another point of view - my wife and i have had two x 3 month stints living in Amsterdam (we swapped our house in Sydney twice) and we found it a superb place for a city (and I'm generally not a great fan of cities). Maybe we loved it because we weren't working and could sleep in on cold mornings, and plan our days with no time constraints. Cycling, museums, Concertgebouw several times, Amsterdam bos, generally exploring by foot and bike. Not to mention the Dutch people's grasp of English language makes it a breeze to strike up conversation over a beer on a canal

Good points but most of the things are because its a old city and limited in what people want to have changed in that city because the nostalgia is what draws in people. Most of your complaints are solved just outside the city and with public transport being good and also paid by employers (because its also tax deductible) that would be a better living experience, cheaper as well.

yes it is correct the toilet facilities for women are indeed deplorable compared to all public men toilets. Housing is and was always a problem in the city and finding an affordable (bigger ) house completely. We still visit Amsterdam regularly but now we prefer living in the countryside and in a half hour drive we are right in the center of Amsterdam.

As dutch living for many years in Switzerland, I think that Expats have always a struggle in a foreign country. My 2cents are that in an international city these are less big in terms of finding contacts but bigger in terms of finding a place to live, since al international cities are expensive. And the housemarket is not only terrible in the Netherlands but in almost all countries in Europe, the US or Australia. I really asume that living as an expat in the Netherlands is not that difficult, at least not more then in Frankfurt, Paris or Stockholm. Dutch are generally quit open and talkative and interested in other cultures and yes they are direct, but not more direct then in Berlin or Tel Aviv. If you coming from a very different culture like India or China then surely a western country can be more challenging.

Amsterdam ain't got nuthin' on Montreal, bad weather-wise! lol When I went in 2018, the Northeast Atlantic seaboard had been pummeled by Nor'easters for 4 consecutive weeks... An ice storm hit Montreal 2 days before I was supposed to leave. I arrive in Amsterdam, the whole city is in bloom, full, green leaves are out (the buds hadn't even come out in Montreal when I left), Spring started. There were a few rainy days, Kingsday itself was cold-ish and there were a few droplets in the morning but the rest of the day was super nice. I must have been blessed, because I now know that it is very rainy there, but I'd definitely take that over the extreme cold in the Winter, and the extreme humid heat of the Summer in Montreal!!

You know, the weather is pretty mild, like it never get super hot or cold for long. It's mostly kinda meh but I find that actually pretty comfortable for everyday life. I mean, weather in Rome or Madrid might seem nice at first but when it's like almost 40 Celsius for like a month and you are not a tourist but actually have to work it gets old really fast. Because of the meh weather the city also smells relatively fresh most of the time. Like smog is not a thing, you hardly notice petrol fumes or anything so the downsides have their upsides too.

Amsterdam gets pretty much the rainy weather of England across the pond. As for my experience in 2015 I got a 2year resident permit but left after 6 months due to no contract work for self-employed (Software Dev), Ducth subtle racism (I noticed on Train Rotterdam to Amsterdam white Dutch people will not seat on train next to non-white or if non-white seat next to one they quickly get up) , and also discrimination in hiring (companies often post they only need native-English-speakers for telemarketer jobs. Meaning no Nigerians, French, Norwegian, Swedes, Dominicans , African-nations etc ) . In all it was a beautiful place but the people & experience not so much .

Also, there are places where you can leave your bike with security. If you park expensive bikes on the street overnight that is waiting for trouble. The weather it's bad yes (especially the wind/rain combo) but what push me to move somewhere else in Europe was the housing situation. Housing is insane in the Ranstad region but specially in Amsterdam and not only but mostly expats are caught in the middle of it since most dutch are property owners or have a mortgage. The housing crisis is really a tragedy for many people living there and it's just sad for a country that does many things right in terms of social policy. Most expats are struggling to pay crazy rent prices for tiny apartments, because it's really difficult to get a long-term contract job and be able to access a mortgage or better rental agreements. The problem here is the lack of housing because most of society and goberment turns a blind eye on the issue. Most housing been built is for luxury apartments for the already well off, meanwhile affordable housing barely gets built.

Most of what you listed can be said of lots of popular cities ie: lack of public toilets, reliable contractors, affordable long term housing (air bnb is ruining rental markets everywhere, not just A'dam). There is no bad weather, only bad clothing. Buy some gloves and suck it up like the locals. I lived there for a couple of years back in the eighties. I had a cheap bike with a big chain and never had an issue. As far as the reputation goes, it is gradually getting better as the city cleans up and becomes more family friendly. Why should you care anyway? You know that you live in one of the coolest cities on the planet. Myself, I would lean into it: 'yes, that it's exactly why I live here, because I love drugs and hookers and I can't wait until my current high wears off so I can get high again and go to the red light for dildo sex.' Anyway, I know you have more reasons to love Amsterdam, so that's cool. I just don't think most of your hates are unique to it. Tot ziens!

I don't leave my car also not open nor my house. 4) All Expat people have this urge to live in Amsterdam: Heyyyy sure that has an influence on prices... And there are a ton of other pitoresque places to live with better prices: Utrecht, Leiden, Groningen, Den Bosch, Haarlem, Den Haag (but not so much because of governemental international workers) etc. etc. etc. 5) cobblestones vs high heels: OK the pin needle heels are NOT a thing in the Netherlands: if you like to live in an authentic place it has a cost.. cobblestones !! 6) Every one likes to have an university degree and because it does not take a life loan to study in NL many people do... so the handicraft jobs where real skills are required are very sought after.. these people have tons of work! So they get sloppy... So if you want to move to Amsterdam and wonder what to do? Be a handyman... there is a real living in that! If you are a professional that really knows how to fix things..! Keep the videos coming! But maybe show some other parts of Holland? Or even in the Netherlands.. huh??? Is there a difference... yes there is :)

@@aWanderlustForLife : If you like to bike a bit near Amsterdam i can recommend a tour around the “Nieuwkoopse plassen” these are lakes and moats and canals and a lot of water MAN MADE because of centuries of digging out peat to keep the fires burning in Amsterdam and the other big cities. Nowadays it is a beautiful area with bikable paths and roads around it. A full circle is maybe about 10 - 15 km and there are places to rent ( electric ) bikes. It is beautiful!

So i bet you didnt know that. Somethings might be spiteful or even hated by one person. Whilst the same thing offers a solution to another. That being said. The idea that while out & about, one might need to regale themselves of a visit to "la toilette" and hence seek out a food & beverage establishment and vis-a-vis..., patronage; avail themselves of both temporal & corporal relief, is a bonafide norm.

  • @aWanderlustForLife

Yes, of course. The point I made was that they have accounted for men for outdoor and accessible toilets, but not women. They've even created underground urinals that pop up at night...something that took quite a bit of effort and money. Also, the tongue and cheek of this was that there's not a lot that I can hate, so I chose the things that actually bother me.

It is outrageous like how disgustingly rich is this country, to not be possible to make proper toilets around the city. Even for a guy is annoying that you literally sometimes you need to ask at the restaurants permission to just go and use it, because are not toilets. But is very clearly where those money go🤦‍♂
