#Garmin #1040 #2024
Ok I know the Garmin 1050 has now been unveiled but before i bought it and even filmed this video I didnt know the Garmin 1050 was going to be released. However the software from the 1050 has been released to the 1040 on a Beta download and i have got it. I will test it for a couple of days and i will be doing a video on ti and giving you my thoughts

Never seen the little lake looking quite so stunning on a video, mate! What a morning to be out! I'm firmly in the stone age with my 6 year old Element Bolt and will probably run it right into the ground before getting something with a bit more functionality. Good video - staggering battery life! - and these vids are really useful for people looking to upgrade or review options for a first GPS unit.

It was a cracking morning to be out there mate. The mist on the lake and the fields was unreal. The camera didn’t do it justice. Wish I had my other camera with me to really capture it. If your head unit works then run with it mate. I like the features that help me on the really long rides and do enjoy the data it gives. I totally understand this isn’t for everyone and isn’t needed either to enjoy 2 wheels in the hills 😀

Hey Russ another great little video mate. Do you use a power meter either on the cranks or pedals or does the garmin figure out watts output?

I have a 1040 but to be honest I think the Wahoo Summit Climb feature is better. It also requires no route and has a super elevation screen that shows relief ahead and allows the summit pro data fields to set across screens. Not a deal breaker though. Make sure you check GP Lama’s video on using IQ data fields on various screens the Windy one is brilliant. I think the stats is problematic. Stamina often isn’t correct and overall I have become more interested in riding with feeling as a pure club level rider. I do like to know my power, cadence and HR but that’s about it really. HRV, train readiness, body battery gaslight the shit out of you and just add that level of doubt when you feel just OK and HRV is down. The other thing is that Garmin Watches are fairly rubbish at sleep tracking which they rely on for lots of the stamina and body battery etc calculations. I think the 1050 will only be worthwhile if you want a better screen and follow routes a lot. It does look much better. Like all new Garmin’s though, wait a year for the bugs to subside. The 1040 was a disaster zone for almost a year.

Great advice there mate. I’ve downloaded the new beta firmware and going to test it tomorrow morning. Looking at the videos apparently the new climb pro is super accurate and a lot more responsive to the sharp gradients. I’m really enjoying the watch but that’s coming from along time Apple Watch user. It feels pretty good and records my sleep well enough. The train readiness I agree it should be taken with a pinch of salt as it’s all algorithm based and I know if I’m ready to hit it hard but also I enjoy seeing the data as I’m quite analytical with it. Have a great weekend matey ❤️

Not much of one really but happy with the price 🫤 and compared to the 1050 it’s still cheap. I suspect though it will reduce soon. What was the deal you seen ?

@bonn1771 not sure what that is in English but I paid £450 all in. The new 1050 here is £650 atm I’m still happy with this and don’t thin the extra is worth it for the screen. I’m going to try answering the question in a coming video soon.

seems just about perfect, but 573 euros?! silly expensive. someone should put a large battery in a regular device. my 520 consumes 330 milliwatts average, yours should be under 200 milliwatts average. were either of these to have a proper 18 watthour battery like a smartphone does, which would only cost 40 grams extra, the battery lives would be ~55 hours and ~100 hours for each respective gps. i mean it's neat they try for long life with a puny little battery, but is it that hard to square the corners and put in a proper one?

I’ve had this same gripe with phones for years. Tbf my 1040 battery is incredible but looks like the 1050 has gone backwards not forwards. Guess there’s a price to pay for a great screen but like you say they could have gone a little thicker and increased the battery

@@CyclingwithRussi love the old transflective display, but there's a case to be made for mountain bikers possibly preferring transmissive when tree canopy comes and goes in quick succession. i think they're masking a supply issue by the way, as transflective displays are getting used less often everywhere. marketing will tell you it's an improvement whatever a change is, but i'd say a bike computer doesn't need vibrant colours or high resolution, just colours and some sharpness, both of which are adequate on 10 years old transflective displays. in the meantime colour e ink is slowly getting good by the way, they are more and more contrasty every year, but those are mostly large displays for ereaders. a colour e ink gps will beat everything. is 2-5 refresh per second is enough for a gps screen? i think it is

@@markifi as long as it shows the data that’s enough I think. For mtb my watch is enough as I don’t really need to see any data for my style of rididng
