Why I Flow Rolled With This Tough BJJ Blue Belt (Narrated Rolling Video)

Спорт

In today's video I share a roll with one of my Blue Belt training partners. He's normally a super tough roll. But for a couple of reasons which I talk about in the video we're rolling a lot slower.
I've talked about the idea of flow rolling plenty of times on the channel as a ways of getting some BJJ training either for a warm up, to play with new techniques or simply stay active when you're coming back from a injury of some sort.
While this narrated rolling video will not be the most exciting thing you've ever seen it will show you what a good paced flow roll looks like. Also, because the rolling is at a much slower pace you'll see both of us playing with different techniques and positions.
Hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching.

I can roll like this with my buddies for 30min a roll, no injuries, no pains. You don't get locked up, you get out of your comfort zone and you try new moves. On my home home i'm not even sweaty, nothing hurts, i learn way more, and it's a wierd feeling like after a really intense meditation session.

This is my favourite rolling style for learning, to be honest. Once I can pull off a move, or setup what I want a few times, then I think about increasing the intensity. Our gym is very supportive of this too, which is very important.

Something even more helpful than this is to go at this speed, but never let the guy have anything. You can use all the strength you want, you go for subs, you don't give up position, but you only move at 10% speed. No explosiveness, no speeding up to defend or get position. The problem with flow rolling, while it is good for thinking about transitions, it tends to lead to sloppy technique and unrealistic responses.

Great video, my question is if your not green, but not great, say a blue belt, is this kind of rolling more beneficial, as it allows more flow, and more technical advancing as oppose to position holding, per roll? I’ve been feeing like all my rolls are very rigid and hard lately, after watching this I’m thinking I should be doing more of this. Thanks, Osss.

Not really. Depends on the person and the situation. If you're trying to get yourself ready for competition or trying to really sharpen your game. You'll need to go at a higher pace. But it can be good for shifting gears and going slowly to play with things a bit more. As I said in the video. It's great for recovery, coming back from injuries, etc.

I was wondering if you had any advice escaping the the forearm from those positions?

Christopher Velez it’s not really something you can teach in a video. I try to match the intensity of whoever I’m rolling with. A lot of the time older and more experienced guys flow roll by default and that’s how I got comfortable doing it.

Chewjitsu yes well my problem is when I ask newer people to flow they flop. No one properly moves through the position. They give up the position and there are no proper mechanics being used. On the other hand there are people who don’t give up the position enough. Like they are not so much exchanging positions but rather fighting to always win. Just a short something would be nice. Thanks for the response and I love the videos

I noticed a guy and a gal rolling in the background. Im interested to know, is it considered rude to avoid or refuse to roll with ladies. Our club being a very small group, only about 8 guys and no gals yet. Im not against members of the opposite sex rolling , im just not comfortable with myself doing it. I just cant see myself manhandling (lack of a better expression) a woman, chokes and locks, i just cant get past it. I guess im just old fashioned, i know its a sport in addition to a self defense program. Is this a common feeling.

ApistoRod we have a few girls in our gym and it’s absolutely fine. It actually makes them more comfortable if you’re not overly cautious because otherwise it gets a bit awkward. One of the girls, who started training the same time I did, is a lot better than me anyway. The key is to find a balance between being aggressive and slightly playful. Don’t be patronisingly easy on girls. If you treat them like you do men, with just an awareness about the boob area then it’ll all be good

Don't over think it. Girls want to train for sport and self defense. Depending on skill level and size differential, adjust your strength and pressure to find a good balance where you are both working during the roll. If you have similar skill, consider working on the technical aspects of your B game. You will get more out of it and your female partner will appreciate the fact that the entire roll didn't consist of surviving kimura attacks from side control.
