Why I had to resubmit my thesis
So I've not been uploading for a while, and this is why. It's because I've been doing what nearly all PhD students do after their viva!

Just to clarify what I say in the video, the extra work required for major corrections means additional /academic/ work. So doing new analysis, bringing in new data, etc. Minor corrections also involves doing additional work, but that means work in how your core research is presented - major corrections represents adding to or modifying the research you are presenting. That can be a lot of work, or as was the case for me not very much extra work at all.

I guess unplugging is really the only way to go when you rely on the internet to pay your rent and stuff. The conundrum appears when you can't unplug frequently because you know... plugging in is technically your job. I don't envy your position (although I would also like to be in a position where my videos could fully support me), but yeah you might want to call every winter off and say, "Ciao, I'm disappearing like the sun above the arctic circle." Personally I wouldn't mind waiting for longer if that meant better videos, or videos that were released with a less stressful mindset. I'm subscribed to CGP Grey. Waiting for several months for a video isn't a new concept to me. That being said, I'm sure the numbers on KZread show you better than it shows me that infrequent - especially horribly infrequent - uploads don't really help you out in the game against The Algorithm. In any case, I love your work, take care :) -- an undergrad physics student who also wants to do youtube cuz why the fuck not

Hi Andrew
I‘ve watched all of your videos over the course of the past two years and they are so well made it‘s incredible. Also I think they contributed substantially to my decision to start a PhD 4 weeks ago. So glad to hear from you and keep up the awesome work you do :)
wow this feeling... being on the top of your work. feeling you know more than your supervisor on the specific subject! priceless! congrats! I will soon be done with my PhD and I CAN NOT WAIT!

I must say your videos are so helpful, insightful and interesting!! I’m hoping to study physics next year , and watching your videos about your experience with college has been so affirming. Thanks for doing what you do!!
Honestly man! I've been treading on a thin line during my two years of phd (in Geological modelling, s'pose you're familiar with the concept) and to be fair, I haven't watched a lot of your videos but I've never regretted any of those 10 minutish. Thanks man! I really aspire to reaching that "Apotheosis" feeling you described.
Congratulations Simon! Been an incredible journey shared by you. Thank you for doing so. Sure the holiday was well deserved. 😊
Your videos help so much🙏🏻 thanks for taking us through your PhD journey. I wish more people did that.
Congrats on finishing up! Looking forward to your future videos!
Loving the youtuber fairly lights. I thought there had been something missing from your channel

And the legitimacy plaque. Don't forget that.
Both new videos are SO GOOD! The mythical beasts one is probably one of your best videos to date. I've just started my degree in biology at Cambridge so am very far away from thinking about PhDs but I love watching your videos to give me a better idea of what it's actually like and whether it's something I'd like to do in the future :D
Yay! It's great to see you again, Simon :)
Notification squad member Great video!! Your hard work in both videos and studies is a great motivator for me Keep making such videos
Good job man. Well done Just completed mine too. It has been a great journey. Such a bittersweet when it's done.
You're back!!!! Legit so excited to see the notification!
Hah, so worths the wait! This is quite an amazing push for the new school year.
Congratulations to being one step closer to being completely free! I think major corrections have a bigger stigma for PhDs but as you explained it's not as "major" as it sounds. I spoke to Steve Cross recently who essentially echoed your sentiments stating that he got major corrections, it took a few days of extra analysing of data and that was that. Hope to see more content from you in the future!
hey you are so an inspiration for everybody who watch your videos I wish you the best and keep going
Thank you, Simon! I said it before, but your honesty and realistic breakdown of what a PhD entails has pushed me to go for my own. I've started my doctoral program last week at Waseda University in Japan. Hope you will vlog your graduation ceremony. I want to see you rocking that floppy hat!
I’ve been waiting for this video!!!
Simmmmonnn...Bro waited for u for a long time.....Nice to see u once again.....
Finally some vids ma man, good to see you back, even if its with partially bad news lol
Also, god damn, i definitely plan to go help and volunteer on some events and groups that I did as a kid. That would be such a trip down nostalgia lane, as well as a feel good moment, and overall, as you said, fulfilling, just helping out and connecting back to my "roots"
Simon you are the best!
Interesting, thanks. Here in Finland the process (as I have witnessed it from outside) is slightly different. PhD thesis is sent out for "precheck" to 2 senior researchers. They need to agree that the work is sufficient/suitable for PhD, otherwise the the process does not go forward. Precheckers do give comments and requests so that corresponds to what you describe as changes. But it is the final version that is published&submitted to a public and oral examination (like viva, I assume) and it is then very rare that the thesis would be rejected.
Welcome back c:
thank you. I'm at that stalled in the middle stage for...reasons...and even the idea of the thesis as stumbling from idea to result to trashed section to eventually a body of work...very helpful.
YEEEES! He’s back :D
Random question but, could you do a video on how to critique research or an article?
That description of searching for, downloading, and processing the data is so familiar. You basically described my entire Master's work - especially because the actual data types are probably nearly identical.
Although I've just submitted my MSc dissertation in the 3rd September but I can really relate to almost everything you say in the video!
Great video.
Hey Simon! You’re right! No one talks about the extra steps post-viva. I just submitted last Friday and this video made me feel a bit better about the (inevitable?) prospect of having major corrections 😂

Best of luck with the viva! It almost certainly won't be as bad as you fear :)
Man Dr. Clark you should upload that data speed part! It looks great haha
Finallyyyyyyy new video!!!!!
Hope the extra corrections weren't too bad! I was so glad when I had minor corrections to do. I don't think I could have gone back to do more work on it at the time. Was glad it was over!

Sometimes it is easier to manually download, however programming skill definitely helps even if there is a user interaction, security steps, cookies, etc. You can automate or simulate browsing.
Thank you for such an inspiring video and channel as a whole, if I ever need to motivate myself to do work I watch your videos (mainly vlogs). Out of interest, what happened to the livestreams where you went through past papers? I found them very useful and they have disappeared. But thank you for being one of the best channels out there (in my opinion)

They will be coming back! I stopped doing them when the exam season (in the UK) wound down, but now that people are back at school and uni I'll be doing more streams going through examples and questions from papers and textbooks. Should be back in the next week or so!

Simon Clark amazing! They have been good enough that I’ve started recommending them to some teachers to share around the school (not that this should effect how you run the streams). I especially like the music in the background and do that now for my own revision technique. Thank you again. Do you have any choral music recommendations for that kind of stuff?
I haven't done a phd but i handed in my minor thesis 2 days ago and feel so empowered having completed it. It feels like I could do anything now
"Depending on how you look at the world there's no difference - but there is." As a graduate student I feel this on a spiritual level 😂😅 Also, love the "legitimate" arrow to your play button
Glad to see you back at KZread Simon!
Congrats buddy,😤 So many questions, so much stress before starting my own journey... but here is my first question : fees, budget for a PhD student ! ? Did you ever thought of working besides doing your PhD? Keep up the wise work on youtube you're doing dear comrade 😉👊

I too used ECWMF data and I am an Environment student, sometimes I feel like the lines betwwen subjects are somewhat blurred these days.
Talking of your downloads is giving me flashbacks to my master's
Return to your thesis, log back in to your PC and you'll never now how far down back the rabbit hole you'll have to go....good luck Alice!
How did you know what area of physics you wanted to do your PhD in? Im a 3rd year chemistry undergrad and plan on doing a PhD, I have so many ideas on what topics I would like to do but cannot do them all!

Hi Simon, love your videos. Currently studying a masters in climate change myself! Just wanted to know your opinion on how important the grade you get at master’s level is for job applications? Or is it only if you want to do a PhD that the grade becomes really important?
What are your plans now?
Thanks!
I was wondering your opinion on sciences at Cambridge vs Oxford?
Thank you for inspiring me to Vlog.
Hey Simon! Now that you have done your PhD, what will you do for work?
I am happy for you!!!...👍🍀🖖📚🌟🎼☯️
I absolutely hates doing it and no longer excited or can’t even push myself to do it! :|
"Yeah! I'm a scientist now!" What I wouldn't give to be at that stage in my life right now.
Hey, what’s going on. Another great video 😊 Nice one though.

I wanna be your friend so I get dragged to cool stuff like visiting France or being a scout leader (and because of 100 other reasons) The way you live yor life rocks And that's so inspiring! ^^ I love your videos, something that apparently I feel the need to say from time to time
Okay, you do realise that, now, we wanna have a complete walkthrough of your PhD, right?
XD he has a legitimacy sign(literally a paper saying legitimate) under his 100k sub awardXD
"The first time I had proper break...since 3 years ago" I can hear my gut churning.
Which vlog is that at 1:55 where you passed and did your viva? Someone tell me!!!!!
Oh man, just had to make alterations before resubmission!
Nice video, Dr Clark?
Peer review is a lucky game hahah. My Thesis results in two articles, the first have a model much less validated than the second. But the first was accepted by the journal with few minors while the second receives heavily majors appointments T_T
Yep, a PhD is definitely a Frankenstein creation, I can subscribe to that xD Congratulations on your re-submission!
"KZreadr fairy lights." Love it.
Can I ask if your thesis was a monography or did you do cumulative? I've done cumulative and it seems far less stressful.
pHD (progress) (happiness) (delightful). yeah!
Just wanted to point out that some people manage to get no corrections at all on their thesis, so this step may not be common to everyone. At least to people in my uni got no corrections this year. Lucky them.
Stop spoiling us Dad!! Another video! Yess!
What laptop do you use?
I am working on minor revisions. They give me three months. I though I could finish in 15 days. But it has taken me a month!! I have not worked very hard. I spend only 3 to 4 hours on it. Hopefully I can send it to my internal examiner this week.
I thought the title meant you had to revise and re-submit (as in you had to do another viva), not that you had major corrections! I just submitted my soft-bound thesis 2 days ago and I'm dreading the viva...
@SimonClark

Didn't enjoy it exactly.. I got major corrections, rather than R&R, which is what I was expecting. Sorry, didn't mean that it wasn't stressful, I'm sure it was. I feel like these corrections will take forever!

Slightly sidetracked by the youtuber lights and the legitimacy lol! I have my thesis for my MSc starting this November, yikes!!

Congratulations Simon for finishing your thesis and thank you for teaching us about the process. I've recently started vlogging my experiences as an electrical engineering student at Glasgow University and I'd really appreciate it if you'd check them out. Cheers!
I used the word Frankenstein (as did my supervisor) in my viva for the analytical framework I developed in my thesis, lol, what a lovely coincidence! Congratulations Dr. Clark :-)
That was really interesting. I'm a second year student on my second pass through college, with vague dreams of ending up in academia. We'll see what happens.
