurance. Also, people are very specialized these days in their skill sets and will have to devise some system of exchange and PMs will only be a part of that. IOUs from trusted community members my also be a way to exchange and become a form of money in the short term. It’s hard to say what will take in your area or mine. Silver will at least 2-3X if we continue to kick the fiat can down the road making it a good saving vehicle. I wish I had saved all the silver coins when I was a kid. I would be much better off today than I am. Thx for sharing your thoughts.

Gold is a great investment but so is silver and I am also sticking money in crypto, even though I think that ship may have sailed as far as serious earning potential goes now if you've just got on board. One thing's for sure, with the way they're all pumping money into ailing econimies, fiat currencies like the dollar are finished. Why I collect gold? It is unique. No other precious metal on the periodic table has the colour of gold. It's does not tarnish and has low reactivity. Only highly concentrated nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and aqua regia, a mixture of the two acids I mentioned dissolve gold. Gold is very valuable. There is more profit to be made from gold and it is the number one metal investors flock to in times of uncertainty. I love gold but as I mentioned I always feel I am being shortchanged when I buy 1 ounce of gold because a 1 ounce coin is very small. I feel I should have a 5 or 10 Oz coin for the price I pay for that 1 ounce.

Happy new year to you too!! Always good to hear some counter arguments to stacking silver. Silver is indeed more of hassle than gold. Personally, I do hold some silver but I only buy up until the average price I pay including premiums (!) is at most 75% of fair value as a margin of safety. Then the question arises what fair value is. For that I use the conservative fair value metric of Lyn Alden for gold and divide that by the 20-year average GSR. According to that metric silver right now is just a little over fair value, not grossly undervalued as many claim. There is considerable upside potential though. As I value silver indirectly from the amount of M2 per capita, a similar overvaluation of silver as in 2011 would take it to around $90-100. If it will reach that, I don't know and even if it does, such a spike is usually very short lived. But still, my aim is for silver only to be about 12,5% of my precious metals holding, divided over physical and ETF. The ETF-part is to be able to make use of a short lived spike in the price IF that occurs (a sort of right tail risk hedge, if you will). Concerning the nature of silver as a commodity, I would like to point towards an article by Jan Nieuwenhuijs: seekingalpha.com/article/4373933-warning-misleading-silver-supply-and-demand-data In this article he explains that silver isn't trading like a commodity, i.e. that there is no correlation between price and demand/supply, as it has a high stock-to-flow ratio. There is several decades of demand for silver in above ground stock, and at the right price that stock turns into supply. Due to this high stock-to-flow ratio, estimates vary from 20 to 45, silver trades more like a currency, albeit due to its small market cap a small currency (hence the volatility).

Great point of view I have been thinking about the premium cost all year after being able to stack with low to no premiums for awhile then to 20 to 30% premium costs have been a hard pill to swallow. I to like 10oz bars and have bought a few in 2020 but most my funds went to gold in 2020 maybe 70% At times I think I went a little savage on gold but listening to this has kind of reassured my reasoning on my gold purchases I’m not out looking for validation on my purchases it’s just nice to see and hear other point of views instead of the same old (silver is under valued ) mantra I keep hearing out of the community. Gold is at its high which is a hard pill to swallow as well . All markets are high right now and makes it even harder to know where to put your money But I feel pretty safe with gold . I started watching your videos a while back and realized that my reluctance to buy gold (considering the price differential with silver) could be overcome with dollar cost averaging and the purchase of fractional gold coins. The premium for fractional gold was still a deterrent. I chose to, instead take the money I would spend on fractional gold and make a monthly bitcoin purchase. My intent was to use the bitcoin to purchase a one ounce gold buffalo at the end of the year. I have enough bitcoin to purchase 3 buffaloes. Now I feel nervous to make the purchase. Will it be enough to buy a tube of buffaloes in 3 years?

Historically silver stays low in economic hardship while gold climbs in price. Only after a couple years does it suddenly skyrocket in value as it stabilizes with the gold/silver ratio. I dont expect it to be rising in value soon. Probably not even in 2021. But because the low cost and pandemic, mines are closing due to the fact it costs more to mine silver than to sell it. But because it is such an industrial metal, stores will start to run low but the manufacturers have no choice but to buy it at an increasing price. I have a strong feeling silver will spike in value in a year or two.

Great video! I appreciate the creativity you put into the presentation of it all, very well done! As far as your thoughts on silver, I’d have to say I’ve swung in the same direction, sorta. I’ll still plan to buy silver in 2021, but only if I feel it’s at price that’s too good to pass up, with the premium included. I’ve also shifted to buying silver as a means to “lock up cash” and “hopefully” grow it, to then buy more gold with it. I flipped a lot of my silver into gold this year and it was at a decent profit. So, I now plan to use silver as a tool to get more gold. Seems to be working...but only on the few occasions when the “stars align” just right!

@@2is1gold Hey! Speaking of locking up cash, something you may or may not have heard of when poking around the crypto sphere (depends on how deep down the rabbit whole you went), is DeFi or decentralized finance. There are crypto protocols/projects that allow you to do more than just buy their digital token and hold it, in anticipation of it appreciating in value, but allow you to earn passive income from them. This is from something they’ve termed as “staking” or “yield farming.” Think of it as sort of savings account on steroids with some having APYs from 40 - 2,000%! I know...seems scammy! Most are scams, but a few are developing as very legitimate. Very high risk, but of course high reward! Worth looking into, since I feel 2021 will be a very transformative year in the crypto / investment space.

I even notice it on eBay, there's listings for very popular silver pieces that stay up much longer and I'm seeing more and more gold running out faster, I'm noticing the shift myself. Gold is a slower process but It builds up in a short amount of time. Don't underestimate the potential of silver, silver may be frustrating, but it will have its day.

Alasdair Macleod revealed this recently and really made me think about the true value of silver. I'm expecting Basel III to have a major influence on the markets in 2021. Happy new year!

I thought Basal III only pertained to gold?

I could be off, but I thought the same as Robert. Banks use gold as a reserve asset, not silver. Am I missing the point?

New subscriber. I fall into the numismatic category. I know I’m paying an arm and a leg ... more likely to buy graded silver over gold coins. That and you know if the vampire werewolf thing pans out I’ll be covered

I definitely have to give this video a like, for the simple fact, your honest...I have to say I do appreciate this video and, it’s always good to see a different outlook in the world of precious metals. I do get your take on the premiums on premium silver, but if your stacking for weight only and don’t want to pay that high premium, generic silver is always an option.I look at this Au. & Ag. game as the turtle 🐢 and hare 🐇 ...silver is lower than it’s all time high, with a lot of room to grow,to me that sounds like a good investment...I like both metals and being diversified in both metals to me is smart ...But the great thing about this community is that we all stack with a different opinion and strategy and it’s interesting 🤔 hearing other opinions...keep up the good videos and God Bless.

I try to spend about equal on both and always find a way to avoid payin a cent over spot, im curious of opinions in this senario considering how often the argument invoves premiums being the catalist

I too am mostly buying gold. To silvers defense however sometimes it's premiums increase. In 2017 I bought eagles for 2.50 over spot & generics for 40 cents over spot. I sold some this year and got my premiums back plus whatever the base metal gained.

Yeah, I bought silver up until 2020. Premiums prior to that were a fair amount lower. Cheers!

Silver coins as a commodity is the same regarding the premiums as if you buy another commodity like petrol and you spend 20% in the barrel to keep it in your garage....said that I like coins, and I like and enjoy collecting with my kid we have fun together...also Im not selling anytime in life unless is absolutely needed so Im sure is a great thing (savings..not investment) that I enjoy. If you want to make money there are now better options...100% agree. Also Gold is a no brainer, tier 1 asset...is a time capsule to put your fiat value over decades and keep it probably with same gains then...but is not its purpose, its purpose is backing your wealth...as banks do...I have few gold coins..but men..too expensive to do a collection to look at and hold in your hand...if I could I will put 40% of my fiat in Gold all day long..but lots of bills every month😂👍

I'm not sure how bright it is to buy something at it's all-time high vs something at half it's all-time high. Hmmmmm

@@barbaradimascio4623 yes but if you do for long term not an issue, however with silver the math is simple 80 oz of silver carry 300 euros premium and 1 oz of gold 95 at equal value. Now also we can say the opposite in gains...80oz of silver if silver gains 10% makes more than 1 oz of gold, but with silver you loose more from the begining...said that, I stack both.
