Why I don't use a smartphone

Not having a smartphone is a personal choice and the right one for me. Tracking apps, always being available and general disruption of the subconscious mind are main reasons why I chose to get rid of my smartphone.

@Frank Watkins I don't know how people have time to stay on a phone. By the time I garden, cook, care for the house and help my husband of over 80 years old, and we have been married almost 60 years.even though I am slow, have no time to chat all day on a phone. We both read, study, talk to one another, and rest. He says if everyone minded their own business and kept their own affairs in order, we wouldn't have the mess the world is in. I think smartphones aren't very smart.

I came of age, with respect to the internet, smart phones hadn't come into their place as yet. I always wondered why do I need a computer. That question was only going to be answered if I learned about computers and what I could do with one and any restrictions I would have by not having one. Most people I know who have nothing to do with computers or technology always say the same thing That i did in the origin of my experience, that is they do not need to have anything to do with the technology. That is fine as it is their right but I question the logic of their view when their stand on technology is based upon no knowledge of the subject. That makes me believe that their decision is based upon, well.....simply put, ignorance. Fearing the unknown is what i overcome as a young child! The more ya know the more ya go! My usage of technology expanded exponentially as I began to grasp its capabilities. This usage was taken into multiple areas of my daily life from casual to work I found that getting information quickly made my job so much easier. As technology increased with what information is available I found that I become a lot more informed about nearly everything. It is so easy to acquire information that used to take me to the encyclopedia and subsequent yearbooks to derive what I was interested in. The old school is still viable but way to slow for the timeframe I choose to get my knowledge. The flip side of my acquired knowledge base is that being ignorant has is advantages. The old saying that ignorance is bliss comes true so much more nowadays than I would have ever expected. Like the biblical story of the fruit from the tree of life! With knowledge comes an equal amount of responsibility!

@@magicone9327 thank you for your reply. It is not that I am averse to technology. I do have a computer, as I am writing this to you on one. My stand on it is that without an understanding that both good and bad apply to all walks of life, too many today fail to have the wisdom, or use restraint when applying the technology . Yes, the more you know, the more you go as you said, but my contention is that we as a people have gone too far in the wrong direction. My viewpoint is not based on ignorance, nor fear of the unknown.. It is based on the fact that I have a large family, and often watch the results of their not using their time, talents and abilities on more positive pursuits and productivity of their minds.

How many times have I seen people walking in crosswalks against a red light because their heads are glued into their phones? I depise phones in general.... get sick and tired as heck that folks always expect instant answers and connectivity when I am more than happy if you leave me alone, and leave a message somewhere else, like a landline. I saw so many many folks getting lost in their damn phones, and not connecting verbally at family gatherings, but they text each other when they are sitting right next to each other, so nobody can hear, but blocked themselves out from all useful human activity. And folks don't get it when I turn the damn thing off for a week or so........ I don't need to, and they shouldn't need to..... ya know? thank you Bjorn.... you hit the nail on the head. I hate it. and am still yet stuck to it for other folks sake, and to make sure that my jobs are taken care of... but after dead mom's estate is dealt with.... It stays off until emergency only. I will not allow my kids to have a cell phone until they can pay for it themselves, they don't need it. What on earth did folks do to survive in up until the mid 90's and early 2000's. They don't damn need it, they only use for games and social media crap.... but ain't teaching them anything at all useful, ya know?

I am at the time of typing this 29 years old and have never owned a cell phone. Someone gave me an old go phone which I used once and gave back to them. One of the reasons Bjorn feels better with out the phone is that he is more free from others and society because he doesnt have to worry about lots of texts, apps, etc. Another is because the phone is a frequency emitter and I believe we are very sensitive to those frequencies. I think thats why people are always aware of their phones. Its not just a physical device, its like it has its own presence or intelligence. They are called "smart" phones.

Great theme Bjorn! I do own a smartphone BUT I use it mainly for replacing the things that I use to take in my purse: - normal phone -Journal (now write in "Notes") -Calendar -Agenda (now write in calendar) -voice recorder (I used to take a small one now I record in the phone's voice recorder) -maps, that was the worst, it was heavy in my purse, I used to carry everyday this little book of maps of my city (european capital) - camera: I didn't used to take a camera with me, now I'm happy that whenever I want a picture, I can take it with my phone. -compass But I don't use social media, well, I discover KZread and watch things that interest me. I don't have WhatsApp on purpose and my friends are always complaining that I am disconnected and bla bla...so Im very happy to read all of your comments, I don't feel so weird 😊.

I totally agree with you on your rejection of the smart phone, I myself have a "dumb" phone and I use it like it's a hard line, I keep it at home unless I know I'm going to need it when I'm out. It's interesting how quickly people get sucked into smart phone usage and then figure the whole world needs to have one as well. When I tell people I don't text I get a look that says "what is wrong with you?". Who needs to carry an "electronic leash"? Not I. If you told people that they had to have a tracking chip surgically implanted in them they would rightfully be up in arms about the subversion of their rights but then get a "smart phone" and carry it with them constantly. Very curious how the smart phone "fad" has caused people to voluntarily give up their rights to privacy.

And, although they have smart phones now I notice a distinct difference between the amount of time they spend on their respective phones and the time spent by others of their age. One of my children writes novels but uses a fountain pen and an 80 year old typewriter. Imagine someone in the future saying they still use an 80 year old laptop or iPad. No? Neither can I.
