Why I'm Buying The Original Xbox In 2021

Ойындар

The Original Xbox turned 20 years old the other day and it was an impressive system when it released in 2001. The modding scene has continued to grow for the Xbox, but now a new modification for HDMI has made the system much more current for 2021 and modern displays.

I still use my original Xbox to this day and I have just given it some TLC as I had to remove the clock capacitor that was leaking as well as the 3 large capacitors near the PSU that had also burst. I also replaced the rubber band in the DVD drive. I have an OSSC so I have no need for an HDMI modification for the machine, and while I can solder, micro-soldering is beyond my limited abilities. I am surprised you didn't mention the clock capacitor issue in this episode, it's definitely something people should be aware of when buying original Xbox consoles.

Keep the lightening skin. One of the Xboxes that I just bought in a lot for repair had a MP3 playlist from the early 2000's, stuff like..Linkin park/Mudvayne/Korn/POD...it was pretty awesome to listen though it, thinking what it must of been like at the time to load it up for the OG user. I was in my early 20's at the time of the console launch, so it was like a time machine for me too. Great video, I think you really hit the point as think thing being a really good answer to PC gaming. I was a console gamer from Atari 2600-PS1 and then moved out and was in that part of my life, got into PC gaming because I bought a P3 for college work and skipped out on the release of the Xbox. I did pick one up around 2004 from my room mate...played mostly Halo and Ninja Gaiden before selling it to get a sweet new white 360..

Hate to be that guy but the hard drive is actually my least favorite feature retrospectively because the hard drives inside are dying now, saves are getting corrupted, and you can't backup your save games. It's a real problem going back to enjoy the system now unlike the Ps2 and GameCube which can have saves copied across memory cards for protection. The 6th generation is by far the oldest generation you can easily hook up to a lot of modern TVs without modification and with generally good results. Component output options on most of the systems, and (even better) the VGA output option on the Dreamcast! And a few DC games even had the option to set a widescreen aspect ratio, since the system didn’t know whether it was on a widescreen TV or not (there were some 480i and 480p widescreen TVs in the early days, but no handshaking that communicated that to the game console). But, yes, HDMI-only TVs are becoming more common so mods like this will have more and more value going forward. But I have been gaming since the first generation (still have my old Pong clone that you hook up to the TV with an RF modulator!) and I appreciate that it’s possible at all to hook many of these 6th-gen systems up to many new TVs still, with the Dreamcast over VGA producing a progressive signal making it (I think) the oldest system to be able to do so without modification.

I don’t know if this had to do with the Mortal Kombat movie or OG Xbox games in general but I know Shaolin Monks went up in price a small bit but then it went back down again. I don’t see Xbox games getting near as expensive as GameCube games. Everyone had a GameCube as a kid and these prices are nostalgia driven as those kids are now 20 years older with disposable income. I really don’t think a lot of kids had Xboxes back then and it was mostly people who were already enthusiasts. It is a great system if you want to collect games to actually play them instead of trying to have a collection to resell later on.

Do you have any recommendations for soldering in new joysticks on the og xbox controller or the 360 controllers? I bought some off brand but they are bad, and the original are not repairable or have insane stick drift

Plus, multiplatform releases are almost always the best on Xbox. Which is hilarious: bargain prices compared to PS2 and GC while being the best versions, sometimes to a generational degree (Splinter Cell, Just Cause, etc).

I remember moding custom DVD drive to backup games to upgraded HDD and Ive installed external USB port so I can hook up any USB things like keyboard, mouse or usb storage to move divx and other media easily between PCs/friends. Made it my home cinema multimedia player/console. Great box ahead of its time back then!

I will still be using my Neoya X2VGA+ to my XBOX. It did work very well back in the days and still getting the job done now. My plans for my XBOX is upgrade that 120 gb hard drive with bigger one and do proper deep clean on it after it has been in storage for around 10 years. I have removed that leaky cap in it. No damage lucky enough. Nice video!

I snagged one a couple of years ago because the Goodwill Outlet was selling it for $5, apparently the orange ring of annoyance at not having an AV cable plugged in was confused for a RROD. Snagged a near mint condition Duke controller, a beat up enough to test cable, bringing it to about $15. Scored a mod chip and gave it a full cleaning (and clock cap removal). The DVD laser merely needed a quick cleaning, and it was golden.

I bought a xbox that was softmodded with Unleash X and given a 1TB SDD hard drive. I don't have the technical skills to make a hard HDMI change, but I did the the component cables AND a top quality HDMI converter - both of which look fantastic. I installed most of the games in the Xbox library onto the hard drive. I still own all of my original game discs and boxes (over 40 in total) from my days playing it originally. However, having games installed directly to the hard drive without worry of disc read errors or maintenance and NONE of the money of buying a physical disc ever going into the hands of the creators anyway, i have no remorse for downloading the remaining titles I don't own physical copies of.
