The problem with minimalism is the idea that people hold in their own mind. It’s not about living like Kim kardashian or living out of a backpack or only owning 33 pieces of clothing. It’s having what you need, what you use and what you love. I am a minimalist but still hold on to my cd collection because I love it. My pillowcases don’t match and neither does my decor. It’s a mindset over an aesthetic but people don’t tend to see it that way because we are really only exposed to extreme minimalism. There are no rules, it does not have to be rigid or cold. You can own 55 t shirts if that’s what makes you happy. But don’t own 85 shovels when one will serve its purpose just fine. Ya know? Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted talk. 😊

"I am a minimalist but still hold on to my cd collection because I love it." there is no "but" there. it makes perfect sense. you can have bunch of stuff and be minimalist, if you actually use all of it. if you have a garage, it should be stocked with necessary tools, and not just one wrench because it's minimalistic.

exactly! it’s a lifestyle centered around having things that add value to your life, whether that value is in the item’s utility or not. people have the wrong idea of what minimalism is and then go off from there, when in reality it’s not having a sterile black and white house with no decor.

Minimalism isn’t supposed to be an aesthetic so many people get it wrong. It’s about owning only what you love/need and lowering your consumerism in areas of life that you don’t personally find joy in. Some people do take it far, the opposite of maximalist. Both are fine ways to live, but yeah, for some of us it isn’t a trend. It’s not an aesthetic.

Yesss! Minimalism isn´t black or white. There are many definitions and everyone interprets it differently, but in the end it´s really about lowering consumerism in certain areas of your life, as you said. For example: someone who loves books (or T-shirts like Sarah does) can still collect them, but in other areas of life you just decide to only buy what you really need/use/love. And it hasn´t to be something expensive as Sarah mentioned, just stuff you enjoy 100%. Some can afford high quality items, some choose sustainable products or buy second hand, some still buy "normal" stuff but more thoughtfully ("do I really need this in my life?"). There are so many options to bring more minimalism into your life and NOT because you follow an aesthetic lifestyle, but because you want to find joy in a few things, and not in clutter.

Exactly, that's what I take from minimalism, questioning what I consume and what I actually want to own. Because it really is just stuff, and I don't want to be drowning in things that don't serve me and weigh me down. And I also do not want to buy things I don't need or want and waste resources on them in the process. But I think it is important not to be too excessive about it, because then again those objects take up too much of your life when questioning their pupose every second of the day.

Minimalism as a lifestyle isnt the same as minimalism as an aesthetic. Its about being mindful about what you buy and keep in your home. That can look a million different ways, and yes it can even include 50 T-Shirts. Its keeping things that "bring you joy" and not things that do not. If you look further into the minimalism community it is pretty down to earth. Kim Kardashian and viral van girls dont represent minimalism.

I also tuck away all my clutter in drawers and boxes. I wouldn’t consider myself a minimalist as I have a lot of stuff but I like them a room looks kind of empty and soft. It gives me a sense of calmness and cleanliness when a room doesn’t have lots of colors or clutter. When I see a room that has lots of colors on things I get really nervous. I can’t calm my mind. Hey Sarah! I very rarely leave comments and have learned a lot from your fast fashion videos and really respect you so I hope this doesn’t come across the wrong way, however, it sounds like you’ve only gotten the ‘aesthetic’ end of the stick when it comes to minimalism. I identify as a minimalist and am a KonMari die hard (not sure what else to call myself lmao), but I have 50+ band t-shirts, collect vinyl, have a full bookcase, and have things like statues from the collector’s edition of some video games because I love them and they make me hugely happy, etc. Minimalism is not about an aesthetic which is a common misconception, it’s about owning only things you love and truly value. My home isn’t all white and pristine or perfect and tidy all the time as that’s not realistic, even for those on social media who only portray that aesthetic, but it’s real and ‘normal’ and I find real comfort in having only the things I love and appreciate otherwise I feel overwhelmed and can’t function well. It’s not about feeling ‘superior’ because you own fewer things, for me and people with a similar, it’s truly about feeling at peace and not overwhelmed in your surroundings 😊 Hope this shines a bit of light on another side of minimalism!

I'm absolutely not a minimalist but I didn't feel like she was at all bashing real minimalism here. If anything she's praising the philosophical concept and criticising the people who treat it like a trendy or "ideal" aesthetic/lifestyle and misunderstand what it actually is. As someone with a lot of stuff because I'm secretly a dragon guarding my precious hoard of things that make me smile, I am often treated like my house is a pigsty or akin to actual hoarders just because I have a lot of stuff. Most of it is on display/visible, not just sitting around in piles (except when laundry gets backed up) yet I was actually reported by a repairman as "living in filth" just because he didn't like that my place isn't open clear spaces and empty tables. My landlord even confirmed it for me. It's that judgemental mindset of "you have a lot of stuff so you're gross/materialistic/lower class/morally corrupt" that she's talking about being a problem among people calling themselves minimalists, not the true mindset.

I see this narrative a lot and it's kinda becoming a pet peeve because minimalism isn't a style or aesthetic contest to own the least amount of things as possible or live in a clean white room with no furniture, its a mindset of being more aware and concious of your belongings and purchases. I naturally became minimalist after graduating/moving and realizing how much crap I had that I have no real use for so I've been trying to donate those things to people who would get value from them and enjoy it.

I don't have a lot of money and minimalism is the reason i can buy better things now. Quality not quantity. And I also have nicknacks simply because i like to look at them. They bring me joy so there is no reason to declutter them. I don't know if you're only talking about very extreme minimlism, but most minimalists have things that are just there because they bring joy( If the things bring joy they fulfill a purpose) And you also don't need that clean look to be minimalist. i have colorful walls with colorful pictures on the wall and i don't like white furniture. Almost the exact opposite of the minimalist style. Nevertheless i have very few things and rarely buy things. Minimalist Interior style and minimalist lyfestyle are two different things for me. I never comment on videos, but this video came off really defensive from my point of view. I understand the minimalism aesthetic that you are referring to; however, there is a lot more to it than that. As a minimalist, I surround myself with the things that serve me and bring me joy (just like you mentioned), but I also think about it in terms of quality over quantity. Just as I try my best to not consume fast fashion, I also try to consume things that make me happy and serve a purpose in my life rather than fading and passing trends. In a world where many people are over buying because we are sold this idea that we NEED all of this stuff, I try to buy with intention and purpose. I think we are so caught up with labels and putting things into nice tidy “boxes” that we forget that just like almost everything else in life, minimalism falls on a spectrum and looks different for everyone who strives to be more minimalist. I also wanted to mention that as someone struggling with OCD and anxiety, it feels icky to hear minimalism talked about this way when I feel that for my personal health, a more minimalist lifestyle serves me well. Anyway, just thought I’d share a different perspective.

Everything I have fits in my home and it’s always tidy and clean. You don’t have to have an empty house to be a minimalist. I mean why are you going to own like 20 pieces of every piece clothe? 20 pairs of shoes? 20 jewelry pieces? 20 different eyeshadow palettes? 20 different shampoo bottles? 20 pillows? Are you really using all that or just buying it because you like to have things around? I don't consider myself a minimalist by any means but I try to buy and own only things that I truly need, use and enjoy. I live by the beach and is devastating seeing the amount of waste people create and end up in the ocean. That made me reconsider my lifestyle. I don't want to be selfish and buy all the things just because "I like it" knowing that I'm contributing to the waste.

As someone who has multiples of many thinngs you specifically mention, I have lots of stuff because I like and use it. While some people may only have a few outfits and be fine, one of my favorites things in life is dressing up in different clothes, so my wardrobe is expansive. I like to change up my appearance. It's fun for me. Therefore even though it looks like a lot or too much to most people, I actually do get use out of each and every item I own and don't go through my clothes quickly enough to generate waste, because I only buy what I really love and I donate or mend instead of throwing clothing out. I also collect various things like enamel pins, dolls, pieces of art, etc. because I love to decorate my home with what I like to look at and don't like seeing empty wall space. As for shampoo, unfortunately some of us have hair that acclimates rapidly to formulas then starts acting up after a month or two and have to rotate between different kinds 😂 Just a different perspective to consider from the more thoughtfully-maximalist side of things :)

I think this is actually what the video addresses. Why is owning 20 things of some categories bad? What makes you think that person isn't using them? Why are you judging? I for once own many books, because I read them, like them, use them. I don't care if I don't really need them, having them brings something positive in my life, not something negative. I think mindfulness is more important in obsessing over numbers.

@@thatbooknerdoverthere7899 And apparently you missed the point of my comment. I'm not a true minimalist and I think achieving that status is almost impossible but you can't deny that we as a society need to reconsider the impact that mass production and a consumery lifestyle has to the environment. Not only the number of products produced have increased with time (and natural resources are being used and depleted) but also the amount of waste we produce. Let me tell you I also love to read and I used to collect physical books (almost buying a new book every week) but now I read online and I force myself to buy physical books just when it's a series that I *really* like and want to add to my collection. I understand that exciting feeling of buying new books but after reading them they are literally just sitting around collecting dust. Why did I have to buy all those books when I could have read them on my phone? Just becuase I like seeing them? And what about all the waste that makes? I now I can't change your mind and that's not my intention but we have to stop being delusion about the ecological footprint of a materialistic lifestyle. As materialism and consumption are closely related, there is also a relationship between materialism and consumer ethics and I just said that I'm trying to be more ecologically ethical with my consumption because I believe that an individual consumer can make a change if we are part of something bigger.

minimalism the aesthetic and minimalism the lifestyle isn't the same. of course, people that try to gain an audience on social media are going to make their spaces look good, that's the way the internet works. but in reality, it's only about owning what you need and or items that you truly value. do I need five pans all the same size when I only live with one other person? probably not, I really only need two. do I need six pairs of shoes when I only wear three of them? no, ill donate the other three. it's as simple as that. minimalism the lifestyle has absolutely nothing to do with the way something looks. there are no strict rules for it, and you can own nicknacks tf lol. it's about keeping the things that truly mean something to you and not just buying things for the sake of buying them, or without really considering it first. actual minimalism is anti-capitalist, the minimalist aesthetic is capitalist, however. you don't need to spend a lot of money to practice a minimalist lifestyle, minimalism doesn't mean that you can only purchase items from specific expensive places. anybody who claims to be a minimalist and tells you otherwise is an asshole. and if you don't vibe with a minimalist lifestyle that's completely okay, there is no shame in that!

Thank you so much for making this. And another aspect I don't see mentioned a lot is how alienating this movement can be to people with certain mental illnesses. For me personally my bipolar and depression has ALWAYS manifested with focusing on what I'm doing wrong with my environment. When I've been at the depths of my depression I cannot declutter and tidy and I always felt like such a failure seeing how "easy" it was for other people and how wrong I was for not being neat all the time. Also with my OCD deciding whether to keep or get rid of things takes hours and hours because I just overthink and become obsessive. It's exhausting and not something everyone can just do in a weekend. It would just paralyze me. And on top of that the notion that if your house is clean then your depression magically vanishes. Same thing with exercise. Like yes those things can aide in a healthy lifestyle but they will not solve mental health issues on their own.

I spent a lot of money collecting things. I actually feel just as good enjoying a lot of things without being a collector. I have a million hobbies that are more fulfilling, cheaper, less anxiety inducing, and I don't have to spend any extra time decluttering. It's all about why you're doing it. I lost touch with why for a little while and bought things I didn't need. I no longer want some of the things, but I will never get my time or money back. These things brought me very minimal joy. I do own a decent amount of things, but I only own things that I love. I just love more physical things than most minimalists. I am comfortable with my balance.

The principalof being intentional with our purchases and belongings can apply to anyone with any number of objects. Trying to reach some sort of aesthetic number of objects you own all to label yourself a minimalist is very shallow - and I don’t think the idea of minimalism is shallow at its core. Use the core principals as a tool to enhance your life in some way and I don’t think you can go wrong.

I like to think minimalism is a spectrum. While I by no means have little belongings, I like to think that I carry a minimalistic mind set. A few years ago I took a look at my spending habits and my need to just have a ton of stuff for no purpose at all. So I decluttered big time and no longer buy non essential makeup (I only buy things that I run out of like foundation, concealer etc. I have enough blush and eyeshadow to last me a lifetime). I was hoarding makeup big time and buying all the new releases. Now my last Sephora purchase was December 2018, and I was Rouge for years. I rarely buy clothing, and only keep things in my closet that I wear. I stopped buying shoes. I LOVE decor and home decorating so I have lots of decor on “useless shelves” because that’s what makes me happy in my space. But I do not keep extra decor stored away. Only what’s out and what I love. If I no longer like something, I sell or donate it right away. But I also try and not replace things unnecessarily. If I have something that’s functioning, but I see something I like better, I tell myself I don’t need it. I also love holiday decor so I have bins upon bins of it in my basement, but again, only stuff that gets used. Anything that doesn’t get used one year, will go on Facebook marketplace and find a new loving home. I also do not keep junk in my closets or drawers. Everything is organized and only what I need. I’ve saved so much money, and I like to believe it’s a form of minimalism.

I feel ya on many of these points. I wanted to be a minimalist and boy did I try. I've heard ALL the pro-minimalism arguments. And I fully convinced myself they were all true, and it was the answer for everyone. It actually gave me more anxiety about purchasing things because it HAD to be the absolute BEST purchase, if that makes sense. Talk about decision fatigue and pressure. And then there's guilt when you realize you did buy something and don't end up liking or using it. Being a bit of a home body and an introvert, I was kind of left with a feeling of "well, now what?" Once I got rid of things. I realized all I really accomplished was an emptier living space. And honestly that can feel hollow..and boring. Maybe if you spend a ton of your time traveling and not being home, you wouldn't get so bored with your empty minimal home. Idk? Years later, I regret getting rid of some of the stuff I did. I've had to repurchase things that I thought weren't 'bringing value' to me 3 years ago. 🙄 It didn't 'free up time' to spend with people (still an introvert). Your home should feel homey, that deffinitely looks different to everyone and that's totally okay. We can all live and enjoy our lives, how many things we have generally doesn't matter all that much. It's just not that important. It almost contradicts itself: because if things are not what is important in life, than why would it matter if we have many or few.

I totally get why people don’t do it and I agree with a lot of your points. I am privileged and that’s partially why I’ve gravitated towards minimalism. A few bad aspects of minimalists I've seen over the years, just to put some arguments (since you just judged her without any): - Minimalism is too object oriented: people focus too much on how many possessions they have, or rather don't, simplifying for them becomes a new obsession. It's not about owning, it's about having less and less and feeling a better person, a superior person... Because you own less stuff. This is the bad kind of minimalism to me. - Judging others: entering someone's house and seeing they have way more things than you, and thinking "man all this clutter their mind must be a mess". This is such a popular thing I've seen minimalists say... How wrong it is to equal objects to mental health? Leaving outside clear signs of unwellness like hoarding, a person who owns few possessions who equals owning more than them to mental illness? Jesus, the preachyness. And yet again, this kind of minimalist is focusing too much on objects to be a healthy minimalist. - Many minimalists think the only way to be mindful with buying things/doing anything really, is not doing it at all, being a super minimalist. Isn't this just avoiding a problem, if there is one? Let's say someone is bad at budgeting and buys on impulse... Will become a minimalist help, just stopping buying and obsessing on owning less and less? Shouldn't there be a more mindful approach? Minimalism is not for everyone and can lead to rebounding to bad habits. Minimalism treated as a cure to bad spending habits/shopaholic-ness... These are just a few points, but there are so many negative approaches to minimalism, not talking about them is absurd. And people have a right to say minimalism is not for them, doesn't mean they're automatically shopaholics that are getting defensive, lol. These kinds of accusations are part of the problems.

The title and theme of the video is why I will never be a minimalist. It's basically a treatise on how to do minimalism wrong, I wouldn't be that type of minimalist she describes. There's absolutely nothing appealing about the kind of minimalism practice she is describing. She's also left out all of the benefits of being a minimalist, conveniently. Pretty one-sided video.

i don't see minimalism as that... for example, my roomates always have more stuff than me simply because I pass on clothing/makeup etc I don't wear and use regularly. I do it because stuff stresses me out. Clutter stresses me out. Choices stress me out. I like to use what I have. I have a lot of shoes for a minimalist though and that's okay because i wear them. For me it's all about being functional and practical and also not depending on certain stuff.

personally i like minimalism because having just the basics and being really selective about what i buy helps me keep my space really organized and clean more effortlessly, like it’s HARD to make a mess and i love that. Also because it gives me so much anxiety when there are too many things around it’s like over-stimulating

There is certainly something to be said for owning fewer things, and valuing them more as a result (taking the time to fix things, instead of just buying new). I will also never be a minimalist, I also still have CDs (they're a great way to support artists), but I do strive for organisation.

I'm sorry but this video comes off like a disclaimer because you're afraid that people might ask you why you still collect all this clutter when you talked so much about sustainable fashion. I definitely agree that minimalism is not for everyone and that there are people that "convert to" minimalism for the wrong reasons/ways. I think the video would be better and feels less defensive if it's focused on the latter with more substance.

I feel like that's my "minimalist" thing. I read e-books now since I feel like it's better for the environment (and Kindle books are cheaper). Looooove this video. I think about minimalism a lot too. During the lockdowns/stay at home orders, I was so proud of my inventory. I could craft, create, sew, play, eat, exercise, clean, do "closet cosplays", and so much more without ever going to the store, due to the fact i don't have a minimal inventory. When we had a hurricane a few months ago and my internet remained broken for a while, i could still watch shows and movies because i own them on DVD.

It gets on my nerves to have stuff like Christmas wrapping paper around me all year when I just need it once a year. Obviously I don’t throw it out but having to have it around me bothers me haha. If I could I would literally throw out half my flat...and then with time notice all the things I then would not have cause I thought I would never use it and threw it out haha It’s a dangerous game

I'd be interested to see someone dig into the rise of this aesthetic alongside the rise of housing prices (for in cities, often very small apartments or shared living situations), and the impact of domestic labour mostly falling to women. Less stuff is often, practically, less stuff to manage. I think it'd add another dimension to the very real & pertinent discussion of classism.

(tw suicide) I was stuck in a rut of minimalism when I was super passively suicidal. I saw a video of a guy that said he wants only biodegradable clothing so that when he dies he can just decompose completely. I was stuck on this channel of a woman who lived out of a backpack and I felt as a disabled person that minimalism was the cure for feeling like a burden on others. The "Swedish death cleaning" method emphasizes thinking about when you die, and how much trouble you want others to go through getting rid of your things. Looking back on it, that was very disturbing. Minimalism I think can become very unhealthy in this culture where suffering is blamed on the individual. I now see that there is no such thing as a revolutionary movement that is purely individual. I am an artist, and I am allowed to draw and paint and keep sketchbooks of everything I've drawn. I should not have to only own things that are profitable.

Minimalism ruined my life. I still have severe anxiety over having too much stuff, even food in the fridge. I used to own funko pops and other things, but with minimalism my entire life became “what can I own instead of what I own to cut down the amount of items I have”. Essentially it’s like a puzzle piece no one can truly win. Because it’s racing down to a zero you will never reach.
