Why I got the A7R V

Last week I picked up a Sony A7R V camera body here in Germany. This is to replace my A7IV and act as the primary stills body for the next 3-5 years. I hope. Here is why I decided to make the switch:
- LCD and EVF Improvements. LCD is 63% higher resolution & the EVF is 155% higher resolution!!
- Sensor 61mp High Res. Great for Architecture details and epic Landscapes.
- Internal Focus Stacking. Useful for wide angle dynamic landscapes.
- AI Auto Focus. Great for wildlife and people.
- Improved IBIS. Handheld
- Bionz-xr Processor. Faster and updated tech.
This site also gives an amazing comparison and hits a lot of the reasons I saw fit to make the change - cameradecision.com/compare/So...
I'm sure I'm missing things here but I did think when buying the A7IV it may be a temporary solution. I've wanted to invest in a primary stills body for awhile and since making the switch to Sony for video it made sense to slowly switch over for stills as well. Now that journey is complete. At least for the next few years.
Next up is Patagonia where I can really flex this camera and hopefully not have any more shitty audio issues!! Gotta get that DJI Wireless Mic setup :)
Hope you're well and catch you in the next video!

Looks like a great piece of kit and rounds off your equipment nicely. The images were really good, loved the architecture , especially the staircases and that really unusual lift , never seen one ! Liking all the urban architecture vlogs, really interesting , Hamburg has some amazing buildings and seems pretty free access which for photographers, is pretty rare these days !

I bought a A7R5 last week, I was a Nikon shooter for over 10 years. It's a very good camera Ive only shot in MRAW so far but Im really happy with the results. The 1080p (10bit 422) is actually very good for my needs (social media), I just shot with the default profile had it set to AWB and Auto ISO (it actually works on this camera) I just did a quick tweak to contrast in post - done finished - delivered. I like the rear screen, and I find the stabilisation helps a lot. I bought it with the Tamron 20 - 40 which Im also very happy with, my last 4 jobs I basically used the one lens.

I might get a a7r5 too some day. Since it has 10bit video it makes a good hybrid for me to combine with my a7iv. And the new features through the ai chip are looking interesting. Like the better auto White balance are awesome for Video. I hope it's getting so good that for shorter clips you don't have to worry about wb anymore. Hard to imagine with most current cameras but at one point we couldn't imagine to use autofocus for critical video Situations

Hello Greg. I've only just discovered a function for myself that nobody is talking about. But this is for me as a wilderness and touring photographer, who has to pay attention to the weight (since I have to carry everything myself): The digital, i.e. still lossless, zoom when filming is 1.5x with the other alpha cameras, including the A1. But at the A7RV it is 4x, at least when filming!!! With this function you can get more out of your lens and don't have to change it every time and save another lenses and weight. The function even works in super 35 mode! Grüße von Udo aus Porta Westfalica

One time the same Mic-Fail happend to me. After a video shoot the friend, who was with me, told me, that the Mic wasn't completely plugged in. So I had to film the complete Lost-Place-Location again. 🙄 BTW: That was very interesting and the picture at 7:08 is really awesome. You are a real magician... 😉

A7RV / A7RIV sensor is rated one of the best sensors ever made. It's amazing. The EVF is the best on the market and the screen, the AI. It's so damn good. I'm glad I made the switch from the A7IV as well.

Ahhh - so you gave in! I was wondering whether you might after you had some concerns from the Antarctica trip. Friday I dropped mine on rocks from about shoulder height. By some miracle, nothing precious is damaged, which speaks to its robustness. Tiny scratch on the body, that's all. Even the CPL filter just bounced off without so much as a scratch. I think the L-bracket must have taken the brunt of the fall. A couple of notes of concern, though: the hotshoe needs protection from any hint of moisture otherwise you get the "unrecognized accessory" message. And one day with Nick Page it started firing constantly and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I had to borrow a body for a couple of days until rubbing alcohol did its work (on the camera, not me). And the locking button for the top dial has become a tad sticky for me - not sure whether that was due to the fall.. And yes, the tilt screen is such a great addition. It makes low-angle shots so much easier. And there's the focus bracketing, improved IBIS, improved subject detection... pretty much every area was improved over the a7R4. Fingers crossed this will last me five years as well.

Must admit, I keep looking at the A7R V as the next update to the R5 and the release of the R1 from Canon seems to be stalling. Its one of the reasons I haven't invested in RF glass yet for my EOS R as I keep debating the merits of changing platforms. So thanks Greg.....I've got GAS again 😂. Hope you are knocking it out the park in Patagonia with the new Sony

LOVED the video, and the photography, and that beautiful building. I'm saving for an A7RV, and should be there in about another month. The thing I absolutely love about the A7RV is the fact that I can use 26mp (Medium) for the majority of my photography, but the 61mp is there when I need/want it for things like architecture, wildlife, and sports, and the internal focus-stacking (like I also have on my Fuji X-T3) is awesome. Great work! :-)

We had a paternoster lift in one of the buildings at Leeds Uni in around 1970. They can be a challenge to use but you do get used to it. No more waiting for the lift to come. Btw, when is your "stairs" book going to be published?😉

That elevator looks crazy! Are you supposed to step in and out of it while it's in motion? As always, I love your urban photography. The A7R V should be perfect for it. I hope future Canon models like the R5 Mark II incorporate that 4-axis LCD design. It's brilliant.
